I've been a huge fan of Izzy's for about 5 years now. Each time we'd plan a trip to AVL for a concert or otherwise, a few trips to Izzy's would always be in the cards. Whether it was early in the morning or later afternoon, the coffee is always awesome. They carry/sell/brew Counter Culture. Always a plus for any shop, in my opinion. Especially if you're in NC. I'm a huge fan of their Mexican Mocha. There's no doubt that its one stout drink, brother. No stingy level of cayenne on the tip of each sip and it'll definitely wake your senses. If you're not in the mood for something hot, the iced coffee is stellar. Not sure which roast they use from Counter Culture, but its smooth and stands up fine au originale. Seating is plentiful, music is awesome, cozy bathroom for patrons, and plenty of beer for when the sunlight sinks over the mountains. Perfect shop for good ol' AsheVegas. read more

Izzy's is THE destination for a consistently delicious cup of coffee in the downtown area. If you want to get crazy and go nuts, you should try out their cold brewed iced toddy coffee. But be careful, more than one can be dangerous. It get's busy here, so do everyone else a favor, plan on paying cash, it's a coffee bar! Who doesn't have 5 bucks in their wallet? Well not me at the moment, but let's be serious here. The baristas are all kind, knowledgeable, and great conversationalists. It's a real pleasure to order a drink here and take a few moments to shoot the shit as they say. Okay, so this place no doubtably has great coffee. I got the maté latte with the blueberry lemon scone and my husband got their house coffee with a blueberry bagel. This is a unique, casual, hipster vibe. They do not sell food, only bakery items and bagels so if you are looking for something heavy you may want to keep looking. The staff was so friendly and I would probably go back. The reason I'm not leaving 5 stars is because the place hits you in the face with an unpleasant b.o. smell from the moment you open the door. The only coffees I tried here were their Pumpkin Latte and Mexican Chocolate (iced) mocha, and honestly...they were orgasmic-ly heavenly! I have never had such delicious coffee creations before. The Pumpkin Pie Latte was super creamy and had just the right amount of pumpkin spices...so much that I could swear I was drinking liquefied pumpkin pie (not to imply that this was an overly sweet drink either, because it was not). The Mexican Chocolate was out of this world as well. The Cayenne pepper added a surprising and pleasing bang to this chocolate mocha that was perfectly balanced by spices and creamy cocoa taste. I went here because I saw that it was Asheville's #1 coffee spot, according to WNC's restaurant guide. It seems like it is mostly a locals' spot as well and had a wonderful Indie atmosphere. I most definitely have to agree with the review - it is a must-visit for people who are looking to try original and delicious coffee combination drinks. read more

Great staff, great menu, EXCELLENT prices and really good coffee. Izzy's is the place to go in downtown for good coffee without any bull. They have a snazzy old style Espresso Machine (that was broken last time I was in there) and freshly ground and brewed coffee. The staff is friendly and not pretentious (as you often find at a coffee house). Counter Culture coffee rules. We stopped into Izzy's during our day in Asheville to take a break. The place was small and intimate. It definitely isn't suitable for a large group of people, which was fine by us since there were only two of us. There are only a few tables, but the mid-afternoon wasn't crowded at all. The decor is minimal; I would not consider the atmosphere to be "cute" according to my style. However, the barista was very sweet and the coffee was great. We are boring coffee drinkers, so we just ordered 2 iced coffees. I asked for mine with vanilla syrup, which they make themselves along with a few other flavors. The coffee was bold and stronger than most iced coffees I've ordered, but I prefer it on the stronger side. They also had a small display of a few baked goods that looked like they were homemade. I was really eying some of their scones they had, but enforced my self control, which is a rare occurrence. I would definitely recommend this coffee shop for those looking to drop by and grab a drink. But if you plan on staying a while, I would look for a more cozy coffee shop as there are plenty within walking distance. read more

This coffee shop came fairly highly regarded. As travelers, we planned well in advance to visit based on the reviews. The service was unexpectedly atrocious. I ordered and the employee at the counter immediately turned his back and started making my coffee and then without another word told me the total after he handed it to me. I turned to my friend and said he would like to order too. While my friend was ordering, the employee started making another drink. I assumed it was a mobile order. Turns out he was more interested in expeditiously making the drinks for the "regulars" behind me that he treated with the upmost respect and kindness in pale comparison to how he treated me and my friend. PS they also don't offer skim milk as we were rudely notified of as if it were our fault for asking. The coffee isn't even good. I've had MUCH better lattes elsewhere (and not to sound like a snob, I try a caramel latte at almost every coffee shop I go to just to compare and find my favorite in new cities). read more

It's about time i m leaving a review for Izzy's, a good one too . I love this place I go as much as I can , for my taste they serve one of the best Espressos in AVL. Parking can be challenging but usually I m lucky enough to find something on the road. The open early and also have small food options mostly bagels, scones , cookies. When I m visiting other cities I dream of finding coffee shops like that. This is what local looks like to me. Local Artists display and sell their art , they sell their coffee in cups for the ones that stay and have a chance to people watch in a prime area in Asheville, everything gets recycled as good as possible. I enjoy hanging out at the small bar on the big window see how tourists try to spy into the shop to see it it would be something for them. I came across Izzy's Coffee Den accidentally as I was in search of a bathroom. The sign claimed the bathroom was for customers only so after projectile vomiting from drinking a little too much the night before, I decided to order myself a bagel. Now let me tell you about this bagel. This was the best damn bagel I've ever had in my life. It was an everything bagel with veggie cream cheese and it did wonders for me. A true culinary delicacy. The cream cheese to bagel ratio was flawless. The bagel itself was perfectly crispy on the outside with a soft glutinous interior. The cream cheese was beautifully whipped and the perfect addition to this delicious snack. 11/10 would recommend. Will be visiting again soon. read more

Only one person was working at the time but he did a great job at accommodating everyone and was time efficient. Homemade raspberry and lavender syrups were delicious. My girlfriend and I stopped by this place while walking around downtown. We simply stopped by for an iced coffee but left immediately after experiencing horrible service. I ordered a hazelnut iced coffee, and she ordered vanilla. The hazelnut was decent but far from great. She immediately said something after taking her first sip, stating that it tasted weird and not good at all. I tried it myself to see what she was talking about. The "vanilla" syrup tasted more like a bad bubble gum flavor. Honestly, it just tasted awful, so I walked to the counter to order another drink. Let me first say I never once asked for a free drink. I simply told the worker that it tasted weird and not good at all. I even had my wallet out, so I could purchase another drink. Instead of offering to fix the problem or even apologize, he immediately became very rude and defensive, saying that he's been making them all day and that nobody has complained. I told him he could try it himself, but he just went on in a condescending tone about how I must be wrong because that's how it was supposed to taste. I told him that I was simply letting him know that it did not taste good at all. He smugly said "ok" and went on helping the next customer. I threw away our drinks and walked out to find another place. I believe I was very pleasant while addressing this issue, and I was even prepared to purchase another drink. Izzy's is one of my favorite places to grab an afternoon pick me up! Working just up the street, I go to this coffee shop more than a few times a week. Between their City Bakery bagels and their great menu of coffee drinks, this coffee shop has it going on. They have delicious scones and cookies that are made in house, and they always seem to make my cappuccino's just right. The baristas are always friendly to me and the line moves fairly quick. It's a total dive so, be prepared to check out some interesting local art on the walls and sitting in chairs that don't match. The music selection is always a little eclectic and also always a little loud so, if you plan on reading a book or getting some studying done, be sure to bring your ear buds. This place is as Asheville as it gets in terms of personality. Check it out next time you're on Lexington and enjoy their special blended drinks or their house infused cream cheeses and locally baked goods. Whenever I am in Asheville, I make it a point to make a daily stop at Izzy's. The coffee, tea, and espresso are very good and very reasonably priced, the staff is warm, welcoming, eager to please, and quick. In addition to the coffee/tea, they also have a well-edited and excellent selection of craft beer. There's a rotating collection of local art on the walls, and Izzy's has genuinely free wi-fi (unlike certain chains I know). There's also a good bit of local color, a community vibe, and always an opportunity for an interesting chat-up with the locals that are in and out of this place all day...if you're an out-of-towner, be nice and you'll find out about something interesting going on that evening. They always have a special liquid confection on the board and if you are looking for something besides a regular cup o'joe, I highly recommend tasting whatever they've come up with. Last time I was there it was a lavender-scented earl grey tea with airy steamed milk and honey and it was DELICIOUS - reminded me of the tea I would drink at a weekend breakfast in a luxe New Delhi hotel....for two bucks! I take issue with the people who complain about their debit/credit card fee. This is a small, locally-owned business that doesn't have the massive bargaining clout that a large chain would, and the fee they charge to use a card reflects the card processing fees that they are charged. Remember card processing companies will charge you the same fee whether you are selling a $2 bottomless cup of coffee or a $100 textbook. I think it's fair...they are not passing on that card processing cost to all of their customers, only to the customers who CHOOSE to use a card - far more fair than making everyone pay a few cents extra for every single cup of warming goodness that they sell! read more

I have been to Izzy's on Lexington probably 5-6 times. Every time I go I guess I'm just hoping it wasn't as horrible as I remember it to be. Horrible service: All staff members are probably the most rude and inconsiderate people I have ever met. Not in an endearing way. Not in a "cool" way (if there were one) Just rude and disrespectful and in need of a shower. Way too expensive: A small Chai Latte was served in a 4 ounce cup and was about $4.00. The coffee is usually burnt and lukewarm and I'm not sure that the people writing out the sign know what kind of coffee they are serving. And they charge 50 cent if you run your card under $5.00.... Which makes that 4 ounce chai latte nearly $5.00. Now, the atmosphere feels like a dingy, dirty and cold basement with about five seats total in the place, all of which are horribly uncomfortable. The art is a joke. The place looks disgusting. I wish there were a comfortable, relaxed place to have coffee in Asheville. Most of the other coffee shops are for tourists, but at least everything isn't gross. read more
