The food is creative and delicious. Sometimes they have char grilled oysters, which are phenomenal. The alligator pie is essentially rich as an appetizer. Fried oysters and spinach salad is also a good choice. You can't go wrong with the fish entrées. Everyone we have tried has been fantastic. It's a classic New Orleans Orleans fun place. The vibes here are legit, and the service is very warm. Our waiter was so patient with my 2-year-old nephew and kind to my 5-year-old niece. Complimentary (?) cornbread is amazing. Gumbo and jambalaya were great, though felt like they were missing a little something. The side beans, mashed potatoes, and rice were full of flavor -- like wow, I generally expect mashed potatoes to be a bit bland, but this stuff was deep (in my smiling soul and struggling arteries). The shoestring fries were delicious. 1 star off given they're a bit more expensive than I would expect, and can't make reservations for parties under 5 people. Not famous since 1996. Love coming to this local favorite. So delicious! Start with some complimentary cornbread and add an order of fried green tomatoes. Served with remoulade sauce, they are so good. So many great seafood choices for entrées. Our favorite is the potato crusted drum served on a caper beurre blanc. The grouper cauliflower and pan fried drum with pecan meunière sauce are also great dinner options. Entrees are served with a spinach salad and a choice of two sides. The mashed sweet potatoes and butter beans and rice are great accompaniments. Love the eclectic dining room. The bar filled with so many "things" assembled together is just plain fun. We were forewarned about the wait... 45 minutes...but it was well worth it. The crawfish etouffee was plentiful and yummy. The pan fried Gulf Fish with a pecan meunière was so good and had a very complex flavor. The sauce was amazing. We also had the fried green tomatoes. They were solid with a fried shrimp Remoulade. While in New Orleans, my wife found this place and knew I'd like it. She said it was really nice food and I didn't have to be so dressed up... So, I took off my shirt and threw on my Metallica shirt. We found parking out front, by their sign that said "Warm Beer, Lousy Food, Poor Service"... This was my type of place. While waiting inside, an older man came up to me to talk about Metallica. Told me he saw them a bunch of times, especially in Mexico, and that all the members, except the drummer, come in there when in town... It was that moment, I thought is this the Chef/Owner? We joked, he told us we'd love the food, and eventually our table was ready. We started off with shrimp and alligator cheesecake. Wanted to try something unique and it was so great. Looked like cheesecake. My wife got crawfish etouffee and I went with fried chicken. Everything was great. Was the chicken the best I ever had? No, but it was really good. I just loved everything about this place and since it's a bit further away, I feel I'd be here all the time if I was a local. Former New Orleans resident and self proclaimed foodie here! Whenever I come back in town for a visit, or when people ask me for dining suggestions, Jacques-Imo's is always on the list. Can't beat the food or the vibes here. This past weekend, I did a little research to see if my favorite dish, the soft shell crab Godzilla, was on the menu (it's seasonal). It was indeed, and I headed over immediately after plopping my luggage down at the hotel. It's as good as always, and I immediately felt home. Busy? Yep. Noisy? Yep. Long streetcar ride? Yep. Worth it? Absolutely! We were there on a Wednesday evening and the wait time was over an hour for seating for two. They take reservations, but only for parties of five or more. Once we got seated at a neat little table near the front window, we started slavering over everything on the menu. Alligator and shrimp cheesecake? Amazingly good and interesting. But the piece de resistance was the Eggplant Pirogue - a whole peeled eggplant stuffed with shrimp, scallops, fish, mussels on the side, parmesan and who knows what else - it was outstanding. The atmosphere is festive - it's New Orleans - the service was cheerfully solicitous and wonderful, and we were happily stuffed when we left (with a carryout for lunch the next day too.) So first, no reservations which is kind of a sad panda situation but hey, they can command that kind of demand so good on them. Literally everything we put in our mouths was great. The corn bread they put on the table had a little spicy zip which was a great amuse bouche. Their gumbo was different but still good. (They put potato salad in it which was admittedly strange but still good). I ordered a potato crusted fish which was crunchy and light in an amazing sauce. One of my favorite spots in New Orleans, it's the coziest restaurant with amazing service. We tried the bbq shrimp, shrimp creole, venison, and rabbit pasta as main dishes and the alligator/shrimp cheesecake (it's not the sweet kind if you're wondering lol), jambalaya, and liver. No complaints about anything at all, it was all delicious. I was nervous some of the dishes were going to be spicy because my tolerance is pretty low, but everything was super mild. You get exactly what you ask for and what the name says here and it's done in the best way possible. Service is great, I loved our waitress but didn't get her name! She was super sweet and welcoming, would come back just for her. She also gave us a creme brulee and bread pudding and those were amazing also. My fiancé and I wished we found this sooner during our trip to New Orleans because we definitely would have returned for another dinner. A staff member at the B&B we were staying at suggested Jacque Imos and we couldn't have loved it more. After being in New Orleans all week and trying all kinds of restaurants, this was the best one we dined at! We got there & had about an hour wait. We put our name in & hopped over to the Maple Leaf Bar next door while we waited for our table. When we got seated, we walked through the kitchen which was neat so we got to see some food being prepared. We sat in the back dining room and just loved the whole vibe in this place. They were out of their venison entree which we wanted to try but our waiter apologized and sent us over a complimentary app which was the alligator cheesecake. We were going to try this anyways but it was a great way to start the meal. We loved everything we ate - the cheesecake, snails, crab stuffed shrimp, mussells and our entree that we shared. The server had the timing of all the food down so flawlessly - he would bring one app out as soon as we finished the last one. Beware - this is not a child friendly place. The "hostess/hater" stand is in the back of the bar. We waited for 45 minutes when we were told it would be a 30 minute wait. The seating for waiting is 3 feet from a loud bar - with our 8 year old. When they did seat us, it was in that bar in a corner. How dare I ask to be seated in the dining room. From then on we were passed over for a table because according the nasty hostess, "you should have taken that table!" Argumentative & obviously not hospitable to include the manager. Six of us went and all ordered something different. Tried a bit of all of that plus 2 appetizers. When one of the guys that had been here before mentioned it. I asked, what's good on the menu? If you want a ridiculously unique menu in a dive bar environment, look no further. Alligator cheesecake, fried rabbit, and a barrage of seafood with creole roots. The wait staff was extremely nice, providing details while navigating allergies, solid recommendations and friendly attitude. I had rabbit for the first time in a restaurant, country fried venison, and fried chicken. Everything I ate was cooked well and I would do it all over again. If you are going, know that the wait can get pretty long, on a weeknight, it was 45 mins. Also check out the prices, as they are steep, but everything on the menu is great. [Parking]: Street parking only and you will need to find a parking machine to enter license plate. Free parking after 7 PM or else the rate is $4 for a maximum total of 2 hours. Our party came at 6 PM and I was able to find a street parking spot just a block away from the café. [Waiting area]: The atmosphere for the waiting area is a dive bar setting. Our party checked in at 6 PM and was told the wait is approximately 85 minutes. I ended up getting a text at 70-minute mark. Reservations are available for parties of 5 or more up to one month in advance. Otherwise tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The restroom at the waiting area has to be one of the smallest unisex restrooms I have ever visited. [Menu]: Each entrée comes with a house spinach salad & choice of two side dishes (mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, corn maque choux, cole slaw, red beans & rice, potato salad, smothered cabbage, butter beans & rice, and shoestring French fries.) My friend said you are able to order ribeye steak off the menu and you will just need to ask the staff about it, but honestly my friend didn't read the menu in details because ribeye is listed on the menu. *** Complimentary garlic corn bread: A pretty decent starter. House spinach salad: One of the best salads I have had in recent years. Tender spinach + sesame based dressing (slightly sweet) = perfection. Came here for an early dinner on a Friday evening. They get pretty busy so I'd recommend coming at more of an off time if you're looking to avoid a wait. When looking into restaurants for my visit to New Orleans I immediately put this on the list to check out when I saw they offered a shrimp and alligator sausage cheesecake. I ordered the cheesecake and a bowl of gumbo for my meal. My server offered to have them come separately even though they're both off the appetizer menu, so I saved the cheesecake for "dessert". I thought the gumbo was great, super rich and the perfect size for an appetizer before a meal. The cheesecake was good, but quite different than I expected. It was much more like a Cajun mac and cheese casserole. It's probably better that it didn't truly resemble a cheesecake, but certainly less novel. Overall I don't think you'll come away disappointed with a meal here, but it stands out a bit less than I was expecting compared to similar options in the city. Particularly given my final cost was around $35 (with tax tip etc)for 2 appetizers. If you live here or are on an extended visit I think they're worth checking out, but not an absolute must. read more

In all of my trips to New Orleans I say "this will be the one trip that I try Jacques-Imos". Never happens. I am always staying in the Quarter and it is a 52 minute streetcar ride away on the St. Charles line. And BOY is that ride ever worth it! I finally made it there TOday! Do you like alligator cheesecake, duck & andoille gumbo, deep fried po boys, and coconut bread pudding? If any of these trigger saliva to be excreted from those taste buds of yours, the answer is a resounding YES, regarding whether or not you should make the trek up St. Charles to visit this place. Great atmosphere and great service. I will say today was very odd. It was unseasonably chilly in New Orleans (50some degrees) and unseasonably NOT crowded for the month leading up to Mardi Gras.
