I was here for the first time last night and ordered something very simple that I have ordered at other Sushi restaurants and have had no issues with those places. I ordered three sushi rolls wrapped in seaweed and no rice due to health issues. One sushi roll should have 6 pieces. I was served three 4 piece rolls which looked like they were chewed up. When I complained, I was told without the rice and only seaweed, the sushi roll was difficult to cut and that each piece was larger than normal which was bullshit. The pieces were small. The server and management didn't do anything to fix it. I will never spend money there again. And I have already told several friends about my experience. One star is too generous. Update: in response to the owner, you apparently don't know how to take constructive criticism. You are defensive, rude and downright nasty. Owning a business means listening to your customers whether your reviews are good or bad. read more

I am currently terrified of my kitchen because there was a mouse (note: I am talking about my home kitchen NOT the restaurant's), so I had to have about 500 panic attacks and not cook at all ever again. That leads me to last night, I decided I would pick up sushi on my way home. The plan being to get the sushi, enter in apartment, run to bedroom, eat there, throw away trash. Plan: success. Sushi rolls: Just not tasty. I had eaten at Isohama once before about a year ago. I remember thinking it was okay, but I was upset that they didn't have a peanut avocado roll option, which is my favorite. Okay, that's fine. Last night I ordered a sweet potato roll, a sticky soybean roll, and a inari avocado roll. I have never had a sticky soybean roll before, but I figured I would like it since I eat soy everything. I hated it. could not even finish it. I can't really blame them, though, maybe that is what it is supposed to taste like. What I can blame them for though, is the sweet potato roll. It was also disgusting. The sweet potato itself was not very orange, but that's fine, but it really just had absolutely no flavor. The inari avocado roll was amazing and is the sole reason why I am giving 3 stars instead of 1. read more

Great neighborhood restaurant! Really nice reasonable menu choices including the drink menu which is chock full of fun cocktails. Great apps, early bird and lunch specials and desserts. Attentive servers and very good sushi. Just a really pleasant place. Definitely recommend! read more

For the people who post amazing ratings, clearly aren't avid nor experienced sushi consumers. Having lived in LA vegas and Vancouver I have spent the past 10 years eating sushi and having tons of Japanese u friends teach me about it. having said that here's what I thought of this joint. SERVICE- 1/5, they were QUICKLY to seat us n take our order, however we ordered few courses and the dishes piled up, WE had to push teh dishes aside ourselves no one came to get them, nor did anyone come ask us if we need napkins, more drinks etc. ESTABLISHMENT- 4/5 it was very nice inside, the interior design was trendy, clean, modern, a lot of people and nice atmosphere. FOOD- HORRIBLE! i ordered edemame (good), gyoza- very tasty but had 5 tiny pieces for 5$, and one roll of philly roll which literally consisted of PLAIN cream cheese, salmon and rice, it was extremely tasteless, 6 tiny pieces, however was cheap. Spicy Dragon roll, which was a bigger version of the philly roll no cream cheese, and was literally salmon, rice, and 2 pieces of avocado, it was terrible. we spent 35$ for 2 people and walked out hungry and very disappointed. My boyfriend was mad for me suggesting to try this place. PRICE- reasonable. (considering the tiny little tasteless portions meeh) overall NEVER going there again. read more

Went for an early dinner (5:30 on a weekday night) with a friend who lives in the neighborhood but hadn't been to Isohama before. Unfortunately their outdoor dining shed wasn't open, but we were seated right away indoors. We each ordered tonkatsu and chicken katsu and sake. The katsu was done well, crispy on the outside and juicy inside. Service was prompt, although our server was a little too eager to remove our plates before we were done eating. Good value for the price. My friend expects to order takeout from Ishohama in the future. read more

I love this place! My friends and I have been traveling from Astoria to eat here since 2013. A staple of the Upper East Side, this is the best place to get Japanese food in the area. I especially love the Crazy Dragon Roll, which has been A1 since day 1! The big homie, Edmund at the front desk, is one of the coolest hosts I know and will always make sure you are attended to. It is a pleasure to dine here. Moderate sized, comfortable, intimate without being squished together. The food is very good and we appreciated the attentive and thoughtful service. Been here several times before, not by choice, but a relative of mine lives near by and she seems to love this place. Don't really have much of an opinion about their food; it's just ok. Visited this place on a hot, humid weekday after a hectic work day, around 7:30 ish with my uncle, and it was surprisingly busy in there, plus a lot of delivery orders being taken out I imagine. Anyway, we get seated and obviously I'm not a Japanese food connoisseur so naturally I have some questions before placing my order. By the way, they seemed to be severely understaffed on a busy day with deliveries being shuffled out of kitchen and attending to the patrons. Anyway, the older lady comes to take our order and seemed very fussed about the fact that I had questions; I imagine because it was very busy in there, but still, I'm seated and I have some questions before I place an order. Still, she tried to answer my questions but I couldn't understand her (coz of her accent, which is fine) but I kept asking to clarify and she goes "I said 3 times. Are you ready to order or no? You need more time?" Are you kidding me? I don't care if you make the world's best sushi, with service like that anything would taste like sh*t. Make the patrons feel welcome and comfortable, and don't rush them. If you've been in business for this long you should know better to ensure you're staffed to handle requests during peak hours - oh, and the food took like 40 minutes to arrive (we're sitting there with AC on full blast). Actually 4.5 stars, but that rounds up! The sushi here was incredible. It was definitely fresh and felt like it just melted in your mouth. I highly recommend the snow crab and tuna roll! The cocktail was also surprisingly delicious to the point of being dangerous. I ordered a "sweet peach" and it was addictive. If you're not careful, you could definitely drink a few too many of these. The only tiny problem I had was that the spring roll appetizer was 4 mini rolls for $7.50 + tax. Not really worth it. It was tasty, but doesn't justify the price. All in all, I will be coming back in the near future. read more

My family and I come here probably 2-3 times a month depending on the month (and they might go even more without me when I am not in town!) and I can say without any reservations that this is my favorite sushi restaurant on the Upper East Side. It's not the flashiest place but the prices are reasonable and the food is consistently good every time we order. I've never ordered takeout from Isohama so I can't speak to that experience but just do yourself a favor and come into the restaurant to enjoy the nice ambiance and quality service. Favorites of mine include the Chirashi, Sushi Sandwich, and Miso Soup. Can't wait to come back! read more

It's fine, nothing great. I've ordered from here a few times, never had an amazing experience it's usually just fine. The eel is good. Tonight i got a tuna avocado roll and the tuna is very salty, fatty, and pale in color. I prefer big thick chunks of deep red tuna. I probably won't be getting tuna from here again. If I can eat sushi everyday until death, I probably would. My parents came to visit me for dinner and are avid sushi eaters, so ordering from here for the first time was a bit nerve racking. But the result was a pleasant surprise. If you take any regular Japanese restaurant item and order it here, you will not be disappointed, and maybe even enjoy it better here than most places. Their ingredients are fresh and all the sushi rolls we ordered (we ordered a ton for 5 people) tasted superb. Looks like I have found my go to Japanese restaurant! My friends and I were looking for a place to go post museum during the heat wave. Our criteria was a cool, relaxing environment, good drinks and reasonable food. IsOhama fit the bill and did not disappoint! First off, they have much better cocktails and decor than most Japanese restaurants. The white minimal space is beautiful, has high ceilings and nice seating arrangements. Our cocktails were so delicious, we each had two, between the mango, ginger and pomegranate martinis, the mango was the favorite. Our four course meal was a great value. The beef negimaki was a standout and my friend was thrilled to see sukiyaki on the menu. We didn't have sushi so can't comment on that. Service was top notch. We got there early and by the time we left, most tables were taken. I'm not in the area often, but may have to make a special trip for the cocktails and to try more of the menu. read more

Went here for dinner w/ a cousin of mine... She's a 26 yr old surgeon three years into residency... living on the Upper East Side...put it together, that means i'm rollin hard... You like that... good...that's probably the best part of this review.... So anyway.. I'd say the Sushi is above average and I think this restaurant is highly underrated. For appetizer, I had the firecracker shrimp which was VERY good, I'd highly recommend this. For dinner I had some kind of sushi/sashimi thing that came w/ 5 pcs of sushi, 15 pcs of sashimi (Salmon, Toro, Whitefish, Spanish Mackeral and I can't remember the last one, probably yellowtail) and ca roll thrown in for kicks. Fish was very clean, had quality cuts, about a centimeter thick and firm. A great filling portion of fish, easy to eat and appreciate in a slice. Nothing too fishy about it and I normally hate sashimi. My cuz had a couple rolls of spicy tuna and some eel roll. For around $50 bucks give or take we were stuffed and that is rare from a sushi place especially one on the UES. I will definitely be hitting this place if I'm in the mood for sushi while I'm uptown. *As a side note...I did schmooze the sushi chef when i first walked in to hook it up w/ some nice pieces of the fish. read more

So I went for their early dinner special which is from 5-7p and you pay 14.50, you get a soup, salad, entree and an ice cream dessert; which btw the Red Bean Ice cream was the best. I ordered the Crunchy Maki Combiantion Sushi and it was pretty good and it was a lot more sushi than I expected. My fiance ordered the Yaki Udon which was delicious All of their portions are very reasonably sized. You definitely get what you pay for. How they ave improved over the years. With a renovation a few years ago and new ownership Isohama has surely improved. The sushi is good, not great. The service is respectable and the atmosphere is very nice. Their prices are on par with t he area and they have a great dinner special from 5-7 every night of the week. A-Ok is probably what describes this restaurant at best. My daughter used to live in the neighborhood, and has fond memories of this place, so naturally if we ever are in the upper east side of NYC, there is a request to visit this restaurant. The only thing she orders is shumai. I on the other hand have ended up trying a few of their menu items. There is nothing special about their food. The greeters are pleasant, the service is courteous, the place is neat, but the food is "A-ok". Can't say anything negative, but nothing comes out as out of the ordinary, taste wise or presentation wise. Prices are reasonable for that area, and parking can be challenging too. read more

Came here for dinner with my best friend. We are always on the hunt for some good sushi, so we decided to give this place a shot. Started off with the Miso soup-good amount of seaweed and tofu, good broth, can't complain. Next we had the soft shell crap appetizer-seasoned well, but felt like it was done too fast, just enough for us both to have 2 pieces.
