Extremely rude. This is the third time the woman that takes orders is rude. She is rude to me in person and rude on the phone as well. However I've seen her treat others kindly. Today I ordered a little more than the usual for delivery. I called back quickly and decided to just change it to two orders of what I normally get. The woman hung the phone up on me. After I was trying to tell her no need to make a price adjustment just keep the extra money. NOOOWW... they can keep the food and refund my money as I no longer want to eat from an establishment that is rude and will hang up. I've given this lady too many chances and quite frankly I don't trust them preparing my food if this is their attitude. Her response is ... she's busy over on her end. I replied "that's fine, but communicate that with me don't just hang up. Now I don't want anything". The sushi isn't that great to have to deal with such an attitude. Isohama is like a block away from my apartment and I've been searching for good, reasonably priced sushi near me so I was really, really hoping that I would love it and my search would be over. I ordered a pick-up order over the phone and the process went really smoothly. I ordered the 2 roll lunch special (with two California rolls) which also comes with soup and salad. All together my total came to $9.80 after tax. I was quoted 10-15 minutes for pick-up and arrived after about 10 and just had to wait a few minutes. The hostess was extremely polite and when I was given my bag I made a mental note of how nicely everything was packaged up. They also included an ample number of soy sauce packets and napkins and a pair of chopsticks, although I would have liked a spoon included too for the soup (I ate at home so it wasn't a big deal, but if I had been somewhere else I don't know what I would have done). Up until when I took out the food and began eating, Isohama was a solid 5 star experience and I had no complaints. I ate the salad first, which was fresh but I didn't love the ginger dressing (it was fine, I've just had a lot better). The miso soup was totally standard. It was the sushi that I really had a problem with. While it was fresh, it was WAY too heavy on the avocado. Furthermore, EVERY California roll that I've ever had before has had cucumber in it - along with crab and avocado, it is one of just three ingredients that makes a California roll a California roll. Instead, this roll had masago instead of cucumber! I like masago, don't get me wrong, but I expect for it to be sprinkled on top of the roll instead of a whole clump packed inside. The sushi was fresh, but I just couldn't enjoy it because of how much masago was in there in lieu of cucumber. While I didn't eat there, I did think the inside of the restaurant was beautiful and spacious. I would consider coming back, but would ask for my Cali roll to be made the right way. Update: Changing my review to two stars, because I was contacted by the owner in a private message saying "Yes, please come show us how to make a proper California roll". He also commented below. While I'm sure a restaurant can make variations on a California roll, there IS a standard way to make one, and Isohama did not make it that way. Instead of being gracious and polite, the owner was rude and indignant. And unlike his claim, the menu (of which I posted a picture) does NOT list the ingredients for their unusual California roll. read more

We ordered delivery from Isohama for the first time last night which pleasantly arrived 16 minutes earlier than estimated. We typically only just get sushi and an appetizer when we want sushi but we cautiously stepped out of the box and ordered the Yaki Chuka Soba (chicken and vegetable soba noodles). This entre was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The chicken was tender, vegetables and sauce were all just delightfully delicious. The assortment of sushi we ordered was fresh and the cuts of fish were deluxe. I've lived in this neighborhood for 6 years and was loosing hope that I would find a sushi restaurant that just blew me away in its price point. It's not cheap but it's not expensive either. The service is so friendly! We ordered and kept ordering and our waitress never gave us an attitude. She was very veryyy friendly. Also poured my sake for me! The ambiance is great! It's dimly lit which is absolutely perfect for a date or a night out with your girls to chat over sushi. It's pretty quiet here but there are a good amount of customers even after dinner hours. There is much privacy, as there are walls and curtains that sort of block off a few tables. The food here is a bit pricey, where a California roll costs 5 dollars, and a Kani salad 5.5, which you can probably find for fifty percent off that price in Brooklyn or Chinatown. But, you're in the upper east side and these are the prices. However, take a look at their lunch menu which is pretty cheap and includes a lot. Also if you come during dinner hours (5-7pm) they have a menu for you as well, packed with a lot of stuff for only 14.50. Im not sure if it's included on the menu at yelp, but they have a lot of selections for these special meals. The sushi itself didn't seem like it was greatly made, but it was yummy. The Kani salad and miso soup, much like any other. But my waitress did pour my sake, and my friends too when I asked for another cup. Very friendly and polite staff. After a night of Dirty Pickle Martini's at The Penrose - my friend suggest sushi for dinner and we ended up at Isohama. I was surprised at how quiet it was on a Friday evening at 10 PM but hey, that doesn't hurt my feelings. I was hungry and looking to eat, not wait! We were seated immediately by a very kind soft spoke woman. The restaurant itself was very dimply lit which is pretty standard. Drinks: I got a Ginger Martini - meh! I truly don't remember it being much of anything and I wanted it to be spicy! Dinner: We each got one and a half of the Spicy Maki Combo ($17 each) and they came with a side of either Miso Soup or House Salad. I got the Miso Soup and the broth was pretty good and flavorful but there was very little to the soup - a few leaves of greens and small bits of tofu. The House Salad came with a Ginger dressing of sorts and this was very good. The sushi itself tasted fresh and as per usual came with wasabi and pickled ginger. There was salmon, tuna and pieces of a California roll (4-5 each type). I found this to be better than average sushi and really enjoyed this spot. Overall, the vibe is pretty low-key (at least when we were there) and I enjoyed this. Sometimes here in the city the "it" places are only sort of fun to go to because of the wait, loudness, and vibe (pretentious) and this place wasn't like that. My wife and I have lived in the neighborhood for over 6 years now and Isohama has been our go to spot for sushi. The food is always fresh and tasty. If you are looking for a special dish that isn't your traditional sushi fare, I recommend the Seafood Ginshi-Yaki, which is absolutely delicious. The best part of the experience is the staff, especially the waitresses who are always friendly. We have been taking my son here since he was born 3 years ago and the they are always so warm and accommodating with him. They give him a lollipop after every meal without fail. And they will even stop and greet us when we are just out and about walking around the neighborhood at night. All in all Ishoma is a fantastic place. Can't recommend highly enough. read more

Isohama was recommended by a good friend, and so I finally went to the UES to check this place out. Man am I glad I did. We ordered the $50/person Omakase. The choices were either $40/50/80/person and I wanted to see what "middle of the road" got us. There were two "appetizers" although for appetizers the portions were large. The first appetizer was a salmon tartare over avocado, with dorito chips to scoop it up. Like something you'd see at a super bowl party but the salmon made it fancy. :) Also in the first appetizer was salmon wrapped around mixed greens. The second appetizer was tuna sashimi mixed in with a very spicy sauce, jalapeno peppers, greens, and fruit. A nice array of flavors and the tuna was a-MAY-zing. The main course was a selection of sashimi, nigiri, and a house special roll. It is a lot of food, and those of you that know me know that when I say I was full, you may or may not be able to finish. It's very quiet place and always easy to get a seat during lunch. What struck me as odd for a Japanese restaurant is the decor and their choice of music which usually consists of jazz and French music. I have ordered only very simple food (shumai and pieces of sushi) so my recommendation is fairly limited, but the food I've ordered was pretty good. Avocado roll and gyoza were good, but it's hard to mess up avocado wrapped in rice and a deep fried wonton with mystery meat. Thus, two stars instead of one. Wow, just wow. A friend who lives a few blocks away took me here for lunch while I was visiting NYC. This is his go-to lunch spot and after my meal there I could see why! They have great lunch special at very affordable prices, in the $9-11 range. These specials give you soup, salad, and rice with your choice of the main item that ranges from beef, chicken, sushi, and tofu. I opted for the tofu teriyaki version and I was blown away. The tofu was perfectly prepared and paired really well with the teriyaki sauce. The rice was light and fluffy and the soup was just what I needed on a cold day. My dining companion ordered the sushi lunch special and he said the sushi was as good as he had at the sushi market in Tokyo, Japan! That's saying something, folks. I want to return to NYC just to go back to this restaurant, which looks unassuming from the outside but packs in lots of flavor and value! read more
