Had to see what all the hype was about this place so I came to check it while I was in GR this past weekend. Nothing but the bomb at Jaku, this place is straight up righteous! The goods are so good and I would be eating here on the regular if I lived in GR still. Located in the strip mall area near East Kentwood high school Jaku is just simply an amazing place to eat sushi. Fresh and flavorful are two words that come to mind when I think back to my first dining experience here. We started off with Kosho tempura which was a spot on appetizer. Deep fried jalapeno with cream cheese and tuna! Wow! Don't be afraid this app is not hot but rather just a subtle heat that plays well with the cream cheese and sauce. I was impressed and ready to move on to the main course. We ordered four rolls and each was solid. Nothing missing here and the fish was so fresh and tasted so good! The spicy California was a favorite. Such a basic roll but layered with flavor and some of the freshest crab I've had to date in a sushi roll. Almond Joy roll was my next favorite. Delicately layered with flavor and nice complex ingredients that all made for amazing bites. Also ordered the crunch munch II and that was as astoundingly great as the last two. Another slamming roll was the one of a kind Michigan roll. Deep fried and oozing with crunch and flavor. Jaku is a hidden gem and I'm excited they will be opening a second location a little closer to Grand Rapids. No matter though this place is well worth the drive. Best sushi I've had in the greater Grand Rapids area in some time. read more

I want to give it five stars, but the add ons (tobiko and eel sauce) get pricy, also the sauces are served in the side which is kind of clunky, I'm not sure if it won't hold up if you put it in the middle, but I sure wish they'd try. Jaku was very good. The Gainsesville location does not serve alcohol fyi. The Gainesville location is small as well...i think mayne seating for 20-25 people in the dining room. Our food was very good...we had the tuna poke appetizer, garnished with.creamy avocado and serves with a few fried wontons. The poke itself was as good as I have had anywhere. I had the Iceland volcano roll as an entree and added a hamachi roll w scallions as an add on. Both were very good, the hamachi was fresh, I am sure- and it was fatty and buttery, maybe the best hamachi I have had anywhere. The Iceland roll had kani and avocadp and sake in it...with fried sweet potato strings and eels sauce. It was delicious, beautifully presented and a good value at 15 dollars. My daughter had the charred salmon roll. It was dynamite....I would order it next time I visit. Our server was really great....very attentive. Drink refills were prompt, table maintenance was awesome and she was very engaging and friendly. This was my first visit to Jaku in Gainesville...the only disappointment was no sake or beer available. Sushi is meant to be consumed with a little Sapporo beer or Sake. Hands down, the best sushi rolls around GR! I love eating sushi and have tried couple sushi places but nothing compares to Jaku. (Not even the places I've tried in SF!) I love, LOVE their Iceland volcano. In fact, I almost always ordered Iceland volcano, up until I found my second fav, the angels roll. What I like about Iceland volcano is that you get the char on the torched salmon+the fattyness/rich salmon taste, along with the yam crisps, some sort of mayo (?), and soy sauce. Great balance in terms of the texture (soft/crispy) and taste (sweet/salty). Runners up is the angel rolls! The whole roll is wrapped with spring roll wrappers. Inside are avocado, imitation crab, and cucumber (if I remembered correctly). Topped with sweet wasabi and light soy sauce. The sort of chewy texture of the wrapper plus soy sauce add to the overall eating experience. Sweet wasabi really brings together all the flavors in the roll. Not spicy at all! I was so excited to hear that Haru Sushi served sushi burritos. There was a decent amount of burritos to choose from and the portion was generous for the price. I think it was called the Haru Roll which included bulbogi in it. The flavor was great. They cut their rolls in pretty big pieces. This restaurant was located in a strip mall near Panera and Applebees. It's a very small restaurant which fits about 40 people. Interior is very modern and clean. Price wise it's a tad more expensive, but the food was delicious. We ordered two spicy tuna handrolls with fried shrimp tempura - very good! Dol sot bibimbop - ample amount of meat, veg and egg. Presentation of meal was excellent and you get a side of gochuchang sauce. Tip: leave rice in bowl for a few minutes to get extra crispy rice. This was $15....tad bit more expensive than Korean restaurants I have visited. I would definitely have it again. Only negative was our server - he never seem to be around. We needed an additional spoon or refills on our drinks and we had to wave him down. He did apologized for it. The beef asparagus roll is absolutely delicious (even my mom who doesn't like sushi at all liked it) and it was defiantly the star of the show! Oh, and it's HUGE. The rolls are filling which makes is SO worth the price! I have been to multiple places where they don't roll it well enough or they're just sparse but Jaku does not skimp! I have been back 2 times within a 2 week span since I've dined in and both over the phone and online orders I made included all of my special requests! Waiting for the main attraction. Alright! The salmon combo was as fresh as we've had in the Midwest, as were the shrimp. The volcano II roll was spicy and fresh. Love the sushi burritos here. The presentation here is superb on both their burritos and desserts. The burrito contents were well proportioned, good sized, perfectly flavored and a good price. No need for extra sauce unless you really want more flavor. If only they had a wasabi sauce though, then it'd really be perfect. The Umi and Crunch Munch are our favorites. The desserts here look awesome but taste OK. Careful when digging down into the Coffee Cheesecake or else you'll get a spoonful of paper along with your oreo dirt and rock candy. I am sorry that I wrote such a bad review in the past. I was frustrated about an experience I had, but I feel that I was too harsh at that time. I sat down to dinner and wiped my nose with a napkin that had someone else's chewed gum in it. When I complained wait staff was kinda like, eh sorry. I felt it was a gross incident and I deserved at least a free beverage or appetizer instead of an apathetic shrug. But I am over it, and their food has kept me coming back. Jaku doesn't serve booze, but their sushi and sushi burritos are delicious and fresh. I love hibachi here, especially the beef, which has a Korean style marinade that is super tasty. Chicken is good too! I am also a big fan of their fried rich and I get shrimp fried rice here pretty often. The shrimp are always fresh and not overcooked. They also have the best agadashi tofu ever. Yum. I want it right now! The environment is a little cramped and can feel chaotic, and the seating is uncomfortable but their service has improved hugely; I have noticed that the last few times I've gone in. What a gem! I finally made my way over to Caledonia to try out Jaku. My friend and I walked in Thursday for lunch. It was busy, but was able to get a table right away. I love the decor inside. It is modern, white and clean looking with some pops of color in the lighting fixtures and the cute pillows laying along the bench seating, that hugs the right side of the wall. Service was wonderful - our server was very friendly and would be ecstatic to have her as a server again. We were in sort of a hurry (friend needed to be to the airport) so we didn't do any starters. I ordered the Apple Roll (seasonal) which came with a little apple salad too. It was an awesome combination of flavors. Items you don't normally see in a sushi roll, but it worked really well together. The salmon that was laying on top of the roll was torched which was a fun smokey element to add to the roll. I would recommend the Apple Roll to anyone and Jaku to grab some sushi. I need to check out their sushi burrito next time! read more

Had the opportunity to work and eat here. So take it from me when I say that the food is great. Worked here in the summer of '16 and my experience was great. Brought and recommended many friends here. The fish is great and if you have the chance, the sushi burritos are to die for. They have a wide variety of food not just sushi, so make sure to try the dolsot bibimbap, the udon, and the tempura ice cream. The servers are very friendly and so are the sushi chefs. Jaku is small, quaint, well-decorated and very modern sushi/Asian fusion (specifically Korean and Japanese fare) restaurant, the type of Asian dining I've been longing for since moving back to Grand Rapids from Ann Arbor, which has a much heavier Korean population and a lot of restaurants like this one. So in the sense that I've been nostalgic for this type of Asian fusion cuisine, I truly was satisfied by my first visit here. There are many more items on their menu I want to try in the future, but I rarely get out to that end of the city. During my first visit, I went ahead and tried out their vegetarian sushi options and opted for three of their vegetarian tempura rolls (one avocado, one sweet potato, and another asparagus), as well as two tamago (sweet scrambled egg) nigiris. They were all large, filling and quite delicious. I wasn't wild about the overly sweet teriyaki sauce they slathered on top of these rolls, but it wasn't a big deal. All three of the veg tempura rolls I had were fantastic, as were the nigiris. Also, Ivvery much enjoyed the excellent presentation (the traditional wooden geta plates definitely reminded me of various times eating out when I lived in Japan), and i also really enjoyed the very modern, minimalistic ambience of this small space. The aesthetics were truly Asian, which I actually have found to be atypical for most "Asian" restaurants Grand Rapids. The one small problem I ran into was in ordering their nikojume appetizer. The only description of this item was "deep -fried mushroom with cream cheese" but it came with some kind of seafood mixed in, which wasn't a big deal, but I was forced to send it back, as I didn't realize it wasn't vegetarian. Not a big deal, I just really feel bad wasting food that way because of menu misunderstandings. I just wish their menu was more explicit with their descriptions or had some kind of symbols or denotations of which items were meatless (without meat INCLUDING seafood). And even though I don't rate on service, i must mention that my server was almost entirely non-attentive and was annoyed when I sent the nikojume back, which irked me a bit. I definitely hope to get a different server next time. Could have been a perfect 5, but Jaku isn't totally vegetarian-friendly, as their menu is a bit hard to navigate. And if I did rate based on food AND service, I would have given them a 3 because of the aloof, shitty-attitude waiter I got stuck with. I definitely will return to try their other veg items though, so this review is subject to change! read more

"I said where is our order?" The girl picked up our ticket and I heard her say to the chefs "they're here". Then she told me it will be 10 minutes. 15 minutes later 6:25 pm we had our food and r were on our way. They did give us a free $6 salad. Wow. 2 people X 25 minutes with $6??!!?? Came here for the sushi burritos and we weren't disappointed! We tried the Bulgogi and the Diablo burritos and both were very good. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and was attentive and pleasant. If you like sushi and wanna try something a little different I would recommend you try Jaku! read more
