The man was in the mood for a fish sandwich and Ivars was where we landed. And I have to say, it ended up being a great choice. This location has plenty of seating and a big counter to order at. We went with two fish sandwiches and a chicken sandwich. All orders came with fries. The fish sandwich with fries was $8 and some change. A fantastic deal of you ask me. Our food came out piping out! I mean HOT! The fish fillet on our sandwich was big and more than I expected. It was crunchy on the outside and flaky on the inside. I also ordered chowder and it was okay. Little on the watery side. I'd come back here definitely for that fish sandwich but wouldn't order the chowder again. They have a self service bar with a variety of tartar sauce, malt vinegar and ketchup. Service was prompt. Food came out hot! The place definitely has an old school vibe. We tried the cajun cod, panko halibut, and the coconut prawns. All were delicious and had a light batter, rather than that thick breading you get other places. The fries were crispy tasted much better than they looked. Nothing was overly greasy either. A Seattle (Puget Sound) institution, this instance of Ivar's Seafood Bar in Bellevue is a good place to get inexpensive fried seafood in a fast casual environment. Ivar's is famous in the Seattle area, serving up their famous clam chowder and fish'n'chips from a variety of locations. It was founded at Pier 54 Seattle (now a popular tourist attraction) in 1946 as Ivar's Acres of Clams and there continues to be two additional full service restaurants. Where most people know Ivar's is through their clam chowder (sold and/or served in many, many places throughout Puget Sound area including the Delta SkyClub lounge at SeaTac which I frequently frequent) and their Seafood Bar, whose 18 locations serve up various seafood items, sourced from both East and West Coasts. I visited Ivar's during our first reconnaissance visit to Seattle 3 winters ago (and remember really liking it), so wanted to try their seafood again on this current visit in '24. So on a chilly night near the last days of '24, took a walk for carry-out. It's a fast food set-up, with one line: you look up to figure out what you like, place your order and pay. You can then wait around the register (if carry-out) or be seated if dining-in (where the food will be delivered to you once ready). Got the famous fish'n'chips (5 pieces $15.99) and oysters 'n chips ($12.79). The food was served in disposable paper food trays, one upside down to keep everything together, and both dishes fit in a small paper bag. Both were still hot when we got home. One really important thing about Ivar's is that they still use cod in their fish'n'chips, which is the perfect fish for English style. These were served 'finger' style, and were mostly fish with a very thin layer of bedding. All prereqs for a very good dish as I remembered....unfortunately this batch of cod wasn't great...the fish was extremely dense, to the point of it being dry. Maybe it wasn't the loin, but a different part of the fish? It was saved a bit with the tartar sauce, but once I finished, the best description I could think of was that it was food services grade...something you would expect at any cafeteria or outlet that sources their fish from an efficient food distributor. It came with batter dipped shoestring fries, which are my least favorite...you taste so much of the batter instead of the potato. But it did come with a good cocktail sauce: eating fries dipped in cocktail sauce reminds me of my younger days when Long John Silver was what I considered to be a good seafood restaurant. I did enjoy my fried oysters, much of it retaining the real brininess of the sea that I really like. But oysters tend to really soak up the frying oil (as it doesn't keep its shape well and the batter/breading will slide off)...hard to eat enough to satisfy a meal without being overloaded with grease. Yes, I think the food would have been a bit better if I ate it on-site, but not enough to make it equal to what I had before. I just don't think the sourced quality is as good, and with something as simple as fish'n'chips, you can't really fix that with a better cooking method. But the prices here are good for seafood, the fried oysters are worth eating if you like them, and the clam chowder (though not eaten on this visit) is consistent and filling (and delicious). read more

We also tried the Bulgarian cream churros. It was packed on Friday night, about 80% full. This is my third time at this location, and I've never seen it being this full before. We paid $20.61 (after tips) for the meal, and they currently have a buy $25 dollar gift card and get $5 gift card free promotion going on. I think it's a good time to use the promotion and try it out for anyone who's interested. I do think the fried fish was on the smaller side today, and it's a bit dry. The fries were fine, as a safe dish should be. Churro was a bit too sweet for me, and you could barely taste the cream. It's still a good deal, but I doubt I will stop by often unless there is another deal going on or if I want chowder. read more

Right after my food was brought out, a guy came in who smelled so strongly of rotting feces that I and another customer had to leave. I wouldn't blame the restaurant for something like that normally, but according to the employees, he's a regular and the smell complaints about him come in often. It seemed like they didn't plan on doing anything about it. I can't overstate how bad the smell was. After leaving, I tried going to another restaurant but wasn't allowed in because I had picked up enough of his lingering scent that I also smelled disgusting. In the end, I had to go home and send my clothes through the wash rather than eat out. If any of that sounds unpleasant to you, avoid this place. There are good places in the area that wouldn't put up with this. read more

The timing aligned and I managed to get some clam chowder into me. I drove past this outlet on my way to get cupcakes in the morning. It was not opened then but it was close to opening time (11 am). So I decided to detour back after getting the cupcakes and it was open by then. I was not hungry as I had breakfast so I just ordered a small cup of chowder. The staff was lovely. She gave me time to look over the menu board and made recommendations. I would get the bread bowl chowder next time when I was not full. She offered water when I said I just wanted the small cup of chowder. While it looked like a fast food set up as you ordered at the counter. They actually served you by bringing the tray of food over to your table. That was unexpected. This place has been there for 20+ years and you can see a regular stream people coming in, mostly ordering take out. Good to know this Ivar's is so close to my favorite cupcake place. read more

The food itself is okay quality for fast food. The decor has remained relatively unchanged over the years, but everything is clean and service is quick and friendly. I had no idea this was a Seattle chain, but my friend who's a local to the area recommended it! This location is a sit down but their other locations are of all different varieties. Being my first time, I got the fish and chips which was quite a sizeable portion for the price. They also have tartar sauce, ketchup, and a couple of others at your disposal. The cashier even came out and brought our food to us which I thought was a nice touch and very unexpected. The fish itself was nicely good and the fries were also perfectly crispy. Upon reading the reviews, I made sure that we parked in a space that was clearly marked for parking at Ivar's. We got in on a Sunday before the dinner crowd and ate indoors and ordered the grilled halibut and the grilled salmon with coleslaw and cornbread and hubby also had a bowl of red clam chowder! I was really disappointed considering it's supposed to famous for the Seattle - Sound area, and I've often heard - 'Oh you have to go to Ivar's' since moving to WA a decade ago. It did not live up to the hype. I had better in the desert! I got a 3 pc Cod. Which is really one piece of fish broken into 3 pieces. And it was not great. It seemed slightly over-cooked. The fries were limpish. The oil the fries was cooked in was definitely old - It is also cooked in a Canola (I think). I would not go there again. Definitely not the same ambiance from the one at the Lake :S but at least we can have a bite of their delicious food. Mum wanted some chowder while we were doing errands so we decide to visit this super convenient location. It is small with an easy spot in their small parking lot. I have to say that the chowder wasn't as tasty as other locations. And tables were not that clean. Lots of parking but also walkable. I've ordered twice now - once in-store as takeout and once as a mobile pickup. The order has been right both times with a very short wait on the in-store order, and the food was great! I've never been to Ivar's before as someone who recently moved to the area, and really enjoyed both the fish & chips and the sandwich. A common household name for a quick seafood bite, but a bit underwhelming for my first visit. The fish and chips prices seem reasonable, but they were tiny. I wasn't impressed with the soft and thin basic batter, while the fries were just what you would expect. For the cost of the fried scallops, the amount and sizes of them was lacking as well. The (white) clam chowder was passable and I'm glad it wasn't salty, but the consistency was a a bit watery. Parking is abundant. The inside of the place was clean. Ivar's never disappoints! I came here for lunch and the place was pretty steady on a Sunday. I didn't wait long in line to order and my food came shortly after, as one of the employees delivered it to my table. I ordered the Fish & Chips, with the salmon over the standard cod and a cup of the Salmon Chowder, which I think is better than the Clam Chowder! If you haven't tried it yet, I recommend getting the Salmon Chowder the next time you're at Ivar's! The Salmon Chowder has that smoky salmon flavor with a hint of spice, which is yummy! I also like that the chowder has a thick texture, making it heartier with plenty of pieces of salmon in it. The Salmon & Chips come with four pieces of salmon. (As you can tell - I love salmon!) There's not much to the entree, but it's solid, with the salmon perfectly fried with plenty of fries on the side. What's also nice about this Ivar's is that you can help yourself to as much of the condiments as you'd like, including tartar sauce. Sometimes at other seafood eateries you have to ask for more tartar sauce, and they may even charge you for extra sauces. But here you can help yourself to as much tartar, cocktail sauce, etc... as you'd like. They even have one of those Coca-Cola machines with a touch screen where you can customize your beverage, as there are plenty of choices for pop, juices and teas in this machine, including low-calorie and sugar-free options!
