I love the food. The competency of the wait staff leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I ordered $150 worth of food and she got the order wrong then processed to argue with me. I advised her that I do not eat pork and did not want the sausage in the steam pot, we had a discussion about substituting the sausage for corn or potatoes. So we ended up at Jack's Seafood Shack in Montclair. We were already in the area and since it was dinner time, we thought we would give it a try. Unfortunately this review isn't about the food. We were not given a chance to try it. We were informed that we would not be seated for at least 2-3 hours even though there was no one waiting in front of us. We were advised that on the weekend it is very difficult for them to accommodate walk-ins and that making reservations was strongly recommended. As we were about to leave I noticed that they had counter seating along the street window. A single patron was enjoying his meal and the 5 stools next to him were empty. I inquired if the counter seating was by reservation. I was told that was for their solo diners and that they would not seat a party of 4 along the counter. Hopefully, I'll remember to make a reservation the next time we want to eat there. Then we will get to try the food and a proper review can be given. read more

It can get crowded and can require a wait if you're a walk in. What brought my review down was my recent experience. I called for a reservation and was told they could give me a spot at 7:30. Great. When we arrived they had no table for me, nothing. We waited like every other walk in, while the hostess mostly avoided us. Finally we were seated and ordering food 45 minutes after our reservation. I've heard about this place from a few friends from the area so of course I stumbled on in for lunch with a few friends on a Saturday afternoon, and it was pretty empty. They offer sitting inside and outside. It is located on a busy street in Montclair, and apparently there offer "Free Parking" at the museum parking lot but wasn't advertised except on a small piece of paper on the side window. Parking is usually parking meters or side streets. We were seated promptly and met by our waitress, Scarlett, who was super sweet and accommodating. Food: 2/2 I personally had the lobster roll (Connecticut Style) combo w/ a small soup, my SO had the lobster grilled cheese and my friend ordered the fried shrimp and the lobster mac & cheese. The clam "chowda" was awesome. It was creamy, full of flavor, and full of clams, with the perfect amount of seasonings, paired with the cracker, delicious. The lobster roll was a bit on the small side, however it was filled with lobster meat. I felt that it could have used a teeny, tiny bit more butter but less oil, nonetheless it was still great! Next, the lobster grilled cheese was cheesy, gooey and filled with lobster meat, perfect mix. Here is where it started to go downhill.. The lobster mac & cheese was a disaster. It looked amazing, but once you had it bite, it was the funkiest taste.. it tasted like chlorine! We met her inside so we can see what was going on where we met GREG. So as a manager, if you know that a customer had an issue, you would naturally approach him to reify the issue, but not GREG, he avoided eye contact at all cost with us. So we followed up with our server, and we politely declined for them to remake it for us, and just take it off the bill, so she went to talk to her manager, who then proceeded to scold her in front of the restaurant about our issue because it was HER fault. After the embarrassing moment for Scarlett, she came back to us and was still so polite and sweet, and we paid. I asked her if he yelled at her for the situation, and you can tell she was so upset when she told me it was "fine", and when I asked for the manager's name, she kept saying it was "fine, don't worry about it". Throughout the WHOLE time, GREG was sitting at the desk on his phone. So GREG, how about you actually manage your establishment instead of berating your staff on issues that YOU should be handling or simply GET A NEW JOB, YOU ARE A JOKE. While the food was delicious, I was disgusted with how I saw the manager treat their employees. So will I be back? Was so looking forward to getting takeout at this restaurant and we were very disappointed. everything we had was overcooked and pretty tasteless. I had a Connecticut lobster roll, and while there was a lot of lobster on the roll, it was very rubbery, like the lobster had been around for awhile and was very dry in my mouth. Terrible, threw out more than half of it. We got the shrimp that was to be peeled, it was supposed to be seasoned with old bay. The shrimp were overcooked, again rubbery, with no taste, and then they just poured old bay on it. Yuck! My son, who is not a seafood person, ordered the chicken tenders. He could not eat them without some liquid in his mouth they were so overcooked. All in all, a complete miss, $65 in the garbage. I ordered the Maine lobster roll. The lobster roll, accompaning salad and cole slaw were fantastic. The service less appealing. I had to ask for water, eating utensils and a straw. Had the Connecticut style lobster roll with chips, coleslaw & pickle and a bite of the Maine lobster roll. The amount of meat in the rolls was on par with other establishments. Preferred the Maine lobster roll (glad there was no celery in there and the mayo was light just the way it ought to be.) Great low key casual seafood restaurant in North Jersey. Food and service are top notch and our server Soji was very accommodating to our family that I cured two young children. I was excited to see a laid back seafood spot open up in montclair so we decided to give it a try. The decor is trendy and it's a great place to bring kids. We started with the clam chowder and steamers both were really fresh. I ordered the crab cake sandwich which came with chips. I really would have preferred it come with French fries but not a huge deal. My husband ordered the lobster roll which was a little on the small side yet very good. Great new business idea. It's like bringing a piece of the shore to the suburbs, something Montclair did not quite have (although it has just about everything else). Most seafood places are usually higher end restaurants but this is a nice quick grab. The only reason I rate this four stars is because I feel like they could work on expanding the menu. This was the worst seafood restaurant I've ever been to. Our waitress didn't seem to want to be bothered. The appetizers were delicious, we had friend shrimp, calamari, and crab balls. But the bucket with the lobster in it, yuck. It was sooooo bland, and the clams had tails on them. The clams were also under cooked. The mussels and shrimp in the bucket were good. I would give zero stars if possible. I need to start this review by saying we have eaten at this restaurant several times . Eating in is fine. So for my moms 92nd birthday celebration we were gathering at my home with just my immediate family. Being seafood lovers , my daughter remembered Jacks catered! We tried for over a week to get someone in to CLEARLY explain their various choices but that should have been a red flag ... the catering menu is written in such a way that it's impossible to make sense of it ... in the end we chose to make our own seafood pasta ( THANK GOODNESS!) but ordered the "SEAFOOD COMBO" from Jacks ... We chose the smaller size , I think 10-12 people for $95. Fried Calamari , clams and shrimp . Tried to order online -couldn't set up a pick up time , so I called it in. The young woman I spoke to kept mentioning fries , no fries are mentioned on the menu so I told her to please be aware we were ordering from CATERING MENU , for a group so to be sure we were receiving the correct item. Well my husband picked it up and sure enough what we received appeared to be a regular combo platter enough to feed about 2 people!! With the largest portion being the French fries . What there was of the seafood was overcooked as well. I 100% understand that everything is expensive right now , and seafood has always been worth it to me. But even at the current high prices , this restaurant should have done better . Don't add fries as a filler and sell it as a catered party tray! It's embarrassing to serve on a special day. When I contacted them they just talked in circles - needless to say we won't be back . Oh and by the way - seems as if 24 hours later the word FRIES is in the description! Lol nice move! The menu follows the traditional Boston eatery. lobster in many forms, all good. Crab cakes,traditional style. Frys and chips are tasty. My issue is the name. The menu does dominated by the lobster and crabs. The other seafood was less than might be expected. The decor may be a shack but prices are not. We decided to bring our guests for lobsters for lunch on the day before Thanksgiving 2019 at Jack's SS. We've visited this place several times and we love taking guests (from out of town/out of the country) to experience Maine lobsters without having to travel far. The place was relatively full considering it was the day before a holiday and only one person seemed to be waiting on all tables -- at least we noticed one in particular-her name is Maria. She managed to juggle her time amongst all customers and kept a happy cheerful demeanor. We've seen her before in action briefly, when we last visited about three weeks ago (we were with the same guests--they truly enjoyed the place, we had to go back a second time!! ). Maria selected our lobsters back then as we requested female lobsters. She knows lobsters! This visit she did everything for us and made a good desert recommendation. 5-star rating for good food and excellent service by Maria!
