Paul came over to give us a quote for tuck pointing and rebuilding a stone wall in the front of my house. It was about what I expected. He was a real down to earth guy. I liked him a lot. J&B Masonry, Pawel Fit, did major work on our 100 year old condo. We had three chimmeys rebuilt, a turret rebuilt, replacement of over 40 lintels, parapet rebuilt, and major tuckpointing. We also had the limestone cleaned. We interviewed several contractors who had great sales pitches, glossy brochures and high prices. J&B was reasonably priced, explained their process, how they would do the work, etc. and they kept their word. We had scaffolding all over the building front but they were very safe and careful workers and cleaned up after the job. They were very careful with the color of the mortar and matched the building very well; in fact, they mixed three different colors mortar to make sure they got it right. They were very skilled and their work is meticulous. These people know their business; they are good craftsmen and workers. Everyone is very polite and they are just really nice people to work with. There are general contractors who try to do masonry work but this firm is a licensed masonry company and they are trained and the real thing. I rarely write reviews on Yelp but this is one of better companies as a Condo President that I have worked with. They come in on budget and they deliver an excellent quality product!! read more

I am so happy that I called J&P Masonry to look at my chimney. Pawel came out to inspect and we agreed that if possible he would repair the chimney rather than replace it. When his crew came to do the work they discovered that the old chimney was beyond repair. Rather than just telling me what they had found they took several pictures and showed me how bad it was. We agreed on a new price and they replaced the entire chimney the same day. They were polite and very efficient. At my request they removed an old antenna that had been on the roof and disposed of it for me. When they were finished they cleaned up and left my house, yard and gangway neater than when they arrived. I contacted Pawel to come out and do some tuck-pointing near the chimneys of our building as the mortar was crumbling out. Additionally, I wanted him to look at some water coming into the unit at the tops of a couple of window frames. He promptly responded to my initial inquiry and we set up a time for him to come look at the issues. Showed up on time, gave his thoughts on both projects, and provided the estimate the next day. The J&P estimate was better than or in line with the other estimates we received from a couple other masonry contractors, but Pawel seemed to know his stuff and was very professional (great reviews across all sites too!). When it came time for the work to start, his team did a great job. The work was split between two different days because of some weather, but I appreciated them not ripping a hole in my wall to fix the flashing above the windows during the rain! When they did open up the exterior wall to examine the source of the water coming into the unit above the windows, his team took pictures and explained what was wrong with the original construction, and how it was going to be fixed. They even sent me some photos halfway through the project after the flashing was repaired but before the bricks went up. The work was finished in a reasonable amount of time, and his crew was professional and courteous. They made sure the clean up any debris/dirt/garbage (even the mortar chunks that found their way onto our neighbor's lot). Pawel came by later to make sure I was satisfied before collecting payment. I had Pawel and his crew repair our facade which had step cracks around several windows. The home is in a historic district and we had to preserve the existing bricks. They replaced several lintels and fixed the step cracks. They also did some tuckpointing and corrected a leaning part of the brick facade on the top of the house. This was a challenging job given the mandate to only use existing brick. I was pretty demanding about how I wanted it to look and Pawel patiently indulged me until the result was very good and I was satisfied. Five stars for honest contractors. I requested tuck pointing and sealing an exterior wall of my house and from pics pawel was able to tell me the bricks need to be replaced and sealing won't work. He instead advised me to just paint it again. Not my aesthetic preference but a lot cheaper than replacing a whole brick facade. Pawel and his team did an awesome job fixing a few issues in my house. I found him to be very honest and great to work with from the very beginning and a pleasure to work with. Before selecting a contractor I met with several individuals who were OK when assessing the work to be done but either provided ridiculous quotes, were unresponsive when I had questions about the materials that would be used or how the work would be performed, or just pushed for work that really didn't need to be made. Pawel seemed very honest about what had to be done immediately vs. what could wait a little. He also answered about one thousand questions that I had about how he would do the work and was sensitive to the fact that I just really wanted to understand his approach. His team did a good job on the repairs, which ranged from replacing a downspout, replacing old bricks and doing tuckpointing, sealing, adding flushing in several windows, etc. He also did some follow up work to address some leaks, and while there was an additional cost associated with this, it was reasonable. Last he followed up multiple times to see how if we had experienced any issues and give specifics on the work he had done. I really enjoyed working with Pawel and will work with him in the future to address any masonry issues I have. Pawel is a class act! In June, we asked for a quote through a 3rd party to have our brick home tuckpointed. J&P was one of 3 companies who called us to set up an appointment. Pawel was the only one who came when he committed to coming (1 just plain no-showed, and the other kept pushing it back before we finally said no thanks). Pawel did a quick assessment of the house, helped us determine the root cause of our water intrusion (which is why we needed the tuckpointing in the first place), and recommended action that would fix our problem. He offered a job that would meet our needs and our budget, and was able to put us on the schedule for work in about a week. His guys came on time, were courteous and clean, and did a great job with the tuckpointing. What's even better...we JUST had the inside walls replaced on the back rooms of the house (up and down). After taking the walls down, we saw that on the inner layer of brick (couldn't be seen from the outside of the house) there was a brick-sized gap under one of the windows. We could see straight to the concrete window sill with the walls taken down!! =( We called Pawel again and asked him to come replace the brick on the inside of the house, and of course offered to pay, as this was not related to the tuckpointing job they did in June. His guys came after-hours the following business day, and did the job with no charge. Don't even bother calling any of the other Chicago masonry guys. Seriously. These guys are the best! read more

Pawel from J&P was great! Initially they came out to inspect on the same day as I called. In addition to two sides of my ouse needing tuckpointing, I had a gap in the corner of my bricks all the way through down to the drywall. Horrifying! It was the beginning of winter and they didn't ave much time to do repairs before it froze outside. Of course it started snowing the day after they finished about half of the work. A couple of weeks later it was unseasonably warm out, and they showed up immediately to finish the job--I was totally impressed with how fast they worked, and the amount of work they accomplished. The quote was totally reasonable, in line with other companies I had worked with before. The quality of their work was awesome and apparent to me, who doesn't know a ton about tuckpointing and masrony, but has worked with other, less-clean workers in the past.
