Just got my food delivered after a mix up. Food went to the wrong hotel. I'm willing to forgive that even though the food was lukewarm. Lake Trout ? ( tasted like whiting) was dry, old and seemed like it had been frozen since last year. Chicken livers.... there are no words. Fried chicken just ok. Desserts and biscuits are good not great. Oh my gosh! This place is so good! I ordered delivery to my hotel and got the fried catfish meal that comes with two sides and corn bread. I ordered the hush puppies and cabbage. I also got a side of Mac and cheese (because they won't deliver under $15). The catfish was amazing! Well seasoned but my only complaint is that it wasn't crispy. The cabbage and hush puppies were on point!! The cornbread was sweet and they don't skimp on the piece they give you! I'm sad to say that the Mac and cheese was not good though. It was under seasoned and definitely not "southern style" which was a let down. The delivery took about an hour which I didn't mind because I was anticipating some amazing food and because it was 7 miles away. The place doesn't look very clean or fancy, I would call for delivery or pick up! The food quality is alright, Takes long time to be ready sometime fried and greasy. overall ain't that bad! the most complain I have is They always close early they have sign out there on the window hanging which says close:10pm but they never close on time.. I have a love - hate relationship with this place. I've been ordering from here for years and I'm giving them a very generous 3 stars. The portions are huge. I can get 2-3 servings out of 1. The "safe" options are actually good. I generally stick with their version of Louisiana Creole dishes. Everything else is questionable. I once ordered meatloaf with tomato sauce and received this soft meat with bar b que sauce. Yes, BAR B QUE SAUCE! As if I wouldn't know the difference. All of the sides are obviously from a can or box but most are still good. The mashed potatoes, yams, and vegetables are all good. The corn bread is great (probably Jiffy). Delivery times are ridiculous even on a random week night before 8pm. Last time I ordered they called me an hour later to tell me they didn't have a side I selected. That meant my food hadn't even been prepared much less on it's way. Another time, after waiting almost 2hrs for delivery an older guy showed up and made rude comments about no tip as he left. The messed up part was that I did leave a tip on Grubhub when I checked out. Now I give this place tips in cash because if I ever see his face again he won't get a penny! I would not consider this a soul food option if that's what you're craving. However, aside from the pro's above, this place is a nice alternative to the typical sub shop or Chinese options (when I have the patience to deal with slow delivery). read more

I prefer not to order from here because they tell you that they'll be there in 45 minutes and it always takes about 2 hours for your food to arrive...I could have went to the market and did the work myself in the same time. JNJ is owned by I believe to be Russians, doing their best rendition of soul food. The food is always made to order, fresh and hot. I can assume that. I can say that the spices aren't quite up to par for soul food, they are lacking. They serve fried chicken(always the size of two breasts), ribs, wings, collard greens, mac & cheese, cornbread, fish, etc. The greens are very regular and bland, no seasoning and the macaroni and cheese wasn't cheesey enough. It is a good full meal and they are reasonable prices around $10 plus per person. If you're looking for authentic soul food comforting goodness it is NOT to be found at JNJ!!! The prices are okay and a couple dollars more than expected in most soul food places. If I wanted an almost wannabe home cooked meal I may dial the number I just know to have my salt, pepper and hot sauce handy when they knock on the door. read more

I ordered the fried catfish with sweet corn and fries and it was the worst excuse of a southern meal I've ever had. I couldn't even make myself eat it. For starters the fish was very bad. It was lightly battered and barely fried to the point where it was very soft and limp. The fries were soggy and the corn was not sweet at all, very dry. Wow...... and by wow I mean my mouth is in shock! Where do I begin in how to describe this completely awesome taste bud adventure?! I dove right into the half rack of bbq smotheted baby back ribs. Nicely seasoned meat, and the amount of sauce was complimentary and really helped balance the different rib flavors. The ribs were extremely tender and did not require a knife. Thats right we went right to the fall off the bone ribs bus! My two side items were lightly seasoned french fries, and perfectly seasoned hush puppies! Thankfully my adventure didn't end there. Those crazy Russians did it again! First with The Big Cheese and again with JNJ. Everything on the menu is fantastic. All of the fried fish dishes are amazing! I recommend the pork chops or the St. Louis ribs. The fried cabbage and collard greens are some of the best you can possibly find. I can't say enough about how perfect this place is. If you are going to eat the food you better drive in and pick it up yourself because this place gets BUSY! When the driver showed up, I thought maybe it's just the driver and the restaurant is owned by African Americans. Apparently from the reviews, that's not the case. Wife, myself and 3 year old got two combos: baby back ribs with cornbread, corn and hush puppies and a 4-piece fried chicken with fries (instead of slaw) and a biscuit. We got bottled drinks from the case. They said it would be about 20 minutes since they cook the chicken to order, so I took the toddler for a walk. The ribs were up first then the chicken. Everything was excellent except for the biscuit which was chewy not flakey. The chicken was crispy and the fries tasted like hand-cut one. There are a few tables in the restaurant. When the food is ready, they sit the styrofoam contain on the counter and tell you it's ready. There is a unisex single bathroom in the front. Southern Kitchen is NOT synonymous with Soul Food. Sure all the food on the menu are typical southern soul food offerings, but unfortunately, the taste isn't like typical southern soul food. Even though places to get non-fast food meals at night is basically nonexistent, in the Pikesville & Owings Mills areas, I doubt that I will be buying/ordering from here in the future. To date, from all the items that I have tried, the only thing that I LOVE are their homemade biscuits. They honestly remind me of my Granny's homemade from scratch biscuits that she would cook every Sunday morning. The only difference is that J-N-J's biscuits are drier than my Granny's biscuits used to be. The biscuits are the ONLY reason why I gave them a 2 star instead of a 1 store. Everything else that I have tasted/tried is rather lackluster & bland. I was born & raised in the country in the south, into a family of amazing soul food cookers. So, even though I currently live up here in Baltimore, I am very aware of what southern food &/or soul food should taste like. read more

Just like mom used to make...I arrived in town for a meeting and settled into my hotel and ordered the smothered chicken with greens...after an hour, called to verify it was on it's way, it was...and it was well worth the wait. This took me back to mom's smothered chicken over wild rice...amazing flavor and honestly more than you can finish in one evening. I was so pleased, I ate more than my fill. This is definitely one of my favorite places for delivery. The food is always good and the portions allow for leftovers or can be shared. However, I'm only giving them 3 stars because of the delivery. It takes them well over an hour to deliver the food. My daughter informed me they may only have one driver. Anywhere between thirty minutes to an hour is the typical rate for most places. My last order took over 2 hours which is ridiculous. I may just have to find another place to order from. read more

The biscuits looked like KFC biscuits that had been wrapped up in cling wrap. This is a take out / delivery place that happens to have a few tables inside but they don't want you to eat there really. Food comes in styrofoam containers, so naturally the hot grease from the chicken melts a hole thru the styrofoam. I really hope the delivery guy has a clean car.... Speaking of clean, the bathroom was absolutely disgusting. That reason alone will keep me from coming back. Dirty and a funky smell. I waited for almost ten minutes before anyone even acknowledged that I was there. Then, when the woman finally came to the counter, she was gruff, unfriendly, and borderline mean. I ordered my food, and she just barked out the wait time, then I was back to sitting alone in there. I ordered a barbecue pork sandwich and sweet potato fries, which were both a soggy and tasteless. Found this restaurant on Grub Hub and am so glad I did. I was hungry for southern home cooking and this was pure heaven in a box. Fried catfish, mac and cheese and peach cobbler. I was excited to try their food and was sadly disappointed! Our office is on Reisterstown Road (4 miles away, same road as JNJ) and I ordered online. The Eat24 app actually has a timer on it to track your order. 1 hour 43 minutes to receive the food. After an hour and a half, I called the restaurant for an update. THE ACTUAL QUOTE: "We only received your order 64 minutes ago" ONLY?!?!?!?!?! The fried chicken and french fries were greasy, the fried eggplant was mushy and the mac and cheese was grainy. We ordered food recently while watching the Ravens. I was with some people who eat pretty basic food. One got a tuna salad sand, one got a chicken salad salad. The tuna salad was 8/10 and the chicken salad sand was the best i have ever had and HUGE Also, they own "The Big Cheese" which is attached to it and which you can order from also. The subs are all REALLY good, esp the seafoood chicken cheesesteaks, cheesesteaks and hot italian. I haven't ever ordered anything but subs, so that's all i can vouch for Anyway, if you live in OM, and you wanna get soul/southern food, you can go to that horrific place in the mall, Georgia Peach on Lakeside which is good, but nowhere near as good as JJ. And please don't even bring up Famous Dave's. There are a few other places that you'd have to drive a bit further to, but they can't compare. JNJ has the option to eat in or carry out with delivery. We have only had delivery for this place. The food is good. The portions are very generous: Most meals come with 2 sides and either a bisquit or cornbread. I would suggest the chicken dinners and ribs.
