Fun neighborhood spot with delicious food and both indoor and outdoor seating. Came on a Saturday to meet up with a friend-- it was a little chilly outside (60s), but given summer has yet to arrive, it was a great reprieve from the winter weather! They don't take reservations but the wait was pretty short (I want to say around 10-15 minutes?). We were seated outdoors, which was honestly really nice. For food, we got the special, which was a hash, and the hot chicken biscuit. Both of them were delicious and we had leftover even sharing between two people! It's definitely southern comfort food and I would be happy to eat either again (although with the extensive menu I'll be tempted to try something else!). Service was pretty timely and it was a mix of families and friends catching up. Will definitely be back! read more

My friends and I went for some food after an event at Symphony Space. We were glad JP's was open late-ish because few places are around there post-pandemic. The hostess showed me a high booth but my friend has knee issues so I asked for a regular table. She said I could sit on the patio then and didn't offer anything else. A sign of things to come. I asked one of the other staffers to see what could be done since almost every table outside of the bar area, was open. He helped us out and we moved to a table inside. Our waiter, who was new and incredibly friendly, is the only reason I'm giving the extra star. My friend who ordered the trio of pies was happy but my other friend who got several appetizers, only liked the cheese grits (they were good-abundant cheese). He thought the deviled eggs were too sweet and the matzo ball soup lacked flavour. They were out of several items, including the homemade potato chips, which were supposed to come with my salmon burger. The kitchen sent fries and the waiter didn't know the chips accompanied the burger. The fries were okay, but needed more salt and crispness. The salmon burger was fine, but also could have done with more seasoning or contrasting tastes. If not for our waiter Garret or Gareth, the meal would have pretty much been a wash. read more

My nephew LOVES pickles, so naturally, we had to have lunch here. We started with an order of fried pickles (with dilly ranch, obvi), which he loved. He got the matzoh ball soup, which was fine. I had the fried chicken sandwich from the lunch specials, which came with pickle slaw, fries and seasonal soup (mushroom). It was a ton of food and I ended up giving some to my nephew. My brother got the mac and cheese, which was huge and had good quality cheese. We had a friendly team helping us while we were there and they offered us candy as we left (it was Halloween and trick or treating was just starting). read more

Wow we got so much food here and everything was great. Pickled green beans are a must. Biscuits were amazing and so fluffy. Mac and cheese was very good but a little bland imo. Deviled eggs were huge- maybe a little too much filling for me but very flavorful! Would definitely recommend! Portions were huge and we got to take a lot of food home. Delicious and on a busy Sunday brunch no less. Came here as the last meal before leaving new york and we definitely left on a high note food wise. This place is really cute and goes farther back with more tables than you might realize first walking in. And the wait again wasnt more than 30 minutes for a table in beak brunch time. Once we were sat Mason was the best server to have. He let us know which items were favorites and steered us the right way. What we ate: Biscuits & Fixins (Fixins: butter, orange marmalade, honey, strawberry compote, maple butter) Big slab of Bacon Crispy chicken Ceasar salad classic mac and cheese Slow Cooked Meatball Dilly Green Bean Pickle What we Drank Jam Jar The Brooklyn Gin No notes and getting a whole pickle sliced was sooo good. We stopped in with our family of five, and everything from start to finish was perfect. Our waiter Mason was excellent -- attentive without hovering, super friendly with our kids, and made sure everything came out just right. We started with the deviled eggs and fried pickles, both of which were incredible -- crispy, flavorful, and exactly what you want from Southern comfort food. For the main course, we had the fried chicken with honey, and it was unreal -- crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and perfectly balanced by that touch of sweetness. They were also great with young kids, which can be rare in the city. The staff made us feel welcome, helped us navigate the big portions, and made the whole meal fun and stress-free. Highly recommend Jacob's Pickles for anyone looking for amazing comfort food, great service, and a family-friendly vibe. We'll definitely be back! read more

A really nice place - beautiful decor and great ambience . The food was also very good - 1) started w the pickles platter - 10$ for 8 different servings . All of them very good . Very recommended (4.2/5) 2) salmon salad - very good and very large portion . Loads of fresh arugula and the salmon was roasted to perfection (4.1/5) 3) we also got the classic mac and cheese , which were...just ok. Big bustling restaurant on the Upper west side with a huge menu of southern food and drinks. It took us so long to decide our poor waitress had to come back 3 times to take our order. Overall we all really enjoyed the spicy savory crunchy food we got. Some things were a miss though. Jalapeño poppers were great. We're so used to frozen, refried ones at other places, this was a good departure. They were more roasted with spicy melty cheese on top and not spicy. Fried pickles were spears, battered and fried. Great crunch but tasted more batter than the tang of the pickle. Hot Chicken n biscuits was the best item. Served with creamy grits and a huge biscuit. Just get it but it is spicy. Buffalo Mac n cheese was good even though penne shaped pasta didn't feel very southern. Plus needed more flavor with buffalo sauce. Chicken Caesar wrap was disappointing even though it's a generous size. It seemed like they took crispy scraps of chicken from other things for the wrap. I would've liked to see bigger pieces of the chicken. The crisp lettuce and sauce were good tho. There was an unspoken peer pressure when we saw pink cocktails with fresh strawberries on so many tables. So happy we gave in to get the refreshing jam jar cocktail. The loud music and packed restaurant made for a pretty noisy atmosphere. I'm Gen X so think in a few years, I'll be doing takeout only. Our service was wonderful and attentive. read more

I only came for dessert but this place is a hidden gem! The service is absolutely amazing and makes you feel like you're in the south getting southern hospitality. The restaurant is huge and there's no rush to kick out customers (which is true for most NYC restaurants). I thoroughly enjoyed my time just sitting there and being transported. We got the 24 layer chocolate cake and it was incredible! The best slice of chocolate cake I've had in NYC. The fudge topping was amazing and the cake was not too sweet nor dry. I would love to come back for brunch! read more

Hostess was great and friendly, ambiance was good, but the waiter was THE WORST!!! While ordering I said I wanted a dirty martini. He said that they didn't have it so he put down my order as a different house martini. My son asked for a beer and he said they were completely out of draft while the two tables to our right both had a draft beer each. My son got his drink and food and finished eating before I got my drink. I asked for the check without drinking it because it was terrible. I told him it was not good and he ignored me and just gave me the card reader. Did not engage with us AT ALL!!! I will not return because of him. read more

Enjoyed brunch there few months ago. Big portions, our food was really good, and I'm a sucker for pickled vegetables which did not disappoint. Waiter was helpful, service was good. I have been coming to OG JP since they opened, and I have never had a disappointing meal. We were really excited for the new location (closer to where we live and more space), and finally were able to try it this weekend. We had a reservation and were seated quickly. First thing I noticed was the dirty plates on the table. Mine had white debris stuck on the plate. Since we weren't using the small plates, we just had them take it away. Our server was super friendly, and we asked about any new or specialty items on the menu. The pumpkin biscuit was one of their new specials and so I had that subbed in with the coop platter while my boyfriend had the steak and eggs. The coop platter tasted as expected, though the pumpkin biscuit was lackluster. It was more cake-y in texture than biscuit. I probably should've just stuck with their standard biscuit. The steak and eggs, however, were a huge disappointment. First, it came out cold - like the steak had obviously been sitting out for a while and looked dry. We sent it back and waited for another one to come out. The second attempt at the steak came out raw on the inside. We explained to our server that we'll just box it up and finish cooking it at home since we didn't want to wait a third time for them to get it right and we had already finished my plate while waiting. The server was understanding and they knocked off the steak and eggs from our final bill. Overall, the customer service was good and we enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. We're hoping that they can iron out the kinks on their newer menu items, as we do love JP and want to come back. read more

Went with a friend for lunch after a trip to The Met. Arrived around 3, so it became a late lunch or early dinner. The restaurant was crowded but tables were available for immediate seating. Place was a little bit noisy but was able to have a comfortable conversation. Service was ok but not overwhelming. Server came over quickly, took a drink order and gave us ample time to review the menu. There was never a checkin once we got the food delivered by a runner to make sure everything was ok. Now onto the food. We both ordered the burger and fries with fried onions, spicy pickles, spicy sauce and cheddar cheese. Cooked to perfection. I asked if the spicy pickles and sauce be put on the side so I could test. Sauce on the side yes, pickles no. Took em off my self. They did have a bit of a kick. Fries were crispy. We walked in on a Sunday morning and was seated right away for a party of 2. Seating can be a bit tight here. *FOOD* I ordered the sausage gravy smothered chicken ($19) and it did not disappoint! The chicken was perfectly tender and seasoned, smothered with generous heaps of flavorful gravy, while the biscuits were warm and buttery. It also comes with a side of grits. The home fries ($9) were crisped and seasoned well, spread with some slices of roasted red peppers. *SERVICE* Service was very friendly, and our food came out quickly. Loved the food. We were seated downstairs which was ok since the upstairs was so loud. We got four types of pickles, the cornbread and the hot honey chicken sandwich. This was enough for two people and we were stuffed. The portions are giant here. For pickles we had the jalapeños, horseradish pickles, carrots, and greenbeans. I loved the green beans the most. The cornbread was giant! Loved all the cheese and butter it was like bread pudding. The chicken sandwich was also delicious. The fried chicken was crispy and perfectly cooked. Loved the hot honey was great too. For dessert we shared the Valentine's Day strawberry mousse dessert. Wasn't too heavy and was yummy. I had the sangria drink which was flavorful and had nice warm flavors. Service was quick and very friendly. Bathroom was old so not a fan. Jacob's Pickles is reliably good! The portion sizes are massive and you always have leftovers no matter what. I recently came in for the restaurant week lunch and it was an incredible value! A large plate of deviled eggs, breakfast sandwich and dessert for $30. Their sweet tea is also amazing. Service can range from borderline bad to pretty good. I've never been blown away by the service here but it does tend to get very busy at times. When it is busy, the restaurant is pretty loud and chaotic I'm now a vegetarian so I can no longer eat their chicken, and I wish they would offer a bit more vegetarian options outside of the sides . I'd like to see a vegan meat option one day. read more

Food: Excellent . Arrived hot. Filling. Took home a box Service: Dope. Our waitress, Jordan, was amazing, patient and took separate checks!!!! Ambiance: Crowded on a Saturday afternoon, it's to be expected. However, owner should consider widening the entrance, bar area so peeps can have a better place to wait for their party. The bathroom upstairs near the bar, dimly litted, no tissue on the ring, kinda dingy. One of the ladies in my party said the bathroom downstairs had multiple stalls and was clean. Great place for lunch with friends or a big group! We got the cob salad, house mac and cheese, and elote - all were great but we especially loved the biscuits and fixins! The biscuit was so fluffy and warm and the accompanying fresh jams and butters were great. Surprisingly, our least favorite thing here were the pickles! We got the the dill pickles and they honestly tasted pretty ordinary - might try something different next time. Overall, still a great place for lunch! read more

Oh my gosh. Honestly don't think I'd ever get this experience. Or at least not anytime in the foreseeable future. I am apart of this pickle addicts group on Facebook and someone posted their pickle flight from this place and knew I had to go. So I get the opportunity to go to New York for one day and honestly... this place was kinda out of my way and I don't even care. I really wish I would have had someone to enjoy the pickle flights with. They were HUGE. Honestly, it'd be cool if they offered 2 sized flights. One for a single person and one to share :) I could have had 2 pickles from each jar and been totally content. But on the plus side, I had tons to take home. I tried the rosemary vodka lemonade. Super good! But I realized I shouldn't have had a drink like that with pickles haha. They had this sour cider that was so amazing I wanted to cry. It reminded me of this place in tillamook Oregon that sells sour beers and you basically can ONLY get them there. I dream about those drinks to this day, 11 years later. So to find something that tastes similar to their drinks was just nostalgic and priceless. It was a sour cherry cider. They had 2 more sours on draught but I didn't particularly care for them. Onto the pickles. Their classic dill is their best seller. I ate almost all of those. The green beans were so crunchy and delicious. I loved the pickled beets but they're not crunchy and shouldn't be. The carrots were pickled with something spiced and it reminded me of Christmas. I don't care for sweet pickles so I'm not the one to ask, my opinion is very bias. There were 3 different sweet pickles. Bread and butter chip pickles, a sweet spear, and a horseradish pickle. I wish the horseradish pickle wasn't sweet and was just spicy :( Wasn't really spicy at all. Didn't taste horseradish. And last was the jalapeño. That was phenomenal. I woulda eaten more than one but with the lemonade I shouldn't have gotten, I didn't want to make my stomach hot. My bartender Kaaarrrrrlllll was just top notch. Super friendly. Conversed with me. Asked me about my trip and why I was there. Definitely wasn't a be nice to make a good tip kinda person. Was just genuine and knew how to do his job well. I appreciate the conversation since I was there all alone and hardly talked to anyone all day except when I needed help figuring out where I was going. Can't wait to come back one day with friends and try different pickle drinks and actually eat some protein with the pickles!! read more

From the check in process, to the food, to the brief discussion with the waiter--all of it was pretty poor. Instead of being greeted at check in the employee just stared directly at me and waited for me speak. She had an attitude or at best an odd energy from the start. Later the food arrives and the biscuits and chicken are cold. We literally come to JP for the biscuits and they were cold, hard, and stale tasting as if an older batch had been just plucked from the refrigerator and not properly reheated. The waiter came by 10 min after the food was dropped off and asked how we were doing--this was appreciated. But We told him that our biscuits were cold and hard and the chicken was cold too. He too just looked at us and mentioned bringing it back to the kitchen. We declined because we know better than to send food back after complaints. The waiter provided no other options such as bringing us out fresh warm biscuits, bringing us out something else that was hot, or slightly discounting our bill. He was eagerly ready to receive his tip though once the bill came...I was so excited to have this restaurant in my neighborhood because I frequented their other locations. But This experience was disappointing and disincentives any future visits. read more

Same great service and delicious food - plus a new beautiful space! The new location is gorgeous and has much more space. I also appreciate that the patio is dog friend. My go-to is the honey chicken sandwich, which has spicy pickles and is served on a fluffy biscuit and with a side of cheesy grits - yum, yum, yum. However, their mac n'cheese and chicken cesear salad are also fantastic. All of their portions are large so you could easily split one entree and one appetizer. Go and be merry! read more

Our server was super nice and when I asked him his favorite items on the menu he did us right. We started with the pickle chips which turned out to be our favorite dish of the night. Instead of slices of battered bread and butter pickles, Jacob's uses long spears of their hot and sours, and serves them with a slightly spicy aioli. They were perfection. Our family of two adults and two teens also shared the honey fried chicken sando on a biscuit. As our server had warned, it's enough for two. The chicken was tasty and fried just right. I would have preferred not to have a pool of honey on the plate since it made the biscuit a little soggy. And honestly it would have been nice if the kitchen could have cut the sandwich into halves (or actually quarters for the way we were sharing) so we wouldn't have to do so much fried chicken sando surgery. I didn't have high hopes for the fried chicken and French toast my family wanted, especially after the syrup came on top instead of the side as we requested. No matter. The chicken again was really good and the syrup worked. The French toast was exceptional and made with challah. We were so full we couldn't get dessert. I had actually chosen this location so we could go to Milk Bar or Jacob's biscuit bread pudding. We waddled our way home. Jacob's is now in the exclusive pantheon of restaurants we go to when in New York. In fact, we liked this place so much I suggested returning the following night to try the stuff that sounded good that we didn't get to - in particular, the fried green tomatoes and the deviled eggs. We really won out the evening we ate at Jacob's Pickles. Not only was the food great, we were able to eat indoors RIGHT next to the large open door. Rarely does a restaurant have a table with a set-up like that, and as a family who is only eating outdoors to stay COVID safe we were very appreciative. Especially so since it was BRUTALLY hot outside (the high that day was 98) so eating outdoors would have been miserable, especially after walking several blocks from the subway. The AC ended up dripping on us (we speculated it was condensation) at our table by the front door so we moved to another table a little farther inside. We got dripped on there as well. There was a sign up that they are changing locations. We wondered if this could be why. read more

The portions were really large, which is wonderful. The burger was very decadent and delicious overwhelming with onions. Very very happy. The service was really good. They kept on checking on us. It was really great. The energy/ ambiance of the place was super fun young cool highly recommend an omelette which is delicious also, the chicken, hot honey chicken, and the Burger. at first glance, I saw the menu and thought that this was just gonna be another overpriced New York spot - I am now understanding the prices are the way they are due to the serving sizes! we ordered three dishes and all of them match the price tag in size - of course the biscuits and gravy was incredible at the southern style restaurant. three piping hot, soft crumbly biscuits, just soaking in pounds of gravy that had endless chunks of sausage all throughout. despite the mounds of gravy, they maintained their shape and integrity - the egg sandwiches are definitely not the kind of sandwiches you can eat with your hands. they come in a hot skillet and require a fork. or you might end up with half of it on your lap. I was excited to try this place out after hearing all the hype so we made Sunday brunch plans. This place fills up so highly recommend getting a reservation. Now while the vibes and the atmosphere are so lively, I hate to say it but the food was just mid and we tried a lot of items. I will say the standouts were the pickle flights and the fried pickles. The rest were just under seasoned and not very favorable. Also as a southern girl transplanted into NYC, my comfort food expectations are high. The music is painfully loud! They have no decaf coffee. It's 2026! The entire place is empty and they seated 4 tables right next to each other. The music is blaring and customers have to scream to be heard -- and we can hear 4 tables of loud conversation at once. Sadly, the place has gone downhill. read more

First off, this review is for the new location 680 Columbus Ave. I made reservations with the expectation we'd have an experience similar to our first at the Amsterdam location, I left a very positive review which is available. It didn't turn out that way. Let me also say we've eaten at the sister restaurant Masion Picle several times, never had any issues. For starters, I personally don't appreciate being seated near the restroom, or kitchen, etc. Due to the weather, when we arrived the restaurant was about a third full. We asked to be moved which wasn't a problem. Service was fine. GF ordered the shrimp and grits which came out before my entree. It was slightly warm, she sent it back. It came back warmer, but not as if freshly cooked. I ordered the Coop Platter, which came out warm also. I asked for my meal to be reheated, it came back slightly warmer as did GF's. WHAT!! I can only surmise that the food is pre-cooked to handle the volume of customers during peak times. This place had my attention with pickles & biscuits! We enjoyed a quick breakfast here before walking the Brooklyn bridge. We were there at 9am Sunday morning and didn't have to wait. The service and food were fantastic. The shredded cheese in the dish took me by surprise but the server did warn me that it was an open skillet. The biscuit was delicious and the pickles were great! The bathroom was a bit too open for me, I would prefer a door w/no window (it was covered with a film but you could see shapes). I think they are moving locations, so maybe that will change. read more

If a place was ever made for me this would be the one. Not only do I love beer, pickles, and biscuits, I also love chicken. This place has all that with more than worth it servings and southern flavors. As someone from the south, I can't recommend this place enough. Seasonal Apple Pie Biscuit 3.5 of 5 Biscuit iitself is good but doesn't stand out with the apple pie flavor. It absolutely needs the maple butter to complete the dish. Coop Platter 5 of 5 For quality and quantity get this Platter. Each item is delicious even for a regular breakfast. Ask for a side of sausage gravy and strawberry jam with it for the great biscuit. I love Jacob's pickles. Definitely a highlight in the UWS. Been here numerous times and always a hit. My favorite is the honey chicken & pickles but I've tried their meatloaf, Buffalo Mac & Cheese, pickle flights, and more and everything is solid. Definitely try their pickle flight if it's your first time. We also got the jalapeño cornbread for the first time recently and it was really good. Prices are unbeatable too, super unaffordable for huge portion sizes. Service is always good too. Make sure you book a reservation though for the weekends. Definitely recommend this place! read more

It was tough growing up in the restaurant business. It was tough, having both parents working together in a restaurant. For that reason, I thought I would never actually myself get into the business, a point in my life came when I was looking for my creative outlet, there was no other direction that I wanted to take. The culture of the restaurant business was embedded in me. There's something extremely fulfilling, being part of a community, nourishing people, dealing with your guests who become friends, who become family day in and day out. We really felt that was the culture on the Upper West Side, which is exactly why I came here to launch.

When I confronted him about his behavior, he denied it outright and then doubled down with an aggressive, confrontational stance, getting in my face and effectively threatening me. His exact words? "If I tossed your drink on the table, it would have been all over you!", and "Man, shut yo ass!" Completely unprofessional and unacceptable in any setting, let alone an establishment that positions itself as upscale. The manager's response was just as disappointing. Instead of addressing the behavior of his staff, he blamed me, asking why I "chased" the waiter and suggesting I should have gone directly to him. That's not how basic customer service works. I tried to resolve the issue directly, respectfully, and without escalation, something his employee clearly had no interest in. I was thinking if I talk to the waiter first, he wouldn't get in trouble with his manager. To make matters worse, the manager continued to defend the waiter rather than de-escalate the situation. At that point, it was clear this wasn't a one-off issue; it's a reflection of how this place operates. I paid my bill and left. For a venue that attracts world-class jazz talent, it's astonishing how low the standard of service is. This place is doing a disservice to the artists who perform there. I will never return, and I would strongly caution anyone expecting a professional, respectful experience to look elsewhere.

There are thousands of glowing reviews for Jacob's Pickles - all based on how amazing the food is. However, myself and my entire party wouldn't know since we didn't actually get to eat here. I'm writing this review to call out the horrendous customer service that we experienced. My party feels extremely wronged. On March 27th I made a reservation for a party of 11 people for April 15th at 2:45 PM in their downstairs area (the PDR room) - picture attached. On March 27th my other friend also made a reservation for a party of 10 people for April 15th at 2:30 PM in their downstairs aera (the PDR room) - picture attached. We have two separate friend groups who happened to be both celebrating birthdays that day. We didn't care that we wouldn't all be at the same table. However, one of the reasons we chose this restaurant was because we had the option to pick the general location that we would be seated when making our reservation (i.e PDR room, Indoor, or Outdoor). What was important to us was that we would we be in the same section - not the same table. On April 15th (the day of the reservation), we both received a text message asking us to confirm our reservation. Both reservations were verified via text - see attached proof. Upon arrival, we informed them that there was actually a change to both reservations in party size. The reservation for 11 people needed to be updated to 7 people (4 people from that friend group could no longer make it). The reservation for 10 people needed to be updated to 6 people (4 people from that friend group could no longer make it either). The staff told us that they would try to sit our 2 tables near each other but couldn't guarantee it because they were busy. When the waitress came to sit our two reservations, she told us that she would be sitting 1 reservation upstairs and 1 reservation downstairs. We questioned this because we specifically made both reservations for downstairs. We asked to speak with the manager. The manager came over to us and said that it was impossible for us to have picked the section we wanted to be seated in when making a reservation. He said that we were lying about choosing the PDR room when booking our reservation. The problem is you actually can choose the PDR room when booking your reservation. Your staff is mis-informed and instead of apologizing for the mix-up, the manager instead proceeded to call us liars. Since the manager was calling us a liar, I thought I would show him the two email confirmations that clearly state that our reservations are for the PDR room. The manager's response was to say "oh god" and roll his eyes when I tried showing the confirmations. I don't think there is much for me to say here - that's just blatantly rude. Next, he tried to say that he couldn't sit us downstairs because our party sizes had changed and that we wouldn't fit downstairs. Can you please logically explain to me how we wouldn't fit downstairs? If party A has a reservation for 10 people and party B has a reservation for 11 people. There should be 2 tables available for us downstairs already that would fit 10 and 11 people. Those same two tables would still be able to a party of 6 people and party of 7 people. I would understand if we were trying to increase the size of our tables, but we weren't. What it comes down to is 1) the booking site hasn't been properly explained to your staff and 2) your staff was so overwhelmed on that day that they must have accidentally gave one of our PDR tables to a different party without a reservation. At no point of this transaction was an apology ever made. If your team just apologized for their mistake than I probably wouldn't be writing this awful review. The waiter was knowledgeable and helpful. The place is clean, the hostess hospitable. It's just, I don't know how to say it... I HATE their food and the cornpone "charm". In my understanding of food, this is essentially over-sized animal feeding troughs of future cardiac health expenditures. Chicken and pancakes. Perfectly fine pancakes (huge and greasy), rather nice fried chicken, inedible b/c the conception calls for the dish to be slathered with sugar sauce. It may just be me, but why would you generously sugar fried chicken? The "crumbled" bacon is just that, the antithesis of everything good bacon is supposed to be. You know, you take a slice/slab whatever and you cook it so it forms a gorgeous whole of bacony goodness. Nope, not here. Here, we make it into crumbs, destroying the texture and flavor and oh yes... you guessed it... generously pour sugar sauce on the bacon. The second topic is the portions, they are ludicrous, and many of their happiest clients eat and in some cases appear to be escapees from a failed cardiac health/weight loss regimen. Ordering the fries with cheese and gravy was unforgettable. A veritable mountain of fries with lots of cheese, lots of (yolk?) sauce and a gravy and... why? Do y'all really hanker for a hogshead of fries and greasy goodness? It couldn't like be a normal serving? It was literally shaped like the better part of a bowling ball. Again, apparently the "charm" is in eating like you were stuck in a toilet for 3 days, 'cause you jes' couldn't figger how the newfangled spinny thing on that toilet door worked. And forgive me, again, they are lovely folks, but the cornpone is simply exhausting, why would you serve very hot tea in a mason jar? Maybe, not quite aware why the folks above the Mason-Dixon line went to the trouble of putting handles on hot beverage containers? They do what they do: foie gras style stuffing of their diners with Southern food that (I think) no Southerner would eat (busted up bacon, chicken smothered in sugar, no handle tea cups, etc.) well. I just don't see the need to do it. I prefer to get a meal, not a trough. Just me. read more

Jacob's Pickles, oh man. This place has been on and off my bookmarks list for a long time because as much as I love fried chicken and macaroni and cheese, I don't know how I feel about eating a place that touts pickles. I don't really like pickles. However, one of my graduate school friends said that Jacob's Pickles had one of the best fried chicken and macaroni and cheese that she's ever had. She also said that the portion sizes were pretty hefty so sharing is a big plus. My friends and I ended up going here after our final exams on our mutual friend's behest. My friend and I arrived at Jacob's Pickles shortly around five PM and luckily for us, that means we beat the early dinner rush. We ended up ordering pickles, some drinks, the fried chicken biscuit sandwich and the fish tacos. Honestly speaking, I was a little deterred by the pickles, but my apparently Jacob's Pickles is famous for their pickles - otherwise, why would it be called Jacob's Pickles? After a myriad of sexual innuendos about pickles, I was ready to try these famous pickles. Surprisingly, these are the best fried pickles I've ever had. I think that the only other place I've had fried pickles was Hooters, which isn't much, but damn. I'm a fan of these pickles. I think the sauce that comes with it (think spicy mayo) really pulls all the flavors together. Jacob's Pickles' pickles are the best, hands down. I'm sure that even the most adamant pickle enemy would appreciate these pickles. Hot damn. My friend seemed to enjoy his fried chicken biscuit sandwich and my fish tacos were pretty solid. I really enjoyed the grilled vegetables that came with it, probably because they were smothered in butter. The best. I mean other than that, everything was okay. I think that Jacob's Pickles is your standard new American restaurant, which means there is hipster ambiance and it's kind of pricy for what you get. I mean other than that, I'm a big fan of their pickles, which is saying a lot because I detest pickles. Would I go back here? Probably not, though. Sorry I'm not sorry, but pickles aren't enough for me to come to the upper west side. read more

I never write reviews but this place leaves me no option. I wish I can leave zero stars. Came here on a Friday morning . The place was pretty empty with lots of open seats, which is nice. The waiter kept messing up the order, which was fine because everyone makes mistakes. I don't mind. My friend ordered coffee but it didn't come with milk, she asked for milk but it never came, as all the waiter and waitress were just chatting back there nobody was attentive. The music was very loud, so I walked to the hostess and politely asked them if there is any chance to turn the music down a notch, she said no because it's set up this way, I was fine with it , UNTIL our waiter followed me to the hostess stand and said in a very condescending tone " It's going to get louder and louder". I asked if it's possible to move us to outside where it's much quieter, he said rudely" no, you already had your food!" I was in shock how snappy he was, I then said " I didn't want to to complain, but you kept messing up the order earlier, then forgot the milk for 30 min, my friend there was very upset but we didn't want to say anything". He said " oh gosh, she looks like she is having a wonderful time" SERIOUSLY? I went back to my seat, he followed me there and started raising his voice and kept saying things and gaslit me. It made me feel extremely violated and uncomfortable. I said " May I talk to the manager? " He said " I am the manager" never have I ever encounter this much rudeness and aggression in service industry. His name is William, if any management is reading this. Anyway, Jacob's pickle, you have been a neiborhood staple. I will not be returning. However, please change the entitled, rude, aggressive manager William that's working there, I see there are tons of other complaints on Yelp here so I am not alone and wrong. I have been hearing about this place for a little while now and finally got the chance to go. I was not disappointed. I met friends for drinks on Friday evening and we ended up getting a table and staying for dinner. They wouldn't seat us until everyone had arrived (rightfully so) so I got a chance to sit at the bar and order a local beer. I got the Empire Cream Ale and the bartender asked if I wanted to try it first... I didn't because I knew that was the one for me, but I appreciated the offer. Cut to being seated for dinner.... we sat at communal tables. I know that is not for everyone but I happen to love it, and it fits with the vibe of the restaurant. I'm a bloody mary person and I'm not sure when I'll make it back for brunch so I ordered the B.L.T. Bloody Mary. It was fantastic and could serve as an appetizer in itself. It comes with bacon and a pickled egg. As a table we ordered the fried pickles, which are not to be missed. Amazing! For dinner, I had the pork belly beer mussels and fries. It was delicious, and I have no critiques for the dish. I also tried some of my friends cheese grits and they were rich, buttery, and altogether perfect. The service was great as well and even though it was a busy Friday night, we weren't rushed out when we finished eating and drinking. If I had to say one bad thing about 'Jacob's Pickles' it would be.... because we were there for the transition from evening to nighttime, when the lights were dimmed down, it was way too dark. We had to use our cell phones to read the menus..(we were seated in the back dining area. Being sat out front might not have that problem.) Next time I go back, and THERE WILL be a next time, I will try the different selections of pickles, cutely presented on a narrow board in mason jars. read more

Finally was able to get to the upper west and try out Jacobs Pickles. I had pretty high hopes but honestly my experience wasn't great. As expected the place was jam packed but we were able to get seating for 6 at one of the communal tables on a Saturday night. This is where my issues start to begin. The table was way too packed. All of us were sitting on top of each other. Add that with giant plates of food I actually felt trapped. The restaurant was very dimly lit and they were playing rap music which I found very odd. When I think southern food I think of bright vibrant places with music to suit the southern vibe. We repeatedly asked for an extra candle to get some light but was never given one. This I don't blame on the restaurant but more the weather. It was absolutely blistering in there. All of us had to step outside at different times to cool off. It was really bad. They had to eventually turn on the AC but it was too little too late. I thought the service was very ok. It seemed to me that our waitress had too many tables. She was not very attentive which led to our drinks being empty. We also never received that candle. The only reason I am giving it 3 stars is because of the food. I thought the portions were awesome. I loved the assortment of pickled foods. The Mac and cheese was on point and it was some of the best fried chicken and biscuits I've ever had. The Jam Jar cocktail is a must get. We recently visited NYC and dined at quite a few restaurants. One place that we very much enjoyed was Jacob's Pickles on Amsterdam Ave. in the Upper West Side. This is a neat place with modern decor, friendly staff, serving up large portions of Southern style comfort foods. Opening hours 9am to late (Mon-Fri) and 10am to late (Sat-Sun). During our lunch had the 6-hour short rib, served with jalapeno cheddar mash and honey-glazed carrots. The ribs were succulent and flavourful, the mash was better than we expected. In traditional southern manner, this was a huge portion, requiring quite an appetite to finish. We also ordered the Hot chicken biscuit served with a side of grits. Didn't realise New Yorkers could handle hot sauce like this. Boy it opened up my taste buds... and in a good way. The chicken was buttermilk fried, crunchy and crispy on the outside, soft and tasty chicken on the inside. Topped with sour pickle slices and delicious hot sauce, served on an open soft crumbly biscuit, this was just an outstanding chicken biscuit order, one I'd gladly have again. In the end, we really liked Jacob's Pickles and and were surprised how much we enjoyed their food and take on Southern cuisine. Dishes here very large and tasted great. Service was friendly, polite and timely and the restaurant is well decorated. Based on our meal experience, this is an easy restaurant recommendation to make for visitors to NYC at this time. read more

I've walked by this place many times and never even noticed it. From the outside, it might look like a bar similar to the others that line this avenue in this part of town. A friend of mine actually pointed the place out and I'm glad she did. Overall, this is a great place for southern style food. First, the service was excellent. I wouldn't be surprised if there is normally a wait for a table, but we were seated immediately. From the host to the server to the guy who poured our water, everything was done promptly and with a smile. We ordered the biscuits and gravy to start, chicken and pancakes, and the chicken bacon egg & cheese southern biscuit sandwich. The biscuits were smothered in sausage gravy that had pieces of mushroom in it. It reminded me of Campbells cream of mushroom soup - the consistency was good and the taste was excellent. The chicken and pancakes were a novel idea but it's amazing how well those two blend with the right amount of maple syrup. The bacon egg & cheese southern biscuit sandwich was also very good. Portion size was very generous and pricing was very reasonable considering the portion and taste. The crowd was mixed and not typical of the Waffle House crowd that you'll see in the south. If you're looking for southern food and don't want to go to an area where you have a chance to get shot or robbed, definitely check this place out. read more

Jacobs Pickles is about as good as it can get. The service was wonderful and the food even better (if possible). We came in on a very busy Thursday night a few weeks ago. While we saw multiple parties go on a wait list, my boyfriend and I were greeted by two very cheery host/hostess. The two of them informed us a table was being cleared off and would be ready shortly. The guy started asking us about if we'd visited before and giving us recommendations. He informed us of the extensive beer list and the other hostess walked us to our table cheerfully. Which is rare for hostesses. The blonde hostess made sure we liked our table and even pulled out our chairs. So sweet. We were in the back portion of the restaurant which is very homey and cozy. We were greeted immediately with water. Our waiter, Sarah, was very nice and accommodating. She was very knowledgable about both the beer list and menu. We got a few beers and an order or fried pickles to start. They were incredible. To eat we got the BLT sandwich and burger. Now I never order burgers from nice places but this one was a hit. It was slow cooked and very juicy. Not to mention the pickles on top were a hit. My sandwich was a perfect blend of indulgent and southern comfort. I'm originally from West Virginia and these grits were better than any I'd ever had. I'll definitely come back to JPs. Definitely a must! read more

Let me start off by saying- I have been coming to Jacobs pickles for months now (since I moved to the Upper West Side)- it has a warm atmosphere with ok food, and a nice beer selection.But after a few bad experiences, today has pushed me over the edge- to never return and tell my friends to do the same. Today we went to have brunch (Sunday) around 2:30pm, and was told there was a wait--- normal... But nearly 2 hours later we were staring at empty tables while a manager of some sort wined and dined his friends. (I assume he was a manager because he kept checking in with the host and severs).Once we sat, we were ready to order: 2 breakfast sandwiches and proceeded to wait another half an hour until the food came. It made for a long, unpleasant afternoon. I would like to say the servers & bartenders do a great job: all very helpful, polite people but at Jacobs Pickles there is a constant cycle of employees, unclean drinking glasses, raw meat served, and empty tables with a 2 hr wait!? As someone with serving experience- it seems to me that there are some serious management problems. Oh! And one time this fall- a manager proceeded to clean an overhead area fan WHILE I ate... Yum, I'll have the mac n' cheese with dust please! I wish them well with their business- they will no longer have mine. read more

Hands down the best food I have ever had. Words cannot describe the heavenly food crafted by God himself. This is the food that angels sing about in the heavens. The entire night my group of friends were raving about the food. When we got to meet the owner everyone was just so thrilled to tell him about how great the food was. We started with the "biscuits and fixin's" and the "sweet spicy carrots, sour green tomatos, dilly green beans, and hot sour cukes". The carrots and the biscuits were incredible. Make sure to try the strawberry jam with the biscuits! For the main course we all got the "Chicken and pancakes" which was the best food decision I have ever made. Two giant fluffy pancakes with chicken breasts fried and spiced to perfection. It was so much that I had to take it home. As a side we got the "mushroom mac and cheese" which was equally as amazing. For dessert we got the "banana bread pudding" which was great, and I don't even like bread pudding! The staff was incredibly nice and so much fun. Right before we left the waiter brought my entire table a round of shots for just being great customers! My coworker who lives on the upper west side recommended this new place that just opened. Six of us decided to try it out. The space is big and looks amazing. Great arrangement of tables, smaller ones for a relaxed dinner with your friend and communal tables for the whole office. Beer selection is impressive but we had to start with our ritual...cocktails! WOW. These guys don't know just pickles. They infuse their own bourbon and vodka and the result is the most delicious cocktails. My favorite is the Kentucky Porch Sipper. I was so impressed i had to speak to the bartender. She said that the secret is the house made aromatic bitters. We ordered almost everything from the menu. The fried pickles are the best i have ever had. The chicken biscuit sandwich with the mushroom gravy came with a generous portion of creamy grits. Very satisfying. One of the girls that wanted to have something lighter ordered the salmon salad with the light citrus dressing. Very nice portion both on the fish and on the fresh greens. I really try hard to love this place, I've tried, but they have a few setbacks. First of all, on a positive note, the drinks here are amazing, the portions are huge (maybe too huge), and it's easy to go here with groups. They also serve food super fast. Their Mac n cheese is their best dish. Cons: Pretty long wait, which can mean that if you do have a big group the chances of getting a table soon is unlikely. They also don't allow reservations. Their food in my opinion is far too large. As soon as it's placed in front of you, you're already full just looking at it. They could definitely reduce the portion to prevent less food waste and also make their food seem more appealing and digestible. It could also be helpful to not put a biscuit on the bottom of their chicken dishes, because with everything on top, the biscuit basically disintegrates before you eat it. I also think that while their table service is great, their front of house is a mess. They "accidentally" gave our table away as a mistake and we had to wait a little bit more because of their mistake. read more

The Upper West Side has a serious lack of cool, fun, tasty places to go hang out. Thankfully, Jacobs pickle tackles this problem head on. A wide selection of craft beer and interesting pickled items make for a great laid back night of drinking and snacking. Also, an inventive and fun cocktail list (spicy habenero brine margarita!) keeps me interested even when I'm in the mood for something sleeker and stronger. The place itself has a great design, with a storefront that opens up fully, community table in front, and farm inspired decor. Service has always been up to par here as well. They lose the 5th start due to consistency issues. A number of the times i have been, they have been out of stock on certain beers. In addition, the pickles are not always consistent. Sometimes crunchier than other times, sometimes spicier, sometimes sweeter. Overall, an excellent addition to the UWS, and i love anywhere that pays homage to American Craft brews in as big and a fun way as Jacobs Pickle does. . read more

Solid brunch spot on the Upper West Side -- and one I'd happily return to. Jacob's Pickles is a large, airy space, and they've done a good job with the layout. Tables are spacious, conversations stay comfortable, and it never gets that overwhelming brunch-crowd noise that can ruin a meal. A rare thing for a popular NYC spot. THE GOOD - The po' boy sandwich was excellent -- well put together and hit the spot. - The endive salad was a nice, fresh complement. - Portions are generous. You will not leave hungry. - Service was attentive and friendly throughout -- no long waits between dishes. ONE THING TO KNOW Do yourself a favor and make a reservation. We had one, and were seated right away -- but the wait for walk-ins looked brutal. This place draws a crowd, especially on weekends. Don't show up and hope for the best. I was honestly a little disappointed with my experience here. Everyone I know, including myself has been waiting months for this place to open, and honestly, it fell short of my expectations. I sat in the back with my two girls and it seemed like there was only one waitress for the entire restaurant. It took the server forever to talk to us, and to my surprise, the Mac and Cheese came with mushrooms, which my daughter hates... I felt so bad for the other patrons who had to put up with her crying. To top it off, the biscuits were really dry on our "biscuits and fixings", and we were given a larger order of pickles than I requested AND charged for. While I loved the chicken, and tasted bits of brilliance in the making, I couldn't get beyond the strangely disorganized atmosphere and surprises with the size and contents of my food. I don't want to discount the possibility of coming back and changing my rating, but I would seriously hope for a better experience in the future. read more

This iconic restaurant deserves a 5/5, without a doubt in my mind! I won't say this lightly, but this is truly one of my favorite *breakfast* spots in the city. I want to echo another reviewer that mentioned this spot was elevated comfort food. I could not agree more! I can't say I've tried a vast majority of the menu because I get hooked on a few staples and stick to those. I would love to try as much as possible though. Heads up though- these biscuits DO NOT PLAY. They are HUGE and filled with tons of flavor. I've had the pleasure of tasting: - Egg and Cheese Biscuit sandwich - Honey chicken and pickles Biscuit sandwich - Fried green tomatoes - Cheese grits Everything is amazing, literally everything. The dining space was very pretty, surrounded by modern interior and decor. They also had plenty of outdoor seating as well. I started the lunch with a strawberry Nojito that was extra citrusy. After adding some more water, I felt the drink tasted much better. For appetizers we ordered the zucchini fries that came with a side of marinara sauce. The pieces were over fried so much they got dark brown, would have been better if they were cooked for less time. For entree I got the LPB burger. Loved that they put the onion, lettuce, tomato and pickle on the side. The patty was cooked exactly how I requested and the melted cheese made the burger delicious with the brioche bun. The fries were thin and good quality. It came with ketchup and aioli sauce. The service was decent throughout the lunch. Our server did a good job of keeping up with our table as the place got super busy later on. Few other staff members aggressively removed empty plates from the table and quickly packed the leftovers we had on the table. Overall we had a good experience but some of the dishes and the drink could have been better.

They did have a pretty good NYC restaurant week 3-course dinner menu for $45 that my husband ordered. We got: - meatballs: pretty decent! The serving came with 3 medium sized meatballs. The texture was a little softer/ fattier than I like but with the acidity of the tomato and umami of the Parmesan, they were well balanced. The fresh basil leaves bumped it up a notch and added brightness. This also came with two slices of bread to enjoy the sauces. Nice app to offer in their NYC restaurant week menu! - branzino: my husband got this at his main and he thought it was okay. The fish was on the drier side and the portion was a bit small. Lemony hints but he said the flavor was a bit bland. Good if you want a lighter meal but probably better to try another one of their dishes. - Toscano salad with chicken: I ordered a toscano salad à la carte and the thought it was pretty good and filling! The chicken was very tender, although I did not love the spice blend they used for it. The salad came with kale, roasted carrots, dollops of ricotta, pumpkin seeds, croutons, and a tangy lemon vinaigrette that tied it all together. Very good combination of acidity, creamy sweetness from the ricotta, nuttiness from the pumpkin seeds, and caramelization from the carrots. Would 100% default to this if I return! - Cannoli: the restaurant week menu came with cannoli that were surprisingly good. The shell was perfectly crispy, and the creamy ricotta filling had the right amount of sweetness without being overpowering. Overall, this is a cute spot in the center of a very active part of the UWS which makes it convenient for a dinner/lunch spot. The food definitely did not blow my mind but was solid. Favorite bite was definitely the salad! I did not try their pasta so maybe my rating would change based on that. Service was on the slower side for a weekend so be prepared to wait. 3.5 stars from me.
