This review is for dinner at the bar in February 2022. preamble: My wife and I are big fans of J. Alexander's. We were roadtripping from DC to Chicago and picked Toledo as our overnight just because they have a J. Alexander's. Yeah, we're that devoted to this place. service: Bar service is one of the hallmarks that distinguish J. Alexander's and this outpost was no exception. Lots of barstaff and managers were present. This is a well-run place. bar: My Bulleit Rye Manhattan ($10.50) and my wife's Absolut Cosmo ($14) were expertly crafted, large, and surprisingly affordable. I also drank a Rhinegeist IPA and thought it a great beer. food: We are stuck in our ways and frequently order the same thing. My wife had their chicken fingers with coleslaw and orzo/wild rice. I had their French Dip and fries. Both are not to be missed. details: No masks required and no vaccination check as of February 2022. Same layout as some other J. Alexander's. Large bar to the right when you walk in. Exhibition kitchen straight ahead. Reservations might be a good idea? As a Vegetarian who's allergic to meat it's really hard to find good restaurants i usually just stick to fries, i came here with mild hope as it was highly rated in the vegetarian friendly restaurants list, it was amazing our server Emma was a savior so personal funny and kind, because i'm allergic i can't eat meat so instead of paying for overpriced pasta she tried to take the price off for us! Normally not a fan of chain restaurants. This place always delivers in quality and taste. The Alex salad is easily one of the best side salads in the city, while the Vegetarian Burger is perhaps the BEST I've ever eaten in the country. Wasn't aware my steak came with a side, everyone else was asked what side they wanted and since my filet didn't state anything on the menu and the server didn't ask me, I was surprised when a loaded potato came out. I had a fantastic lunch today - grilled salmon with orzo salad. Salmon was cooked perfectly (medium well) and was seasoned just right. The orzo salad was served cold and had a wonderful blend of veggies, dried cranberries and raisins. Service was a bit slow and the restaurant had a funny stale smell, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. read more

The best crispy chicken tender basket in all of Toledo. Hand battered and comes with house made bbq and honey mustard. Also, their shoe string fries also. Food is always amazing, but usually slow. Service is always nice. Be careful, because food is EXPENSIVE

The food is consistently tasty. The service is not. Over the last several visits, we have had trouble getting our servers attention to order, get our drinks, get drinks refills,, get our checks. I think during our recent visits this is likely due to Covid related staffing shortages. read more

While waiting in the restaurant can be a bit stressful, specially given it's one of the nicer restaurants in Toledo. The hostesses are always friendly & welcoming. It's enjoyable watching the kitchen, & always smells amazing. Some areas of the restaurant I believe could use variations in lighting but that's more of a corporate tip than a yelp review LOL. I think I've eaten everything on the menu at least once, from the BBQ ribs, to the fish tacos, to the crab cakes (which for me unfortunately are too spicy, which is a bummer) but the one time I got it & it was too hot for me to eat, I didn't even complain & they comped it for me. It's always a rare & pleasant surprise anymore when a restaurant does something gratuitous, given how horrible service has been since covid. I've never been disappointed by the food nor the cleanliness. I'm always down for J Alexander's. Lastly, as simple as it is, the Alex salad is something both my husband & I look forward to & even have gotten to go just because we're craving it with that dressing. Yum. Excited to have dinner here for our anniversary. While waiting to be seated we saw a lot of ToGo orders going out. We should have left then. We were seated soon after arriving ( we had an 6:15 reservation)and the server took our drink order. She came back to say they were out of Coors light for my husband. Ok, another brand then. She came back 2 more times to say she was waiting on our drinks from the bar. The second time she took our food order. Then she headed up to the higher teir to take another tables order. Finally our drinks come. A mojito is not made of rum, mint and 2 nasty lemons dropped in. Where was the limes? Lime juice and refreshing sparkling water? Then we waited. And waited. I asked our server to check on our food. when she came back she got snippy. She said it takes longer to cook a filet. I said ok, but well over a half an hour? She got defensive ... Our reservation was at 6:15 our food was served at 7:10. with much attitude. (Steaks were undercooked and potatoes weren't warm enough to melt butter.) She would only speak to my husband, brought him a beer on the house, only cleared his plates. This said, we won't be back. This isn't the first restaurant we have been to where we sat and waited for our food while watching one ToGo order after another be picked up. Either you are a carryout restaurant or a dine in restaurant. The in house customers suffer when you have both. read more

My favorite Restaurant. I love the food. The service. And the atmosphere there is amazing.

Lunch with sisterrrrrrrs! When you click "make a reservation" on yelp app, it will take you to open table page and making reservation was easy. I was actually surprised how busy they were on Sunday afternoon. When I arrived 10 mins before reservation time, they had our table ready and I waited for my sisters (actually friends but we are like sisters) to arrive. Server was very friendly and attentive. We ended up staying there for two and a half hours over drinks and lunch, never felt rushed despite of how busy they were. Crab cake dinner I had was very good, it was $32 but when you eat, price range makes sense as they were very meaty. Lots of crab meat in it, I really enjoyed my meal there. If you order martini, they bring extra in a nice container, so it's easy to drink as they don't fill up the glass. Really classy ambiance, good service, good food, great conversation, I really enjoyed afternoon there. read more

THIS, my friends, is a PROPER crab cake. I am visiting from NC and have had many a "crab cake" but this one is not playing around & worth every penny!! Bartenders have always been great - even during covid. Everyone has been respectful and take care to social distance. Drinks have been fantastic. Food is always on point. Now I'm not usually one to frequent or love chain restaurants but J. Alexander's is one of the few exceptions. That food is always amazing and the service is some of the best around. December 17th. Husband and I ..were in for an early dinner celebration. Our server Ashley witch we found out here name at the end of our meal. Very disappointed in her service. She never introduced herself. Never asked is this your first dining experience here. She did ask what would like to drink . Never suggested any of the special of the day, Never smile , Never seem to care what we wanted. Very robotic. During the meal she never came back to the table to ask if we would like another drink. Never asked if we would like dessert. Brought the bill to table before we ask for it. Felt very rushed. When customers come in for a pleasant dinner experience ..Then pay a big dinner bill they want the evening to be a wonderful time. I felt we were rob of the experience. Very disappointing. read more

A local recommended this place as a deviation from the fast food life I had been living while doing business in the area. 1) They don't take orders to go via phone...bummmer. SO I had to go seat there and wait. Disclaimer: All my meals were to go. Kale Salad- Loved it. Most may think you can't go wrong with a kale salad. Yes you can. While it's mad in different ways by each chef, this one was simple but the added condiments (nuts, cheese..etc) made it delish. I don't think it was that expensive because it was a small portion. I wished the portion was bigger. Steak Rolls- Yummers for my tummy. However it came with 2 sauces..I found both to be too salty for my palate. I would rather just dip them in, dare I say it, Ketchup. But alas, there was no ketchup in sight so I ate them plain and they were still pretty darn good. Grilled Salmon (side of broccoli)- Those were some huge broccoli sides. I wish I had more broccoli though. I am a broc girl! Salmon was okay. I don't remember much of it. It wasn't bad but just average. Overall I think the good here is great. Good ambience as well. The place was filled when I came and if I lived in area I am sure I would make it a staple. read more

Friend Rick S brought me here tonight for really excellent foods we have been experiencing. Key Lime pie is one of my best ever. A shrimp app same. Waiting for 2 different steak options. Rick had prime rib and he says is good but not great. My rare Filet...one of my best ever! Thick cut and almost 2" to cut into. Excellent salt seasoning and nice size portion. Nice larger baked potato with butter and bacon. No problem getting most of everything cleaned up! Overall a great food experience here. Sure want to return. read more

You know when you are craving a steak, you want to walk away completely satisfied. Unfortunately, this was one of those times I walked away and actually asked myself "what in the world did I just eat?" For starters, service was spot on. As soon as I sat down at the bar last night (approx 915p) I was immediately greeted and drink order was taken. I ordered the Steak Maui, house salad, and a loaded baked potato. The salad came out in less than three minutes. Perfect... I was starving. The steak and potato cane out soon thereafter. This is where my disappointment set in. If you pay ~$40 for a steak, you have a certain level of expectation. Pretty good quality, a pretty decent cut, and cooked to your liking. Well... the quality and cut on this one didn't live up to my expectations. This was like I was eating a manufactured ribeye with zero marbling in it. Did I eat it, yes! I was extra hungry because I've been traveling all day. Being that the steak was the centerpiece of meal, I would have to say I walked out the restaurant feeling like I didn't get a quality meal relative to what paid for it. I stopped in around 745P on a Tuesday and I was surprised to see how dead the place was. I didn't go to the hotel after getting off from work so I was still in my high visibility clothes. I grabbed a seat at the bar and got a couple looks. It's not formal but it is a nicer atmosphere so I definitely stood out in a bright yellow-green shirt. Anyways, I'm trying to eat lite so the ahi tuna salad caught my eye. When I got down to the bottom of the menu I noticed they had couscous which doesn't seem like a common item so I ordered a side of that as well. The couscous came out first. It was pretty good. It must be cooked in some kind of chicken broth or stock because it has a pretty strong flavor. I don't mean that in a bad way but couscous can be bland if it's not done right and this has good flavor. The bartender was a little worried that the salad didn't come out at the same time. I let her I know wasn't in a hurry but she knew something was up. I didn't wait long but the salad came out 5 or 10 min later. I'm not a big fan of cilantro so I ordered the ahi tuna salad with the white wine vinaigrette instead of the cilantro vinaigrette. When the dish came out, the tuna was off to the side and not on top of the salad. The plate was garnished with wasabi and ginger. There wasn't anything wrong with the presentation, I just pictured tuna on a bed of greens in a bowl. After a couple bites I even asked the bartender how people typically eat the dish. She said she cuts up the tuna and mixes it in with the salad. She also said some people eat either the salad or the tuna first and then eat the other. I alternated bites. ‍ The portion seemed kind of small so I asked and she said it's a 4 oz portion of tuna. She also said the tuna dinner is an 8 oz portion. I'm trying to eat better so the portion size worked out well for me but it's something to keep in mind if you're hungry. read more

Although, in general, I don't spend too much time occupying Wall Street, I usually try to avoid expensive, large-chain, corporate-type restaurants, and that's exactly what J Alexander's is. HOWEVER, other than the fact that this place has about as much character as the McDonald's accross the street, AND, other than the fact that there are much better local offerings, I can't find much fault with J Alexander's. We've always gotten good food and good service, in a nice-enough atmosphere. My wife believes JA's has the best prime rib in the city. (Personally, I prefer Angelo's Northwood Villa, for prime rib). Intermittently, they do seem to have a problem getting my steak cooked right. This last time in, my filet was over cooked (well done is still edible, but "medium well" means MEDIUM WELL, dammit!) The manager, however, made things right... She offered to bring me another steak. I declined. She then offered to pay for it. Again, l declined. She then offered to buy us dessert and another round of drinks. I accepted! If you're like me, you prefer to buy (and eat) local. But if you don't mind "eating corporate," once in a while, J Alexander's is a pretty decent place. read more

Had the "Steak Maui" tasted like steak teriyaki, "smashed potatoes" weren't that great, just mashed potatoes with dried chives on the top. I ordered a salad and I never received it. Portions were ridiculously small especially for the price. Had the "steak roll" appetizer. Tasted like a hamburger helper smoothie stuffed in a egg roll. Won't be back. I have been so happy that this restaurant came to Toledo many years ago. Back then it seemed so high end restaurant. Now, it has become a little less formal. I love the rattle snake pasta and their prime rib is always perfect. The service is also great. read more
