I'm a fan of J Alexander going back 20 years to when we lived in Dayton, OH, where there was a J Alexander near our house. I loved their prime rib, steaks, and their signature salad. I wanted to try this branch of the chain when I visited Birmingham. Everything is as I remembered, though the menu has changed slightly. Portion sizes are smaller than I remembered, but it's still a good value for the money, along with quality food. The prime rib is every bit as tender and juicy as I remembered. Terrible experience for waiting/reservations. First off, they don't take reservations or call ahead seating. Second, they won't even put you on a waiting list until "everyone is in the building." So when I arrived here early to get myself and a couple of friends on the list, they made me sit there until all 5 could be accounted for. Their response was "we are doing the best we can." Went on 4th of July! Renamed from J Alexanders to Redlands Grill. The menu was the same, however the food very much not. I did like the Margherita Flat Bread however my rattlesnake pasta was gross. That'd what I always get but this time it was not good at all. There was oil running out of the pasta and the flavor was bland. The service was really good though. My daughter and I had to go to Birmingham yesterday for an appointment and decided we would stop by to support our favorite Bham restaurant- Redlands. We called ahead 10 mins expecting to wait about 15-20 minutes more for our order. We were surprised to find we were the only car waiting. After a total of 45 minutes of waiting (for queso and a grilled chicken salad - the same thing we always order and love when dining in) we received our meal. The hostess was not wearing a mask and came rather close to the car which was a little unexpected. Then we drove off only to find we were given no utensils. We opened our meal to discover what looked like week old chicken (everyone knows when chicken looks old) and not the best quality lettuce. I know produce is difficult to get right now and would've understood had they told me I should get something else on the menu. I'm so disappointed in the quality of this $32 meal. We love Redlands and expected so much more (especially when the restaurant is completely empty). As we were leaving, we saw the hostess having to bring another cup and utensils to a car which she had forgotten again. I say this as a person who never leaves reviews and is gracious with restaurants. I'd suggest waiting until they open again to eat Redlands. read more

Ordered their black bean soup which was a misnomer because it had ham in it. Would have appreciated to have it appropriately labeled as "black bean and ham" soup. Also ordered their Ahi Tuna salad medium rare, it had delicious flavor but it was too soft and mushy so I couldn't finish it. Our server seemed rushed and addressed my eating partner for the most part ignoring my presence. They get the stars for the flavor in the salad and that they didn't ask me to pay for the meal. read more

Went on a Wednesday night and the place was packed. Waited about 10 minutes and was seated. Waitstaff was incredible! Teamwork atmosphere and so willing to please! We both decided on the steak burger, what a great decision! Their homemade "1000 island" dressing, they call it something else, is magical on this burger! I am not usually a fan but it is mouthwatering on this burger! And let's not forget the carrot cake, best I have ever had and I've had some great carrot cake but this one is life altering! My wife and I had a great late dinner here tonight. The margarita flatbread was a great start! I had a caesar salad before my main course which was also very good. My wife had the barbecue salmon which I tasted and was awesome. I had the ahi tuna which just enough and very good. Finally, we shared their famous carrot cake, which was a bargain for $7. Usually a great experience but this was an off night. The server was rude and the manager was smarmy. When we asked to be seated we indicated that we would have additional guests joining us as the hostess set us at a table for four when our party was going to be five. When the additional guest arrived there was no opportunity for us to have additional seating without going back on the waitlist nevertheless we had received our food. I stopped here for dinner on a Thursday evening and sat at the bar. I've never been to J. Alexander's before although there is one very close to my house in the Baton Rouge area. Service was quick and the bartenders were nice and personable. I ordered a cocktail that included rum, mint leaves, blueberry jam and another liquor and it was quite refreshing (it was called the 205 I believe). I then ordered the Cajun Ribeye MR and it came with a loaded potato and drawn butter for the steak. The ribeye was cooked to a perfect medium rare and the cut of meat was excellent. The potato was huge and loaded with cheese, bacon and butter. The only part of my meal that is keeping this from a 5 star review is that I wouldn't consider my ribeye ''cajun''. I was expecting big bold flavors and even a little heat with some cayenne pepper perhaps but instead the steak was a little on the bland side. I had to add a generous amount of salt and pepper to my steak after the first couple of bites to enhance the flavor. Overall a great experience and I will return to J. I always receive exceptional service at this location. This is a nice chain restaurant for a business lunch. The menu is diverse, the food is well prepared and the setting provides enough room between tables to be able to speak with your party without overhearing everyone elses conversation. I've had sandwiches, salads, steaks and seafood all items have been equally well prepared. The best item I've had would be the match stick fries served with the steak and fries. Not do diminish a perfectly executed medium rare steak but the cripsy match stick fries were awesome! read more

Ok so after a long day of working in the yard, my husband pops up and says, "Hey, let's go eat at Redlands!" We (2 adults/2 kids) all agreed to try a new place, even though we have been to J. Alexander's before.....this is different?!? Upon entering l, all looks really the same except it seemed so much busier. This is a good thing, right? After a moderate wait and watching heaping plates of food being served we were seated in a nice secluded corner. Scanning the menu revealed a price comparison to that of a 5 Star restaurant. Appetizers were double the price than a higher priced restaurant. Initially meeting our server, was a pleasant introduction. Being that we had 2 kids with us we were a bit taken aback as there were no physical kids menus and the offering was dismally familiar to an "average" place, but this wasn't average, right? So the kids ordered from the adult menu and no mention of spice was given, even when asked about ingredients. After we waited for what seemed like an eternity(25 mins), we sent a search party out to locate our server and she/he finally arrived. All glasses empty and Needless to say, one child was getting a redo on steak tacos due to unmentioned spice and Our other child was getting a recook on a bleeding steak, as it was way undercooked. The veggies were very bland at best. We were trying to be nice about the tiny mishaps with the food but our server became rude and even more distant. Because one mention of dessert and our server was tossing out spoons and plates when we had not even finished our meal yet. Satisfactorily finishing up our food we went for the long haul and ordered the crème brûlée and all I can say is that Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry would have approved of the presentation and fresh fruit but nothing else. There was this little odd cheese dollop on top that resembled lard in looks and flavor. The crème was more like cottage cheese, a fail due to overcooking, and the sugar top had a somewhat burnt flavor. Our ticket was given as a folded up sort of note and after placing our credit card down, the server casually reached, stretching as far as she/he could, and rudely snatched the ticket and card while trying to avert falling while saying nothing! We almost didn't see a face....just an arm and hand. The total was much more than deserved and we decided that a repeat to this restaurant will not happen again. Instead, we decided that we would much rather spend that kind of dollar amounts at a place more like Bonefish Grill or Seasons 52. My husband had the tenderloin kabob and I ordered the steak Maui. The kabob was delish but the steak was a little tough for my liking. Also, if you order your steak medium rare, it is REALLY medium rare! Portion size was just right. Service was excellent. I would tack on an extra dollar sign in the description. Came in for dinner with a large party and was told we could not be seated until our entire party was here. However, we watched two large parties go ahead of us whose party was not complete. When we asked how long it would be for us to be seated we were again told our entire party had to be here before they could tell us a wait time. Once we indicated our entire party was here we were then informed ten minutes later the wait would be at lest thirty minutes and that they could not accommodate a large party our size at one table. Seriously, they could not have informed us if this when we first arrived? What kind of customer service do you pride yourself on? It is truly unacceptable to have told the receptionist the party size and at the time if check in not be told we all can not sit together. read more

This place has wonderful food. Nice atmosphere and close to shopping :) We dined here and were treated well. The slow roasted prime was the bomb. Cooked to perfection and cut like butter. The grilled artichokes were absolutely divine. I am a native Californian and have rarely tasted such a good quality artichoke in my many years in the South. I was so happy to taste these wonderful appetizers. Overall, this is a great date place or nice after-shopping sit down meal. Went here for my husband birthday dinner all the food was amazing and the service exemplary. The reason I can't give a five is my sons truck was damaged by someone trying to break in his truck. This has happened before according to the staff after letting them know what had occurred in the parking lot of there restaurant. So be careful where you park if you have a F-150. Make sure not to park in the back. This is a problem all around Birmingham according to the Police Officer that came and made a report. read more

You can't eat everybody's ribs, but I took a chance tonight and ordered the baby back ribs. I was not dissapointed. My main concern waa that there is no polite or clean way to eat ribs, however, J Alexander made my life easier by cooking ribs in a way where the meat fell right off the bone. No knife necessary. Had I not be so hungry I definitely would have been able to share the ribs with another person. Instead of fries I opted for the not your ordinary Mac n' cheese and the roasted artichokes. The mac n' cheese was delicious but I was a little disappointed with the artichokes. They weren't as seasoned as I would have like them to be. For dessert we had the chocolate cake, which is just rich enough where I can't eat the whole thing in one sitting. Strangely it taste exactly like a brownie which is a bonus. Just finished, my food was delicious, although there was more chicken than pasta but it was delicious. The only problem with them was my mom and I made a reservation in the phone with one of hostesses and when we arrived they pretended that we didn't speak with anyone. We had to speak to a manager and he said, "ma'am, we don't want any trouble". We weren't starting any trouble, we're informing you that your hostess made a mistake. There are 9 of us and 5 of us had to be seated 20 minutes before the other. If they were not accepting reservations they should have told us on the phone. This situation could have been handled better. For a restaurant that receives such high reviews it has let me down tremendously. read more

If you want an abundance of good food, a quiet atmosphere, great service, and a place to catch up with relatives for lunch, this is the place to go. My cousin and I ordered the chicken salad, rice, and brioche. It was delicious and it made two more meals for me. My cousin took the same amount of food home. My husband got the prime rib sandwich with fries. He was so happy to see that they were the shoestring fries. Even he brought home half the sandwich to eat later. Really disappointed! I worked at a J. alexanders for 4 years in college. Hadn't been to one in probably 5 years. My husband and I we're passing through on a road trip, and wanted to order food to go, as we had been in the car for 10 hours. I spoke to a manager and asked if he could please take a to go order over the phone for us, and make an exception as we're going to Atlanta and didn't want to wait for an extra 20 min or so for our food to be ready. Just wanted to grab it and get on the road. He said no, we can't make any exceptions! Talk about terrible hospitality, especially to a former employee of the company! All I'm asking is for them to take a to go order, for 2 people, take my credit card info and I'll be there in 20 min. It was 5:15pm, not like they were super busy. Needless to say, in some situations, exceptions should be made in order to provide good hospitality, especially when it's this simple. read more
