I definitely should have listened to my fellow yelpers on this one. Unfortunately, the inviting atmosphere does not match the unappetizing food. Walked in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and the place was absolutely empty. Needless to say the street was busy other restaurants were pretty packed. My dining partner and I decided to stay anyway; attributing to the fact that the restaurant was at the end of the block, away from the chaos of Oldtown. Our waitress was super sweet and handed us the happy hour menu, even though it was not happy hour. We decided on blue moons, guacamole with chips, casa chicken quesadilla, chicken empanadas, potato balls, calamari, nachos (sub chorizo with chicken-$2 extra) and sweet potato fries (to share). The food was super greasy, pretty bland, and was probably frozen and thawed. The deliverance of the food was also unacceptable; the waiter (who was not the girl who took the order) was holding the plates incorrectly and had fingers touching the plates where the food was sitting. After sending some plates back and having the items remade (or so we thought), we began tasting. None of the dishes were tasty, and the only item I found tolerable was the sweet potato fries. Absolutely THE WORST Mexican food I've EVER HAD!!! They draw you in with a mariachi band that has a Caucasian guy doing the "mariachi grito" in order to distract you from the overly priced, dreadfully underseasoned, sadly overcooked, severely understaffed, overwhelmingly heartbreaking, idiotic concept of a restaurant. When my date and I got there Saturday night, there were some open seats throughout the restaurant but wanted to seat us in a corner with no view hidden out of sight which was the beginning of the irritation. When I asked to sit at another open booth, they hesitantly agreed but first stated that we had an hour before it would be used only for bottle service. Ceviche- Laughably priced at $14 for a measly cup of dreadful fish ceviche with LESS than a handful of unseasoned chips. This lackluster excuse for ceviche barely had any flavor. No salt; barely any lemon/lime juice; no spice; and sweet peppers?!?! Pollo en Mole- What can I say, but again, it all went horribly wrong. First, the rice was overcooked, and sad to say that the beans were the "best" tasting item from the whole plate. The mole itself was severely underseasoned, felt as if the spices were raw and not toasted, bland with no remote signs of heat, and was sadly still missing something. For a packed house, they only had TWO waitresses that I saw and part of the time they were conversing with other staff instead of helping customers out. We saw her 3 times: when we ordered; right when we got our food but before we tried it; and when we paid 30 minutes after walking in to get the hell out of there ASAP! If there's one thing people know about me, it's that I like to sit and enjoy my meal with the company I'm with and FINISH what I order. So for me to not even eat HALF ofthe tiny bowl, nor my date her meal should REALLY say something about the depressing gruel that they "serve" here. SADLY, this place feels as if the food here is made for 4th or 5th generation "Chicano/as" that have lost touch with their roots and don't know the difference between authentic Mexican cuisine/grandma's food, and the white-washed slop that they serve here. Put it this way, TACO BELL has more authentic and better tasting food than this disgrace of an establishment. Whomever came up with the menu and recipes CLEARLY has no experience with Mexican cuisine and should either resign or close this place down IMMEDIATELY. read more

This place is WHACK. We traveled here in a limo from Los Angeles to celebrate my friends birthday. She had been coordinating with the "promoter" for awhile, and had set up a table and bottle service, and asked all the appropriate questions...what time do we have to be there by, will one bottle cover all 17 of us, etc. He said he had the hook up and that there would be no problems. We get there, and they don't let us in because we missed the 10:30pm cut off guest list, and they said that table service covered 6 people and everyone else would have to pay. LAME. We've partied all over LA and Hollywood and never had this sort of problem. It's only Pasadena for crying out loud. Since I can't Yelp the promoter, and I associate him with this place, it gets the bad review. Plus, the door guys were major d-bags. They said the place was at capacity, but we watched 20+ people come out while we were in line. Sunday I came here and Courtney was amazing! Super helpful and attentive. She knew her drinks too. I come here Thursday and some girl was back there named Jenny and she was horrible. Like the other reviewer said she only cared about herself. I tried to get her attention several times and she ignored me and my friend. So I just put cash on the bar and left. I'm only coming back here when Courtney works So when everyone goes asks for Courtney! Super nice and she will treat you right! This girl deserves better than this horrible place. So I've been here twice now, and despite the three star review there is something about ix tapa that makes me want to go again. It's an interesting place, and they have killer happy hour specials that last basically all evening. The servers and bartenders are all awesome, really attentive and in a good mood like they enjoyed being there. It's the food itself and the drinks that were just...really sub par. I'll start with the drinks, since I've been to their happy hour. They have some decent beers but I went for the margarita...it was horrible. Jose Cuervo and Walmart off brand mixer would have tasted better than whatever it is they serve. Nasty. For $1.99 though I guess that's to be expected...but still. The food wasn't bad in a sense that it was prepared wrong, it was just badly in need of seasoning. The sweet potato fries didn't taste like they had any salt at all. All in all everything was not horrible, but not great either. I do like electronic music and I see some other reviewers complaining about it being played - I'd be stoked to find a good electro spot in LA. I find it very annoying when businesses advertise incorrect information on their websites/social media. In this day and age of technology, people research things ahead of time... at least I do. And updating your menu on your website should be a priority. They have had PLENTY of time to update the prices on their website... My first visit was in April 2015, then again in May, and my last time a few days ago. Their website says happy hour prices on margaritas are $5 glass / $23 pitcher... however on their menus in person, it says $7 glass / $26 pitcher. I can't comment for sure on the hours of happy hour times though... website says 4-7 daily, but the hostess didn't seem to know when we asked. Me and 1 friend shared a pitcher... we both barely drink, so we're lightweights and didn't feel like there was any alcohol in the margaritas at all. Eh, not impressed. I've been here on weekend nights when it's a trashy club. There is almost always a long line (I'm lucky that my friends are pretty.... it's really the only reason I hang out with them, because they're drunks), and we almost always stay for about 20 minutes..... until there is a near-fight in the bathroom, or too many creepers, or it's just too crowded to move. But hey, what do we go to clubs for? I'm not slamming it for any of that. I came here on a Sunday evening with a friend... we just wanted a margarita. It was some kind of DJ competition, but the bouncer talked us into staying anyway. Since no one was serving our table, we waited at the bar for a good 15 minutes before being noticed (Pasadena parking meters aren't cheap, so in this case, time really is money, guys). The bartender would shoot us glances as he served others, but no acknowledgement or "I'll be right with you" in any way. We finally asked for margaritas. "What kind?" he said." "What kind do you have?" "I don't know," he said, as he was turning his back to us to walk away. We finally ordered a strawberry and a mango, because we figured all cantinas had those. They tasted like someone had poured one of those pre-mixed pouches of alcohol into a glass.... The kind you get from the grocery store and are supposed to freeze and pour..... but they never really freeze and they never have much alcohol. They tasted like fake sugar and not at ALL like tequila. My friend didn't even finish hers, and she is a huge fan of anything alcoholic. We just wanted to get out of there. This place kinda sucks. Chicken mole was crap. It was hard and tasted like cardboard. The sauce was some kinda watery "spice" rice, which wasn't very tasty, and the beans were kinda cold and rubbery. This is the former Fred's (and prior to that Moose's) and the changes are nice. There is a lounge and bar area with flat screen TVs everywhere, pretty big dining space and I guess room for a dance floor in the back. I haven't seen the evening or happy hour setup, tho. I went with some co-workers for lunch today, and I'm giving the food 3 stars. I got chicken enchiladas in salsa verde, and most of my friends got similar dishes or tacos. The enchiladas had the taste of salsa verde, but in a slightly lighter, cream-colored sauce. It tasted fine, and the rice and beans were pretty standand. We all agreed, tho, that the food temperature could be warmer, but since this is a new place the kitchen should be allowed some time to work all of this out. Service was prompt and friendly, waters refilled, etc so that's always nice. I also like the uniforms - the waitstaff and busboys wear a very smart-looking blue shirt, and the napkin on your table matches the color. The lights also have a nice look to them - mostly white with a pattern, until you notice that there's Ix*tapa printed all around the sides. Not sure how eager I am to return, but it's nice to have another alternative in my lunch rotation. read more

I had left something there and called repeatedly only to be hung up on every single time, messaged them, and came back the following day only to be told what I left was thrown away. Pretty sure it's standard restaurant etiquette to hold things for at least a day before throwing it away... it was my 50 dollar Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottle (64 oz). Personally, I think one of their kitchen staff took it, because it's too nice to just "throw away." Very rude, and inconsiderate. Doesn't seem like they care about returning customers / being polite if you forgot a personal item at their establishment...I was told they also have a lost and found, so something isn't adding up...plus the fact that I called over 5 times to make sure they held onto it, and the guy who found it said he set it aside, yet someone discarded it still? I had been avoiding this place like the plague for a while now because I didn't think I'd have fun at a place like this, but I must confess that after coming here for my 22nd birthday, this place isn't so bad. I came here around 10:30ish for my 22nd birthday and my best friends 22nd as well on a Thursday night. There was so cover charge and beers, including Blue Moon, were only $3. The bartenders are pretty friendly and nice, that includes bouncer. However, my friends come here a lot and know basically all the workers, so perhaps that's why I was graced with great service by them. There are beer pong tables inside, two, and a good amount of tables to hangout by and put down your drinks. On the innermost part of the bar there is also a dance floor and a dj. The music is a blend of hip-hop, Edm, and Spanish music. It's a decent size and I know this place gets crowded on the weekends. I don't know if I would comeback, but I guess I wouldn't be opposed to the idea. read more

I've come here often and the music & drinks are always really good. Which is the main reason I always come back! However, last night I got a table, which I was excited about because the prices was reasonable. Once we got our bottle and our mixers, our waitress told me that she would come check on us in alittle to make sure we didn't need anything else. She NEVER came back. No one did. We wanted a pitcher of water and we went down to the front desk to ask for our waitress and she was standing there and told us she would send someone up. NO ONE came! So we waiting another 20 min and I went to the bar and asked for water and the bartender upstairs said "I don't service you, you have to ask your waitress" and I told him that we told her and she never brought anything and he just shrugged his shoulders. And so we went back down to the front desk and asked again for a pitcher of water and finally 30 min after asking a second time they bring a pitcher of water. At that point we were already finished with the bottle & ready to just leave. I was so fed up because just a simple thing couldn't be done. I came here for a quick early lunch in between class and studying. Around 5pm on a Wednesday, not crowded at all for dinner- I was the only one there. This may be possible because they open in the evening. I know that it usually turns into a full on club at night. Which by the way, I've been a few times and always had a great time, the music & energy is typically pretty good during club hours. While continued my dinner, I the manager was very attentive, nice and friendly. The bartender was also very nice. I ordered the Albondigas and it was delicious! I was looking for a real authentic Mexican soup & I got it. I highly recommend the dish. I also noticed they had a pretty good happy hour going on (although I didn't try it). We wanted to watch Game 7 of the Dodgers vs Brewers series and had the last minute idea to watch it at a restaurant instead of at home. We were trying to think of a place that was close by and wouldn't be totally crowded, and my sister and I both thought of Ix Tapa. In hindsight, I guess it's a bad sign if a place is known best for not being crowded. We had good seating and they had the game on most of the TVs, which were large and clear. One of the TVs did have a glitch for about 5-10 minutes but it didn't cause an issue. The food was fine. We have eaten here before so we know that it is sort of like El Torito or Acapulco, not authentic, just semi greasy Mexican-ish food that isn't bad if you know what to expect. They had a Game Time menu with discounts, which were cheaper than their regular food and drink prices but not great deals. The service was the main issue for the low rating. My sister and I ordered margaritas and the rest of the group had beer. Hers was a regular margarita with Cazadores and I asked for a skinny margarita, which was a little watery tasting but at least it wasn't sweet. When the whole table asked for another round, they brought more beers but put one margarita between me and my sister, and it was in a pint glass, not the regular margarita glasses we had before. We were like, 'is this a different drink, and are we supposed to share it?'. We managed to flag down the server to ask for one more margarita. Both of them had a weird vanilla taste that our previous ones didn't have, and mine DEFINITELY wasn't a skinny margarita. When we got the check, they had charged for two Cadillac margaritas. They didn't taste like Cadillac margaritas but they definitely weren't what we had asked for, and were more expensive. In general the service could have been better since they were not very busy, but it wasn't a terrible experience. I would definitely go elsewhere if I wanted either great food and drinks, or super great deals. But for a place with comfortable seating and big TVs for games, this place will still do in a pinch. read more

This taco place is literally life changing. Before going to this exquisite dining establishment I was leading a directionless life. When I bit into the first taco, my taste buds exploded with flavor, the taste made me realize where I should go in life and how I should enjoy every bit of it. After my second bite, I looked up as the clouds parted and the rays of sunshine illuminated the man of my dreams on his white Byrd scooter. We are now getting married tomorrow and already have two dogs together! With my third bite, I realized what the meaning of life was and now I am in charge of my very own hot yoga studio. They had customers, but they weren't busy, yet the service was slow as EF! We ordered food from the happy hour menu, when we got our food, they were small as EFFF! I mean it's HAPPY HOUR, what happened to serving the same amount of food with half price??? This place freaking serves you food less than half! I have not come here on a weekend at night to get my boogie on but I do plan on going on a Tuesday night to check out the free salsa classes they give with a purchase of dinner. How can you mess these up? The portions were small and the food was bland. I ordered a Chelada and for a mexican bar you should know how to make one! It was the nastiest drink i've ever had...I have to say that the can Chelada is so much better and that's not saying much! My advice is never go here because it's just a waste of your money. I was walking around the area during my lunch break, and came upon this place with a big sign talking about their lunch buffet. Instantly I was intrigued. I walked in and was told to sit anywhere I like. It was a beautiful day so I chose the outside patio. As soon as I did, I was instantly greeted with water, chips & salsa, talk about great service. I just want to mention, I drink water non-stop.. like seriously non-stop. Every time I finished a glass I never had to go pull someone over to request a refill. One of the servers/bussers was already there by my side to fill up my glass, each and every time. Love that about them. Their buffet features a guy making tacos right in front of you which options of 4 different meats. Other dishes includes green and red enchiladas, beans, rice, salads, AND SO MUCH MORE. I've had a few Mexican buffets before, and honestly this is the best. They have a large bowl with the bombest guacamole and personally I love to scoop on about as much to cover half my plate, shit's like crack. Edit: Guacamole no longer served with the buffet :( My personal favorite, is the dessert offerings of cheesecake, jello, flan and churros, YUM. They also do a day time happy hour of $2 beers and $1 margs. I'm not sure if that's just Monday or Monday-Friday, but damn for Old Pasadena that's an awesome deal. Bouncers like to abuse their power and treat you incredibly rudely. There were 3 bouncers and all 3 ignored us even though there was nobody near the entrance and it wasn't a busy Thursday night, so we walked in pretty slowly, and then decided to acknowledge us and made us back alllll the way out past the door frame even though the guy who carded came from the inside with us. Then the two other bouncers who were supposed to be checking IDs joined in, swiped each ID and stared thoroughly at the card and us before moving on to the next person. They stopped half of us one by one on our way inside and told us to look into the camera. Not even all of us. And then when you're inside, they herd you like cattle. Just full of attitude all around. I understand the need to check IDs, but the attitude and the way we were treated was unjustified. For the record, I was with three other 22 year olds, dressed in bar clothes like everyone else, and were completely sober and respectful in our approach, but still were treated like delinquents. So we came where for dinner. The waiter was amazing, the food and drinks were good as well. We went to see a comedy show then went back because the waiter said it would be good there to have some drinks and dance. So when we got there, theirs a tree on the side and my friend had some big heels on and was going to slip and the bouncer instead of asking if she was ok he said you guys are not coming in here lol me my husband and her husband told him we were not drunk but it was understanding that he might of thought that so we just went to another place. Edit: Looked through the reviews and discrimination happens quite often here. How has this place not been shut down? So many laws broken daily without remorse. Edit #2: What a horrible reply from the owner. No acknowledgement to the specific situation. Just the same copy/paste reply he gives to everyone with a complaint (usually about discrimination, look through them) in order to save face in front of the general public. What a horrible establishment. Someone should really organize a protest in front of the club. ---------------- This place blatantly and unapologetically discriminated against me and made a mockery of me. I plan to sue, but until my case gets sorted out I need everyone to know the kind of employees this establishment hires, and the lack of training and awareness they possess towards disabilities. I've had a mild case of cerebral palsy all my life. I sometimes refer to myself as "almost normal" because that explains the experiences I face regularly. My condition is so mild that aside from a limp that comes as a result of a weaker left side, I otherwise pass as fully physically able. Unfortunately, having a mild disability also causes people to sometimes invalidate my disability and the effects it has on my body and movements. Last night I was denied entry as I was walking into the bar because my condition caused me to spasm and trip. I was immediately pulled aside to leave, and despite my friends and I explaining to them multiple times that I had a disability, they didn't care. I also let them know I have medical documentation that proves my disability, but they didn't care. They showed no understanding. They were in too deep and thought the best solution was to just get rid of us instead of admitting fault. I directly asked the manager (pictured below) after he said they didn't know what the circumstances were that caused me to trip, "you're looking at me now. You're talking to me. I've been standing here. Do I look intoxicated?" To which he replied he doesn't know how to tell if someone is intoxicated. My mind was blown. This guy works in a bar. He then started claiming he doesn't in fact work there even after introducing himself as the manager. He knew damn well I wasn't intoxicated. He just panicked because of he admitted wrongdoing he thought I would have leverage in a court case. Which I actually would not have pursued had I been offered a genuine apology because I care more about educating people than seeking revenge for ignorance. But they refused to be educated. I had a conversation with staff for over 30 minutes. At this point it was clear they knew I was not intoxicated to the point of not walking a straight line or being of sound mind, but instead of apologizing, which I would have accepted, they continued to say "we can do whatever we want". When my friend asked the bouncer (pictured below) if he was trained on cerebral palsy, he said he was. When she asked him why he can't recognize it, he said it is not his job to. He then dismissed us, then condescendingly kept saying "nooooo" when pressed for his name. If he wasn't worried and knew what he was doing wasn't wrong, he wouldn't have been so fearful. My condition already makes me feel so powerless at times; but that wasn't enough for them. They wanted to be sure I felt like nothing. They silenced me, instead of viewing this as a opportunity to educate themselves on a world that falls a little outside of normal; a world I live in everyday and suffer in because of people like them. I was so embarrassed because I felt like I ruined my friends' night, but they kept assuring me it wasn't my fault. I can't control my disability; they can, however, control their ignorance by taking initiative to educate and train themselves as well as treat people with kindness and not disregard a real problem people suffer with. I had only had 3 shots; my friends had both drank much more than me. I offered to take a breathalyzer or walk again to show them it was just my disability taking over before. My friends and I addressed our concerns with multiple staff but they were too proud to admit they're wrong and didn't view 3 women as a threat. The staff were all men. I get it, you can do whatever you want. So what you want is to not care? What you want is to never try to understand special circumstances? What you want is to condescendingly look down upon and disregard what you don't understand? Is this the experience every person with a disability should expect? read more
