J Gilberts is usually our go to special restaurant but we were disappointed this time. At the table I ordered a Stella draft beer. It arrived with 1/3 foam. I asked the server to redo and he brought out a still beer with absolutely no head and filled exactly to the line on the glass leaving a noticeable unappealing gap between the beer level and rim. After finishing that I ordered a second and received the same presentation. If I'm spending well over $200 on a meal, I certainly don't expect for the server and bartender to play games with me over an extra ounce of beer. I should also mention that my $32 pork chop was overdone. read more

I took my beautiful wife to J Gilbert's for our 25th engagement anniversary on Valentine's Day. I wanted to make it extra special for her since I planned on re-proposing and presenting her with a new diamond ring...the whole works. The staff at J. Gilbert's made everything happen for me. Brandon Prange, the manager, went out of his way to help me coordinate everything I wanted to do to make the event special...even when I wanted to sneak my guitar in and sing the song I wrote for my wife right there in front of everyone in the restaurant! He worked with Tripp Anway, the general manager to make this happen. He helped create the plan down to the details of where we would be sitting and what direction my wife should sit so that I could sneak out the side door at the right time to get the guitar. Everything went like clockwork with the help of all the staff and especially our wonderful waitress Nikki, who took care of us like we were royalty. She helped me coordinate the whole surprise that night...and it was unbelievable. The crowd was super supportive and cheered loudly when I got down on my knee, proposed and presented her with the ring (she said yes, of course!). They cheered more when they brought me the guitar and I sang her song. It was one of the most memorable evenings we have ever spent, and J. Gilbert's made it happen. But...it is not only the people that make this place special...the atmosphere and the food are top notch. Our filets were cooked to perfection, the drinks are wonderful, the timing of everything is excellent, the wait staff is amazing...and the patrons are equally gracious. Amazing service and the food is sooooooo delicious and high quality. Dining experience was on par with Flemings and other high-end steak places, but minus the pretentiousness. Celebrated a birthday for my daughter @ J Gilbert's this evening. They always do a great job and tonight was above expectations. Joseph, our server, was exceptional. Service was bad. Very slow. No hustle. Our food took over an hour to come out and they were not busy. Complained to the server and he didn't seem to care. Then complained to the manager and she was indifferent. Food was okay and not worth the wait. Half crab sandwich was the size of a White Castle slider. read more

I'm sure this sounds snotty, but like a few other Yelpers mention, I'm not big on the mall and the chain restaurants that are frequently attached. This has as much to do with the parking and crowds as the often mediocre food. However, I think there has been a backlash to the average food of the Houlihan's and Cheesecake Factories of the world, and this is evident in the newer restaurants that are going into malls. West County has a couple of gems, McCormick & Schmicks and J. Gilberts. Sorry Flemings, but this is a new favorite! The ambiance and decor are cozy and intimate...lots of wood, leather, and dark lighting. Great wine list with reasonable prices. We sat at the bar to eat, which was very deep with plenty of room to spread out. The bartender was spot-on...helpful and attentive while letting us carry on with our work chatter as it was a business function. I had the surf and turf, a 4 oz filet and crab cake. The filet was the perfect size, though maybe a bit more medium as opposed to my requested mid-rare. It had a fantastic smoky flavor. The crab cake rocked...literally a scoop of crab meat with a delicious remoulade on the side. The two free sides are a huge bonus. I know a traditional steakhouse is a la carte, but with the high cost of a good steak, that really adds up. This is an opportunity for a high end steak with awesome, free sides. A side note is that they have great bread. It came with regular whipped butter and pastrami flavored butter. Yes, pastrami flavored butter- pepper, coriander, and liquid smoke added in. Interesting and unusual, but fun! Why not mix it up? It would have rocked even more if it was served with rye bread, but it was still pretty tasty. First time here. Was a little skeptical at first since the little one was with us. User reviews said it's not kid friendly but our 8 y/o was able to find something on the kids menu. Our server was knowledgeable, very kind and swift. Bread and butter are a indication to us if the appetizer & main course will be good (not sure how that came about with me & the hubby)- and both butters were good & the bread was warm, soft and flaky. We live in the neighborhood so finally found the time to visit. I had a fillet mignon with spinach, potatoes and mushrooms. My wife had the lamb with rissotto. While the food was good, it wasn't great. My steak seemed not to have any seasoning and was unevenly cooked. Medium on one half while more rare on the other. They talk about the smoky flavor but I thought my wife's lamb looked a bit black. Her seasoned potatoes were OK but she thought the risotto was just so-so. My spinach and potatoes were very good but the mushrooms were nothing to talk about. We also ordered tomato and mozarella salads and were good. Total bill was just under $100 but I was not wow'ed by the food at all. Service was prompt but plastic. Our waitress might as well have worn a smiley mask and done just as well. My husband and I made this our first stop before our honeymoon flight and we are so happy we did. We had the shrimp durango (my husband loved it so much he asked our server to just bring him the sauce that was on the app) and crab bisque. I am from the east so when I say the crab is good, it is good. For our entrees he had the porterhouse and could not stop talking about how great it was. He is quite biased towards his own grilled steaks, so when he says it is great, it has to be amazing. I had filet combo with crab cake (not good, sorry, partial to the East with crab cakes, always a disappointment for me west of Maryland), brussel sprouts (I was in heaven) and mashed potatoes (decent). For dessert he had the creme brûlée and I had a huge slice of heavenly coconut cake. Their drinks were delightful and I highly recommend a glass of their Rodney Strong cab...delicious! So the food...fantastic. The wait staff...excellent. My fiancé and I had a wonderful time throwing our engagement party at this venue until the general manager treated us terribly. He was rude, condescending, and spoke to us like we were children. It was so disappointing that our special event ended that way because we had such high expectations. I won't one star this establishment because one person was terrible, but I won't continue to give a restaurant my business when it is being led by a person who doesn't appreciate my business. I'll be happy to return when the general manager is no longer a part of this otherwise fine restaurant. The food tasted good. Everything was cooked properly but the staff was uneducated and not attentive. The prices are ridiculous. The manager was good and did his job. There's no point in letting a manager know that the chef is raking the customer over the coals to cover food cost this issue lays on the shoulders of the executive chef and the ownership. I'm not going to go on some nonsensical rant to try to get someones attention or a response. This post is just to inform. If you want some pretty good seafood and steaks in a very beautiful restaurant go here. If you want the same quality at a third of the price find a first year culinary student and take them to whole foods and have them prepare the food for you in your house with the lights in your dining room on low and light something on fire. read more

We eat out every night of the week. We are always looking for a good happy hour. This one is great! Goes till 7, which is always a huge advantage in the happy hour world!! Very nice atmosphere, had a couple appetizers at the bar, the staff was very friendly. The maytag chips are very good, especially if you're a fan of blue cheese. I also ordered the shrimp durango, which came out perfect, my only concern is the dish is slightly spicy, but the flavors were excellent. What happened to this place? Did they change management, get sold to somebody new, or the chef and kitchen staff? I used to come here for a great steak and dining experience. This weekend, we had the worst service (we had to ask many times for water, bread and any service). They brought a tasteless, dry, gamey steak that was not cooked properly, the potato was cold and the cheese on the potato had hardened. We even had to ask for steak knives to eat the steak. Normally they provide them when you order the steak. Plus the flies outside buzzing around the tables. WHAT HAPPENED? read more

Our 3rd time here, we had a group of 11. All enjoyed their food and Scott took very good care of us. When serving the entres, they used enough servers to get the meals on the table at once, so no one was sitting there without food in front of them for more than a moment. My wife and I were done with the mall last night and a nice lady told us the restaurant had only been opened two days and implored us to try it. So, with cash in our pockets, we said "sure, why not?" Good quality steaks and they don't make you buy separate sides like their competitors. The prices are very reasonable for what you get. The decor is very nice and the huge fireplace is a great touch. This would be a great place to have a drink and eat some appetizers at the bar. I would come here again. My goal next time is to try the fire roasted chicken. I have had many Ahi Tuna entrees, from Cape Cod to the Keys and J. Gilberts is by far the absolute best. It was fired grilled with a sauce that left me wanting more. I tried my friends scallops that was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. If you are ever in St. Louis, Columbus Ohio, Kansas City, go, it is a sure win. Sounded good but looked like processed blue cheese poured over greasy home-made chips. Yuck. We had Jessica as a server - poor poor service. We even told the manager about the poor service, he stopped by to apologize for he delay getting our check but made effort to correct the situation, offer to comp a drink - nothing, The check delay was such a small part of the bad experience. I don't know how anyone could have a bad experience here. Our server, Jessica, was super knowledgeable and helped us plan the perfect meal. My guy and I split a Caesar salad (big enough to split!) and then I ordered the fillet and lobster tail (and added scallops) and he got the 16oz strip. I want to shout from the rooftops about how great my meal was. Everything was cooked perfectly. After looking at the dessert menu, we decided on the frozen flavors (ice cream made in house). It came with 3 nicely sized scoops (we chose strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate). It was a perfect ending to a great meal. Had a really cozy late lunch after shopping. It was cold outside and the super huge fireplace made the perfect atmosphere including the low lighting. The waitresses and waiters were awesome over-the-top I totally enjoyed having the "choose your item meal" and gin and tonic was the best I've ever had in the world. read more

My husband and I had begun buying a meal from J Gilbert's on a more frequent basis instead of just birthday, anniversary, etc. There are things are the menu we truly enjoyed. We had called in and placed our order for my milestone birthday dinner. My husband's was fine, but my scallops were very sandy. (This was not the norm.) I called J Gilbert's and left a message. Days went by and I had heard nothing; so I called again, thinking maybe they got busy and forgot. Once again, I received no call back. After three weeks, I called again and requested the manager. I indicated that I had left several messages, as well as emailed, but had received no response. I told him that I had purchased the lobster risotto with seared scallops and in the past, they were delicious; however, this particular time they were very sandy. I gave him the date and time of when we came to the restaurant to pick up our order. He said that he would investigate it. It's been several weeks since my conversation with him and like the other scenarios, I have scenarios for callback, no apology or anything. I am highly disappointed for several reasons: we loved the food and had replaced another restaurant with them. Most importantly, sandy scallops show a lack of cleaning them properly; which is a significant and possible health matter. So the calvalier actions have been most disappointing and below below expectations of a fine-dining restaurant. A little courtesy would have went far; yet this affected my feelings and level of their concern for the customers. Thus due to this particular experience, I can't give a positive rating. Updatea on 12/16/21 - Since it's been over 2.5 months now and ALL I get is "we will have the restaurant reach out to you" and they did once, left no message and haven't called me back (even after calling the restaurant and asking who had tried to contact me and leaving my information), I have dropped them to one star for POOR customer service, even after knowing the whole situation. read more

i had only been (and known) about the JGilbert's in Virginia until this past weekend. i decided to have a surprise bday dinner for my bf. the dining experience was wonderful our meal incredibly tasty (the filet combo with scallops/crab cake and 2 sides) but we were seated 40min after our reservation time even though we arrived on time. when i went back to ask the seating hostess about our table she asked whether we were on their waitlist... this was the same person i had 'checkin' with 40min ago. the meal made up for this but considering it was a bday celebration it left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Wonderful experience overall. Went last night for a birthday dinner and had a first rate time and meal. Our server recommended the salmon and this was surprising since the place is a steakhouse. nonetheless two at our table ordered the salmon and the server was right on. Perhaps the best salmon we had ever tasted. The steaks were fantastic as expected. Had the tuna, steak carpacio, and chips for apps and all were yummy. only complaint was that the sour dough roll was over cooked and kind of burnt on the outside. not much of a complaint when thats free anyway. Our server was first rate and the place performed very well. The bar had plenty of action going on for a monday night but the dining room was kind of empty, maybe 7 tables or so. maybe this is St. Louis Monday night. Take my advice go there.
