We had baked oysters and these potato chips with blue cheese (cant remember the name of it) for our appetizers. I've always strayed away from oysters, not a huge fan of seafood, but since these were cooked I gave them a try and they were amazing! The potato chips were also really good and a great way to start lunch. I got the french dip and it was really filling and tasty. The fries paired really well with it! I will say, I thought the lobster mac n cheese was a little bit lacking especially considering the price. It still tasted good, and I understand the lobster was expensive but I think these mac n cheese itself didn't have enough for my personal taste! I would love to say how tasty the food was, or how wonderful the service has been. However, it would appear, I wasn't welcomed to dine here... Step in on a weekend afternoon around 3pm, saw a few diners, but many open tables. We asked for a table inside because it's hot out. Were told since we didn't have a reservation, they are not sure they could accommodate us. At 3pm in a half empty facility!? I can only assume we didn't look like their ideal candidate of guests, as we were given cold shoulders and no greetings while we waited by the host stand. On January 15, 2023 I made a reservation to have brunch with my family who was coming to visit us from New Jersey. We were supposed to have an enjoyable time but the experience we had in the restaurant was very disappointing. The food was scarce, cold, inedible and nobody was in the area where an employee was supposed to serve pancakes and other hot food. When we asked for a glass of milk for a toddler, the waitress said that the restaurant does not have milk. Manhattan is legit. The cherries are not maraschino. That's a plus for me, not for my Grama (yes, I don't add an n and d) but she's not with me, so it doesn't matter. I came a little after 4. It quickly became busy. I'd certainly come back for happy hour. I imagine if I lived here I would meet friends here frequently. Very comfortable setting. The Tuna Tartare was divine with mango, avacado and red onion. The Shrimp Durango less yummy but fresh and well cooked. Could have used a bit more salt, basil and flavor. So i have been seeing this place for years but never got the chance to go. I finally went here for dinner the other night and the service and the food totally blew me away. The establishment has been around for a while so it seemed they have not really updated their indoor dining area but besides the humble indoor, the food and service is top notch. We started with the house bread which is a sourdough loaf served with whipped butter and the crab bisque. My friend who worked here a few years ago told me the crab bisque is actually lobster bisque but they put crab in it (oops did i just spill a house secret?! Well it was an interesting fact). After the delicious soup, i got the 6 oz. filet mignon with the side of potatoes au gratin and pecan green beans and my friend opted for the maple salmon cooked on the flank (literally because it was smoking on the flank when it came) with a side of mushroom risotto and green beans. My steak was medium and cooked perfectly. The steak was easy to cut even with a regular knife and whether paired with the herb butter or by itself, it was delectable. I have not had steak in a while so i really enjoyed my dish. The accompanying sides were also delish. I tasted my friends salmon and mushoom risotto and both were impressive and flavorful. We did not wanted dessert but the server insisted because he was an old colleague of my friend and brought us a rich chocolate cake with raspberry sorbet. It was going to be a choice between the miso seabass with rice and broccolini or the surf and turf, both were specials of the night. I think this place is known for steaks and I was craving for really good beef, so I ordered the latter. The filet was no question just perfect, even having asked for medium well, so they really have good quality beef and know how to make steaks. It was tasty and juicy. However, the 2 lobster tails were inedible. Whoever prepared these threw on an incredible amount of salt! It was like eating salt straight on. Where was the training or quality check? There is no way this is the recipe. We all know that the best lobsters do not need any seasoning because of its natural sweet flavor, and you may dip into butter for additional flavor. For how much we had to pay for this dish, it was totally not worth it to have gotten only a small 6oz filet that I enjoyed with 2 lobster tails that I could not take any more after one bite. Went here for a special occasion - what a disappointment. Service was painfully slow. Took forever to get a drink. Mine was finally brought, but not the one that one of my dining partners ordered. Took another 5+ minutes to get his. We ordered an appetizer - and at the same time I asked for a taste of a different wine for my main meal. It never came. The appetizer showed up (chips with blue cheese - it was pretty meh, and $15!) - then the main course came about 15 minutes later. Still hadn't seen the waiter - no wine taste, and no glass of wine to go with the main course. Had to ask the food runner to find him; finally he showed up and offered to go get me the taste he forgot - while all of our food was sitting on the table already. I said no bring just me a glass, and we all ordered wine which again was slow to come. The food was mediocre - my steak was overcooked (although no one ever came around to ask if it was to my liking). I will say the accompanying scallops were quite tasty, but the two sides were mushy and bland. The food looked thrown on the plate, not nicely arranged - very poor presentation. Given it was a birthday and we didn't want to upset the celebrant, we stayed quiet and just ate. It took a very long time to get the plates cleared when we were done. In fact other emptied tables had dirty dishes sitting for an hour. coffee with desert was lukewarm. Carrot cake was good, though. By the end of the evening, it had taken close to three hours. I had wanted to dine at this restaurant for years, and was extremely disappointed in the experience when it finally happened. WAAAY overpriced, very poor service, food I could have gotten anywhere, and the place desperately needs a facelift inside and from what I could tell perhaps a good cleaning. Driven by for years finally pulled the trigger on Valentine's 2019.. The GF and I have done Ruth Chris Morton's etc and I wanted to do something new .. I didn't tell the gf I just drove ya there . Made a reservation for 7:30 and got there around 7:00.. checked in and was told it would be closer to the reservation which was fine .. grab a couple chairs and I headed to the bar to get a couple drinks . ( they have Elijah Craig).. around 7:30 we are seated and immediately a waiter comes to take our app or and drinks .. we had two waiters/waitresses on this night and they worked so well together .. Started with the shrimp Durango' .... so good I got the 1lb lobster tail which they only have twice a year .. Valentines and New Years . HANDS DOWN best brunch area in northern VA. the food is great, they are every accommodating with big groups, and small groups. they have great private tables! we love love love the food. Anything we have ordered here have been so great. But our favorite is brunch. They have everything from fresh eggs, bacon, your usual breakfast staples - but my favorite is the very fresh raw bar! The also have a roast beef carving station next to the omelette bar! But the reason my family lov s to come here is their friendly staff and amazing service! This was my 2nd visit here and it was very underwhelming. Our server, Aziz , was very short, rude, and unprofessional. We had a few questions when we tried to place our orders. Instead of Aziz listening to our questions, then answering them, he over-talked us. It was to the point we just stopped talking because he wasn't listening at all. We had a birthday coupon for my father's bday and according to the fine print, we needed to mention it prior to ordering. We tried to tell Aziz, and he interrupted mid-sentence that he'd get it at the end and that he'd bring a bday dessert. My mother has dined here before and would get the mixed grill and substitute scallops for extra shrimp and it was never an issue. But today, Aziz stated he'd have to dish with the chef to see if they could do this. Ok cool. No big deal. Now when the food came out, there was only salmon and 3 pieces of shrimp on her plate. She asked Aziz if the additional shrimp were coming, as it was a substitute in place of the scallops. Immediately Aziz looked at the plate and asked "oh well how many did you eat?" Wow!! I couldn't believe he really asked that. The plate had just came out the kitchen literally 5seconds prior. That was disrespectful to even insinuate such a thing. The service was very slow and we felt pretty forgotten. In the section we were seated, we were the only African American patrons so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. Aziz didn't come to check on us after that. We never got the bday dessert he mentioned. The table directly behind us, Aziz was very personable with them. My family and I overheard him telling them that he'd substitute whatever they needed. When it didn't happen, he offered to comp the item. Yes. This is the same guy that told us he wasn't sure if substitutions could happen, now offering another patron a substitution and then to comp (remove from bill) the item because it was served incorrectly. Later on, Aziz was overheard telling these same patrons that "Mondays are always short staffed and services is affected". As you can see by now, Aziz had much more interaction with other guests. As someone who also works in the customer service industry, I know how it feels to work short staffed. But that doesn't make it okay to take away the pleasantries of one patron's experience. You do the best you can the best way you know how and sadly Aziz wasn't able to do that tonight. Just an FYI, I don't recommend dining here on Mondays. I don't want anyone else to have an experience like the one my family and I had tonight! I held J Gilbert's to a very high standard. My family and I drove from Maryland to McLean, Va to dine here. And had I known I was going to receive such sub-par service, I could have chosen another establishment. I've been coming to J Gilberts since they opened. I always order the same dry martini with their Bleu cheese stuffed olives, always very dry. So I stopped by today. The martini was not dry - too much vermouth - yeuck - and you do not serve a martini in a coupe glass! Ever! So when paying ($12.75 not the $8.50 promised for hand-crafted martinis during happy hour) I asked and was told there was a martini glass shortage. Seriously. So I asked if I came back and asked for a proper martini glass would I get one and I was told no, there us a martini glass shortage. Hello! There are restaurant supply places in nova and DC. I can get them delivered in two days via Amazon. I can drive to Tysons and get them now. I will not be back read more

Went back for a special event but the magic was gone. The steaks were still good, but the sides inconsistent... the au gratin was undercooked and the asparagus pale with tough ends. The bench seat was broken and caved in, the edges of the table flaking off paint, and the handles of the steak knives scarred. Had an absolutely delicious brunch with a friend this past Sunday. So many hot and cold options! I especially enjoyed this slightly spicy penne pasta and the salmon. My husband and I dined here tonight and it was a wonderful experience. The only downside is that the table was kind of wide, so we had to speak to each a little louder than expected. For appetizers we ordered the crab cakes and the shrimp Durango. The crab cakes were delicious. The shrimp was ok, just not something I would get again. My husband was pleased with his mojito and I liked my drink (pardon my French). I ordered for an entree the filet combo (4 Oz steak medium and seared scallops) with green beans and baked potato. Everything including the house made steak sauce was absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the ribs with fries and cream corn. The only issue was the fries were too crispy. The prix fixe menu is a salad/soup, entree and dessert. 6 ounce steaks accompanied by a crab cake for me. It came out a juicy medium rare as requested.
