Solid experience every time. The prices are in line with similar places and the food quality is consistent but the flavors won't blow you away. Service has always been excellent and was again on a recent Wednesday night. Server was attentive and never left a glass empty for more than a few minutes, if that. They have a small, but adequate outdoor seating area that overlooks a retention pond. It's pleasant with ducks and other wildlife swimming around. The main issue with sitting outside at this restaurant is the gnats. Nonstop gnats flying in your eyes, nose, face etc. make for a less than desirable setting. The main menu has been pared down but still has a nice selection of items. They also have daily specials to complement the main items. I had the Roasted Pork Chop and it was really good. The sauce is where the flavor was, but the meat was tender and cooked perfectly. It's a good pork chop, but I think the best is the Berkshire pork chop from Ditka's. The J. Alexander's pork chop comes with a side of mashed potatoes which are...mashed potatoes. Their calamari appetizer is good. They only do rings, but the rings were very crispy and meaty. The portion size is enough for 4-6 people...as long as they're not overly hungry. All in, this is a nice restaurant that won't disappoint. Expect to pay $35-$50 per person for the meal. Bump that to $60+ if you order drinks. There's plenty of parking all around, but the door is a bit hidden and is facing the front parking area of the BMO Harris bank. Dress code is business casual. Shorts are fine to wear as long as they're tasteful. Some guy walked in with shorts and a graphic t-shirt but they didn't seem to care about that. I would suggest polo or higher for guys. Kids are allowed, but they do have very lengthy "dining experience" guidelines on their website. My suggestion: if your kids are going to be going bonkers and running around, screaming, etc., this isn't the place for them. read more

We arrived here pretty much at exactly on time for our 6pm dinner reservation on a Saturday night and I was surprised to find the restaurant already absolutely packed with people waiting for tables. Even with our reservation we had to wait a moment or two for our table. Happily it really wasn't long because that is a huge pet peeve of mine, if a table reservation isn't met. We were seated in a booth towards the back. It was dark but cozy dark. Happily there was enough light to read the menu without the use of my cellphone flashlight. I was in the mood for a cocktail so the waiter brought us a cocktail menu not originally provided by the host. I decided to go with the Pear Martini. It was a really great choice. It wasn't too sweet. It was made beautifully and they didn't skimp on the alcohol. Nice that they bring the extra from the shaker on the side, set on ice to keep cool, I liked it so much much I ordered a second. Between hubby and myself, I was the clear dining winner of the night. Besides loving my cocktail, I ordered the slow roasted prime rib. It was excellent! It was cooked perfectly. Be sure the get the horseradish cream on the side. I love that stuff. I even asked for seconds on it. The mashed potatoes that come on the side were great too, with nice consistency and very buttery. We ordered a side of haricots vert which were cooked well and still crisp tender - also nicely done. Sadly, hubby ordered the Steak Brazzo which he didn't care for. It was supposedly fillet medallions in a Madeira sauce. He thought the meat to be tough which shouldn't be for fillet pieces and he didn't care for the Madeira sauce. He just made a bad choice. Out of the many restaurants in Oak Brook we chose J. Alexander's. It is a bit tucked away off the road so you might not even know it was there. We each had different dishes. I had the filet mignon with baked potato and added on a side salad. The filet was cooked to perfection and I loved the white wine balsamic dressing on the salad. I asked for some herb butter on the side with my filet and highly recommend. My friends got the NY strip. It was a beautiful cut of steak and also cooked to perfection. We will be back. read more

J.Alexander's is a nice place. I enjoyed my time here with my family. The restaurant was clean and servers were great. They were constantly helping us and making sure we were enjoying our food. My sisters enjoyed there food but I didn't really care for my meal. The veggie burger wasn't for me. There veggie burger was very different from the ones I have had at other restaurants. There veggie burger did seem very fresh. Maybe that's saying more about the other restaurants than J. Alexander's... but I just didn't like the texture of it... it was very mushy and I also dislike that it was bursting with beets. Really that's the only thing I could taste. First time coming here. We were super super hungry. Ordered a lemon cod, and a cheese burger with a variety of sides. See pictures which look appetizing. Don't be fooled though. Cod was charred and had no lemon flavoring. Mac and cheese had no flavor, mashed potatoes were watery and looked like powder potatoes My burger was cooked medium so good job on that, however it was bland and no flavor, and the bun was disgusting it's like it was purchased at Walmart those basic buns that go flat after a bite. Only good thing and it's surprising, but their coleslaw and the wild rice side as well as their couscous were delicious. Sad that their sides are better than their entrees. *From other reviewers this is a more expensive TGIF's/Applebee's... how sad because the look inside is nice just not worth the money spent. read more

September 30, 2023, my wife and I made a reservation to celebrate our 51 year anniversary. Everything was fine until we were wrapping up. then the waiter brought us a sip of champagne, I really mean a sip.at the same time another gentleman brought us chocolate cake and ice cream. the gentleman said to us congratulations. I was invited to join a group of meat eaters. I am a vegetarian and needless to say, I was limited to salad. I asked if,the veggie burger was grilled on the same grill as the meat and they said, "yes." What is the point of offering a veggie burger if it's going to get contaminated by meat. If you want a good burger or other traditional American food, you can count on J.Alexander's for high quality. I'd say about 80% of all the dishes are top notch, but there are a few "meh" ones. The fish tacos are one of them. I'd say stick to the red meats like steaks when coming here. Don't expect your lunch to be quick. J. Alexander's is popular, and the focus on high quality service and food, not speed. It will take you about an hour for lunch, so don't expect to rush through it. The service can be described as similar to a steak house: waiters and waitresses dressed nicely in black, coming by your table fairly frequently to check on you. They are polite, and if you have a problem with something, they work to accommodate you. One last thing to mention is that it's excellent for a place if you want a martini or other alcoholic beverage with your meal. They have a full bar with a couple top quality bourbons too. I started to eat at J. Alexander's back in the day (1981), I was a kid!! What a great new restaurant it was in the Oakbrook area. The open kitchen concept was so new and the brick and beam interior was cutting edge for its design. The bar area was inviting with wine selections on chalk boards. The stars of their menu were an outstanding house salad which was accompanied by a croissant which had a sweet glaze and an incredible grilled smoked loin pork chop, served with a baked sweet potato with Maple butter. This place was it, and the waits were long, but worth it. It's 39 years later. Time passes, no more croissants, the pork chop is a memory. When you walk in now something is missing. When we sat down we talked about it and noticed that the huge flower arrangements were not there. The place is almost spartan in appearance. The soft edge that those little touches gave are gone. We started off with a good Old Fashion. Grilled artichokes seams to be on everybody's menu now. The do a acceptable job of char grilling them and serving them with a nice green sauce. For lunch we had, French dip sandwich, steak burger and chicken strips. The dishes all came with shoestring fries. The winner was the French dip. I thought the burger was okay and if you want great chicken strips go to Pilot Pete's in Roselle. Sometimes you just can't go back! With all of the choices we have today, I am gonna put J. Unexpectedly such a great place for a burger. This place has been around for over 20 years and has changed the menu many times. I miss the double cut pork chop they used to have, but now such a great place to grab a quick burger. They have a steakburger on the menu that is ground tenderloin and ribeye that is absolutely awesome. The patty is freshly ground and packed and extremely juicy. Added to the burger is tillamook cheddar, grilled onions, and a special sauce similar to thousand island only better. For $16 it includes fries and is going to be probably one of the better burgers you can have in the area. If you want an appetizer, grab the grilled artichoke that comes with a nice aioli for dipping. Although their menu has changed over the years, it's still a great place to grab a quick bite to eat. Drinks are fantastic and service was very friendly. You will love the burger on top of some of the other options. I will be back for that. As for the food I'll pass. I give 4 stars because the waiter was so sweet but not 5 stars because they ran out of steak. Came here on Weds evening because I had bought gift cards from Costco (SPB Hospitality group) and can be used at any of the restaurants included in their group. I have ordered takeout a couple months ago from this same restaurant with the same gift cards, so I was excited to dine in this time. Service was prompt, attentive and sweet. Food was tasty. The salad I ordered was flavorful but had way too much dressing. When it was time to come for the bill, I informed the waiter I would like to use my gift cards to pay. The waiter went and spoke to managers and told me that the gift cards cannot be used. I was confused why I was unable to use their company's gift cards at one of the restaurants listed. And how was I able to order take out in October using the same gift cards? I was upset because I only went to this restaurant to use the gift cards I had bought. I paid with my credit card and we left the restaurant upset and confused. I proceeded to call the restaurant the next day, asking to speak to the manager for some clarification. One of the managers said the manager that had information about the gift cards was in a meeting and will call me back when she is done. I was extremely disappointed when I never received a call back yesterday and if I don't get a call back today, then I'll have to call again. Overall, not sure where their miscommunication is but not accepting the gift cards for their own hospitality group when it specifically says online that it can be used at any of their locations is ridiculous. Especially when I would've used my money to buy other gift cards. The only reason I even dined in was because of these gift cards and then I ended up having to pay with my credit card and the gift cards are still unused. Came for a work related dinner and the waitress was just lost. I think she left her smile at home as well her knowledge of the menu and stared at us. The funny thing was she would slide our entrees and appetizers on the table which was a first because normally a waitress would place your plate in front of you and one of my coworkers could only consume soup due to her dietary restrictions and you would think she would suggest maybe some bread or crackers??? It had been awhile since I've been here but my siblings raves about their prime rib and their steaks. We started out with the calamari which was amazing and perfect since we had been starving and we went in for a late lunch at 2 pm. My sister and I ordered the prime rib and both were cooked to perfection. It came with mashed potatoes, Au jus and horseradish sauce. With the right ambience and a bustling crowd, J. Alexander's Restaurant never disappoints. Its dark wood decor, low lighting and intimate seating makes for a nice comfortable space. The acoustics in the place are a tad loud; this is probably the largest drawback, especially if you are here for a business lunch/dinner or a romantic getaway. However, the place has a nice feel to it with music piped in the background and servers moving about hurriedly. I have come to this establishment on several occasions for lunch rarely having the opportunity to have dinner. So I was excited to have the opportunity to take my wife there to experience a meal. Typically I order a bacon cheeseburger, medium well, without the trimmings and a side of honey mustard. It comes with a mountain of fries (too much for a mere mortal to consume). This time I chose to be adventurous. I ordered the Maui steak, medium with a loaded baked potato sans sour cream. For an appetizer we had the spinach queso dip with pico de gallo and chips. I am not a fan of spinach dips. However, this dip was warm and tasty. The spinach was not overwhelming but you knew it was there. Add the pico de gallo and it was quite the combination. It was a nice blend of acid from the tomatoes with the slight bitterness of the spinach. I almost filled up with that alone! The steak arrived seared to perfection. The Hawaiian style marinade that they used to season it was a combination of "pineapple sweet" and other exotic spices. I found it quite tasty yet a tad overwhelming. I could have used some bread to break up the sweetness. The baked potato was 16oz and chocked with flavor. There was an Idaho spud sweetness to it that I truly appreciated it. The skin was slightly salted, which contrasted nicely with the saltiness of the butter and bacon bits. The meal, however, was too sweet for me although quite delicious. Next time instead of ordering the baked potatoes I will have to have something more pallet calming like broccoli spears or asparagus. For dessert I ordered their famous carrot cake. Now, I am not a fan of cake. As a matter of fact, I try to avoid eating cake as much as possible. However, their carrot cake is unlike anything I have ever tasted. It is soft and delectable, pleasing with every bite. The sweetness of the cake is only matched by the delightful icing placed on top of it. Served warm, the cake literally melts in your mouth. Really. Alone it is worth the visit to this establishment. J. Alexander's Restaurant is one of my favorite restaurants. The last time I came for great prime rib was a decade ago. I guess the quality this time was not up to my par. The whole week I waited to come here and finally I got my chance to try my favorite again. All I can say is the service is impeccable, the rest including the praised steak is or was just ok. Maybe my taste buds changed but the entire 18oz prime rib ($35) was too salty, I had added a Alex salad and even that was mediocre.
