We arrived at SeaTac and we were starving! On our way to Federal Way I searched for the closest Ivar's to our hotel. This place popped up. It was about a half hour before closing time. Of course I had to have a clam chowder. I also ordered a five piece of their World's Famous Fish & Chips. The lady who took our order gave us an extra piece I think because she heard we haven't had Ivar's in a while because we're from out of state. Man o' man! The fish tasted so fresh and the chowder was creamy and flavorful! Even the fries tasted good. I really like their malt vinegar too. I wish we had Ivar's in Arizona! Was really looking forward to trying this place out since I moved here 2 years ago. Was curious to see what all the hype was about as I LOVE a good fish and chips. Maybe I went on an off day but after I ordered I saw the freezer behind the register and saw a paper box stacked with fish and chips with no lid or cover ontop. Was slightly off putting thinking in my head everything is freshly made. Food: ordered the classic 3 piece cod fried. Was so excited to take my first bite only to be Infiniti and beyond disappointed sadly. It was a decent batter but the fish was extremely dry and tasted very fishy as if it was not made anytime in the recent millennia. Had a freezer burnt taste and was unpleasant to say the very least with such good expectations. Service: the service was really quick and the server and lady at the register were very sweet and came by with napkins and mints afterwards which was a cute personal touch so I give them an extra star on that alone as they have nothing to do with the food coming from the kitchen. The food sucked, I ordered the 3 piece cod and I swear that the fish was so small that you could have put it on a keebler cracker. The fish was barely cooked and the fries were white in color. If I'm not mistaken French fries are supposed to be a golden color. My friend had the 4 piece and I spent $37 on about $4 worth of food. Their food is great but customer service is lacking. They have plastic containers for the vinegars they offer which include lids. Except the lids are ill fitted to the containers. This leads to difficulty trying to fill the containers and be able to snap the lids on. I made a togo order tonight on 9/20/2025 and was unable to close the lids on the plastic containers they offer for the vinegar. After trying to replace more than one lid, as they only had three left in the basket, I asked the cashier if they had more lids. She stated that was all the lids they had and would not get additional lids to replenish the basket. I found this to be poor customer service considering the price point of their food. Their plastic containers made available for vinegars on to go orders have been an issue for years now. Most of the time I cannot get the lid to fit the container. Im not sure why they continue to use these terrible containers but it would be nice if they would find a more suitable alternative at this stage. The employee seemed totally unconcerned with the issue as well. read more

Update to previous rating/review. Jim W of Ivar's apparently was offering canned excuses and response to poor quality service at Ivar's in Federal Way. It's been a week now and still no response other than having to submit my complaint to a web site. Between Ivar's and DoorDash it's a toss-up as to who has the worst customer service. We've canceled our subscription to DoorDash and it appears we will scratch Ivar's off our list of favorite restaurants. The way of the world today. Lip service. FANTASTIC service!! There were 2 ladies Nayeli and Krista working the front counter tonight. It was really hard to not observe them interacting with each other... and with their customers. They were each GENUINELY pleasant and attentive to each and every customer from the time each entered... while taking each order... to the hand delivery of the food... and until the customer exited the establishment. It was calming... it felt natural... it was oddly yet wonderfully engaging to witness. These days, it has often become a rare experience to firsthand witness the best in individual humanity. Ivar's is one of those places with a small menu full of items done right. Their chowder is delicious, and their fries and Caesar salad are very good. Service is quick and friendly. Ive been coming here for years and have never had any problems with anything. Last night my roommate and I were craving seafood and decided to go to Ivars. The place was busy as it was prime dinner time, but we went through the line rather fast. May, took our order and was very patient when we had questions. We waited outside for our food. Once we got our food we went home. When we got home we realized we were missing an extra 3 piece of fish. We tried to call Ivars all evening, but the number was busy for my roommate, and on my phone, "the number cannot dial through".Odd. Today I called. Got through no problem and told the lady who picked up the phone about my missing order. I have no receipt as it wasnt put in the bag, but I can tell her my order, the approx time or order, and I paid with my credit card (not knowing if they could look up my ticket in their system or not). May said, I remember the order. I took it myself. She apologized immediately telling me she remembers seeing the random 3 piece sitting on the counter the night before. She offered to give us a fresh 3 piece if we could come by today. I told her my roommate would come by after he got off of work. When my roommate got to Ivars, he got to the cashier and said he was there for a missing 3 piece fish order from yesterday. The cashier knew exactly what he was talking about, letting us know that May the GM was in the back...and was very apologetic for the mistake. Even put in a free key lime cheesecake as a sorry for our mistake, which was SUPER appreciated. May, the GM, and the Staff at Federal Way Ivars deserves a gold star. Ivar's didn't disappoint. Too bad they're no longer in the SEATAC airport's food court. Hopefully, they'll be back after the renovation is complete. This is a classic staple around the Seattle area. I placed my order online via Grubhub and when I arrived, it was ready and complete. Their fish is nice and crispy and has just the right amount of batter. Clam chowder is creamy and full of clams. I've been really looking forward to trying this place out. I seen it in Seattle and was happy to see one when I moved down south. I wasn't sure what to expect but upon arrival it looked very clean and well organized. Everyone was friendly and we felt very welcomed. My nieces and nephew ordered fish and chips, I had salad with crab meat. Both were excellent choices. Everything tasted super fresh and seemed like it was made to order. Fish was super tasty and fried were perfectly crispy. My salad was very delicious and although it looked smaller, was pretty feeling. I can't wait to return and try the other food options! I would highly recommend this place, I've been across the way at the other seafood "place" and didn't feel good about the meal, while paying double the price! **Update** Had take out and was pretty disappointed. Although I would prefer to eat there I couldn't do it today. But I was craving the d crab salad. Had the salad, fish and chips, shrimp and chips, shrimp cocktail. Ok, so we have been eating at Ivars for years. We have always had a delicious meal. Well, that changed two weeks ago. We went on Fridays because as most people know there is BOGO for the fish and chips during December. So, we went the first Friday and it was packed. Okay, I understand the crowd. I do not understand the taste and the quality of the fish and chips. The fish smelled very fishy (usually not the case with cod) and the chips were old and stale. I was shocked because if you were busy, wouldn't the meal be fresh? Ok, so we'll try the next Friday (Maybe this was a one off). I waited in the car as we were taking it to go. All of a sudden, I smelled fish and not in a good way. People were getting into the car next to us and the odor from the fish was terrible. We took the food home and much to my dismay, our meal was disgusting! The fries were old and cold and the fish had a rank smell. Why???? I am not happy at all. Oh, and the size of the fish was tiny.
