This place impressed me! I went with my family for dinner and we ordered oysters, crab cakes, the shrimp Durango and the onion rings for appetizers and every single item was delicious. I did not expect to like everything as much as I did. The oysters came with toppings that were bursting with flavor and made me wish I ordered double the amount. The sauce on the shrimp Durango was incredible, so much so that we could've drank the whole bowl of sauce afterwards. My dad said it was the best appetizer he's ever had which is saying a lot coming from him. Somehow they made basic onion rings the best onion ring I've ever tried and i I loved that there were multiple sauces that came with it! The breading was cooked to perfection! I could come here regularly just for the apps alone. For the main meal I got the combo of steak and scallops and my family got a variety of steaks, lamb chops and seafood. My strip was cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious and tender, the scallops were a great size and portion and also some of the best I've had in Omaha. So impressed with our experience at J Gilbert's! We went for our anniversary and had a really nice time. We made a reservation which seemed pretty much required and we were seated just about right at our reserved time. Our server, Jordan, was so friendly and knowledgeable. They really provided excellent service. We got the onion rings as an appetizer, it came with three sauces which were nice though the garlic aioli was our favorite. Both of our entrees were excellent! We also received complimentary dessert on account of us celebrating our wedding anniversary(they offered the option of dessert or champagne toast). We chose carrot cake because I saw lots of recommendations about theirs, we also got cheesecake because I'm a sucker for that! The carrot cake was a massive slice, definitely shareable. Dinner in the capital district was a gibe choice for Thanksgiving. The parking was a block away, but I'm not to old yet to walk that. Interesting walk, with all the construction across the street. We had reservations and were seated promptly. The table was set, and we had the bustling noise of a crowded restaurant. Behavior was civil, though, and the noise was pleasant. Ordering turkey seemed de facto for us both, and did not disappoint. All the usual components I expect with Thanksgiving were present. The turkey was still moist and warm, the stuffing was tasty, and the wine by-the-glass suited the meal. Saw several more adventurous orders set down around us, and now figure on going back. This is a nice steakhouse in the Capitol District of downtown Omaha. I have been many times over the years and it is typically a good dining experience with good service. The wood-fired steaks and seafood, particularly the scallops, are standout dishes. The house and wedge salads are also great choices. My daughter (6) likes the burger sliders from the kid's menu and of course the ice cream dessert that comes with. Speaking of dessert, you can't go wrong with the carrot cake or chocolate velvet cake! The prix fixe menu is a good value and you can change sides if desired. On my recent visit I tried the prime rib for the first time and it was disappointing. The color was off to me and while the doneness was right, it looked undercooked. During this visit, I also ordered the wild mushrooms with truffle butter and unfortunately they were not as good as I remember. Previously they were served bubbling hot in a cast iron pan, and the mushrooms were better overall in flavor and variety. Perhaps it was an off night. There's plenty of seating in the bar and dining areas, and there's a unique upstairs dining area with a balcony view. I started out with the pineapple martini which was pretty good. The bread while I wait was pretty good as well with the regular butter. For dinner I went with the pre-fix option (3 courses) because I would get more bang for my buck. I got the Maryland crab soup. It was ok. For my main course I got the 4 oz steak with scallops. That was really really really good. The mashed potatoes were good. The lobster Mac n cheese is very bland. I do not recommend that. I switched it out for the green beans. Been a while since I've been here. Was in business and stopped in on Monday for diner. It was busy for a Monday. I started our with bread and butter. The bread was warm and soft. The butter was whipped. The butter and bread were lacking some kind of flavor and it reminded me of taking mass at church. I had the 8oz Filet Medium Rare. When it first came our, I thought it was over cooked because of the charred outer but it was nice and warm red center. The charring was something I wasn't used to but any more and it would have ruined the streak. The steak itself could have been served a little warmer and I needed the J Gilberts sauce to give it flavor. The scalloped potatoes were good and had some good flavor. The lobster Mac & cheese was not worth the $6 up charge and it was hard to find any lobster. Very disappointed. I sat at the bar and the bartender wasn't that busy. The only criticism I have is that he lacked paying attention to refining my drink. I had to ask for a refill after 5 minutes and a bartender should be on top of that. The Prix Fixe menu is fantastic. You can sub the sides for any others. Plus you choose any soup or salad. The Wedge Salad was 7-8/10. I've had better, but this was above par. Second night I had the Caesar and it was on point! 10/10 would recommend. The Poblano Au Gratin potatoes are unparalleled IMHO. Wow. Had them two nights in a row. This new steakhouse in the downtown Marriott (my favorite hotel to dine and drink in downtown due to the wonderful staff and ambience, btw) was a good experience for our first visit. I like to come to the Marriott to dine and drink at Society, and esp love the comp'd valet here with that experience. I did not realize that dining with J. Gilbert- that valet is not included (separate business from the Marriott family), which made valet $5 plus of course the tip to the driver. That did not shake me much, but wanted to mention here that valet will cost you at least $5 to dine at the steakhouse if you prefer to use this service instead of the structure parking. Starting with the inside, it's as classy and elegant as you would expect from a steakhouse inside of a brand new Marriott. There is dining room seating as well as bar seating, and a second level that looks like it would serve overflow or private parties. The menu is decidedly Omaha Steakhouse fare, with all the most popular cuts of beef making the list as well as standard steakhouse starters and apps like crabcakes, beef carpaccio, and oysters rockefeller. We sampled from both the pre fixie menu and the regular menu, with a smoked salmon on crostini app and crab bisque followed with crab cake, fillet, and a rack of lamb and a chocolate mousse cake for desert. While our server Armando was helpful, chatty and professional, I still felt that the food was good without the wow factor. It was a good meal, no doubt, but there were aspects of almost each dish that I felt could be improved upon. The bisque, too salty. The fillet and my lamb, a bit over cooked past what we asked for. The service and hospitality was amazing though. I think this is a very good steakhouse and definitely worth trying but with so many competitors in town I'd be hard-pressed to consider it in my top three. If I could give 10 stars, I absolutely would! My boyfriend took me to J Gilbert's for my birthday and we had the most special evening! He had told them when he made the reservation it was my birthday and they handed me a hand written card as we were seated that offered a free dessert. Our waitress was absolutely phenomenal--she had a HUHE party of at least 20 people that were sat shortly before we were and then us and she never once left us feeling unattended. She had great recommendations and was so personable! We enjoyed a bottle of Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, oysters rockerfeller, delicious warm bread, and I had the filet with mashed potatoes and green beans with pecans. My boyfriend had the filet and salmon combo with lobster Mac and cheese and creamed corn with bacon--that corn was some of the freshest corn I've ever tasted. We met another couple for dinner and conversation as none of us had been here before. We were seated near the front window of the restaurant, which turned out to be a great location - a bit quieter than in the middle of the dining area, and not quite as closely packed. Our server Lance came over and got our drink orders and recommended some appetizers. We decided to get the Blue Cheese Potato Chips. They were great - home made chips with blue cheese crumbles and then doused with blue cheese sauce. We enjoyed the chips and the very hot sourdough bread (also delicious) and our entrees came out quickly. I got the Prix Fixe 6 oz. Filet. The steak had a great flavor and was cooked as I ordered it. I went with the asparagus and mashed potatoes that are listed as the accompaniments on the menu, but you can mix and match from any of the sides. Both my sides were very good and complimented the steak nicely. Another in our party got the 14 oz. KC Strip which he enjoyed as well. My wife got the 4 oz. Filet with shrimp - she enjoyed the steak, but thought the shrimp was just OK. The final diner in our group got the Wedge Salad, and had a few bites from her husband's steak. For dessert I got the carrot cake as part of my prix fixe - oh my it was huge! Fortunately, Lance had anticipated our response and armed everyone with a fork already. We all shared it and still couldn't quite finish it off. It had a good flavor, and as many are - it was refrigerated. It would have been a bit better if it were closer to room temperature, but it was tasty and decadent. Service was great...our bottle of red wine was properly chilled and there was a great selection to pick from. OMG! This steakhouse was so good! You can't come to Omaha without having steak and this is definitely the place you want to go to have steak. The inside was intimate and romantic. It wasn't very busy when we went, but it seemed very spacious. Our waiter was super nice and answered all the questions we had regarding the menu and what to order. The food is amazing. They have fresh, soft, buttery bread for the table. It is very hard not to fill up on the bread. It is so good. I usually don't gravitate toward the steak and will get lamb or seafood when we go out to steakhouses, but since we were in Omaha, I just had to try the steak. It was some of the most delicious steak I have ever had. It was juicy, flavorful, without taking away from the natural flavors of the steak. A huge selling point to me, is each entree came with it's own side dishes. I don't know if this is typical in the area, but in Chicago, you have to order the side dishes separate and then share with the table. I loved the fact I could get what I wanted and have it on my dish. Overall, this is the place to try steak if you are visiting Omaha. I would say less butter soaked than Mahogany, which i was thankful for, but somehow even more flavor! They provides us a champagne toast for our anniversary, which was just over the top and great! The Onions rings were very beefy, heavy and just perfect. The Calamari was interesting and done perfectly!! We really enjoyed every bite we had here. The Service was a bit of a miss. Granted we had a large table 13 people, however out server was the only one taking care of us, and he had 5 other tables around us to take care of. So the Service we received was very poor. The Front of the House needs to plan much better for groups like ours as they really failed on taking care of our large group. Finally got to try J. Gilbert's after being told multiple times I had to come by many people! Great graduation dinner for me and my family. We had a party of 11 and our service was great and relatively quick. I got the maple plank roasted salmon, I know a steak restaurant- why would I order fish?? So this place just opened on Thursday so I figured I'd give it a try. Since I haven't been having luck in the past without being asked if I made reservations, I called and asked if I needed reservations as I was dining alone and wanted to sit at the bar. The real reason I was out is because this time of the year gets tough for me because my mom was a chef and Thanksgiving was our thing. With that being said, I ordered my mom's favorite cut of meat. "The Ribeye!" With the Ribeye you get two sides so I ordered asparagus and substituted a side for a house salad. But let me back up. You all who read my post know I'm a big fan of customer service. Well Eric and Sarah at the bar were very engaging. It made dining alone very pleasant as we shared stories and laughs about everything from traveling to being greedy. Ok now back to the food..... the house salad was out of control. They have a house made dressing that almost made me drink it out of the bowl. The asparagus was cooked to perfection. I can't stand when it's cooked too long and it loses the crunchiness. Now on to this ribeye. From the smell I could tell it was cooked over wood and one bite I knew this meat had been prepped well before it was put on the fire. The light salt flavor told me it went through a brining process and it was actually done to my liking. I dined here with a friend while visiting Omaha because they'd heard of the jumbo lump crab cakes. I made a reservation through Open Table. When we arrived, the maitre D led us directly to the worst table in the house so my friend insisted on a different seat. Following and eye roll and stating the that the table we requested had been reserved, she took us to another booth!. With my experience, unless the tables are numbered, or a private dining room, it is impossible for guests to book a particular table or booth in a restaurant so I straightaway felt disgusted at this person seating us because she had told a flat out lie!. Then came the meal. I must say our waiter Corey was very nice and seemed knowledgeable enough regarding the menu. The lump crab cakes were good, but that was the only good thing that night. The "sourdough" tasted like someone had mixed in a cupful of lime juice. Sourdough bread has a sour, flavorful taste. This was tangy and flat, and it lacked flavor. We ordered Swordfish and the mixed hash. The fish was the worst swordfish I'd ever had. It was salty and flavorless. The salt in the meal had a weird low-salt undertone, it did not taste like sodium chloride, rather, it tasted like potassium chloride. The potato hash was no better. It sounded rich on the menu, but at table, it was a cacophony of clashing tastes with no flavor whatsoever. The sauce lacked identity. My first time to J Gilbert's 2/23 I found the service to be outstanding and the ambiance very pleasant. Now onto the food, I was really looking forward to prime rib but it was unavailable at 6:45 which was very disappointing. Our sever was very accommodating in suggesting the cowboy ribeye so that is what I decided on with asparagus and cauliflower augratin. The sides were wonderful, unfortunately the ribeye was not. First it was overly charred that gave it a burnt flavor and the quality of the meat was no where near prime and was reeled with tuff gristle. I was so excited to try this place as I heard Omaha has the best steak. I just wish my experience was as great as the food. The ambience was nice but a bit crowded; there's also a room you can reserve for a small party but looks tight. The hostesses have an attitude but ignored it since they are not serving me. Waitress was friendly and nice at first, then every time she walked away it took her longer and longer to get back. Seems like she's new as she kept struggling to explain the menu. After only having a few bites of dinner, she brought me a box to put my food in, brought the bill as I asked then never came back.
