Great place! Went in as a group of 4, made a reservation, and it was extremely pleasant. The manager welcomed us in as if we were regulars but we were in from out of town. To start, the have bread that is placed at the table, but it's cheesy bread... secondly one of us got the gumbo, and I can honestly say it was the best cup I've ever had. The lobster risotto... that shit fucking smacks. You just gotta get it. I ordered the steak with a crab cake on top and it was perfect. Wine was great and reasonably priced. It felt like we were at a place where each plate is around $80. But we were at a place with great food and staff, for about $40 per plate. read more

My wife and I were walking around downtown, pulled up yelp and found this place. We almost didn't come as I misread the sign, I thought it said strippers. It actually says supper. My mind played a Freudian trick on me as next door there is a exotic dance club. I'm glad we checked yelp to find out it's a restaurant. The appetizers we got were amazing. Have not been in Minneapolis for 20 years. Driving around to find a place to eat downtown is always painful specially when we are talking about parking. I came across JD Hoyt's on a very lucky traffic light that turned red. Place is for all tastes and weather. You can choose in between the inside bar or outside seating. The most important is the food. Not your regular predictable Mortons or any other steakhouse chain. Staff is great and the only thing they could improve is their appetizer list. What a treat! We've lived in Downtown Minneapolis for 20+ years, yet only now have we taken the maiden voyage to J.D.Hoyt's. It lives up to its history; generous portions, a varied menu, fresh seafood and a great supper cub vibe. Our server Anne was attentive, and every server was husting on the night we visited. We each started with soup; seafood gumbo for me, crawfish etoufee for The Hubster. The garlic cheese bread that lands at the table is delish and we were sorely tempted to pack some for later consumption (not wanting to spoil dinner completely). The Hubster ordered and enjoyed the scallops; grilled to perfection. I had the pork chop, which was huge. How does anyone eat two of these?? We closed the tab with grilled bananas; a bit decadent and totally worth the splurge. Along with drinks, I didn't think that the bill was too bad. Considering how well we feasted, it was a bargain! I've been here many times, and I love this place. The Relish Tray is almost a must. It's a really nice variety of "munchies" that isn't heavy and won't kill your appetite for dinner. It's a veggie tray with dips, but also has some pickled items, yogurt, cold salads, etc. It's really just a great start for a table to share. Another appetizer worth mentioning is the buddy bowl. This cajun treat is masterful. Dirty rice, red beans, a tasty sauce that's not too spicy (most Minnesotans have no issues with the spice level), topped with a seafood of your choice... it's unreal. HOWEVER -- it's heavy! If you're not really hungry, grab this, eat some, but be careful not to destroy your appetite before dinner. Speaking of dinner: The steaks here are insanely good. I'll put them on par with other supreme steak houses in the twin cities, like Manny's, Murray's, and others. The porterhouse has a nice piece of filet, that's not small. However, as we're talking about the steaks, the real treat here are the pork chops. You always get two. Always. Take one home for the next day if you aren't eating both. But when they are this good, and the second one is less than $5 (not a typo), you get it. I love the cajun seasoning on these, but the open fire is really what gives them their taste. The little bits of char, with the perfectly cooked, juicy meat... Mmmmmm.... Other finicky eaters with me have tried the swordfish, the catfish, and have ordered them both again. The family style potato dishes are all good, specifically both the hash browns and the cajun hash browns. But don't miss the red beans and dirty rice (or just the dirty rice). Not many place offer these little cajun flares, so take advantage of them when you're at JD Hoyt's. read more

I often forget about how classy this joint is. I've been by here for drinks and dinner a few times before, and I always have a great time. Then somehow, I forget about the whole experience until I happen back here on a whim about 6 months later. JD Hoyt's really seems to really know the meaning of the word service. During dinner tonight, the manager of the restaurant stopped by a couple of times just to make sure we were having a good time, and the bartender was top notch. I had a prime rib sandwich tonight, which was amazing! I've also had great steak and chicken here before. I'd say that the prime rib sandwich was definitely the best thing I've had in a long time (and definitely the best thing I've had at JD Hoyt's.) If you are one to enjoy a supper club every now and then, you should add this place to your rotation. Definitely one of the best in Minneapolis. read more

I have been to JD Hoyt's many times and been pleased with the atmosphere, food, etc. I took a group of people there a couple weeks ago on a Saturday however, and had a horrible experience. The hostess seated us promptly per our reservation as they were not busy, but after 15mins I had to go ask for our server. After the orders were taken, we had two items come back undercooked and one overcooked. We let the server know and the undercooked items were taken back, but then they both came back over cooked and one item was burned. I was disappointed with the overall experience, disappointed that two couples that came for the first time spent over $100 each and had a bad experience, and disappointed that our server didn't acknowledge anything. Given we were out for the evening with friends I did not make a big deal about the issues, but I followed up the next day. I explained the scenario the next day over the phone, I was told someone would call me back to address and nothing ever happened. A comp drink from the server the night of the bad experience to the people impacted or a $25 gift card for the two couples when I addresses would have gone a long way. read more

Three words: Cajun pork chops. The old JD Hoyts had a more legit feel to it. The current "cleaned up" version is less authentic. The prices need to come down a bit to be more in line with the 'hood they are in (the joint next door is not PG-13) and the quality is pretty good, but if you really want to be a roadhouse, grunge it up a bit more...just like you had it before you "improved" the joint. read more

My boyfriend and I went on a Wednesday evening around 7pm. We were seated promptly & had a server at our table within 5 minutes. The restaurant itself is a little old-looking & cramped, but that's part of the charm and legitimacy to the place. I thought the wine list was great. I ordered the vegetarian Cajun pasta & my boyfriend ordered an 8 oz. filet done medium. I thought my pasta was good, nothing special, but certainly good. My boyfriend's steak arrived rare & had to be sent back. Normally I hate hassling restaurant staff (being a server myself), but it was red all the way through and a far cry from medium. I went to J.D. Hoyt's for the first time for a Christmas party. We reserved the back room since there were 15 of us and we tend to get a little loud. When we arrived they seated us right away even though the whole group was not there. We had the Dirty Rice and their Garlic Cheese Toast as appetizers. Both were phenomenal! I could have ate a whole basket of the toast. I may or may not have ordered my own basket. For dinner I had the Charcoal Grilled Halibut with Cajun Seasoning , it was AMAZING! I love fish and this is probably some of the best fish that I have ever had at a restaurant. It wasn't bland or over seasoned, it was just right. Everyone enjoyed their food. We had some wine. Of course we had wine! They have a decent wine and drink menu, but they have a corkage fee of $25. A few members of our group knew that beforehand and they brought a few bottles of wine. It will save you a little money, depending on the wine and how much you plan to drink. The service was the best service I have ever had. Hands down, she was awesome! She was patient with our loud, obnoxious and A.D.D. group and she even joked around with us. She never rushed us to leave the back room, even though we were there from 4:30 pm to 11:00 pm. The charcoal grilled shrimp is way too salty, I can even tease the salty flavor in my throat the second day. The shrimp is over cooked and hard to chew. Also entrees are served with asparagus but we weren't informed that they are extra $2 dollars. We usually just give 20% tips for dinners, we did the same thing here, but found when I selected 20% on their mobile POS it charged 20% after tax, that is about 23% before tax. After a pedal pub, I popped my head in to see if they would allow eleven sweaty people in for an early dinner. The host was very cool and had no issues getting us seated even though we were a little under dressed. The wonderful aromatic smell of hickory easily masked the smell of of the group I was with. I ordered the lobster tacos and they were very good! Another person in the group was gracious enough to share a crab cake and that was excellent. Everyone In the group loved their food. I can't believe I was unaware of this place. Maybe that's because I've driven past it a million times but it's overshadowed by the garish pink monstrosity DeJa Vu. First off, they have complimentary valet parking. Next, we were promptly greeted and seated by a very gracious host. Our waitress, Sonny was darling and the perfect server. She knew exactly when to check in on us but was not overbearing. She answered all our questions and knew the menu well. She was charming with my somewhat annoying family of eight. The food was top notch. I had lobster tacos that still leave my mouth watering. My Fiance' had the swordfish special with asparagus and tomato risotto and he's still talking about it. There were sweet potato fries with cinnamon and sugar! The portions were generous. My entire family was pleased with their meals, but I think what made the experience really spectacular was the service, even the manager checked in on us at one point. It is so refreshing to be so attended to and feel so appreciated. Though this was a great place to dine with my family, the atmosphere was such that it would make a classy (but not trying too hard) date place or even a low-key girl's night. Had an A-OK night here tonight with some clients. The Great: + The house special, the Pork Chops (x2) were pretty fantastic. This was so much food and at $25 was a great value. The smokey flavor and seasonings were spot on. + A good selection of draft beer. I was glad to see Bell's and Surly. + Old-school atmosphere, yet clean and not shabby. The Average: o The wait staff was decent, but she didn't seem that excited about the food. o The relish plate was fairly boring. I was somehow expecting more, but it ended up being a run-of-the-mill veggie tray. The Poor: - The Potatoes. The hashbrowns were oily, and only crisp at the very edges. Not a fan. The Mike's Potatoes (Au Gratin) were slathered in cheese yet surprisingly mundane. Both were clear misses. If I could give a 3.5 star rating I would, but if I had to choose a 3 or a 4, I go with a 3. Terrible, charcoal & overpriced. I went there with family in early 2013 & still remember my awful experience. It was an early dinner & we were the ONLY people in the place but it took 1 1/2 hrs to get our food. I see all of these other great reviews & wonder how ours could be such the opposite. I never mind paying a bit for prime rib if it's good, however, these were over-charred & horrible. My boyfriend got medium, I got rare. They both came out completely black - neither were edible. When I said something, the server took it back & returned with it explaining to me the cooks said that's the way it comes & deal w/it. It's cooked the day before & to reheat it they put it on a hot grill & to keep it rear or medium they have to cook it fast & it gets burnt. Um, what? What have you been doing for more than a hour? And no, food should not have a cm of charcoal on the outside of it. They didn't offer or give me any other solution. We ended up paying for food we couldn't eat & left hungry. Rest of the family's meal wasn't much better. At least the server was nice & he did seem embarrassed. We will never be back & I warn everyone against this place. read more

When I stepped into the front enterance and saw the bar I felt like I was brought back to the sitcom Cheers! The show's theme song: "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" came to mind. My bf and I asked for a patio seat, as it was a nice night out. The view of downtown from the patio was lovely! We were promptly introduced to our server Jodi. She alone made the night special for us, she had a great outgoing attitutde to her. The serving staff, at least outside, appeared to all be having a good time and smiling. She sold my bf on the pork chops and I ordered the scallops. Both dishes were excellent, and we both want to come back and see Jodi again on another Friday night, hopefully! This place is solid. Can't beat the pork chop, I'm sorry, you just can't. Buddy bowl: to die. Cocktails are strong and delicious. Caesar salad was a knockout. BUT our last visit there was a major bummer because the service was bizarrely, insanely, ridiculously awful. It was a Sunday night and the place was DEAD. We were the ONLY table in the dining room, literally the one and only table. A few people were seated at the bar, but you could practically hear echoes in the dining area. Walked in the place at 6:15 and walked out a little after 9:00. What? There were two of us. Water glasses never refilled, etc. Server was apologetic about the delays but it made no sense to us. Millions of servers milling about, what the hell was the problem? Made the whole evening kind of a bust. However, the food was amazing. If you WANT a leisurely dinner, can't beat this place. If you have a 13- and 9-year-old at home without a babysitter and you want a quick delicious bite with your mate for your anniversary, not the best choice. read more

I went to JD's not too long ago. The bar was jam-packed with people, there had been a rain out game that night so a heard of people had run from Target Stadium to seek shelter. It was a small cozy space; staff was all very friendly and upbeat. Only down fall is that this place sits right next to a strip club, and Sex World is literally just down the street... So who knows what type of people filter in on a daily basis? I ordered a Turkey burger for about 10 bucks, which came with sweet potato fries.... I have never had such amazing sweet potato fries in my life (no joke)!!! They were covered with cinnamon and sugar! I ate every single one, so delicious! Drinks were not cheap by any means at this joint. If you order a vodka cranberry, be prepared to shell out $1 extra for cranberry juice (per drink). My suggestion is to order only one with the meal. The ladies I came with ordered 3 each, and the bill came and wasn't so pretty. Overall great experience, great atmosphere, good time. This place has great character. Basically it is a steakhouse and bar combination nestled into the area of the Warehouse district which seems to house not only great restaurants (e.g. Saffron) but also many strip clubs. JD Hoyt's is in fact right beside a strip club, and my theory is that its attitude inadvertently is influenced by its neighbors ("tell me your friend, and I will tell you who you are" type of influence). In any case, this is a good place to be if you want to get a good taste of local Minneapolis and its people. Especially on a game day. The place is down-to-earth, bartenders have strong personalities and are cheerful, the clientele is a mix of regulars and newbies (like myself), the ambiance is sporty (at least at the bar where I sat). All of this was true on a Sunday afternoon after a Vikings game. The bartenders are chatty and nice; and inquisitive. Depending on your comfort level (and whom you are with), you may be surprised by some of the questions you get asked -- the couple next to me was when they were asked why they are not married yet; the guy more so than the girl :) Regardless, the service was good, nice, hearty, and friendly. The food was also fine. I got the swordfish, which was blackened and charcoal grilled almost to a perfect juicy medium rare state. It came with many grilled vegetables, without sauce. The dish was plain, but that I view as a plus. The bartender also served me a few pieces if bread with melted cheese, which was delicious with a good glass of wine. In sum, JD Hoyt's was a good experience in all ways. Delicious (yet not outstanding) food, fun service, relaxing Midwestern atmosphere, good people, good ambiance (The ambiance became better when the loud group next to me went back to their table). I go the cajun pork chops here. They were great. I love pork chops. If I could have pork for every meal, I would. Actually, I probably wouldn't because I would probably get sick of it. What I would consider for every meal is the Buddy Bowl. If you don't know what the Buddy Bowl is, you should get yourself to JD Hoyts and try one. If you book reservations for your next visit during your current meal, you KNOW you are at a good restaurant. As we were "mmming" and "awwing" over our plates on our first visit to this steakhouse/BBQ restaurant we put in a reservation for a future date with both my husband and my family. The food is really the star of J.D. Hoyt's (which should be true of any good restaurant). The pork chop is completely out of this world. I don't even like pork chops and I would get it every time. It is tender and thick with just the right amount of seasoning. I would also recommend the steak spaulding. Once you read the description on this winner, you'll understand--"tenderloin fillet topped with a crab cake and Bearnaise sauce", can you think of anything better. This is definitely a great steak house, and a perfect place to bring a date! Valet parking is very convenient and rather inexpensive too! The menu is huge with seafood, steaks, pasta's, and burgers. The Buddy Bowl if fantastic, almost like a Jambalya. Totally sharable and a must have starter! The Shrimp Cocktail should be named the Lobster Cocktail, the shrimp are huge! I ordered the double pork chops. They came out perfectly medium well and very thick and juicy. The Lobster Risotto side dish had so much lobster meat, it was like I had a whole lobster as a side. Service: We were seated right away, Open Table confirmation made, waited on right away, food came fast and enough follow-ups that we felt taken-care of, but not badgered nor overlooked. Ambiance is perfect classy old-school charm (keep with Frank Sinatra and that genre!) but not tired out or outdated at all! Loved the cheesy bread at beginning, corn bread with honey and butter, halibut special, spaghetti squash, pork chop... My only feedback would be points to give points on OpenTable, waitstaff to have a better insight on drinks (staff person seemed a little lost on craft cocktails and wine knowledge) and definitely was super misleading on pork chop size. Estimation provided to us was half of what the pork chop really was. We ended up with 4 or 5 meals worth of food to take home. First time there, celebrating my mom's birthday and we were all pleased by the food. My sister and I made 2 different reservations with the like same name, so when we arrived we were expecting to sit together, but that wasn't the case, due to confusion of our reservations. So i asked for a manager to see if he can accommodate my party's sitting arrangements, at first it started off bad because of the miscommunication of what we wanted, then he finally realized that we wanted to sit in the same section not 2 different areas of the restaurant because our party was 13 people, he said he wouldn't be able to do that because we made 2 different reservations, but when was trying to explain to him that we are the same reservations, same person he still didn't get it, the frustration began. I literally explained to him all we want to do is sit in the same section so we can all talk to each other, he kept saying sorry there is no room, granted restaurant was still empty at this point, so i said look, I'm a restaurant manager myself there is ways you can accommodate my party of 13, especially if the other reservations hasn't arrived yet. All it takes is you to move a few tables around. So i had to walk over to the section and explain to him what it is that We wanted, he said oh geesh I'm sorry man, Yea we can do that for you, next time call ahead and let us know so we can better serve, because when you make 2 different reservations ( with the same name, but different numbers) it's hard to tell you know. I said yea I completely understand, sorry about that. So technically it wasn't his fault, just a few miscommunications. So overall great customer service, and i will return. read more
