Comparably good food with local ingredients in all cities. But at Jade Garden the dishes are prepared as good as those in the far East. I believe it is different from NYC Chinese restaurants. In my opinion better. The kind of sea food we have on the East Coast is also different from that of the West Coast therefore not available elsewhere. The dishes are decent, the service is quick and the food was OK. The best tasting dish was the lobster. Everything else was just OK. That Peking duck was served with tortillas! I don't care what they called it. Was supposed to be pancakes. I say they're tortillas! That part was a little disappointing. Otherwise the duck itself was good with the crispy skin and shrimp chips around it. We had lobster or was it crab soup to start. It was not very flavorful, for I had supplemented it with soy sauce. My wife and I discovered this place while drunkenly stumbling around Chinatown late night a few summers ago. My wife looked up and saw that beautiful yellow sign with a storefront surrounded by a giant pile of trash. We walked in and embarked on one of the greatest Chinese food journeys I have ever had in my life. I now make this my number one stop whenever I come to Boston because there's just no better feeling than ordering their famous pork fried rice, beef lo mein, honey walnut shrimp and crab wontons at 1 o'clock in the morning after partying in Boston. The service is what you'd come to expect. They get you what you need and let you have at it. I love this place to death. You will see all sorts of different people in here, especially late night. Let me preface this by saying that Chinese food is my least favorite cuisine but I still get it once a year. This year was on July 4th after my to-go orders at 3 other places were cancelled. Trying to play it safe, I ordered General Tso's chicken and beef and vegetable chow fun noodles. Big mistake! Everything was soaked in grease and after a few bites from each of the two dishes, I felt sick to my stomach. Portions were extremely generous but it didn't matter because it was inedible and had to be thrown away. In the four pieces of General Tso's chicken that I tried, I barely detected any meat. You served up a scrumptious meal that consisted of (1) Hong Kong Steak. Jade, will you marry me? This is the juiciest Hong Kong style steak I've ever had the pleasure to devour! Doused in some thick, mystical brown-soy-like sauce, tender as it can be, it was orgasmic to say at the very least. (2) Duck Tongue. Soft and tasty. (3) Ginger and scallion twin lobsters. Fresh and succulent. (4) Crispy Chicken: The skin was nice and crispy, the meat was moist. There were several more plates, all delectable, but quite standard as well. There have been two predecessor restaurants before it became Jade Garden. I remember it was called Golden Palace because my parents had a small wedding banquet there and they took me there when I was a little kid. I remember enjoying the food somewhat, and it was my first exposure to good Chinese food. It then became Big Fish, and I went there very often with my family to eat dinner when I was a student. We kept going there until it closed, and it has reopened pretty recently. Has the restaurant changed significantly since it reopened as Jade Garden? Well, somewhat, but the food is pretty good, almost as good compared to my eating experiences when the restaurant was called Big Fish. The first time I came to Jade Garden there was a group of almost 15 of us, including me. Here are some notable dishes that I remember my group ordering (we ordered about 8+ dishes, yet each of us paid about $7): Gon Chao Ngau Ho: Literally means "Dried-Fried Beef Chow Foon" (most accurate translation I can think of) in Cantonese Chinese, this is one of the most famous dishes in Cantonese cuisine, and one of the measuring sticks that I currently use to see if a Chinese restaurant is good, especially a Cantonese cuisine restaurant. Ju Yim Sin Yau: Ju Yim literally means "Hot pepper salt" in Cantonese Chinese, while Sin Yau means "calamari/squid". The calamari/squid is fried and is salty, and slightly spicy with some hot peppers. Yam Yeung Fan: Literally means "Yin Yang Rice" in Cantonese Chinese, this is a fried rice dish with a red tomato based sauce mixed with meat on one side, and a white sauce with shrimp and tiny vegetable pieces on the other. Reason why it is called Yin Yang is the dish is supposed to look like a Yin Yang or a Tai Ji Tu symbol. Ging Dou Gwat: Ging Dou is the Cantonese Chinese pronunciation of the Japanese city of Kyoto, while Gwat is a shortened form of Pai Gwat, literally meaning "pork chops" or "spare ribs". This is a tasty pork chop dish doused in a reddish or orangery sweet sauce, however, my uncle from Hong Kong says that it is an American Chinese cuisine dish. Hong Siu Ban Nam Bo: My favorite dish. This is not on the English menu, only on the Chinese menu. I don't really have an English name for this, however, it is one of my favorite dishes. Inside, there is fish, tofu, and some vegetables, braised in a brownish sauce and served in a large clay bowl, like a casserole. Hong Siu literally means "braised" in Cantonese Chinese, Ban Nam is a term used for "fish fillet" in Cantonese Chinese. The best dishes that I enjoyed the most were the Ju Yim Sin Yau, and of course, my personal favorite is the Hong Siu Ban Nam Bo. When I had the Ju Yim Sin Yau, it was pretty fresh, the calamari was not dry, and it was spiced and crispy on the outside, and soft, chewy, and delicious on the inside. The Hong Siu Ban Nam Bo was amazing, every part of the dish was incredibly tasty, although it might be greasy to your tastes though. As for the other dishes, the Gon Chao Ngau Ho was pretty tasty, and not a bad choice if you want something simple. The Yam Yeung Fan and the Ging Dou Gwat were pretty good as well, but saucy. So overall, the food is great, on par with my eating experiences when the restaurant was called Big Fish a few years ago. One great advantage that this restaurant has is that it is open until 2 AM seven days a week so this is not a bad choice after a night out in the city. This might sound unrelated, but another great advantage is that the restaurant has two giant flat screen plasma TVs and they can air English Premier League matches live, which is great if you are big fan of English Football (soccer). When I ate there on one Sunday afternoon, I was able to catch an Arsenal vs. Chelsea match live on the plasma TV, which looked awesome. I would definitely come back here again, and it is one of my top choices in getting my favorite Cantonese dish, which is of course, Hong Siu Ban Nam Bo. If you are a huge English Premier League fan, this is the only restaurant in Boston that I know that definitely has the capability to show English Premier League matches live... for now. read more

Service: Chinese waiters are efficient. At least the ones here are. I witnessed a party of 8 come in with no reservations. (Tip: Bad idea to come in with no reservations during peak hours for this restaurant because they do get very crowded on the weekends.) The waiters immediately started to set up a table for 10 (two guests randomly showed up, I guess) and within minutes these folks were seated. My family comes in with reservations all the time. Always seated immediately. (Of course.) If you don't have reservations, wait about 10-15 minutes. Also, if you're non-Asian, don't be intimidated and try not to be offended if they don't offer you exemplary service. (Tip: They will only give you tea unless you ask for water. And how do they know if you can't use chopsticks? Some non-Asians can use them, and these waiters are not going to ask you if you can. Need a fork? Ask. They're not mind readers.) You're not in a five-star restaurant. And truth be told, I'm sorry to say that them being passive is how other waiters in similar establishments are. If you're here for the food, good. If you're here for excellent service? You're better off going to one of those high-end Asian fusion places. Food: GET THE DEEP FRIED MILK APP. Order it because you're curious. Order it because you've tried it and love it. Just order it. Period. PEKING STYLE PORK CHOPS. Big plate. Lots of sauce. Makes excellent leftovers for lunch. Kids love the sauce with their rice. FRIED STUFFED TOFU. Small blocks of fried tofu with shrimp in the middle. Use the soy sauce. CRISPY FRIED CHICKEN. Okay, this one is a bit temperamental. Sometimes the skin is very crispy and the meat is extremely juicy. Other times, not so much. But it's still considered a popular dish and you can also order it elsewhere. (Tip: They include the chicken head if you order the whole chicken. Don't mind it. Or you can just have half the chicken for $12.) SEAFOOD COMBINATION SOUP: Try it with lots of vinegar. It warms you immediately on those wintry days. It's a bit bland but like I said, use vinegar. ^ That is pretty much our standard dishes. We have family dinners a few times a year and we usually end up at this place because of the food above. What? They're good. If you're non-Asian and you're a bit adventurous, stay away from the generic fried rice, lo mein and chicken and broccoli, whatever it is that you eat. Chances are, your usual Chinese place makes them better (that's why it's the place you usually go to?) and probably cheaper. The service was actually quite good. They completed all requests in a swift manner, no need to repeat ourselves. When we asked for shrimp sauce they were very accommodating and rushed a fresh batch. 1. We had dungeness crab with salty egg--- it was cooked to perfection. Jade Garden is a nightmare of animal cruelty. Live large fish, giant crabs and other sea life are crammed into small tanks with little room to move around. Also, on the menu is shark fin soup. Sharks have their fins cut off and they are thrown back in the ocean to die an agonizing death. Shark finning is banned in the U.S. and is rapidly depleting the world shark populations. I have reported Jade Garden to the local animal cruelty law enforcement. As for the food, it was bland and had strange greens my friends and I had never seen before. read more

I just got delivery of my 1/2 Pecking duck. The serving was less than 1/4 of the duck and they charged $23 for it. Look at the photos, they have cut the one leg in half, there were SIX (6) pieces of meat, and four pieces of skin which combined represent exactly 1/4 of the duck. I called the restaurant and the manager insisted that this is what half a duck is and that after they remove the bones, it only remains a small portion. Really? Why is the leg cut in half then? The container was just filled with the shrimp chips to the top and it barely had any pieces of duck. Was this baby chick duck? The insulting thing was that they included 6 large pancakes to eat the duck with. Put what, a teaspoon of duck as a tiny morsel? Look at the photos half duck. read more

I should begin this review by saying I don't like seafood. Yep -- I know, I'm a New Englander and that's weird. But it really skeeves me out. So when I enter a place that looks like the Aquarium section to PetSmart, I get a little uneasy. Still, my partner was hungry and I had already used my three vetoes on restaurant choice that evening. We were seated at a huge table and I noticed there was some pretty decent diversity within the restaurant. Why is this important you wonder? My theory is that it's a good sign when you're at an ethnic restaurant and you see people from that ethnicity eating it. It lends itself to credibility and authenticity. On the flip side, when you see lots of different people eating there, it's a good bet the place is accessible. In the case of Jade Garden that assessment wasn't unfounded. All the familiar items were on the menu along with a lot of unique dishes I had never seen before. Toward the back is a super-secret list of dishes with escalating prices that seemed to be some sort of combination menus. Since I can't read Cantonese, I guess I'll just live with the curiosity (but seriously, what could possibly cost $600)? I ordered beef lo mein and general gau. It came out fairly quickly (the waitstaff was pretty attentive). What more can I say except that it was some of the best general gau I've had in some time. Crispy and tender, sweet, spicy, succulent -- a home run. In addition to the scallions one normally finds, a rather unique ingredient made its way into the dish: jalapenos! While unexpected, it was a nice fit. The lo mein was that thin-noodle variety that seems to come from the best Chinese restaurants. The beef was tender and flavorful -- not at all fatty with a playful amount of ginger and not too overpowered by soy sauce (a common offense in lo mein). I can't wait to go back to the Jade Garden again to try some other dishes. It would seem I found my new Chinatown go-to restaurant. read more

Jade Garden finally brings good Canto style food back to Boston C'town! My family had my mom's 60th birthday party here. We had over 40 guests at 4 tables. The staff was fantastic in helping us set up the surprise party. They have birthday celebration music to play on cue too. Everyone was very pleased with the food and service. I was very impressed with the appetizer platter, even with the pig intestines. They were so good and crispy. The razor clam and shallot dish was probably my favorite dish of the night. We also had their famous chicken, which didn't blow me away, but it's pretty dang good. Then there was the honey walnut shrimp which was tasty, but a little on the heavy side with the sauce. We also had an abalone and greens dish, dungeness crab with scallions and ginger, a seafood soup, a tasty fresh steamed whole fish, fried rice, a duck feet dish, and I know I'm missing a couple dishes. The noodles came last, but were super impressive actually with perfect flavoring - not too saucy with a great texture. We had purchased a cake from Eldo, which the staff brought out to the birthday song, and then cut it up and served it to our guests. They also had date paste buns that were really pretty served up for everyone, followed finally with a sweet red bean soup. The place was also clean and nicely lit. The two flat screen tv's were kind of weird, but I guess it helped add a bit of family in the living room ambiance. Overall, the surprise party was a great success due in great part to the accommodating staff and management and the great food! The cost was also very reasonable. Considering that we had 12 courses at 4 tables, which included soda and beer for guests... the total tab of $1,500 (including tax and tip) was quite a deal at about $35/person. read more

Picked up some Jade Garden carry-out the other night, and have to say that I wasn't terribly impressed. The phone ordering process was super easy, and I appreciated the fact that their menu is available online. They even told me m food would be ready for pick-up in 15- 20 minutes which is fast and completely acceptable. So after placing my order and arriving at Jade Garden, I walked in and waited in the lobby are a few minutes for my order. This gave me plenty of time to observe the fish and other sea creatures in the tanks at the front of the restaurant. While the fact they are there and swimming around would be a great freshness indicator, the fact that some fish were sort of lying on their side and breathing slowly did not inspire confidence. (It took some close examination to determine they were in fact not dead.) I completed my transaction and took my food home, still with great anticipation, as I'd not ordered any fish. Here's the verdict on the 4 dishes I *did* order: Boneless Spareribs: Good flavor, totally chewy, about 1/3 of each piece inedible do to excessive chewiness to the point where it couldn't even be consumed. Scallion Pancakes: Decent flavor, but super crispy. I've had scallion pancakes a number of times and usually there is some thickness to them, and they can be cut with a fork and have some softness to them. These had no "meat" at all, and were fried to the point where you just had to crunch through them. Shrimp and Pork Rice Noodles in Cantonese Style: This was the meal highlight. Super tasty, great flavor, textures mixed perfectly together. I loved the freshness of the scallions mixed in with the perfectly cooked noodles. Crispy Roast Duck Half: At my first take, I was incredibly happy with the flavor. Yes it was greasy, but sooooo delicious. However, after that first lick of flavor, I found the rest of the dish absolutely impossible to consume. I expected fat and bones in the dish, but this was so overwhelmed with fat and bones, and the grease was so permeating, that only about 10% of each bite was even salvageable to be consumed. Not a ratio that I'm satisfied with. And after that first bite, if felt so heavy and laden with grease, I felt like I'd be sick if I continued to consume it. Sometimes they get overwhelmed but for lunch nobody beats the Garden. Dinner is pricey but if you like seafood they do a great job. And it's always packed. The service is not bad by Chinatown standards. The boss is really nice but the boss lady has an attitude. You still have to be nice to her or you won't get served. We came for a big dinner filling two round tables. We had 11 adults and 7 kids and 1 baby. The menu was chosen about a week ago. Each table had similar dishes with some personalization. Our table had fresh shrimp from the tank in front, seafood in taro nest, frog legs in clay pot, seafood soup, roast duck with taro, twin lobster in ginger and scallion sauce over yi mian noodles, fried whole fish, steak and Chinese broccoli, roast chicken, and shrimp fried rice. There was sweet soup, cake from local shop, and fresh steamed bread to celebrate the birthday. We had lots of food to take home. Service was very good. Discloser: I know the owner personally. But, I have no incentive. Jade Garden is an interesting place. The owner knows they are competing against surrounding restaurants, and the owner said "but that place is dark, dirty and dingy" - he prefers clean, bright sunny looking place and Jade Garden definitely is so. Food is, actually pretty good. I'm a big fun of Peach Tree (practically next door), but I think Peach Tree is officially in down hill. (A few times, Peach Tree surprised me by serving a great Ma Po Tofu.) Jade Garden is supposed to be seafood place, and if you ask they can do sashimi scallops on bed of ice - for a chinese restaurant, it's quite amazing. (I'm Japanese). Spicy calamari is excellent. If you look around, many Chinese families ordering a whole fish or lobster. Great sign. Other staples, like fried rice is excellent. I've been there 3, 4 times so far, and one time, I was with 15 other friends, and they all complimented fried rice and ended up ordering the same fried rice again. Beef dishes come out tender. Shrimp in fried tofu - comes out boiling hot, be careful to chill down - is crispy outside, and soft/tender inside. Every dish is above average and skill of chef clearly shows. Appetizer soup was wonderful - good yumminess and no MSG taste!. Unlike many other Chinese restaurant, they know how to do subtle taste, bringing out fish or shellfish taste, which is very rare. Jade Garden passes as Peach Tree replacement for me, and I am glad. Jade Garden is as good as any other seafood restaurant, handily beats most restaurants in China Town, and in Boston area, only place I like better than here is Schezuan Groumet in Billecca (and sadly admit that JG beats my home town Great Wok). read more

Boiled fresh shrimp: a standard dish, executed well 22$/lb Doumiao: my standard vegetable order, also executed well 15$ Yimian: huge amount of rather bland noodles. Complaining brought us it seasoned a little better, but it was still dull dull dull 7$ Dungeness crab: soooo good. A super big crab! 40$ Scallop: good, served with some vermicelli and a lot of garlic 6$/ea Free bowl of dessert soup, which was nice! The spicy fries squid is Ah-mazing! We used to get this all the time at another restaurant that sadly closed. This place has the same dish and it is JUST as delicious. I love this place!!! read more

Meh. I had a great scallion pancake, and though that my meal would be equally wonderful. Nope- the two entrees that we got were disappointing. I wouldn't go back. read more
