I've been working right up the street from this place and passing it by for almost two years. Finally, lunchtime rolled around and we decided to give it a shot. We were actually heading to Genji, but when we saw it was closed, we detoured to Jade--and honestly, it was probably the best last-minute lunch decision I've made. This place completely blew me away. Truly authentic Chinese food. We ordered the dim sum shrimp appetizer, chicken fried rice, and pepper tenderloin. The tenderloin came in thick-cut pieces, and they definitely didn't skimp on the portion. The fried rice was light and fluffy with just the right hint of smokiness exactly how I like it. It was lunch time and the inside was quite spacious and fairly packed. You do also have to order from the QR. The service was good as they checked on us frequently. I'm so glad we discovered this spot. I will definitely be back for lunch or dinner with my family. It's truly a hidden gem.
I came here for a weekday lunch by myself, and it was super busy but the woman who seated me was still very kind and inviting. Their menus were on QR codes and you can order directly to the table which was nice. I was on a 1 hour lunch break and was able to get my food and get back to work in time, but my dishes did take a wait of 25 and 30 minutes. I ordered the scallop w shrimp dumplings and the Bayfungton shrimp dumplings, I enjoyed the latter more which were also slightly easier to eat because of the size and being closed off but the flavor was good on both. They had plenty of seating even though they were super busy. All in all, I'd go back, I had a good experience.
In town for a short business trip and we wanted some good Chinese food. The outside of this restaurant doesn't look like much but once inside it definitely feels authentic Chinese. The service is not so great. They seem to not care much about going out of their way for you. There were only a few tables occupied, but it took forever to get service and several times I had to get up to get more drink or to get utensils. Now the food was really good. We had sesame chicken and sweet-and-sour chicken and the fried rice. I was pretty impressed with that except the fried rice didn't have a lot of seasoning in it. Overall, a good experience, but the lack of good service brought down a couple stars and lack of seasoning on the fried rice.
Came here with hubs straight from San Jose Mineta (SJC) airport after a few days in the Midwest. Yes please to dim sum! Food came out fast. Ordering was easy with the QR code, except the cell signal isn't great so the menu took forever to fully load. If there was free WiFi, we didn't see a code for it, but we also didn't ask. Service is fine, but only at the beginning. If you need anything else, it takes multiple requests to multiple people. For example, an item we ordered hasn't arrived yet, even after we'd already received additional items we ordered after our initial order. We had to ask 3 different people and gave plenty of time in between each request before it finally came out. Of course, there were no apologies for its tardy arrival, but we didn't expect any. The teapot is huge-- love it! I'm a huge tea drinker and usually go through 2 or 3 of the standard sized pots. This one large pot was enough for me. Bigger than average teacups too :) We ordered; -Spicy XO pork chow mein: hardly spicy, best eaten fresh (seemed less flavorful as leftover) -Duck buns -- DOES NOT COME WITH DUCK. Only the buns, hun. Must order Duck separately (we got bbq pork instead and were not disappointed) -BBQ pork: not too fatty, very flavorful -shrimp egg pork siu mai: good, but I wish they had beef/pork instead -sesame balls: Wow. Different from all the other sesame balls we've had in many other places. Super soft, sweet but not too sweet. Just extra good -egg lava buns: we chose these over the egg custard buns and glad we did! Very sweet, which hubs loved. Would definitely get these again -soup dumplings; honestly, disappointing. Was not soupy! Also did not come with the black vinegar we're used to having with it. They offer a 3.5% discount if you pay with cash. Restrooms were fine, nothing fancy (and nothing gross!). On par with what you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant. It's super close to the airport, and easy to get on the freeway to return home to the east bay. This will be our regular eatery every time we fly into SJC!
Jade Cathay has wonderful, crave-able, authentic dim sum! This is our go-to place in San Jose for delicious Cantonese food. It's a unique building with cool decorative details, very spacious and great for groups. The wait staff is attentive and friendly, the food always comes out in a timely manner, the prices are very reasonable, and we always leave happy and satisfied. IMHO My girls wanted dim sum for dinner. While driving home, they researched for a Chinese restaurant that served dim sum all day. Found Jade Cathy, which is right next door to the House of Genji. There is an ample parking lot next door, with lots of signs warning you not to leave valuables in your car. At 5 p.m. the restaurant was fairly empty but by the time we left, had filled up a little more. You order via QR code and soon your meal arrives at the table. We ordered the BBQ Pork Rice Noodle Roll, $7, Deep Fried Taro Dumplings, $7, Tofu Skin Wraps Supreme, $9, Sticky Rice Wraps, $8, Braised Tofu, $15, Minced Beef Soup, $15, and Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet, $18. They also charge $2.30 for tea pp. I'm of the generation where tea was free! I wasn't hungry but wanted to treat my girls, but I did love the salt & pepper fish fillet. Soup was good but I felt it could use a tad more flavor. We packed up a lot of leftovers, and the kind waiter gave us some free sweet buns for dessert. Service was friendly and available. Yes, I'd definitely come back again!
Good spot if you want your dim sum fix and don't want to wait for long. Dined in around 11ish on a Sunday and no wait! More and more people came in throughout my meal, but no one had to wait. Some side tables have an iPad to view the menu and order from, but I had to scan a QR at the table. It was troublesome in the beginning since it was taking awhile for it to finally load on my phone. For anyone new at dim sum, it helps that they have pictures on the menu. Ordered some of the classics for a party of two: - Siu mai - Ha gao (shrimp dumpling) - Salt & pepper fish - Soy sauce chow mein (my only complaint would be that it was way too salty) - BBQ pork rice noodle rolls - Fried shrimp balls We enjoyed the food! Food came out at different times but still within a good time frame. Prices were okay, dim sum always adds up. It took some time to get one of the worker's attention when we needed something though. Decent sized restaurant, tables are well spread out from one another. Not much going on with interior decor and not fancy compared to other places, but it's clean. Parking is very convenient with an open big lot and street parking.
Final Thoughts: 3.71/5 There are about half a handful of restaurants who provide dim sum all day and this is one of them. While dim sum is known to be a morning/afternoon thing, morning times just don't work for our group. Our schedules simply don't align, so I'm very grateful for their decision to provide it all day. Food: 1. Shrimp Dumpling (Har Gow): 4.1/5 Classic choice for dim sum. The shrimp filling was lovely. Shrimps seemed plump, steamed to perfection, and had a nice texture when you bite down. The wrapper was not my favorite. Texture wise, very sticky and soft as if it wanted to melt away like a corn starch mixture. My preference leans more on a wrapper that holds its form, has some chewiness, and a resistance, but still soft. Flavor - Delightful. This one didn't need any soy sauce because the balance of flavors in the filling did it justice. 2. Shrimp Egg Pork Siu Mai: 4.4/5 My personal favorite was the siu mai. This one hasn't failed me anywhere yet. Texture wise - lovely. The crunch from the shrimp was quite nice. I enjoyed the ratios of shrimp to pork. Seasonings were nice, as well. Here, I'm tasting soy sauce, with some salt and sugar combined. Fish roe to garnish on top of each one for the enhanced umami flavor and color contrast aesthetics. 3. Steamed BBQ Pork Buns: 3.9/5 Very fluffy and soft dough. Ratio of filling to dough seemed optimal. There's an aroma to the dough that is missing from these buns. It's a sweet aroma with a hint of the flour and yeast scent. Kind of hard to explain. Flavor was average - Nicely seasoned with what seemed to be soy sauce, oyster sauce, and a hint of sesame oil. The color of the filling looked to be lacking some of the redness that I usually see with other buns. I'm actually not complaining with this one, but just an observation. 4. Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll: 3.7/5 The rice paper used to make this had a similar texture to the har gow. It was pretty soft, but not as sticky. Definitely held its form a lot better. Not too much of a bite or resistance to it. Ratio of shrimp to rice paper seemed optimal because of how thin the rice paper was. Flavor wise seemed a little bland to me. This was the case with rolls on the bottom layer too even though they were just absorbing all of the soy sauce. The shrimp was lightly seasoned with salt, but I felt like it needed something more. 5. Fried Shrimp Ball: 3.4/5 Hmm this one was your average shrimp ball with a crispy exterior from the eggroll wrappers. The size seemed smaller than ones that I am used to, but optimal for this dinner. Dipping sauce also seemed quite "average" - A little sweet, sour, and salty to enhance the flavor of the shrimp ball. 6. XO Sauce Stir-Fried Rice Rolls: 2.3/5 This dish needs to be paired with something because it was quite underwhelming when it came out. They're what you would expect, but I got tired of this dish after I took a picture of it because it looked like a bowl of dough. The XO sauce is truly the highlight of this dish. It's very umami with a nice balance of saltiness and sweetness. I can't pinpoint the exact flavor, but it seems like a mixture of oyster sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, and hints of seafood. This paired with the spiciness from the jalapenos were a nice touch. --------- Quality: Optimal Most items came out piping hot, which is ideal, but please do not scald your mouth like I did. Items like the har gow and siu mai are quite juicy. They are not skimping on the fillings and I appreciate the choice in using certain types of ingredients like the jumbo shrimp. Price: Expensive Six items for a total of $66. Average paid between 3 was $22. Not horrible, but not the best either considering a lot of the items were flour, dough, and some shrimp. Service: Fair to Optimal Quite fast service and very friendly. My one note is the order of how the foods were delivered. The Fried Rice Rolls came out last and it looked pretty underwhelming at that time soley due to what it was. I would have preferred for this to come out within a better timeline of my other food items, so that I could enjoy it together with an item that included a protein. Ambiance: Tranquil Quiet day in the restaurant today even for us going during rush hours. This may have been related to the rainy and cold weather that day. Somewhat drafty in the restaurant and that may likely be related to how open and spacious the interior is. Very nice and quiet dinner for us, so no complaints here. Location/Parking: Fair The restaurant is right next to the streets, so people drive by it and can easily find it. Not hidden anywhere and seems like an optimal spot. This is another location where I refuse to go alone (mostly at night). Again, it was raining that day, which made visibility a little bit more difficult. The lights were dimmed out, as well, so the parking didn't look like an ideal place to be at. There is a long stretch for this parking lot, so it doesn't seem like parking should be an issue for this area.
~4.5/5 I really do think the only thing bad about this place is their prices are on average about ~20-25% higher than the rest of the Bay. With that said, I think it's pretty fair. Things come out fresh/piping hot and many of the options don't skip on the fillings. All-day Dim Sum is a plus when I think there's only ~3 restaurants in San Jose-ish that do it. BBQ Pork Buns 4/5 - Realistically I just wish these were bigger as they are smaller than I'm used to. The ratio of filling is pretty perfect though, not too little, and the bun itself does not distract from the taste as some places make the bun too big to the point it gets a chore chewing flavorless bun. Fairly fluffy which is rare nowadays as well. Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll 5/5 - Giant shrimp inside, rice paper/noodle itself aren't overly doughy/chewy. Could definitely use more of the sweet soy sauce on it though if possible. Siu Mai & Har Gow 4/5 - Both came out very hot which is a good thing. You don't see the steam but if you're used to taking a piece and throwing it into your mouth instead of taking small bites you might want to reconsider. Shrimp Ball 3.5/5 - No down sides, but also nothing really special XO Noodles 2/5 - Kinda ok. Came out very late in the meal and was not hot or warm. It was also very soft and not as firm as expected from other places or even when compared to the rice noodle roll. Parking is okay, I appreciate all places that have their own lots, especially as Genji next door gets pretty crowded but the lot can be fairly dimly lit which makes it look a bit sketchy.
We came on a Sunday afternoon, and the place was crowded. It was good to see! We've been here for both dim sum and dinner time. Parking is plentiful, and they have a large lot shared amongst the 4-5 restaurants here. The service is very friendly, courteous, and attentive. The owners frequently visit each customer when they have a bit of time. Place your order via QR code. They have a bar, mostly hard liquor, beer, and wine only. Simple Chinese decor, clean but aged. Separate bathrooms each for men and women. The dim sum was good. My wife liked the bbq pork rice noodle. My mom and I liked the scallop shrimp dumpling. The deep-fried salted egg pumpkin was better than I thought. I personally don't care for the Salted egg, but my wife and mom love it!
Came here with my friend after picking her up from SJC and it was super close to the airport! The food is pretty good! We got a variety of typical dimsum items like rice noodle rolls, chicken feet, siu mai, and congee. We also tried the pumpkin with salted egg and it was pretty good! Kinda salty but as expected from the salty egg. It actually paired pretty nicely with the congee. Seems like it is also a pretty popular spot as there were a couple parties there when we were there, possibly some regulars. Not too crowded though. Pretty easy to order because you can either order from your phone via a QR code or one of the tablets if you're sitting by the wall I think. Parking lot

Like everyone else who has made a review, I think Jade Cathay is a great place to go to with a larger party or if you don't want to wait. My friends and I went on a Saturday at 10:30am and got seated immediately. The food here is pretty good. They have the assortment of dim sum, and it's very reasonable pricing. I would definitely recommend checking this spot out if you want dim sum without the hassle!!! read more
Jade Cathay located along a strip mall off of the VTA track in Downtown San Jose next to Genji Japanese restaurant offers dim sum but classic Chinese food cuisine. With, I believe, all menu items available most of the day, selecting them off of your phone via a QR code makes ordering fairly easy. The food selection is fair, the prices are OK, and the tastes aren't too bad. Not what I'm necessarily used to, but still reminiscent of the flavors I'm accustomed to. The service is nice and decently responsive. But I do have two main issues with Jade Cathay that makes this experience rather unpleasant. The Teas are $2.30 each person. This is quite steep. Other places don't charge this much, per person... do they? There is an extra service charge for Credit Card usage. I don't have a problem with this except you didn't tell me until I got my bill. It wasn't a small amount either, it was a hearty 3.84% of my bill. If you told me in advance and I chose to eat at your establishment, that's my choice. But you show it to me after I get my bill is quite a discouraging form of practice. The food really wasn't that bad, but the "hidden" fees really disappointments and discourages me from re-visiting this establishment. read more

Food was standard dim sum. Pretty busy during lunch. I like that you can order on the tablet. The price is a little expensive but I think every place has raised their prices recently. I ordered chicken feet, bbq pork rice roll, and pork and century egg porridge and I enjoyed all three dishes. Service can be slow or forgetful sometimes but they have a small staff. read more

Surprised that it wasn't crowded on this Saturday at noon, a week after Chinese New Years. My nephew reserved a table for 9 and he used their digital tablet and ordered all kinds of good stuff The food came out quickly, and everything looked and tasted great. There were no bad items! This was the first time I've seen fried siu mai on the menu, and they did not disappoint! We later ordered more of those. Service was fair. Had to ask for more water for our teapot although we left the lid askew for quite awhile. They closed out the tab once all the food arrived at the table, so later, when we asked for additional items, they made a separate invoice. And then they tried to bring us a third order of fried siu mai, and we had to have the bill readjusted. Oh well.... a little miscommunication, but I won't ding them for that. I'd come again. Prices are better than some of the dim sum places in Oakland and Alameda. read more
Arrived at this place on a Saturday afternoon around 1:45 pm and was glad to see a spacious parking lot in downtown San Jose! Large venue but not many diners dining when we walked in- great place for family gatherings and dates. The service was lacking since there wasn't much interaction from the servers other than food delivery, not even servers floating to check in on the quality of the food nor water refills. Yet, the food was somewhat of the saving grace. Green Scallion Pancakes: It was intended to be an appetizer before the big dishes, but this one arrived dead last from the kitchen... Weird timing but the flavors were crunchy, savory and hot. A staple that I always love to order. BBQ Pork Buns: Great bun to meat ratio! Shrimp Dumplings: Always delcious to have at dim-sum. Hot, juicy and savory! Custard Buns: Excellent dessert to end the meal. The buns were super soft in texture and the custard was sweet but not too sweet! Hot and Sour Soup: The broth was lacking in flavor; it tasted a bit watery but it did have the flavors of heat and sour. General Chicken: Great color on this dish and lots of chicken for portion quantity! The meat was tender and the flavor was a bit sweet and mostly savory. A very fancy dim sum place located in North SJ. It has its own private parking lot right next to the bus stop. COVID updates - QR menu & payment - masks & gloves all around - hand sanitizer available - tables are nicely spaced from each other Dim sum came quick, wait wasn't super long. Each order comes with 3-4 pieces of dim sum and is about $7-8/plate. It's a bit pricey, but food is absolutely delicious and bigger portioned than most places. The ones that came with sauce wasn't swimming so that's a plus. The XLB soup was very ginger and I loved it! Servers are attentive and friendly. I would definitely come back for more of the scallop dumpling! SUPER tasty! read more

I was a guest of my friend who has been coming for dim sum at the restaurant for more than 15 years. I understand that a new chef recently joined the family restaurant. We ordered the typical items for 5 people. Every item was delicious and freshly cooked. The fried chicken wings were perfectly fried just the right amount of batter and the meat was tasty, tender, and moist. The Cheung fun wrapped with prawns were also were fresh, huge, and moist. The fried tofu were perfect fried with a sprinkling of chopped garlic and jalapeños. The Char Sui buns, sponge cake, and taro bun were soft and freshly made. The pork/hundred year old egg congee had ample chunks in every bite. Overall, every dish was so delicious and freshly cooked. Staff was very attentive and responsive, especially when she noticed that one of our elderly guest appeared to need help with the tea. Staff courteously and respectfully helped her with the tea and stayed by momentarily to ensure that she could manage on her own. The restaurant has a traditional Chinese decor with generous spacing and low partitions between tables that allows ample privacy for the guests. I am planning bring my extended families for a larger family celebration because of the delicious food, spacious facilities, reasonable prices, and ample parking on site and street parking. Sorry no photos this time since I didn't have my phone handy but I can assure you that the food looked fabulous just as it was delicious. This restaurant is a hidden gem in a less frequented area of San Jose. it matches the cuisine in the more expensive fancy Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area. read more
Had such a long morning of calls and finally felt the hotel to get something to eat around 1:30pm. Jade Cathay is literally 2 lights away and I'll be able to have dim sum until 2:30pm. Scored, I thought. Arrived and parked in the front. Walked in and was seated right away. Only other tables were occupied. Scan the QR code on the table to get the menu. You order online and the food are brought to you. Wow, so high tech for an older looking restaurant. Prices are crazy high. Food was good and the steamed dim sum items melt in my mouth Prices are crazy high. 4 har how is $8 for example. Service was attentive and good Overall ok. Older looking restaurant, good Chinese food, high prices and good service. I'm debating if I would return. read more

Dim Sum served ALL DAY!! Finally, some quality dim sum in the South Bay! All of the dishes we got had sooo much flavor!! The deep fried items were the best we've had compared to other restaurants and of course I had to get my two favorite dishes - Chicken Feet and BBQ Pork Rice Noodle! This unassuming restaurant serves great quality authentic Chinese food at a good price. Plus they have all day dim sum!! I tried the honey walnut shrimp, garlic snow peas, and sticky rice. All of which exceeded my expectations. The service and quick and efficient, I was able to go in and out in a little over an hour! I love how they have a mobile menu with photos which helps people know what to order. read more
Needed to find a good Asian restaurant for dinner tonight and although the last few visit with Jade Cathay for dim sum weren't good, I decided to give them another go with family- style dinner. We entered and were the only ones in the restaurant, I seriously thought JC wasn't open for dinner. The 3 employees running the show were busy making dumplings and didn't even have the lights on. A lady quickly told us to grab a seat in the corner and flicked on the lights. A gentleman approached us and mentioned that the table may be too small and offered for us to move. The initial lady comes back and informs us that this table was too big and at this point I'm honestly over playing musical tables & chairs!! We move one more time due to the back door being left wide open and it simply being waaay too cold for my toddler. [[I should have taken that incident as a sign and ran for the exit]] Dinner consisted of: Fried Shrimp Ball Shrimp Dumpling Pork & Shrimp Dumpling Shrimp & Chive Pan Fried Dumpling Chinese Greens [gai lan] Salt & Pepper Shrimp Beef Tenderlon & Jade Tofu House Special Fried Rice & Seafood Chow Mein Dim sum items came out first and were a sopping mess. Very wet and items fell apart when they were picked up with our chopsticks. Rice and noodles were extremely bland. The beef was overly chewy and extremely hard to eat. The honorable dishes of the night happened to be the S&P shrimp and Chinese greens. On top of having a not so enjoyable meal, this restaurant is not covid safe as our party witnesses a male worker whom I'm assume is some sort of manager walking around without a mask and coughing out in the open air without covering his mouth. The restaurant also allowed 3 men to come in without any face coverings all while dining indoor. 1 star. This experience has left me wondering why I continuously give Jade Cathay the benefit of the doubt. Money NOT well spent and restaurant is NOT recommended, especially during this pandemic. read more

Surprisingly, this old place has good authentic dim sums and Chinese foods. First visit. We drove by a few times in over 20 years on North First Street & downtown in San Jose, but never stopped here. Old building. Huge parking lot with decent spaces at Gish Rd & First Street intersection. Hotels are up and down the street. Looks on outside can be deceiving. Inside is ran and operated by Cantonese-Chinese/Hong Kong folks. Good service. Spacious interior with bar area. Order from tables on table and they will bring everything immediately to your table. Quick service. Seamless experience. No lines or huge crowds on Sundays after 1 PM. Yes, expensive here, but all dim sums are luxury foods nowadays. There are better options out there, but this old place is also unique for folks who don't want to wait. It's definitely a new experience with the tablets on the table though, because you can order and pay instantly from your table without having to wave down the staffs. No hassles. Best siumai here. Hargow shrimp dumplings were plumped. Huge! They use a lot of rice flours here in ingredients, so you get a thicker rice flour coating. Same with shrimp rice rolls. Big fresh shrimps used! Radish cake had Chinese sausage pieces in it. Custard buns have very generous yellow custard in it. Only thing I disliked was the BBQ pork buns because those weren't freshly made and were frozen type. This is a great quiet place for quick bites. I liked it. Jade green color cups for hot tea were my favorites. Loved those jade green color cups and designs on each of them. No, they didn't charge extra for pot of good hot tea! Nice. Overall, good place. Not your typical huge fancy modern dim sum environment, and not huge dim sum selections available on menu, but the basics are here. Good tasting foods. Good staffing. Looks good for now. Near the Vta. We were wanting dim-sum and came here to satisfy our cravings. You order off the Qr code placed near the table. There were decent choices. Taste was just ok to be honest. The lady who took our drink order was nice. I will say the waiter messed up on our check, so please look over it before you pay. Probably wont comeback anytime soon read more

I called in to see if they serve dim sum all day. A man picked up the phone and kept saying hello three times and I responded back each time. He hinged up on me. I called again and a lady picked up and answered my questions. She was very pol I went here with 3 other people. We picked the seats near the kitchen and and staff let us know it's near the kitchen. We ordered fried shrimp balls, 2 har gow, 2 shu mai, chicken feet, tripe, rice wrapped shrimp, house special fried rice. The fried rice was really delicious. The dim sum was okay. Our bill came out to 98 dollars. I guess our servers mistook my crossing out for two items as items we wanted so I had them correct that. Service was good. One of my favorite dim sum restaurant in SJ and it's probably the best since I keep coming back here :) Recently ordered for pick-up to celebrate lunar new year with some dim sum. They have a website so it was easy to view their menu online and then call in the order. Ordered the usual items, ha gow, sui mai, pork buns, sesame balls, cheung fin, and added roasted pork and beef chow fun. They didn't have a few items but that's ok (I assume due to covid aka limited menu, so I understand). Everything was tasty and satisfying :) Everything was packed carefully in the takeout boxes too. It was only a 25min wait, which gave us plenty of time to drive over and pick up. I wish it wasn't the pandemic so I can dine-in. I have been here before the pandemic and remember the staff, especially the dim sum ladies are super friendly and the food comes by super quick. I'll definitely be returning for more dim sum and whenever it's safe again I'll come back to dine-in cause I miss the full dim sum experience. First time at this place. The general experience was good: service, food, cleanliness of the place, COVID19 restrictions. For me, to have 5 starts, they need bigger portions for every plate or be less expensive. I am aware that my options could intervene in my last point (I stuck to the dim sum section). Mandy was our very able waitstaff but she was also the daughter of the owner which made her more knowledgable. We had so much food and everything was fresh, served quick and clean. I think you should try it to believe it , Jade Cathay is real authentic, serving dimsum whole day too! Also, they will make vegan food for you as an extra service! Jade Cathay offers some of my family's favorite dim sum experience. All the classic dim sum options are great so whatever you are looking for is gonna be pretty legit. My favorites are the Shrimp Egg Pork Siu Mai, Beef Tripe Ginger Green Onion, Shrimp Dumpling, Steamed BBQ Pork Buns, Pan Fried Golden Chive Dumpling, and Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls. I miss the cart ladies, but these days they have a sophisticated online ordering system so you can guarantee to get what you want, so I like that! read more

Jade Cathay is very much a hidden chinese Dinsum place in downtown San jose. The exterior really need some work but the interior looks okay better than the exterior. Upon seatdown, we ordered the tea and a few Dinsum from the menu. I was a little surprise the prices are about 8 to 10 USD for each dimsum. Food taste and presentation are average and the word average summed up the whole experience. read more
2/07/21 Sundays are for Dim Sum and for almost a year now my beloved Asia Pearl has been closed. Today we went searching for an outdoor dining dim sum spot so we could eat hot, fresh dim sum. Enter Jade Cathay. They have about 10 - 12 tables set up in their parking lot and a limited dim sum menu. It was so refreshing to eat steaming hot dim sum. I missed this! We have taken out dim sum a few times over the past year but nothing beats eating it within minutes of coming out if the steamer. The service here was a bit slow and the QR code ordering was super delayed in comparison to the old fashion ordeing. We ordered the old fashion way and got our food right away while the couple that had arrived and ordered before us didn't get theirs until we were almost done. I heard them complaining about it. Definitely worth a visit if you're in northern San Jose and are in the mood for dim sum. There's plenty of parking in their adjacent parking lot. We were seated quickly on a Saturday morning and the waitress was incredibly kind and helpful! Ordering on your phone via QR code was easy, with fair prices and a good selection to choose from. The food arrived quickly and was very tasty! My favorites were the shrimp egg & pork siu mai, the egg lava buns, and the shrimp dumplings. The service was great and I'm overall satisfied with the experience. Happy to support a local family-operated business and would definitely come again. Got dim sum and few dinner items to go. Everything was pretty good. Particularly impressed with the take out packaging for the honey walnut shrimps. They packed the mayo on the side so that the shrimps wouldn't be soggy by the time it arrived home. But even without the mayo, the shrimps were incredibly tasty, plump, and juicy. Best honey walnut shrimp experience I can recall. The dim sum items were ok. The shrimp dumplings have a very chewy wrapper, but the shrimp was a little dry. The buns were soft but I wished the salted egg yolk bun was a little more salty. And everything else is pretty standard. Will still be at the top of my list when I want honey walnut shrimps though. read more

This is the first time ever ordering from this place, only because my boyfriend was craving dim sum. We did a online yelp order for pick up at 12:30PM. For the price, completely not worth it. MOST 4 piece orders were $8.00 and some were $10.00. Our total was a little over $100, including tax. This is probably the first and the last time I will ever be ordering from here again. Unless we want basic overpriced food, we won't be back. read more

This is a decent Dim Sum place in the San Jose area. My mom and I came here around 10:30 AM on a Sunday for some dim sum and to our surprise, we were the first ones in the restaurant! This restaurant isn't busy enough to do the push cart thing, which is a bummer because that's what I like the best about a dim sum experience. You can order on their QR code and they will bring your food out in a timely manner. Prices are a little steep for Dim Sum, but inflation is at an all time high so I understand. What we got: Har Gao, Siu Mai, Spare Ribs in Black Bean Sauce, Chive Dumplings, and Cheung Fun in XO Sauce. The good is good, not the best dim sum I've have but it does satisfy the dim sum craving. Don't go for dim sum. Dinner entrees are better. Service is bare and cold. Interior and furniture feel old and super ancient. Dim sum - Overall very greasy, heartburn-inducing, and not fresh. Fried shrimp balls - OK. I've had better at King Eggroll. Tasted old. Salt Pepper Fish Filet - Slightly chewy and stale. Stuffed Eggplant - Coated my entire food pipe with oil. Flavor was ok. XO Sauce stir-fried rice noodle rolls - Chewy, oily, and bouncy. Entrees Garlic broccoli - Much more luck here! Fluffy, comforting, healthy. Walnut shrimp - Always a hit. Average dim sum restaurant. Not overly pricey but it also depends on what you order. As an example, I tend to over order while having dim sum and during my last visit (party of 4) -- our bill came out to $160 after gratuity.
Is there usually a long wait to get a table for dim sum on weekends?
Yes, but it moves quick. They're pretty efficient in clearing their waitlist.
