As always- superb food and service. We came in for my birthday last night. Started with the tuna tartar. Delicious. The hand a blue cheese wedge. It was big enough for two to split. They even split it for us. Lastly I had the steak medallions. They were amazing as always and we had the rack of lamb and again, tasty as ever. The only negative is the drinks are quite pricy, but- when in Rome. The atmosphere and professional service makes up for the prices. Really solid four stars for me here. It prob would be a little higher if I could give 1/4 or 1/2 more. I have been twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. I have eaten here twice- once for a dine in experience and the other was take out. Our service was excellent each time. I am a vegetarian, but my boyfriend said that Wagyu Burger was the best burger he had ever had. The steak he got the second time was "the best steak I've ever tasted in my life." He was literally able to pull the meat apart with this fingers because it was so tender. On our to go order the burger we ordered was extremely rare which we didn't know until we got home, but I called back up there and Trip was very respectful, extending an invite for us to come back in and get another. If I want a casual meal with an upscale feeling, I always consider this place. The quality of the food and drinks is always on point. There were a few times the service wasn't a 10/10, but the food made up for it. They have an impressive wine list and a pretty decent happy hour as well. Be sure to try the creamed corn with burgers bacon. OMG... Out of this world. I could eat that forever. It's ok for kids, but I would say it's more appropriate for adults or couples. Their crab cakes must be 95% crab, I'm not kidding. The large chunks of crab that they use use are very fresh, tender, and sweet. My favorite side dishes are their amazing au gratin potatoes served sizzling with a wonderful crust in a cast-iron skillet, and their amazing wild mushrooms in truffle butter. I cannot mention one bad experience from many visits to this beautifully conceived, and immaculately managed restaurant. Every single waiter we have had has been polite, friendly, well-mannered, fast, professional and warm. The decor is modern yet opulent. Picture Manhattan penthouse meets country club. I would officially give J Gilberts a 4 1/2 star, not a 4. After a somewhat disappointing food weekend in NYC, I was brought full circle with the dinner at this new steakhouse in STL. The decor is perfect for a steakhouse with the dark brown wood, fire place, plush booths and exposed floor to ceiling wine cellar. All of the staff was extremely attentive and it was nice to see Winged Nut by Urban Chestnut on tap. They had a very nice beer menu to accompany the wine list. I went with a party of 4 on my actual birthday and literally heard every single person rave about the appetizer and their entrees. We started with what I am guessing is their specialty app, hand cut chips smothered in a blue cheese/mayfair dressing. Absolutely delicious and the right amount to snack on before the meal. Between the four of us we ordered a KC Strip (me), bone-in pork chop, prince georges scallop dish and crab cakes. The steak was cooked a perfect medium rare and had just the right amount of fat. The pork chop may have been better, hard to say, because they were both so good. For a steakhouse, I really liked the bite of scallop with berblanc sauce. The crab cakes were seared with very little breading, almost all crab. After some very fancy dinners over the weekend that didn't quite live up, it was awesome to see everyone so excited about their meal. The only reason they do not get a 5 is because the Creme Brulee was underdone. It still tasted good and you could tell it would have been awesome if left to bake for a few more minutes. Overall, I am excited to go back and think it is worth the price (which is very reasonable). We finally have another great steakhouse in town that includes sides and is not way over the top. Glad we gave them a second chance: Our first visit was disappointing, however after several months we returned and they redeemed themselves. Our food and service was outstanding. Our table ordered and shared tastes of ribeye, pork chop, and halibut. Each were cooked perfectly and had mouth watering flavor. The shrimp cocktail for both visits had jumbo shrimp that tasted like I was eating them beachside. But truly, the crab cakes outdid themselves with tasty large bites of real crab. I will definitely return and order those again. I happily upgraded this review from a 3 to 4+. They previously only earned a 3 because last time the shrimp cocktail appetizer was the only food that was really good. That day the steak was dry, the potato wasn't warm enough to melt the butter and the tiny Alaskan King crab was...barely there. We should have spoke up that day. Their management was quick to reply to my post and I'm sure would have served us new plates that day if we had said something. I did not plan to return even though I liked the atmosphere (chic with a nice framed fireplace). However, friends that had a good dining experience here previously convinced us to try again. Our second experience was redemption. Specifically, the crab cakes and pork chop was a rare treat! This restaurant was recommended by a friend. I checked out their website and signed up for their email club. After receiving a $25 discount we decided to try it. We made a reservation for 8pm on Friday night and it really wasn't necessary. The restaurant was maybe half full when we arrived. Nice ambiance and music. Typical dark wood steak house. There is a nice patio area but it is located next to the mall entrance. Our server was very friendly and we ordered a drink while we scanned the menu. Drinks were tasty and the top shelf alcohol drove the prices a little high. My husband and I both decided on the filet combos. He chose a crab cake and I chose the scallops. The food arrived in a timely manner and it was hot. The crab cake was large with nice solid chunks of lump crab. I was surprised to see the scallops were the size of quarters and maybe an inch thick. Although small, they were sweet and cooked well. The sides were pablano au gratin potatoes, Sriracha carrots, Yukon mashed and asparagus. They all tasted fine but nothing stood out as amazing. Run of the mill flavor and the veggies were not bright or fresh looking. The steaks were cooked perfectly (just a little under medium) but there was a hard char on one side. What should have been the star of the plate ended up ruining the taste of everything. There was so much seasoning on the steak that it had burned and gave the steak an extremely salty, bitter taste that overpowered everything on the plate. I know that salt is an essential part of cooking a steak but this was just too much for my taste. I guess if it weren't for the price I probably would give this restaurant a higher rating. I expect much more from the food when I have a tab of $125 (+ tax and tip) for 2 cocktails and 2 entrees. I could think of a dozen other restaurants in the St Louis area that serve that same meal for less with much better quality. There are better options out there than this mall restaurant. Its a chain but it's a big, dark cave of a restaurant / bar which works for me. Cool & dark in the scorching summer, warm & cozy when it's cold out. On the perimeter of West County Mall (next to McCormick & Schmidt's) you might not know it's there unless you're looking for it, which is a shame. The bar area is buzzy & has ample seating with booths, large booths, bar top & a few seats in the waiting/lounge area. The restaurant is large-ish with generous & smaller perimeter booths & center tables. However, the low light, dark wood & large back wall gas fire keep it feeling cozy & warm. J Gilbert's isn't cheap, but the filet steaks are heavenly as are the lump crab cakes. Dont be fooled by some modest appearing portion sizes because everything I've had has been rich and more than satisfying. The wine list is decent with a few nice ones that won't break the bank. Add friendly servers to the mix and JGilberts has become a regular for me. In the 8-10 happy hour and/or meals I've had there this year, I've never had anything but a great time. Although it's buzzy early, the restaurant & bar clear out surprisingly early in my opinion. Although we've never felt rushed by the staff to wind it up, I've gotten up from weekend dinner at 10pm only to notice that the restaurant has emptied around us. It's almost as if they have one seating (7:30-9:30) instead of 2-3 per night. It just seems strange that it clears out so early as it's comfy enough to hangout for a few after dinner drinks in. I got the cheap flat-iron steak with fries for an early dinner. Swapped sweet potato fries with real ones -- no problem. My typical lower quality flat iron steak would put up a good fight to any backyard grilled ribeye you could throw at it. Top it with acho chile / garlic butter; and, you lose. This place has a very classy, modern feel to it. Service and ambience is great for date night as well as for a family night out. They have a great selection of menu for seafood and steaks as well as yummy appetizers. We ordered the lump crab cakes for appetizers. They were bomb. So moist and crisp. We also ordered a filet and salmon with a side of cremated corn and asparagus. I ordered the wash burger with a side of fries. I loved everything in the entrees. The filet and salmon were fresh off the grill and tasted amazing. The cremed corn was probably the highlight of the menu and I will have it over and over again every time I go there. The burger was juicy and tender, and the fries were fresh and crisp. Overall, we had a great experience at the restaurant and would definitely recommend going here. Decided to stop in at J. Gilbert's today and utilize the birthday offer that I receive once a year. My friend and I went in as lunch was ending. Unbeknownst to us, we were unaware that they close to change to the dinner shift. We were seated promptly and greeted by our waitress who was nice, personable and attentive. We both ordered the 6 ounce filet medium. The steak was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The Yukon mashed potatoes were plentiful. The verdict is still out on the lobster Mac and Cheese (up-charge). Seems like it was missing something as the consistency was watery which was odd since Mac and Cheese is normally a hearty dish. Being that I was celebrating my birthday it would've been nice to have been offered dessert options. I probably didn't need it anyway. Nevertheless, I always enjoy J. Gilbert's. I simply wish that we could have ordered from the dinner menu and a sweet treat would have been nice ending to a decent meal. read more

Disappointing -- My husband & I chose this restaurant on a Friday night because it was near our home and we both really wanted a steak along with a nice dinner out after he had a tough work week. The atmosphere was certainly lovely and the bread served while we waited for our food was good, but that's where my compliments end. We each ordered sirloin, medium well. My husband's steak was cooked correctly, but mine was medium, not medium well; both were very dry. The vegetables were kind of mediocre in terms of taste and my husband ordered "carrots," plural. He received one strip of a carrot and some other vegetables he didn't really want. We're not the type of people to be fussy or send food back unless we feel it's unsafe to eat. (There are simply too many people starving to have any other attitude.) We ate what was served to us, but honestly, the chicken tenders & fries served to our two small children were better than our adult entrees. The service was "ok." For the price, we expected the food to taste really good & the service to be top notch. We definitely didn't get what we paid for and are unlikely to return. Updated to say: I only noticed recently (in 2020) that J. Gilbert's staff reached out to me to try to resolve the situation. I responded just to tell them "thanks" and the team invited us back to try to provide us with a more positive experience. Another great dinner at J Gilbert's! The wedge salad is a classic that they do very well, and the warm bread is always a hit with everyone. I started with a Cosmo and my husband had a Manhattan -- both great! My husband had the ribeye with baked potato and spinach; I had the NY Strip with the amazing scalloped potatoes, and asparagus, and my teen always enjoys the streak frites. The food was great, as always, our waiter, Kyle, was wonderful, and the atmosphere was pretty alive for an 8:30pm dinner in St Louis. Love the fire feature along the wall and the cozy atmosphere. Also the waitress, Ashley, was very nice. Based upon food, service, and environment I would have given 4 stars, but it seemed a little pricey for what you get (though I should note we did present a coupon which brought the price down to a fairer amount).
