Me and a friend were really hungry and wanted to find food near while we were hanging out... we first saw this burger place but realized it was a order at a window and sit down type of place. I wanted to have the dining .. be served experience, so across the street we see this restaurant and decided to give it a go. The prices are a bit high but we wanted to try something new. The food is okay. Sausage is very very salty. The ranch is not great , watery , they should invest on better quality ranch. The meat on my burger was juice and well seasoned. I would have given this place 4 stars but I did not because of the service. Our waiter was cold and didn't give us the attention that we were hoping for. I asked for more time to look through the menu and he left and when he came back he didn't even ask if I was ready .. he just started taking my friends order. The restaurant was not busy at all. I let it go because I don't know what he might be going through. But then it got worst , he never checked up on us, I wanted mayo. Never offered me a refill or more napkins.. And never asked how everything was. Just left the check and picked it up and that's it. Super cold. My friend at one point said she felt that it might be because of how we look. I won't be coming back here. If you want to try their food I suggest pick up, but if you want a high quality serving experience while out with friends. This is not the place. Update I forgot to mention: my friend ordered a BBQ plate that was aupose to come with a corn muffin. She got a blueberry muffin, she didn't want to say anything . Went for early dinner. We split the full slab of beef ribs. I wasn't really impressed. Not a lot of meat on the bone. I felt the ribs were drowned in sauce. So all I tasted was the sauce. Not sure if their ribs are actually smoked either. I saw no smoke ring on the ribs that had some meat on them. Don't think I'd eat here again. The service was excellent. The staff is very attentive. After driving 400 miles, I wanted to take my mother put for a (pre) Mother's day dinner. I was craving meat, she likes the occasional bbq restaurant, so there ya go. The setting is covered in peanut shells. I like this rustic feeling, but I suppose be careful if you have an allergy. Now then, onto the meal.... I ordered the pulled pork, with corn on the cob and a baked potato for sides. The pork was juicy, and the sauce had a spicy kick...not too strong, but left a nice zing in your throat. The corn was good and tasted fresh. Minor complaint was that the potato was undercooked. I am still recommending a strong 4 rating, as my mother stated the ribs tasted of true bbq, not simply oven baked ribs with sauce, and she blatantly said she would come back here. The first time I had dine here for breakfast and it was delicious! This is my second time dining here for dinner and the BBQ was tasty. However, the beef rib was super chewy and tough, and the BBQ sauce drenched all over the meats was a bit of a sweet and tangy overkill. Met up with some Yelpers and here's what I got: Complimentary Peanut Bucket at each table. You can toss the peanut shells on the floor, cool! While the peanuts are tasty, remember to not fill up on those, lol! Drink: Two glasses of $3.05 HI-C Pink Lemonade, which was sweet and fantastic! It helped balanced out the overkill on the BBQ sauce. Entree: $34.95 Phat Mike's Combo + 2 sides of your choice and a blueberry cornbread muffin. The meats consisted of: A). Sliced Tri-Tips: Good, yet slightly chewly. B). 1 Hot Link Sausage: Delicious! Meaty, long, large and had a little spicy kick to it. When it comes to all the meats on the plate, this + the 1/2 Smoked Chicken + Pork Rib were my Top 3 favorites! C). 1/2 Smoked Chicken: My #1 favorite item! Our server recommended the chicken because a new batch was recently done when we got there. I ended up taking this home for dinner the following night. After scraping away a lot of the BBQ sauce and it ended up tasting so much better! Tender, juicy and omg, soooo freaking good!!! D). 1 Pork Rib: The meat was tender, meaty and fell off the bone easily! E). 1 Beef Rib: Took this home with the Pork Rib and it was my 3rd dinner. Huge rib, but gawd, awful! Complete opposite of the Pork Rib. The meat was seriously stuck to the bone and it took a while to get it off. I tried with my teeth first and almost felt like my teeth was gonna chip. Afterwards, I had to saw it off with a steak knife to finally get it off the bone. My absolute least favorite meat! F). 2 Sides: Mac & Cheese & Baked Potato: Super carb happy, hehe!!! The Mac & Cheese was fabulous! Creamy, cheesy and plentiful. The shells were nicely cooked and hearty. Comfort food happiness! As for the Baked Potato, it was topped with butter and sour cream, yum! I ate some of it and took the rest home to eat with the 1/2 Smoked Chicken. E). 1 Blueberry Cornbread Muffin: I took this home for dinner the following night and it was so good! Still soft and moist after reheating it. The cornbread consistency was firm and flavorful. The blueberries inside added a nice and sweet fruity touch to it. A yummy treat to end the meal with! Service: The two male servers assisting us that night were nice and friendly. They got our orders down and a few minutes later, our meals had all arrived. They refilled our drinks again and got us doggie bags to take home our leftovers. Overall, it was finally great to have dinner here as well as reunite with some old Yelp friends and finally getting to meet some new Yelp friends in person. Haven't eaten here in awhile and was wanting zucchini. The food was just ok. Our sandwiches didn't have enough bbq sauce and yes we could have asked for more but trying to get help was hard. All employees seemed to be more interested in a party that came in and kept stopping to talk to them. We asked for more ranch and was brought a small serving which was not nearly enough for the zucchini we ordered. We asked for a regular Coke to go and they brought diet. I tried eating some peanuts and throwing the shells on the floor like everyone else, but in my head I couldn't shake off my mom yelling at me for making a mess, so I stopped that quick. Pretty neat, though. I tried the smoked chicken for $14.95, which came with 2 sides and a corn muffin. The sauce and chicken were great. I chose mac and cheese and a baked potato for my sides. The mac and cheese wasn't that cheesy or flavorful, but it could have been worse. At least the texture of it was nice. For some reason, BBQ beans were brought out instead of a baked potato, but the guy who took our order was nice when I pointed out the mistake. He brought out the baked potato and I ended up getting the beans for a free side. Later, I looked at the food order that came with the receipt which said baked/mac for sides, so it wasn't that I was misheard or had misordered. My friend ordered the chicken strips for $12.95. They actually forgot to bring him a corn muffin but we weren't sure if his meal really did come with it so we didn't ask. (Turns out it should have.) The chicken strips were interesting; they were fried in an almost tempura-like batter. Without the ranch dipping sauce, though, they were flavorless. The texture was great. I had a GREAT experience at Jakes! The ambiance was what you would like in a bbq roadhouse. Laid back attitude with licensed plates on the wall and funny signs. The bathrooms were large bright and well kept. Your hands get sticky eating good bbq so you gotta wash up. The menu is extensive and included all day breakfast, yeah! The portions are large and all the food was tasty! Even had some leftovers. That's important to me because my family of 6 and I are all athletes and we're BIG EATERS! We had Alti as our waitress and she was AWESOME. Polite sweet kind and very attentive. She explained several menu items patiently and was always on time with the refills. This place is definitely lacking customer service. Wanted to try their bbq for lunch. We arrived a little before noon and were given the breakfast menu without options. We settled for the breakfast menu and put our orders in. Meanwhile the table next to us was being served lunch (what we originally came for). When we asked the waiter if we can change our order to lunch, he made it difficult and uncomfortable for us! Not once was I askes if I want refill on my drink! The food was average. We went for lunch about 2 weeks ago and had an absolutely rude server and will NEVER go back. There were 3 of us and my certified service dog. The server wouldn't get within 6 feet of our table which was in the back away from any other diners. It was pretty empty in there. Turns out she was afraid of dogs and when we asked for water for him ( she said she would give us a Styrofoam container and we can go outside. It was 100 degrees and he's a golden retriever, hardly an aggressive mean dog. From then on she was extremely rude and when I received my brisket sandwich it hardly had any meat on it. The other person in our party had the same thing and had twice as much meat on it. The food was subpar and not reasonably priced. read more

I've been to this spot twice now (once for brunch and once for dinner) and I must say I like it. It's chill and the servers are nice. There was a short wait to be seated for brunch but no wait for dinner on a Friday night. While both meals were good, I would definitely recommend the brunch here. I just had the tri tip and pulled pork sliders delivered thru grub hub. First of all, they label them as jumbo...they're not jumbo at all. The flavor was excellent but a little dry. Next time can you guys actually put some sauce on it instead of just a teaspoon? I always order the baked beans hoping that I will Like them more than the last time. I didn't. PEANUT ALLERGY WARNING: Every table comes with a complimentary bucket of peanuts in shells. The peanuts are eaten with the shells being tossed onto the floor afterward. I find that really unsanitary. Mixed with the peanut shells is old food that's fallen on the floor because they're not sweeping up those shells. I don't know how often the restaurant gets swept because we show up pretty much when the place opens and there are always shells all over the floor. A full stack of pancakes also cost me $11.45. Four pancakes. That's it. It didn't include any sides or proteins; there was nothing wow about it. At that price, I expected to be impressed by it. I wasn't. I'm talking about the Lemon Raspberry Pancakes. It was topped with a little bit of butter (which looked like it had some blended up raspberries in it), powdered sugar, a small handful of fresh raspberries and some raspberry syrup on the side. It seems like a popular dish and it wasn't bad, however it wasn't "$11.45 for four pancakes great" either. I only ate one and took the rest home. I tried their Egg White Omelette as well and that was very underwhelming in flavor. The ambience feels very welcoming and service is topnotch. Everyone there is super friendly and very attentive. I don't know if it's because we only go for early breakfast and it isn't busy or what but they're really on top of refills and asking you how things are tasting, if you need anything, etc. It's super kitschy and really casual. This review has been a long time coming, and I have visited this location many times to attest to the high quality standard for service and food. I usually come here for brunch with the girls on Saturday mornings, and each time I am always pleased with the dishes I order. I have had everything from the Lemon Raspberry Pancakes, French Toast, Bacon to the deliciously slathered BBQ ribs, so my knowledge of this eatery is pretty broad! Can I just say, the pancakes are the fluffiest I've eaten, and the bacon so thick, crisp and flavorful. The french toast just melts in your mouth, and the accompanying fruit is fresh any time of the year! Although this place is famous for it's barbeque, their breakfast is also award-winning worthy! The decor is very vintage Americana (think Route 66!) Very classic, stylish and laidback. It's the perfect place to bring any vintage or car buff. There is seating both inside and outside. Usually we sit inside, but it's also nice and relaxing to sit outside and enjoy the cozy little town that is Monrovia, California. Every time I go to Jakes, I am always super pleased with the service and staff. They make you feel invited and part of the Jake's family! A lot of their patrons are regulars, so that goes to show how much of a friendly atmosphere you'll find at Jake's Roadhouse, and the AMAZING food is an added bonus! I also hear there is an exciting addition coming to Jake's; they will be expanding to the space next door to create a room for a bar. How awesome is that? You will definitely find me there on weekends. There is always ample parking to be found in the area. Old Town Monrovia has a lot of parking lots behind the building which range from 3 to 8 hr FREE parking. I love BBQ, but didn't get a chance to try the burgers here. One night, I was driving all over the place trying to find a different place to try but really really want BBQ. I don't want to pour BBQ sauce on just anything at home so I stumbled upon this place. I quickly made a U-turn (not advisable in this neighborhood) and found a parking spot nearby. Of course I ordered something with ribs and there was a dish with chicken. I seldom order chicken anywhere and I was ok with the chicken. My complaint is usually to dry because each place is trying not to serve salmonella. I definitely like the ribs, that's a given when it's done right. Then followed by sides and fries, I kept dipping it in the BBQ sauce. My thoughts are the BBQ was definitely tasty but what the hell is going on with the prices with BBQ food? The price just keeps going up and up and up. I don't remember ordering a drink but probably root beer but I do remember it wasn't under $10. Closer to $20 just for myself. After visiting Jackie's grandmother's grave site at Rose Hills in Whittier, to finally see her newly placed headstone, it was time to find lunch somewhere. Pulling off of the 210 due to traffic congestion, I started searching Yelp for nearby restaurants (Jackie was driving). And being in Monrovia, I spied Jake's Roadhouse, an American & Barbecue joint with a 4 star rating. That settled it for us. The interior looks like a mini Barney's Beanery; I've never been there but have seen it highlighted on the Food Channel on several occasions. There was a bucket of peanuts at every table and peanut shells all across the floor. The service was reasonably friendly and we settled on sharing a slab of BBQ Beef Ribs. Jackie chose the Mac & Cheese and Mixed Veggies as her two sides, while I had Mac & Cheese and Corn on the Cob as my two choices. A Cornbread Muffin each was also included. Our expectations were soon dispelled though... Here Is Our Take On Our Meal: BBQ BEEF RIBS: Although I was given 4 ribs and Jackie 3 from the slab, I managed to eat 3 of them with only 1 of mine being extremely tough and chewy. However, after struggling with 2 of her ribs, Jackie was very dissatisfied. We both had 1 rib left over and we'll see what our youngest son thinks of them. 3 Stars MAC & CHEESE: While I found them to be acceptable, Jackie thought the pasta could have been much better seasoned. 3 Stars MIXED VEGETABLES: Frozen and nothing much to speak of. 2 Stars CORN ON THE COB: Frozen as well. 2.5 Stars CORNBREAD MUFFIN: Just Okay. 3 Stars COMPLIMENTARY BUCKET OF PEANUTS: Probably the best thing going for this place during our visit. 4 Stars How they ever received a 4 star rating is beyond me. It's obviously clear that they don't know how to properly prepare beef ribs, and should either cease and desist or learn how to smoke them before just throwing them on the grill. And yes, they probably do much better business with their pork ribs, but for those of us that don't eat pork don't offer them if you don't know how to prepare them properly. We came with high hopes, but left totally dissatisfied. Oh, and when the female server did stop to ask how we were doing? My wife responded with "the ribs are very tough". Her only reply? When coming home from Los Angeles, I like to get part of the drive out of the way and try new places in the foothill communities along then 210. This time it was Jake's and it didn't disappoint. I was brought coffee immediately and my breakfast came quickly. I got the lemon raspberry pancakes. The pancakes have a light lemon flavor and they're topped with some fresh raspberries and you get a container of warm raspberry sauce. The pancakes were very good. Service was excellent. My coffee cup was refilled several times. This was a great stop for breakfast on my way back to Las Vegas. read more

Ribs (Baby back & Beef)- Not bad, but not that great either = 2.5 Stars I had a gift certificate for Jake's so thought I'd finally use it. Monrovia doesn't have many choices for BBQ so Jake's has that to its advantage. I noticed that they're open on holidays, like Memorial Day and the 4th of July so that's good. Peanuts - Yes throw the shells on the floor, over your shoulder or at each other! Beef Ribs - although they look big with a lot of meat on them, they were really tough! My husband had a hard time eating them. Baby back ribs - the meat didn't fall off the bones at all. Actually it was as if the meat was hanging on for dear life. It's like you have to scrape your teeth against that bone to get any off. Argh, so annoying. I couldn't taste much of the BBQ sauce on it and I could taste a little burnt flavor. I didn't want to eat anymore and left 2 of my half rack (which my husband had to finish for me.) BBQ Beans - Just OK, they had a little bit of BBQ meat inside but other than that they didn't have much flavor. I just had a small spoonful and that was it for me. Cole Slaw - Nothing Special French Fries - Tasted Fresh and homemade. They had a little bit of skin on them. Cornbread Muffin - Dry, dry dry.... I broke mine in half and it wasn't really appealing and I ate 2 tiny pieces and just set it aside. Not sure if they bake them here, taste old and storebought. Half rack of Beef Ribs + Half rack of Baby Back Ribs + 2 drinks = $46.85 (I'm glad I had my gift certificate!) Service - Just OK, there were times when we needed stuff and our server wasn't around. When we were ready to pay, we waited so long, I just told my husband to get up and take it up to them. Honestly, I don't think we'll be back here again unless it were for breakfast or if I come with a group who wanted to eat here.
