Happy neighbor here. Merus Grill is a nice restaurant in a great location. I've lived next to this location (I literally look at it when walking out my front door) for 16 years. Arturo's was very nice to have there, but Anajo's was horrible and loud. So glad Merus is such a nice replacement. My husband had the grouper & crispy shrimp. It tasted fresh & really good. My filet was just ok, it was surprisingly tough. We were seated in the bar area which I now know to ask to be seated elsewhere because IMO (not my husband's) it was louder (shaken, not stirred) and warmer in that area of the restaurant. The service was great & price as expected, although steak at that price shouldn't be tough. It's not a specialized steak restaurant so I wasn't expecting perfection, but in that case, the price for their steaks should be comparable to Salt Grass. The BEST can't miss item on their menu is the carrot cake. It isn't traditional or pretty, but it was the best tasting carrot cake I've ever had, with the exception of Kenny & Ziggy's traditional carrot cake. It is served warm so the icing is melted. My husband prefers dense thick cream cheesy icing, & I love that too, but this melty warm spicy creamy (no raisin) version was an exceptionally different version that is worth every calorie. read more

Been to this place twice. Once for lunch once for dinner. The avocado bomb is a must have Wow. It's amazing. Had a burger 1st visit for lunch. Everything was excellent. 2nd visit was date night. Great atmosphere, cocktails and wine dinner dessert. I had the filet MR with bake . Spouse had the pork chop with smash. They even brought her out some bake potato fixing. Topped off with carrot cake of course. I must have. Now,I do want to say we both had cocktails they were not that great. Dirty martini and an old fashion. We eat here at least once a week. Exactly like the old J Alexander's on Westheimer Rd. The chili is amazing to start with, we usually get a side of chips to go with it and chopped jalapeños. The Merus salad is sooo good with the honey mustard. Seriously, the honey mustard is so addictive, the best sauce I have ever had. Everything on the menu is executed to a tee and exactly the same every time we go in. I really like the French dip, fried chicken sandwich, and the crab cakes. Highly recommend. Tonight was not a stellar night for Merus. We generally go there once a week. Tonight we ordered our basic regular order which included ribs with fries. The ribs were not up to their normal standards. They were cold, the sauce seemed like it was added after the fact and not baked on and the fries, apparently a supply chain issue, were definitely not up to par. The night manager, Diego, had no solution. The ribs were split between two plates and one plate had completely fatty ribs that were inedible. The only solution he provided, via our sweet server, was a free dessert. We should not have had to pay for that craptastic rib offering. We are good clientele and are regulars. Normally the food is flawless but in addition to the bad ribs, less than stellar fries, one plate came out with fairly cold broccoli. Diego only came up with a free dessert, which we did not want. Not impressed at all with the night manager. Don't expect any kind of resolution from him. Giving 2 stars because food is normally very good but Diego deserves zero stars. He sucks! He didn't give a crap that there was an issue with our dinner. Do better Merus! Diego does not represent you well. We may take our weekly business elsewhere that takes pride in their restaurant. read more

We didn't try Merus Grill until this pandemic but we've gotten curbside for family meals for Mother's Day, Father's Day and for Christmas lunch to drop off for our parents. We've done the prime rib and salmon meals. For take out, even the prime rib is still medium rare! Food is ready when stated and my hubby feels like it's like white gloved service. I have no idea what this restaurant even looks like inside since he always have done the pick up. Lol! But if their take out has been this good, I can only imagine dining-in would be superb. I went here during Covid two times, and we were taken really good care of. I enjoyed the food and it was prepared and presented well. I wasn't wowed but I really did enjoy my experience. Some positives. 1). It's fancy but also causal at the same time. 2) lots of parking with no dumb valet to take your car 20 feet. 3). The food was yummy both times. I met a good friend here for dinner to celebrate his birthday. The service was exceptional and the ambiance lovely. The noise level as the evening progressed made it hard to carry on a conversation as we were seated in the main open dining. We started the evening with a bottles of lovely Chardonnay. Appetizer was the grilled artichoke with remounted sauce which was divine. We both ordered the veggie burger and shared a side of the grilled cauliflower. Cauliflower was hot and perfectly cooked garnished with an ample amount Parmesan cheese. The French fries that came with the burger were straw cut and good. The burger was huge and uniquely created with plentiful amount of beets. I ate half and took the other half home. I actually liked it better the next day! We finished our meal with a slice of key lime pie which was enough for 3 people but so delicious that we devoured every crumb. The French press coffee was perfect with the pie. read more

I never leave reviews but felt this was warranted. We went on Friday, May 6, for my friends birthday with a group of 7 girls. The food was absolutely delicious and the servers were expedient. We sat in the dining area but I love the bar area, as well. Great atmosphere inside (aesthetically great and not loud). I ordered the burger which was phenomenal... and the Avocado appetizer was to die for. Thank you to the manager, Trevor, for being so accommodating. I can't say enough great things. Let me start by saying, you can't help but compare any J. Alexander's-owned restaurant to Houston's. I'm admitting that upfront because that's how I approached this first time out. Very bright, modern restaurant. Nice long bar with a fair number of seats. The main dining area looks to be able to seat any number of parties which is good. I sat at the bar. I started with the soup of the day, every day is different. Sorry to say no day is Mexico City Style. Sunday is potato soup. I liked this version because it's not chunky. Some people like a chunky potato soup, but I grew up with a smoother consistency so that's what I like and I'm sticking to it. The Dragon Salad is a very appealing, fresh salad. It's deceptive since it didn't appear to have much meat (sirloin, I think?), but there is quite a bit there once you start digging around. If you're expecting the meat to be heavily marinated like the Thai Steak Salad at Houston's, you will be disappointed. There was little flavor beyond the meat itself. I did get a hint of something in a couple bites so who knows. This is more an arugula based salad with some noodles, lots of green to it. The dressing carries a little, but not too much, heat. I liked it overall, but can't say I would definitely get it again. Time will tell. Bar staff were friendly, chatty. The traffic was light so I chatted with them more than you would on a weekday lunch or dinner. Overall, it was a nice change of pace. This location has been the kiss of death, but, hopefully, Merus turns that around. read more

Even though obviously it was not hot like eating at the restaurant, i had a 15-20 minute drive, it cut like butter with plasticware. Had a phenomenal experience tonight at Merus Grill. We had originally gone to another restaurant and were seated and felt very uncomfortable- no employees were wearing a mask. We ended up bailing and went to Merus instead and the service was second to none. The food was awesome (it's basically another Houston's) - but truly the service set it apart. If I'm dining out right now in a pandemic- it's a calculated risk but I'm doing it because I need a break. They went out of their way to make us feel taken care of, not in only the traditional sense, but also by all wearing masks, sanitizer was readily available, and a genuinely great positive attitude. Gabriel our server was awesome in providing recomendations (those days you want to try something different and want others to surprise you), we started with 2 wonderful cocktails (one tequila base, the other one with Gin) and as appetizers the calamari (crispy to perfection) and the artichockes (to die for). This place is the absolute BEST!! My wife and I have frequented this establishment a couple of times a week since it's opening in Houston. The food is incredible and the service has been top notch. Fast forward to COVID-19 times and we were able to pickup a meal curbside. It did not disappoint. The process to order, the food, and the service still 5 stars! We had dinner and noticed our dessert was missing. Simple mistake. No big deal. I called and was offered a certificate in the mail to replace it. I was pretty happy. But it gets better. A few minutes later Desmond called me on my cellphone. He apologized and offered to personally drive the dessert to my home in downtown Houston. It was his gesture to make it right. I was completely floored. Who does that? What other restaurant even goes to that level? I assured Desmond it wasn't necessary. But I am left feeling even more loyal. This place is hands down the best service establishment anywhere. We will eat here as often as possible. Count us as the most loyal and favorite customers.
