It's an honor to finally write this review about a restaurant...an establishment...an institute that we have enjoyed for almost 20 years! We were glad to be able to dine in for our lunch meal, as they have a spacious tent situated on the back lot. The courses were delicious. We started with the salmon salad (that's not the name) appetizer, which was wonderful. We could have easily stopped there, but I'm much too much of a foodie for that! I had the prime rib sandwich with fries. Generous portions and VERY tasty. My husband had the special, the trout. Wow! We ordered carrot cake for dessert to take home with us. It's was all very, very well done. I cannot say enough about the staff. Front to back, the people who are part of the J. Alexander family are A-1 in my book. I ordered the swordfish special that came out in two separate, small pieces. It was severely overdone and the "lemon sauce" was flavorless. The cous cous was seasoned with what seemed like a random combination of every spice they had in the kitchen, complete with slivered pieces of bay leaf I had to spit out. It was served with a barely steamed, untrimmed broccoli crown. I spent $35 dollars on this atrocious food, but didn't bother talking to the surly manager as she'd already become argumentative with my dining companion. I am more than happy to give this place a five star review. Not only was the food good but the service matched the food. My BF and I had a reservation for 5:45 we were about 10 minutes late and we were still seated promptly after our arrival. Our server was very polite and full of energy. We started out with the bacon deviled eggs for an appetizer. For an entre I ordered the crab cakes with loaded mash potatoes. The crab cakes were very tender and moist the pairing sauces were good as well. My BF ordered the NY strip with the MAC and cheese. It was a great pair. They complimented each other well. The steak was seasoned well. Our food came out in a decent amount of time. They have a variety of wine and beer options but I am more of a cocktail person. Our waitress got us a cocktail menu and I ordered the red headed Rita. It was nice and strong the pomegranate paired well with the alcohol. S.N my BF steak was over cooked and first and they were very accommodating they made him a new steak at his desired temperature. He originally ordered a steak cooked medium when he got it, it was more well done. One of the mangers were walking around checking on guest he expressed the issue she gladly replaced his steak. Second time at this restaurant. It's a bit hard to find but definitely worth the search. Came here for a birthday lunch with sis and nephew. Our waitress, Kimmy, was awesomely attentive. We ordered a Alex Salad to split for an appetizer, I ordered the Prime Rib with loaded baked potato and sis got the Crispy Chicken Platter with loaded baked potato and cole slaw. Prime Rib was cooked to a beautiful medium rare. Buttery and delicious. Loaded baked potato was stacked high and delicious. The chicken platter was "basically chicken tenders" but way more elevated. You can tell it was actual chicken breast that was cut into strips and battered and fried. The cole slaw was refreshing. It wasn't made with heavy mayo or extra tart or tangy. It was very lightly dressed. It balanced out the heaviness from the rest of the dish. What made this restaurant a five star experience was the customer service from Kimmy and the presentation of the food. We eat with our eyes first and the food was beautifully presented. Kimmy overheard me saying it was my birthday and finished my meal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with chcolate and a candle. It tasted like it was made in house and not store bought. The sour cream too by the way. Overall a great way to spend part of my birthday! read more

Makes me sad they closed this place in Lincoln Park. For price and quality, place deserves a 4.5 star. Stopped in on our way to the burbs. Started off with the queso dip, so good. Arriving for our 6:30pm dinner on Saturday November 11th, we were promptly seated BUT... when I attempted to unwrap my dinner wear I found the napkin to be totally encrusted in food. After receiving new dinner wear, there was no knife included. I was hoping that management personnel would have checked on our service; however, during the one-and one-half dining experience no check ever occurred. What happened to this great place. My friend and I stopped in 2 weeks ago. We were only allowed seating in the bar area. It was so dark at 4pm we couldn't read the menu without our phones. The bar menu was really expensive for what it was. There were probably 5 people working that area and maybe 6 people in there. Unfortunately no one seemed interested in helping us so we left. I've been coming to J. Alexander's for years. Years ago they remodeled and interior is attractive, more upscale. I'm just not a big fan of the large open concept dining. For me, intimate / cozy is always better. It's not my favorite restaurant in the area (I'm sure I'm a minority here based on reviews) - there are so many good restaurants nearby, but the food is average and can be above average at times. I give it 3 - 3.5 thumbs up. I'm fond of their salads and baby back ribs are pretty good. Can't recall ever trying one of their steaks. So can't comment. Menu is pretty standard American fare and really doesn't do much for me. Heard the steaks are good, may try. Slim selection but prices seem on lower end. Again, so many good steakhouses around. My recent visit was on a Sunday afternoon, after shopping nearby JA seemed like a convenient and reasonable choice - they were busy (beautiful sunny day) but they sat us right away without a reservation. Booth requested. Restaurant was bustling & loud. High ceilings and open concept don't make for good acoustics. I also noticed the staff (servers) looked 21 or younger, lol. Just an observation, not judging - has nothing to do with my review or service. Couldn't help but 'server watch'....guess I was just surprised as I've never noticed this in any restaurant before.....moving on... We ordered the fire roasted artichokes for our app, served with Aioli dip. My guy thought these were great...but then again, he's new on the grilled artichoke scene. I felt they were over charred and struggled to get any meat. It got messy. Char on my fingers, face. I must have used 2 napkins at least. I bet I was a sight for sore eyes. Was tired of tugging at the leaves, so went for the heart instead. Some flesh but not much. Didn't detect any flavor but char. Would pass on this next time. We were craving a good burger. My guy had the Old Fashioned Cheeseburger med rare. He really enjoyed. Cooked perfectly. Obviously, I'm more picky than him. I had the Steak burger also med rare - consists of ground beef tenderloin and ribeye. Can't say I noticed a difference in taste with the ribeye and tenderloin. If I didn't know it, I would've thought it was a regular burger. $15 - over priced in my opinion. More bland than tasty. I've had better, but I will say it was cooked a perfect med rare. My cheese was not melted. I didn't make a big deal out of it, but it should have been. They give you a mound of skinny fries and they were good. Not overly fried. Not really of fan of skinny, but I kept eating them...what does that tell you.. My bourbon mule was ok and he enjoyed his beer. Service was OK. Our waiter was friendly & somewhat attentive. He checked on us a couple times, got the feeling he had a lot of tables...Didn't go over specials and pointed to them on menu. Manager came over to ask how everything was - I always appreciate that. More managers should follow his lead. $65 pre tip. Think its a better option for a light lunch (salads) and the outdoor seating and view is a great perk ... Next time I need a burger fix, I'll head to DMK. read more

Our server was the bomb! Chris was so professional yet personable, he made our meal and experience dining there wonderful. The chocolate cake here is incredible, as are their salads, in addition to many other fabulous menu items! I tend to prefer getting a salad here and requesting grilled chicken as an add-on. This is like a VERY expensive Applebees and NOWHERE near the quality of high end steakhouses or the like. I had the Maui steak it was bland overloaded with terriyaki sauce. There are a lot better steakhouses out there. Their lemon martini was mostly overloaded with too much alcohol. They did have good chips and queso, which was a very expensive appetizer. Their prime rib was pretty good as well, but overall I'd say this isn't a "great" place unless you're looking for an Applebees type of quality of food with paying 4X as much for it. read more

We had a table of six. My beef kabobs were a little grisly and the mashed potatoes luke warm and bland. Another complained that his seared tuna was not good. Nobody raved about their food with the exception of dessert. The carrot cake was unanimously Delicious as was the key lime pie, which I typically don't care for. Service was also erratic. Started off well until our entree's arrived then we had to wait forever to get our drinks refilled. Our bill took forever to get and then our waitress disappeared again, unable to divide our bill amongst our 6 credit cards. This place is a gem! I've been told to try many places since I've been to Chicago. No one said "you gotta try J Alexanders" well I'm telling you that you gotta try this place!! The staff was friendly and very organized. Seemed like a well oiled machine where all the parts were properly functioning and performing well. I saw them helping each other hustling to assist customers, keeping vacated seats clean and sanitized. They were also all wearing masks the entire time. No chin diapers. I got there before my family and bartender (Taylor) saw me put the Blackhawks on my YouTube tv and immediately asked if I'd enjoy it on the bigger tv at the bar. The employees there were truly amazing! I saw Kane's 400th, thanks Taylor! Oh yeah, the food! So, the food was as good as the staff. The queso nachos were mouthwatering good. I was not a fan of the chips by themselves, but somehow they disappeared with the entire dip. Fire roasted artichokes were I believe as perfect as one can make an artichoke. I ordered the Filet and it was cooked and paired perfectly with the loaded baked potato. Wife order roasted chicken and was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Kids had burger and Mac and cheese side and they were very good. I tried them both and I would have been happy to receive either as my food. Ok so I would never order carrot cake, I have never ordered a carrot cake.... but I WILL be back for this one. I usually prefer ice cream deserts but this is one of the best cakes I've ever tried. We just got home from J Alexander's. We have a nice dinner and celebrating with our Son and Daughter in law. About 9 we were asked to leave after a 3 hr stay and over $300 bill before tip! Definitely a place to eat again. The service was outstanding, the food was impeccable, and the overall experience was great! I got the grilled rainbow trout and it was amazing. The fish was cooked perfectly, the rice and slaw they service with it was so good. Definitely on the expensive side, but I can't complain with how well my night was eating here. read more
