She didn't know. I wanted a drink before the food arrived and told her this twice., e.g., please delay submitting the order. The prime rib arrived about 3 minutes after we ordered. too soon to permit me to enjoy my drink. She never checked to ask how things were or whether we needed anything. My husband and I dined here tonight and it was a wonderful experience. The only downside is that the table was kind of wide, so we had to speak to each a little louder than expected. For appetizers we ordered the crab cakes and the shrimp Durango. The crab cakes were delicious. The shrimp was ok, just not something I would get again. My husband was pleased with his mojito and I liked my drink (pardon my French). I ordered for an entree the filet combo (4 Oz steak medium and seared scallops) with green beans and baked potato. Everything including the house made steak sauce was absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the ribs with fries and cream corn. The only issue was the fries were too crispy. We finished with the carrot cake and it was absolutely amazing. We would definitely return!! read more

This was my 2nd visit here and it was very underwhelming. Our server, Aziz , was very short, rude, and unprofessional. We had a few questions when we tried to place our orders. Instead of Aziz listening to our questions, then answering them, he over-talked us. It was to the point we just stopped talking because he wasn't listening at all. We had a birthday coupon for my father's bday and according to the fine print, we needed to mention it prior to ordering. We tried to tell Aziz, and he interrupted mid-sentence that he'd get it at the end and that he'd bring a bday dessert. My mother has dined here before and would get the mixed grill and substitute scallops for extra shrimp and it was never an issue. But today, Aziz stated he'd have to dish with the chef to see if they could do this. Ok cool. No big deal. Now when the food came out, there was only salmon and 3 pieces of shrimp on her plate. She asked Aziz if the additional shrimp were coming, as it was a substitute in place of the scallops. Immediately Aziz looked at the plate and asked "oh well how many did you eat?" Wow!! I couldn't believe he really asked that. The plate had just came out the kitchen literally 5seconds prior. That was disrespectful to even insinuate such a thing. The service was very slow and we felt pretty forgotten. In the section we were seated, we were the only African American patrons so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. Aziz didn't come to check on us after that. We never got the bday dessert he mentioned. The table directly behind us, Aziz was very personable with them. My family and I overheard him telling them that he'd substitute whatever they needed. When it didn't happen, he offered to comp the item. Yes. This is the same guy that told us he wasn't sure if substitutions could happen, now offering another patron a substitution and then to comp (remove from bill) the item because it was served incorrectly. Later on, Aziz was overheard telling these same patrons that "Mondays are always short staffed and services is affected". As you can see by now, Aziz had much more interaction with other guests. As someone who also works in the customer service industry, I know how it feels to work short staffed. But that doesn't make it okay to take away the pleasantries of one patron's experience. You do the best you can the best way you know how and sadly Aziz wasn't able to do that tonight. Just an FYI, I don't recommend dining here on Mondays. I don't want anyone else to have an experience like the one my family and I had tonight! I held J Gilbert's to a very high standard. My family and I drove from Maryland to McLean, Va to dine here. And had I known I was going to receive such sub-par service, I could have chosen another establishment. When we finally found our server, he was so flustered he just took our order without any explanation of the menu. The prix fixe menu is a salad/soup, entree and dessert. 6 ounce steaks accompanied by a crab cake for me. It came out a juicy medium rare as requested. Dessert was a forgettable cheesecake with strawberry compote. Overall, food was pretty good. Experience pretty plain for a $150 price tag. Probably not coming back. read more

We ordered from here as a lunch to go. We looked online, printed the lunch menu and ordered steak frites lunch. First thing wrong -- menu prices not at all accurate. We thought the steak frites was only going to be $20. Well it's now $29. Way too expensive for that cut of meat. I ordered mine medium rare but received it medium well. Although still good, was not at all the temperature I ordered. My coworker asked for A1 sauce when she ordered on phone, even asked once we arrived if the A1 was included. Raul stated it was in bag, but yet it wasn't. For such a reputable restaurant, why haven't you updated the menus with the new prices. It was a shock to both of us our lunch that included salad was $40 each. I've been coming to J Gilberts since they opened. I always order the same dry martini with their Bleu cheese stuffed olives, always very dry. So I stopped by today. The martini was not dry - too much vermouth - yeuck - and you do not serve a martini in a coupe glass! Ever! So when paying ($12.75 not the $8.50 promised for hand-crafted martinis during happy hour) I asked and was told there was a martini glass shortage. Seriously. J. Gilberts offers a large and delicious brunch buffet. I had never heard of the restaurant of before, but it is conveniently situated a few miles off 495, with ample parking. Inside, lots of wood and stone add a rustic feel - I thought I was in a lodge. The buffet had the standard brunch offerings, but I felt there was a good variety, plus, for a brunch buffet, the quality was really good. My favorites were the waffles (Hue taught me to ask for the big size, otherwise you get mini waffles), smoked salmon, and caprese salad. Now, these dishes would probably be my favorites anywhere, but they were definitely tasty here. The waffle is served hot and crisp, the lox was fresh, and the mozzarella in the salad was flavorful. Also, I did not think anything else I tried was bad (pasta, smoked trout, shrimp, and a homemade donut). The mimosa was good, and thankfully is made with more champagne than orange juice. The restaurant should have had more than one pair of tongs for all dishes, not just some, but they did not. Also, at one point, they ran out of plates, and there was definitely a wait for clean ones. Went back for a special event but the magic was gone. The steaks were still good, but the sides inconsistent... the au gratin was undercooked and the asparagus pale with tough ends. The bench seat was broken and caved in, the edges of the table flaking off paint, and the handles of the steak knives scarred. Love j Gilbert's!! Had a work dinner here awhile ago. Dark and cozy, and always filled with tons of Tyson's area employees during the week. Lots of private rooms are good for groups. Dinner last night was not good. Our server was nice enough but he wasn't really present (no refills of drinks, no checking on us.). Most importantly he didn't keep tabs on the kitchen which forgot to make our entrees- it took over an hour (after the wait to order etc). for them to arrive. There wasn't more than a claw (and I mean the pincer portion) of a lobster in the lobster Cobb, which was missing the avocado, the bacon, and the cheddar promised on the menu but it did have an incredible amount of red onions. An espresso was never delivered but it was charged. The steaks were ok. The seating needs to be updated-the booth seats are too low and saggy. read more

Every time I have come here, the parking lot has been packed.... that goes to show how much everyone loves this place! I came here recently for Restaurant Week. I ordered the Maryland Crab Bisque, it was very tasty and beautifully presented. For my entree, I ordered the Jumbo Limp Crab Cakes with a side of their Lobster mac n' cheese and Salt baked potato with all the toppings. Zero complaints, the crab cakes were stuffed with crab meat, the mac and cheese was perfectly baked and tasted delicious with the lobster sprinkled atop and the potato was also perfectly baked. For my dessert, I ordered the Cheesecake, it was light and fluffy... the perfect end to my meal. I have come here several times with a large party and the restaurant was always very accommodating. There is a back party room you can reserve ahead of time :) The staff have always been amazing and very attentive to its guests, drinks are constantly being refilled without you having to flag someone down. The one downside to J Gilbert's is, as mentioned before, the parking lot. It can be difficult, especially on weekends when this place gets packed, so factor in some time to park if you are trying to make it to a reservation. Besides the parking situation, this place exceeds my expectations in food and service.
