I am absolutely not a sushi expert. I either like it or I like it a lot. Jaku Sushi falls in the category of I LOVE IT! We've been to Jaku North and were curious to see if this location was as good. Except for a smaller size restaurant, the two were identical in quality and enjoyment. We started our meal off with Gyoza. Dumplings were perfectly prepared and not over cooked. What I think may be unusual about this item is that it contains both pork and chicken. Great flavors! We then ordered spicy tuna rolls and Tiger rolls from the House Roll menu. Simply put, these rolls were probably the best we've had since our last Japan visit. I usually use a lot of wasabi because I just love wasabi. After one roll I greatly reduced my wasabi use to allow the wonderful flavors to come through more clearly. Jaku's menu reminds me of a "Wall of Bourbon" you see in many bars. But the food... that's where it lost me. The Mango Tango roll was a stunner to look at, but once I dug in, it was drowning in sauce. I like my sushi fresh and bright--not hidden under a saucy slip 'n slide. Not bad but not showcasing what I was there for. The orange ceviche also showed up looking gorgeous, but one bite and I felt like I'd just chugged seawater. The saltiness was off the charts. My blood pressure is still elevated. The first time we went here was on valentine's day! The atmosphere was great and because it was so busy this day, the people watching was great! so uplifting and lively in this restaurant. We got a mixture of foods to try and it was all great! We had lots to bring home after (I love left overs! ... who doesn't!?) and it still tasted so good the next day. Had the bulgogi roll, and shu mai dumplings, orange ceviche And cucumber rolls. The cucumber rolls tasted so fresh and light. I would use the word delicate to describe the shu mai and ceviche too. The roll came with dipping sauce but really didn't need anything extra. It did kind of fall apart at the end but just at the rest with chopsticks. Im inclined to believe all their dishes are great. Upon entering the restaurant, it was slightly smaller than I expected. The interior was designed in a very modern way and had a nice aesthetic to it. We first ordered the salmon poke appetizer. The presentation was nice, it came with rice and slices of avocado, topped with sesame seeds. The poke sauce was very very good. Unfortunately, the salmon was very fishy so it was a disappointment. I ordered the tuna combo while the other person ordered the tonkatsu bento. We also ordered a yellowpeno roll to share between the two of us. The tuna combo came with a miso soup, 5 tuna nigiri, and a tuna roll. The miso soup was good. The tuna roll caught me by surprise, it was better than the nigiri. It was chopped up finely but you could tell that there weren't fillers in it. It had a slight spice to it, which I enjoyed. The tuna nigiri was also similar to the salmon poke, it was quite fishy. It was quite unfortunate because I thought that a place with the name "sushi" in it would have better quality fish. Maybe it was just a bad day when I went. I tried a little bit of the tonkatsu bento and it was tasty! It came with tempura shrimp and vegetables. The tempura had a very light yet crisp batter to it, and it wasn't oily. The tonkatsu was fried perfectly. Overall, a pretty good dish. The yellowpeno roll that we shared was definitely spicy and had a hint of sourness. The fish and ingredients were fresh but I wasn't a huge fan of the flavor combination. The total came to about $90 for two people. It was definitely on the higher end so I wish that I had better fish quality for my nigiri and poke. Overall, this restaurant didn't have the WOW factor to me. My family loves Jaku...when you can get a table. We lucked out and got in before the dinner rush. South location by M-6 and Kalamazoo is super small. The North location on East Beltline has a little more seating. Our server was attentive and our food came out rather quickly. I loved the reusable Chopstick Helper that made it fun and easy for my daughter. Love the udon - great flavor, perfectly cooked noodles, and a yummy soft boiled egg that's slightly runny. Shrimp shumai stuck together, but gives you the shrimp taste you're looking for. The spicy tuna roll is okay. Everyone loved the California roll. We placed a huge takeout order for 8 people that ended up being $300 after the tip. We ordered everything from sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, rice dishes, and Bibimbap. It was nice of the restaurant to call us right after we placed the online order to let us know that it would take longer than the standard time the website provides, which we expected. We walked in and our whole order was taking up an entire table. They basically just pointed and said it was ours. The restaurant is very tiny, but it takes advantage of that with its calm, clean environment. The employees are nice and helpful, and service overall is fast for sushi. We love going to Jaku, since it's near our condo in Kentwood. The inside is small, but cozy. There is a couple of outdoor tables for seating, and they have an active carry out business. Servers are friendly, and open to questions about the menu. The food comes quick and the hot dishes, are hot. My favorite is Dolsot Bibimbap and my wife likes the beef bulgaldi. There is usually enough to take home for another meal. We top it off sharing the fried mochi. read more

Highly satisfactory visit. Came in for a Monday lunch and was greeted and seated immediately. Ordered 4 sushi rolls, Agedashi tofu, and a tempura udon. The Iceland volcano roll was the most delicious on its own. The seared salmon scent could be detected even before it reached the table. The other 3 rolls were good, but I'd try other ones with my next visits. The Tempura Udon was delicious, but felt still hungry after eating just this. The noodle quantity could be increased a little in my opinion. Agedashi tofu was good, but I expected the outside to be a bit more crispy. It is fried, but when it got to the table even the dry (not touching the sauce at the bottom) parts were not crispy at all. The mushrooms were delicious in it. Prices of rolls seemed to be averagely priced for sushi resteraunts with special rolls being around $13 each. Waitress was attentive and we were in and out with no problem. I have been having big cravings for sushi throughout the stay at home order. Lucky for me, Jaku South was there to rescue me from another meal at home. Their to-go experience was seamless with online ordering. Once I arrived in the parking lot, a quick phone call resulted in a masked & gloved employee hustling out to my car with my order. The rolls were securely packaged and survived the drive home in my cooler very well. I ordered one of my favorites, the Icelandic volcano and one "new to me" fire crunch roll. The Icelandic is one I keep on repeat because I like the contrast of cool cucumber, spicy salmon, and sweet sauce on top... who doesn't like sweet & heat? It was a fantastic experience. It is pricey but I think the food and experience justify the price. Normally, I'm fine with this Jaku Sushi; but today I'm rather disappointed with them. Due to miscommunication, my husband and I both placed an order; and he picked up his order while we only realized our mistake when he got home. I called the restaurant to explain and cancel my order, but they would not cancel it. We could have been awful and just not get it, but we still went out again to pay and get the second order. Ends up they got my order wrong anyways - I got a tempura roll instead of tempura. There is nothing wrong with how they handled the situation but on a personal level, I feel that they were not very understanding and accommodating of an honest unintentional mistake. This is the first time this has happened in the several years we've been in this area and have been ordering from them. There is nothing wrong with their food and their usual service, but it really leaves a bad taste for me personally. So I decided I will not order from this restaurant in the future. read more
