Walked into this place on a whim without looking at reviews. Loved it! Gas lamps along brick archways inside. Kind of medieval modern. Kitchen you can see into. Tables seemed far away from each other, like you're in your own little domain. Great atmosphere. Artwork spotlighted on the walls. Light early 2000's club music in the background. Beautiful bar. My husband tried some of my steak and said it was the best he has ever had. Very enjoyable experience. Great wait staff, too. Not cheap, but very worth it. read more

My wife and I celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary at J. Alexander.....38 long, long , long years....nah just funnin. So we've done this celebratory at this restaurant a number of times and have enjoyed it every time. Good food, good atmosphere, and a great waitress, Leah. I wanted a cream horseradish for my prime rib and she actually went and got it and brought it to me immediately, I mean fast. Unlike other restaurants where I ask for something and 30 minutes later I get it. Loved the chocolate cake and ice cream for dessert! Hopefully my wife will keep me around for another 38 years and we'll be still coming to J. Alexander's when we're 107....doubtful though. read more

A great meal for Monday lunch. My son and I both ordered the baby back ribs and they were fantastic. Fall off the bone and tender, sauce was flavorful and the ribs were lathered in it. Daughter ordered the burger, customized to her liking, was spot on and she devoured it. Wife ordered Margherita flatbread and was shocked at the size of the pizza. Ended up bringing home half of it but thought is was good. A tad bit greasy but not overpowering. Ken was our server and he was outstanding. Attentive. Friendly. And welcoming. read more

I have been to this restaurant several times in different occasions. They have consistently good service and good food. The Mac and Cheese and The Mr. Jack crispy chicken is really good. The salads with sweetened croissants are so yummy. The portion size of the meals are really big. I'm always stuffed with leftovers. Brought my boyfriend for his birthday dinner. Our waitress, Lacey was so sweet and accommodating to our table. We started with a toast of Frangelico on the rocks and Calamari as our appetizer. So light and crisp and perfect. Best we have ever eaten. He ordered medium rare Prime Rib with side of mashed potatoes, au jus, and a horseradish dipping sauce for me. I tried a bite of his Prime Rib.......it was amazing!! Mashed potatoes were really good. I ordered the Crab Cakes with Parmesan Broccoli. I dipped bites of both in the horseradish sauce which oh my goodness.......so scrumptious! I ordered 2 pieces of Key Lime Pie to take home. One for me and one for a family member. Thanked the staff and Chef as we were exiting the restaurant. They were very appreciative of our glowing report of how wonderful the experience was and how perfect the food was. Great way to end the evening to my boyfriend's special day. This will be our new go to place for special occasions and will recommend to friends and family. read more

A long time customer of this location and restaurant - I was so looking forward to this Saturday night out. Wow - this place has gone down hill. We were seated near the bar and the staff was literally yelling - I felt as if I were in a campus bar. AWFUL ATMOSPHERE Food ( prime rib ) was good but could not compensate for dining experience. It's truly apparent how this restaurant and the quality had gone from fine dining to chain restaurant quality. J Gilbert's is across the street. For the same money you will get an elevated dining experience with better service. read more

My family goes here for just about any special occasion. We love the spinach/cheese dip appetizer, and almost all of us order the prime rib, which is to die for! My son, however, swears by the pork chop! We always get prompt service, even when there is a large number in our party. The ambiance is great for a date or any special occasion. read more

We had hoped and expected much better from this location. We came in today for my birthday that is actually tomorrow. It took approximately :50 minutes to get our meals, even though, others seated after us nearby received their meals. I'm guessing the server didn't enter our order in the computer, but I have no way to verify. I would really like to get value for what is spent, but today's $72 meal plus tip didn't satisfy that requirement. read more

You can always count on a good dining experience at a J Alexander's restaurant. I've eaten at several of these around the country & have never been disappointed. This one is no exception. I was traveling for business by myself & sat at the bar. Had a couple of good local IPAs, the service I was received was very attentive. They have a good wine list as well as beers, although it'd be nice to have a few more craft beers available. The ribs were fall off the bone with just the right amount of bbq sauce, not the best I've had but very good. The size of the serving was plentiful. The atmosphere is always classy but comfortable at the same time. Prices are reasonable for the area. You won't go wrong at a J Alexanders. read more

Went with relatives from out of state. Started off with the smoked fish dip which was very good . Two filets a salmon and a ribeye all were done as per requested. Excellent!! Our waitress Alexis was very good! Never bothersome but always there when needed. Great night! read more

The best prime rib we have ever tasted... medium rare with a bump.. we were traveling and will definitely visit again when we are in town. I've been a fan of J. Alexander's Prime Rib for years. I went there tonight (Wednesday) and was somewhat surprised it was on the menu... I thought that was a weekend treat, but since I usually go on weekends (maybe twice a year)... I may be mistaken. One thing I'm not mistaken about was tonight I received the worst example of Prime Rib I've ever had there, and certainly in the lower 25% that I've had anywhere. It looked pretty good on the plate, but it was so fibrous and lacked flavor. My first bite was a chew fest until I could slip an inedible chunk to my plate. I assumed it would get better. It didn't. I ate about 2/3 of the meat but without finding substantial improvement, brought the rest home for the dog. As I am prone, I paid the full bill, left a good tip, and let the server know after the fact. I told her that the next time I visit I will venture away from my standard. My wife loved her ribeye, and my cocktail was a generous pour and tasty... the Ceasar salad with anchovies was (unfortunately) the best part of the meal. Disappointing for a $200 meal. Seeing that they are batting 3.5 stars on Yelp, maybe I should have read more reviews before going. read more

We went on New Years Eve. We made reservations a month in advance. I thought they may have a special menu or items. I was very surprised to find many empty tables in the restaurant. I had the rotisserie chicken. It was okay. For the price, $22, I could have bought 3 rotisserie chickens from Costco. The Long Island Iced Tea was weak. read more

What sold this place was the waiter. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and flavors. We order the steak rolls which were much tastier than they appeared. The chimicurri sauce really packed flower and paired well with the dish. For my entree I ordered the Steak Maui and it was very well cool and prepared. You can definitely taste the marinade and it was very tender. I will say if you're in the mood for a Steak though I'd avoid this dish. While it was good it doesn't have that traditionally meat Steak flavor. I like sweat but it was a bit too sweet for me for meat. Again, it was a very good dish but I'm a Steak lover. I had The 614 for a cocktail and that was very good. Very smooth. And balanced the whiskey with other taste in a pleasing way for someone who wants something dark but not a Manhattan-esque drink. I definitely think this place would do well with adding more green items for sides for anyone trying to balance their meals aside from broccoli and asparagus. I'll definitely go again and try the Rattle Snake pasta. He really sold that dish. read more

Great lunch today with awesome friends! I ordered the Club sandwich which I shared with my hubby. It came with a side so I decided on the acorn squash. We also ordered a side of Mac and cheese to share. Our Club was piled high with meat,cheese,lettuce and tomato. It was very delicious and very fresh. The acorn squash had a brown sugar/cinnamon butter on the side which was tasty. The Mac and cheese was cheesy and they used shell macaroni, which is my favorite! There was plenty of food for sharing! We have been here a number of times and usually have a great overall experience. This was not the case yesterday and I wonder if the restaurant is under new management. Service was fairly slow but it was a busy night so that was expected. First, we ordered martinis, excited about the sidecar that comes with them at J. Alexander, which keeps the drink cold. All the tables around us had cocktails with sidecars. When they arrived without sidecars, we asked for them. They took at least 20 minutes to arrive and then not in ice. The liquor was so warm we didn't drink them. My steak burger was ordinary if a bit overcooked too. I asked for a baked potatoe instead of french fries. While it was fine with me, the potatoe I received was about half the size of the other baked potatoes that was being served around us. My husband had artic char which he says was good. We ordered key lime pie with ice cream on top. It arrived with a side dish of ice cream. Very large but it was also $7 for just the ice cream. So, overall, definitely not the experience we had hoped for last evening. read more

Had dinner here this evening with my family. Everything was fine and normal until one of our dishes came out. The salmon my little sister had was very over cooked and charred. Being her age she didn't really say much but I couldn't help to notice she wasn't eating it. Once I tried it I realized it was not very good. When the waitress came back I simply told her it wasn't very good and over cooked. She said she was sorry and walked away. When she returned with our dessert she had brought out an additional dessert and informed us that the desserts and plate that was overcooked would be taken care of. The point of this review is to give our waitress Lacey and the restaurant kudos for standing behind their product and taking care of the customer appropriately. So thanks, thanks for doing the right thing. Seems that business and customer service like this are hard to come by these days. read more

They ALWAYS screw up our to go order here, and don't seem to care....My husband and I ordered two Cypress salads to go tonight, and when we got home, we realized there were no cornbread croutons on the salad (which is what makes this salad so great). Last time, they didn't add the avocado. Another time they didn't add the pecans. And many other times, they've forgotten the croutons! I called to let them know about the croutons this time. The manager said she would make sure they'd give us a bag of croutons and apologized. When I went to pick them up, they only gave each of us 4 croutons per salad. I should have complained more, but I'm done with them. Additionally, their wine selection isn't great and doesn't change. read more

Honestly, the 4th star is dedicated to the carrot cake, I'm a total sucker for a good carrot cake and they delivered! We split a steak and also ordered a Caesar salad side upgrade. This caused a bit of a confusion, for some reason, since the steak comes with a side and I wanted a substitution, not a second dish. This was straightened out quickly though, and we enjoyed the meal. When offered dessert, we usually decline, but then the waitress mentioned the magic words "we have carrot cake" and that sealed the deal for me. The steak was well seasoned and well cooked - no complaints and certainly big enough to feed us both. The salad was good, although I really could have done with an anchovy upgrade, as I wasn't that impressed with the salad offering for that. The cake was my favorite part of the meal and left me with a warm happy glow as we exited. I did feel that the price was on the high end, considering we split one steak dinner, but the service was ok and the restaurant was nice for a relaxing dinner that we desperately needed. read more

Disappointed. Our server was very good, so no shame to her. Waited over an hour for food, which would have been forgiven if food was not mediocre. I have no issue paying $42 for a ribeye or $20 for calamari.. but not when both are Applebees quality. Perhaps we should have expected less, but J Alexander is still part of the name. My family has been going to this J Alexander's for over 15 years, thinking more like 20. We miss the croissants. My visit on Sunday was very disappointing-I ordered the Alexander salad with Salmon and it was extremely small. It could not have been any bigger than a cup of lettuce mixture. It was even smaller than most side salads at other restaurants. The salmon was good, but I left hungry. I also ordered a Diet Coke and it was definitely not Diet Coke -it tasted more like Coke Zero. read more

The manager came out and said she would take a picture of it and said these things happens sometimes when making fresh food. I came here strictly for the Philly egg rolls. I ordered take out and I didn't like the fact that they weren't cut. They also weren't as cheesy as they usually are. Lastly there was more fat that usual. So overall these egg-rolls were okay, but at 4 bucks a piece I wanted them to blow my mind like they usually do. They dont have one in Charlotte so I was really really ready for my usual mind blowing experience. We had their deviled eggs which were ok but too much relish. The bacon was a nice touch. The salad came with a croissant which was also nice. The issue was the filet. My hubby prefers his steak butterflied and medium well. We read the fine print on the menu that stated that they do not guarantee above medium well doneness. How could a restaurant that has "grill" in their name not be able to grill meat to a customer's order? The crab cakes were ok but overpriced. read more

Went here on a corporate luncheon. The atmosphere was very nice. The prices were actually pretty reasonable. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive. I got the steak and fries.
