What happened? Jacks had the BEST coffee around worth the larger price, it was that good! Yesterday I received what I would say was the worst cup of coffee of the summer. Either they changed the formula or the staff is not servicing the machines properly. Coffee was bitter dense and unpleasant tasting. This place is cute, it has a great presence. When you walk in, you feel like you are in a cool place. The food, clothing, drinks all give the cafe a story and that's pretty neat. I take off a star because obviously there is something special about the stir brew method, and I am assuming that is why the prices are slightly higher for coffee. But when I asked the staff, they explained stir brew as a method that makes the coffee taste better and that was all they could say. They couldn't really explain the process and to me that makes this place less authentic. read more

I was invited to a meeting here with a local client, so I showed up and took in the delicious aroma of fresh ground coffee as I awaited her arrival. After ordering a mocha latte, I waited by browsing the fun knick knacks of their distinctive decor: framed gorgeous men in various blue-collar worker shots, lots of American flags, a little shop selling t-shirts and messenger bags. Plus the wifi is FREE. My mocha arrived and it had a gorgeous image of a leaf designed into the steamed milk. It was so pretty, but I dove in. I am not exaggerating when I say that this was the MOST DELICIOUS CUP OF COFFEE I HAVE EVER HAD. No. Really. I never thought I would write a review about a coffee house that competes with a local favorite (Mary's), but I reallllly like this place! The decor and general feeling when you walk in is more relaxed and casual. The somewhat haphazard pictures on the wall are a bit odd, but I guess the place was put together in three days so I'm glad they spent their time getting their freezers and espresso machines working instead of worrying about the collage. There is definitely a feeling of "Free Trade" & granola-living here. The unfinished wood, the chalkboard paint on the fridge, the dreadlocks behind the counter... It's not your Starbucks by any means, and I mean that in the most positive way possible. First off - the coffee has been terrific so far. Granted all I have gotten (5x) is the Dirty Harry and a few cookies, but it's been consistent and surprisingly good for just soy milk (or regular, depending on what they've run out of) and espresso. I know, it sounds hard to eff up, but you'd be surprised. I ordered a decaf iced coffee. Girl behind counter put in cream and sugar. I took a sip. I said, "Oh my god, this is good." I took another sip. "Oh my god, this is really good." I finished the whole thing in minutes. It was so damn good. Rich, brown, nutty, not a hint of that sour decaf thing. It's not easy to make decaf taste this good. But they DID it. Only Philz Coffee's iced decaf tastes this good to me. Plus, she'd put in the perfect amount of cream and sugar. I was all excited to be back on the East Coast so I could have Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee, but after this, Dunkin' Donuts just... failed. Also this place has really delicious-looking baked goods, and an amazing selection of drinkable yogurts and other bevvies in the chiller. Wish I could have tried those, too! Nice, airy, high ceilings, summery feel. Pleasant place to be. Kind of place you dream about in the deep of winter when you miss summer and ceiling fans and iced coffee. The coffee is unbeatable. Period. It's the best around. I don't know what he puts in there, but damn, it is good. I'm also a big fan of this place because it's one of the first fair trade places around. Jack clearly makes an effort to stock it with local stuff, which definitely errs on the expensive side, but that's sort of to be expected. The coffee is rather pricey as well ($3.75 for their small-sized cappuccino), but again - I'd rather pay more and know that I'm getting a quality product that actually supported the farmers who helped grow the beans, than cheaper fare of dubious origin. After I politely asked to use it (after I bought a coffee) and mentioned that the public washroom was unusable I was told I couldn't use theirs. I used to love Jack's cappuccinos but the last three visits have absolutely been awful. What a waste of money. Over $15 for a small black coffee, large cappuccino, which by the way, does NOT have any more coffee, just more milk than a small, and a chocolate croissant. The cappuccino was NOT the creamy dream of the past but rather a water down, careless, tasteless mess. The chocolate croissant barely had any chocolate and was stale. On top of the gross food products served, the service was extremely rude. If this was a one-off occasion, I'd say "ok, it's a fluke" but three times in a row and I won't be back. First off everyone on line had a puss on their face and the staff was not accommodating or nice but made you feel like you should be privileged to get a cup of coffee here. Anyway-the girl handed me four cups with no lids and placed them in front of me on the counter-I was by myself, what was I supposed to do with that?! Other products not always so great - bought my five year old a Ronnybrook chocolate milk that he gagged on after the first sip - completely sour. Yes, they exchanged it but they were a bit sniffy: so take a sip then girlfriend, and tell me if you'd want to drink it?? But more to the point, every time I'm in the place there is some kind of problem, and you have to wait forever and a day to first place, and then receive your order from the exceptionally inefficient staffers. Went here as a last stop for coffee before heading home west, I asked for a chai latte with a shot of espresso and almond milk. When I received it, it was scolding hot so 30 minutes into the drive home do I realize they made it completely wrong. Staff was probably the least friendly group I've ever seen and all together over priced for what I got.
