I grew up in Anchorage and Jackies is, hands down, the best breakfast in Anchorage. Friendly laid back service and food that's amazing. Sure I'm a full grown adult now, but when I come here I go for the pancakes and syrup like a complete child. I also would like to give jackies some credit for establishing my love for reindeer sausage. SO bomb. If you're a Hawaiian, or have a Hawaiian pallet, you'll love this place. Guava juice and spam & eggs are on deck! Since my family has some island history I have a feeling that may be one of the reasons we frequented this place so much growing up. One of my favorite places for breakfast in Anchorage! These folks make outstanding omelettes, and their Hawaiian French Toast is to *die* for! The atmosphere is kitschy - nice old pleather-upholstered booths and ancient chandeliers. The back wall is lined in mirrors, making this small/medium-sized restaurant feel more spacious than it is. It even has a small diner counter where the regulars will sit and happily chat with the wait staff. The service is excellent: even when it's busy, you never feel ignored. The wait staff will shoot you a quick smile to let you know they haven't forgotten about you, and they are not stingy with the coffee! I love that, in particular, because I am a coffee fiend!! They've a great variety of choices, too. If you're looking for good old-fashioned American diner-style food for breakfast (eggs, toast, pancakes, even grits and biscuits and gravy; or for lunch (a nice selection of hot and cold sandwiches and burgers, too!) this is the place for you. Jackie's Place is my favorite Anchorage brunch, where brunch is used in the traditional sense of a meal fit for a lumberjack who's just come off a week-long fast. Newcomers to Alaska may want to order a double-portion so as to get a head start on building up that extra layer of insulation. There is a vague focus on Hawaiian food, as the menu features loco moco and Portuguese sausage. Indeed, this place is all about getting sausage and eggs for breakfast, as they also have excellent reindeer sausage served in a portion small enough to finish but large enough you won't be hungry until dinner. The hash browns are straight out of a can, so don't bother. Often it seems like there's one waitress whose sole job is to walk around re-filling every mug that's less than 75% full. Is that cool or what? I should also mention that even though the place is almost always full on weekends there is never much of a wait. A long Alaskan winter suddenly doesn't seem so bad with this shining beacon of hope across the street from the Bear Tooth. read more

I'm down grading Jackies to 3 stars because I'm almost always get a stomach ache after we eat here, even if i'm only ordering the veggie omelet with rice. I have to assume it's the fat involved in the cooking process.** (**Update: Janice from Jackie's contacted me and told me they don't use butter or oil, only spray, and meals can be requested without the cooking spray. Good to know... thanks Janice!) That said, it's never "food poisoning," just not the meal I'd have on the eve of a first date. I really like the veggie omelet a lot and I have to agree that the rice is a bonus! Makes me feel like I'm back in Hawaii. Just cautious words of advice to people who have sensitive stomachs: this may not be the place for you (**or ask for no cooking spray). We ordered the reindeer sausage breakfast and a short stack. The sausage was decent but the casing was very chewy. Eggs were decent, but the potatoes were incredibly bland. The pancakes were good. I was surprised at how packed this place was on a Saturday morning at 11:00. There were already two groups waiting for a table when we arrived so we took seats at the counter. Our server made us feel welcome and there were quite a few regulars seated around us. The menu was quite extensive but relatively inexpensive. Since I'm from Hawaii, I was pleased to see that they offered island favorites like loco moco, Portuguese sausage, and the option of rice with breakfast instead of potatoes. I opted for the hamburger steak and eggs, and my friend had the Hawaiian French toast. Both of our meals came with a whopping three eggs instead of the usual two and I was pleased that the hamburger steak included grilled diced bell peppers and onions mixed in with the meat. It was a nice touch! My friend enjoyed her toast which was made with Hawaiian sweet bread instead of the usual white. We left very full and satisfied for 20 bucks plus a tip. The best part of Jackie's is the service. They are very friendly, seem to have a lot of regulars, and their happy demeanor added nice ambiance to the experience. Service alone would be five stars. The food at Jackie's isn't bad, but I wouldn't call it particularly good; hence the low rating. As basic diner food goes, they cook things decently. My partner's sandwich was well grilled. The fries were fresh and crisp. But there was little in the way of interesting flavor. The same goes for my French toast, which was very eggy and didn't seem to have any spices added to it, not even cinnamon. The eggs were cooked correctly, but with the sausage links were very greasy. Worst hot chocolate ever. Even IHOP has better hot chocolate. My big issue with the food is the lack of flavor overall. I won't be eating there again. read more

I was actually looking for the Middle Way Cafe; when it took me more than 5 minutes to circle and no luck, I said screw it, I'll go to Jackie's. It's a very simple restaurant, same decor that was there in the 80s, probably older than that. Service gets mixed reviews; it was slow, but the main lady was very nice and gave me an honest opinion to try the french toast. The other server was having an 'off' day and didn't want to be bothered to get creamer for my coffee, or water. This place is ok if you really want to avoid the IHOP crowd for bfast, otherwise, try something else. read more

Jackie's place is my new favorite breakfast joint for the following reasons: - Old fashioned diner/cafe style interior - The place is clean - Service is prompt - Decent prices for Anchorage - The menu is extensive with a good variety of choices not available on most down-home type restaurant menus. The one thing I wish the servers would do differently is to put tea bags in boiling water as soon as they've poured it, or better yet, pour it over the tea bags. Tea is better when the water hasn't cooled off a little before a tea bag begins to steep, but by the time it arrives at a table and the customer opens the tea bag and puts in the hot water, the water has already started cooling. I also prefer heavy china/porcelain/ceramic cups or mugs. I still like Leroy's, but Jackie's Place's menu pushed Leroy's out of my top stop for breakfast. read more

Okay, I don't really GET the 4 and 5 star reviews. I mean, even adding points for the hole-in-the-wall ambiance and friendly waitstaff (they were great), the defining characteristic of any restaurant, to me, is the FOOD. And, uh, this stuff is all either frozen or packaged stuff anyone can make. It's all very Eh. If I could, I'd give it 2 1/2 stars because of the waitresses were super nice and kept my coffee cup full (even if there was only milk and not cream offered and the coffee tasted like Folgers). Alas, the food will have to serve as my defining factor. So if you're looking for a good, home-cooked breakfast, go elsewhere. Jackie's is one of my favorite places for breakfast in Anchorage. Their menu has a Hawaiian tilt to it. Hawaiian French toast and Spam brings back memories of the islands. If you want a good old traditional coffee shop breakfast Jackie's is a good choice. They have a pretty good Patty Melt for lunch as well. They are only open for Breakfast and lunch so don't bother stopping by in the evening. If you are into body building you will also enjoy this restaurant. I.Heart.Jackies. A friend of mine and I go here on a regular basis to chat and catch up and it is always great. It is a 'seat yourself' arrangement and it can sometimes be hard to find a table (but that's a good thing, right?) however the wait is never long. There is also a breakfast counter if you're flying solo and don't want to use a whole table. I'm not sure I have ever ordered anything other than the 2 egg breakfast (scrambled with cheese, bacon and an english muffin) and it's always great. Price? Perfect. And my coffee never goes dry. In fact, I usually have to say 'no thank you' more than once lest I float away on a caffeine infused raft. Many a morning when up far too early we meet them at the front door (6am)...but keep in mind they are only open until 4 if you're thinking of a burger later in the day. read more

On the upside this place is very clean and the staff was friendly, courteous, and prompt. Food came out fast but maybe should've taken longer and given a bit more love: Biscuits and gravy had too much pepper and the biscuits seemed to be from frozen and then burnt on the bottom. Chicken sandwich with fries, chicken flavorless, bun became so thin halfway through just ended up taking the chicken out and eating that. French fries were overdone, dry and plain, I love French fries, not these. Ketchup and salt didn't help. Maybe should change the fryer oil. Coffee needs to be in thermos instead of a pot to keep it from getting that burnt flavor. Hawaiian French toast made from that soft Hawaiian bread so with syrup just made it mushy. Which is fine if you can't chew. Prices are decent for the amount of food received but not for the quality. Probably won't go back. read more

Apparently I left a tip on YELP, not a review. Summary of "tip", is this is a GREAT locals place. Not only for locals, but for the "tourist" as well. We stumbled across Jackie's and was pleasantly surprised. Super friendly service, great menu, and it seems, where everyone is a "bother or sister". Even the salsa seems to homemade. My better half had the biscuits and gravy and were very tasty. I had an omelette with your not "average", home fries/potatoes. Super good. Being from the Deep South (BAMA) I wanted to try the grits but my fear of grits in Alaska turned me off. I'm more than certain they were great as well as everything else. The people are friendly but the food is gross. I just ordered a simple breakfast three scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage patty and it came with biscuits and gravy. The eggs, I don't know how but they were just awful, slimy, and cold. The hash browns had a good seared crust they were eatable. The sausage patty was small but cooked well done . The biscuits were under done and the gravy was terrible just white paste. No love at all I put my spoon in the gravy and it stood up the whole time I was there. It was like a bowl of dough. Decided to try a new venue for our normal Saturday breakfast routine and ended up here at Jackie's. The food was fairly priced, but the quality was right there with the price. I ordered the waffles with a blueberry compote, ham & 2 scrambled eggs. Portions were generous but the waffle was thin and soggy and the ham was way over cooked. Almost bordering on burnt! Overall, a very disappointing meal. The service however was a bright spot and very good which saved them from a 1 star review. read more

So good!! Went here after a hard night's work- I deserved it. Don't judge a book by its cover. The outside of the building is meh, inside is eh. It's s small space where you eat yourself. It was about 85% full- not much space in there but it worked. THE FOOD!! The food people. Yummy in my tummy. I had the Hawaiian French toast with much hesitant. I had had one somewhere else in town and didn't like it but decided to try it here. I'm so glad I did. It was the shizzle. Perfect. So good. I got bacon- 5 pieces I think and scrambled eggs for less than $15 (I think it was $11+). Very reasonably priced. My husband got a spicy thing with burrito wraps- his was better than mine. Mine was sweet while his was savory. Our servers were very nice, polite, patient. I plan on going back to try more on the menu. read more

I stopped in here with a friend on a Wednesday at around 10:39 AM for a late breakfast. There were a few other random locals sporadically seated around this small diner- mostly single professional-appearing types getting breakfast on break, but also a few small families including kids. We were promptly seated in a booth and served our menus, waters, and coffees within 4 minutes flat. Just as another reviewer (Andrew) mentioned, there is a Hawaiian server here who just truly loves every single one of the guests that stop in here. We had a female waitress who was equally as friendly- not overbearing at our table, but prompt with service and ensured our food arrived just right. Both of us ordered omelets- which seem to be one of their specialties. They have a list of omelet's dedicated to locals who've ordered creative 'create your own' options that were worth saving for future reference. You can order a traditional omelets, one of these local's faves, or you can create your own. The 'create your own' menu option is probably one of the most varied in Anchorage with a magnificent array of meats and veggies to add to your egg mixture. You receive two different meats and three veggies in your create-your-own omelet. One of the meats is a yummy Alaskan option- reindeer sausage, but the rest are fairly traditional. I made my own omelet with chicken, bacon, mushrooms, red onion, and cheese. My friend ordered one of the 'local's favorites' that included reindeer sausage, pepper, and some other yummy additions. We both chose a side of hashbrowns. I also received whole wheat toast, and my friend chose an English muffin. Both my friend and I are breakfast fanatics and we're pretty picky when it comes to diner food. In fact- most of the time we're fairly disappointed when we try a local hot spot. The food is often sloppily made, greasy, with enormous portions that just don't feel worth it. To the contrary our meals at Jackie's Place truly were on par. The serving sizes were large, but not overwhelming. Everything was served hot- and oh-my-goodness it was all delicious. The toast was perfectly cooked. The hashbrowns were crispy with a soft interior. And the omelets? Fluffy and filled with so much goodness that I had to keep from over-gorging myself and settled on taking half home for the next day. The establishment was clean, small- but well organized. They have large windows and a wall of mirrors which makes the space seem larger, but it's actually quite small with only about 20 seats total. It's hidden away in the side of a strip-mall area and it truly does seem to be a local's secret. I saw no out of towners here. With that being said, I'm happy we found this place. Their food was by far the best diner breakfast food I've dove into in Anchorage, and I'm sure I'll be back here many more mornings in the future. read more

Jackies Place Restaurant is one of the best values in the Anchorage area. Not only do you get lots of food, it is also very reasonably priced. The wait staff is also very good and kept our drinks topped off. The wait staff shared this responsibility which I like to see in a restaurant. The first place that comes to my mind when I'm hungry for a great breakfast! This is a good diner located in mid-town (Spenard) Anchorage. I have always found the service great and well staffed with service staff that hustles! The owner, Janice, works right along with the crew, which is a sign of a good business, I believe.
