We've lived in Acworth for years and have never tried JD's. We were having bbq from another restaurant that was out of sides, so I decided to stop by JD's. This review isn't for their BBQ because we didn't try it. There's plenty of parking and the restaurant is an easy to find location off of Main St in Acworth. I placed my order online and it was coming out when I arrived. I ordered fried okra, baked beans, hush puppies, and fried corn. The beans and hush puppies were both good. The mac and cheese wasn't the best and we probably wouldn't order it again. We didn't eat the fried corn because it was truly a fried corn cob and it was fried pretty hard. BUT the fried okra is what will bring us back again and again. I'm a fried okra lover and my husband likes it too. I started eating it in the car and barely had any left when I got home. I didn't say anything to him, wanted to see what he thought of it. He tried all of the sides and immediately said "damn..this fried okra is so good!" We have now decided that we'll have to give JD's a try for their BBQ and to get more of the fried okra! read more

I've been here twice now and the second time I did not get lean brisket as ordered. But when they they do give lean brisket, it's good. Fried okra was warm and yummy, fried corn was good too. They had sweet and spicy bbq sauces on the table and our plate came with good buttery garlic toast. My husband liked the banana creme pudding. 4 stars is way more the being nice. I've had this place twice, because I believe in second chances. The first visit was about a month ago. I order the 2 meat combo with ribs and brisket. The brisket was ok. The ribs were dry and burnt. Barely any meat. I also ordered the hush puppies with honey butter. They were burnt as well. Second visit was today. Got the same 2 meat combo with ribs and pulled pork. The ribs were burnt AGAIN, not even edible. The pulled pork was ok. The slaw was bland. The hush puppies were better this time around. Ordered a peach cobbler as well. When I picked it up, it was ice cold. I asked the server was it supposed to be cold and she acted as if she didn't know. So she offered to go warm it up. I get it home and it taste like metal or very industrial. I'm not even sure of the flavor. I was so disgusted that I couldn't even take pics. Just threw it all away! So I realize that this place is a chain so this is solely a review for this location. I got the baked Catfish and it was honestly probably some of the best I've ever had. Though I'm not from the south so I haven't had too much of it. The coleslaw wasn't my favorite, it's like they put it in a food grinder. So, as my friend put it... Great if you have dentures! The service was really great, all of the staff seemed attentive and kind, and honest. We would probably find ourselves visiting again next time we want something affordable and southern. read more

We always come to JD's for bbq near the house, but after today we no longer will come back. We came to dine in and waited over 20 minutes to be seen before the host of JD's came over to take our drink order. After another costumer that came in 10mins after us had a waitress take her order and didn't come to our table. There was plenty of girls walking around freely where we were fine if they could reassure us that someone is coming to take our order. We were fed up at this point and felt racially targeted, so we got up and left. We waited another 20 minutes to call JD's to speak the manager not to get free service or food but just wanted them to know of the service we received tonight that we got up and left. The girl on the other line of the phone giggled as I asked to speak to the manager and seem to not really care or take me serious, and kept holding and upholding the line like it was some game before hanging up on me. "Try the corn"-uh, okay. I mean, I like corn as much as the next girl but when your friend and the waitress both express their desire for you to try the corn like what I experienced... well, you can either be worried about the cult they may have joined to give them that much passion or you could trust that they have your best interest at heart and try the corn. I did. And let me tell you it was delicious. Now, let me be clear, it is fried corn. (But not like breaded fried) and you want it when you come here. You need to try it once. The brisket was good just a little saucey for me (I would be fine without sauce of any kind when it comes to BBQ--but I want to keep the integrity of the food I get while out so... Sauce it up! ... I guess.) but, even still, it was really good too. My Atlanta friend summed it up well when she said "Any place that serves its drinks in mason jars is doing something right." The worst food, ambiance and service we have had in a long time. My husband and I went on a Saturday night for the first time at this location. There was no music, TVs or any background noise (unheard of at restaurants). We waited about 5 min for a table to be seated in a room maybe with 7 tables filled. The rest of the room empty. All tables with no food except one that was just served. We ordered sodas and an app, and waited 53 minutes to be served our below average pulled chicken and pork plates. The meat came out cold, fries soggy, baked beans had been sitting so long the top lining was hard. I have never been so disgusted by BBQ. How does someone mess this up? We took two bites, and repulsed, asked for the check. We were slapped with a $55 dollar tab, and a loud "sorry for your wait" by the young high school waitress. We will not ever be back, and by the looks of other guests, they won't either. It's a shame because the Woodstock location is phenomenal. read more

This is one of the best restaurants ever. When I can get away for lunch, I come here. I live in Atlanta but sail on Allatoona. Ok, I'm 62 and have the flexibility. But I adore coming by here for a draft beer and chopped pork sandwich with fried okra. For the skeptics out there, I'm not overweight. Came in with some coworkers for lunch today. It's an old school house which is unique. It did get pretty loud with the acoustics, couldn't really hold a conversation without raising my voice. It seemed like our server was the only one in the restaurant and I was worried the food would take a while because of that, but it surprisingly came out pretty quick. Kept a good game face on. Overall, the food was awesome. A lot of bbq places advertise smoked meats... yet you can't taste the smokiness. Not the case for this place. I got my wings with sauce on the side per recommendation and did not even use it because the naked wing flavor was a hit. Service was phenomenal, I believe her name was Brenna. I bought a Livingsocial deal to J D's BBQ because I've heard a lot of great things about it. To my dismay, the deal only applied to the new location in Acworth which, at the time of my checking, had a ONE-STAR rating (compared to the 4.5 star rating of th e original location in Woodstock). To be fair, only 2 people had reviewed the place, and they were both early on, like soon after their opening. So, my boyfriend and I decided to just go for it on a late Friday afternoon (we were also very broke and hungry). The place looks more like a pleasant southern brunch place than a cozy BBQ restaurant. There is a full bar separated by a wall from the dining area, simple decorations, and big windows to one side of the dining area. It's pretty loud by the kitchen area because of the structure of the building. For starters, we got jalapeno poppers. The presentation was kind of a joke... 5 pieces of fried jalapenos overstuffed with cream cheese just tossed on a bowl (see the picture please...), served with ranch sauce in to-go cups. There was a piece of hair/eye lash in one of the cups... eek. Drinks came out in cute little fruit jar mugs. We ordered 1/2 slab of baby back ribs each. Contrary to other reviews, the food was hot. The meat fell off the bones pretty easily, but it wasn't so tender that it melted in my mouth. The sauce on the table was pretty good-- tangy and peppery. Each plate came with 2 side dishes, so we tried baked beans, fried corn on the cob, onion rings, and cole slaw. The corn on the cob and cole slaw were not too heavy and a good addition to the plate. The other two and garlic bread were unremarkable. Service was prompt and friendly. We stayed for a while just talking after we finished, and the waitress refiled our drinks and didn't rush us. The prices were not bad, even without the discount. But I'd rather drive somewhere else for DELICIOUS bbq rather than settling here. read more

The service was five stars! Our waitress was great! The place was clean, family friendly but on a Friday night when every other restaurant in the area was on a 20-60 min wait we should have known better. If this place was located anywhere but the South it might be good. But we're known for killer BBQ and this was not that. The brisket was good but certain pieces were dry or very fatty. The chopped chicken was a mess I took a bite that was dry and then a bite that was rubbery. Sides were good but nothing special and I found a whole pickle in the cole slaw and the potato salad among the chopped up ones not sure if that was on purpose or someone got lazy. The sauce is good I will definitely give them that. But everything else was ok. Nothing special, nothing memorable and I hate to say it but we'd never go back. People in the South know good BBQ because we can all do pretty well at home. When we go out it has to be great! Unfortunately, the macaroni and cheese was cold and I believe was probably the last of the batch, so really couldn't be eaten (same for my husbands portion and mine). The sandwich was good,the stew was weird. It tasted strongly of onion. I really couldn't taste much else but there was something else strange in ther I couldn't place. It looked fine, didn't seem to have beans or potatoes (neither of which I like in my stew) just tasted strange. The pork was pretty good, chopped well and not too fatty greasy or too dry. There were three sauces on the table, sweet bbq, spicy bbq, and a hot sauce which looked homemade. Sweet was very sweet, spicy was also sweet , this was the one I used. Baked beans tasted fresh from a can, and Mac and cheese didn't have even a hint of cheese flavor. The two sauces they keep out on the table were not impressive either. Unfortunately, the waiter never returned to the table for us to be able to try the other sauces or get refills on drinks.
