If you want to experience what authentic doenjang (bean paste) soup tastes like, this is the spot for you. This is the closest I've experienced to what I've had in Korea. Their doenjang tastes more fermented than others and the depth of flavor is intense. I would describe it as lighter than cheonggukjang but more pungent than doenjang soups from other Ktown restaurants. I went the traditional route with the anchovy option and was very satisfied. FYI there are chunks of anchovy pieces in the soup so I'd opt for something else if that bothers you. We also got the squid stir fry lunch special and it was one of the best versions we've had of this dish. The smoky flavors hit your nose and palate, and cooked to the right chewy texture. Another thing we were impressed with was the quality and cook of their rice. It was cooked to a plump and firm texture, where you could really appreciate each individual grain. Brownies points for their attention to detail! This is a fairly small restaurant that offers free parking. It's right across from Hannah Chain so easy to spot. Highly recommend!

Amazing food and amazing service! The food is very fresh and authentic and one of the best 됀장찌개 I've had in America. The owners are super nice too:) highly recommend

    Kim chee soup with beef

I went to this restaurant in Koreatown to try their kimchee soup with beef, along with other side dishes. It was 16 bucks. The owners explained what to do with the dish and how to eat it with the other food. They even gave me free fish, which I admired and appreciated very much. Great food and great service! Very welcoming!

My local friend recommended this restaurant. We ordered spicy pork and spicy squid with lettuce wraps. My son wanted bulgogi but they ran out so she said we should get the spicy pork and it wouldn't be too spicy for my son. Unfortunately it was a little too spicy for him. The spicy squid was really tasty and was perfect with the lettuce wraps.

I ordered 3 lunch special. Spicy pork with Ssam/ spicy stirred squares/ some fish I tried to fish square and found 3 pieces. I wasted my money and time. NO different situation on pork. I have never experienced such a trash side dishes. I paid $50 to get stress.

We drove by Jang An for almost two years and had never noticed it. Until recently, they finally put up an English menu in the front. A true mom and pop store - limited menu offering options I don't often/have never seen in other korean restaurants. It did appear they specialize in grilled fish. But we were attracted to something more soupy - Soy bean soup for me and spicy pollock soup for husband. I wasn't quite sure what soy bean soup meant but I assumed it had to be something close to tofu soup. Unfortunately I was only semi correct - the soy bean = leftover soy remnant/scrap from blending and squeezing out all the milky content. Only the gritty content was used in my soup. It was bland and felt like eating spoonful of sand. There entire bowl was filled to the brim of just that. Sorry dear stomach, but at least I tried? My husband's spicy pollock soup came with essentially an entire fish. Very generous in portion - the fish cooked well. my husband however thought the broth could be a bit thicker and used more spice. Overall - Not bad! But if I had compare all the mom and pop restaurants in the area, wooree and 88 win. 3.5 stars

Today I ordered the food from jang an restaurant.. but I found the hair while I eating !!! DISGUSTING !!!

Best Korean food I've had in LA. Jangan is definitely a hidden gem with its authentic Korean recipes, homey ambiance, and very accommodating service. I appreciate the quality of all the food we ordered but their Kimchi Jjigae has to be my personal favorite! Can't wait to come back for more.

Wanted to try something new and found this very unassuming restaurant. It's located in a very empty plaza, so there's plenty of parking and the interior restaurant is very small. There's a total of 7 tables and one very attentive server. He's serving, bussing tables, preparing take out orders, and still had time to refill my tea. The food came out very quickly and the flavors were a bit bland for me which is why I docked a star. Despite the size of the restaurant, there's people coming in all the time, mostly for takeout. I would consider coming back and try something else. Maybe the spicy pork here wasn't for me.

The best Korean comfort food. This is my go to whenever I need a my Korean fix. I highly recommend their brisket bean paste soup and spicy squid.

This place is a hidden gem! Never even knew this place existed until my friends brought me here for a quick lunch. Honestly, so surprised it's not more popular with how good the Doenjang Jjigae is. I also love how homey this place feels, as if it were a restaurant run by my mom. The place is pretty small, so maybe it's a good thing it's not that well known. Otherwise there would be a line out the door just to get seated. Despite the small space, my party of 3 got seated right away around lunch time on a Saturday. This place doesn't skimp on the side dishes and they'll happily refill anything you request. Can't wait to visit again!

I'm a pretty adventuresome eater but the place smelled like puke. Time to go.

What seemed like a deceptively simple bowl was one of the most delicious and flavorful meals I've had - I'll be thinking about my bowl for a long time. I got the plain kalgaksu, mainly because it included pork potstickers. The anchovy broth isn't fishy (which I was concerned about), it's deep and full in a way that's hard to describe. It penetrates the noodles and potatoes well. The broth is similar if not the same between most bowl types. The cold noodles were also delicious, which a couple of my friends ordered. Quite large portions, as just about everyone had to take some home. They also have bibimbap if you're craving a rice based meal instead. I can't wait to come back - maybe not on a Saturday night next time so I don't have to look so long for parking!

I really wanted authentic Korean food that was not kbbq and not tofu and this place delivered! This restaurant is in a small strip mall. The strip mall has other Korean food options. They have a valet parking system of sorts but we didn't pay, we self parked. The attendant told us we were fine. It was approx 9pm when we arrived and also a week night. I have no idea how much valet parking is here. We were a small party of two. Upon arrival, we were notified they were out of RICE. Um..what?? That's a good problem (for them to have) but not for consumers. I feel this really limited our options to just soup. I honestly didn't want soup but there wasn't much else we could order. The bowls were large and came out piping hot. It was a satisfying meal and not too heavy. The price point was on the pricey side. Our waiter told us business has not been the same post covid. Some dishes are between $40-$60. I asked for a soup and they were able to make it less spicy. My friend got a soup with dumplings in it. He put a good amount of soy sauce to give the broth some life. Also, the banchan is on point. We asked for a refill and devoured the second portions. If you wanna impress friends with Korean food, bring them here! Its a casual place.

If you're searching for some of the city's best pork, then those in the know will bring up Ham Ji Park. For 2 decades, generous platters of pork ribs and pork neck stew decked every table. Now, our Korean friends lament the loss of their favorite pork joint in the city. The Koreatown proper location is located in the Royal Plaza mini-mall, just a few blocks off bustling Wilshire. Discounted parking is available in a lot across the street from the Chevron gas station. From the street, the entrance is flanked by potted plants and an enclosed street-ery. Inside, stainless steel chairs are pressed up against wooden tables, each outfitted with a metal grill. Oppressive fluorescent lighting shines down on the stone grey walls, which are left undecorated apart from a few flatscreens. Multi-lingual chatter blends with the sizzle of platters. I visited with some friends for a weeknight dinner, and about half of the tables were occupied. We shared a spread of grilled platters and sizzling soups. The meal began with a carafe of barley tea and a mostly standard spread of banchan. Across our food, the best dish was the signature Charbroiled Pork Spare Rib. The ribs were flavorful without feeling gamey, and the meat was complemented by sweet caramelized onions. The pork ribs handily outdid the good-not-great Charbroiled Beef Short Rib. Lastly, the Milt and Cod Rose with Vegetables stew was fishy and briny, appropriately flavored for the Korean palate. The service was appropriately attentive, although I would've appreciated more intentional refills of our banchan ramikens. The rib plates cost upward of $35 each, while the soup was just under $30. The portions were hearty; a single entree platter could reasonably feed 2 moderately hungry bellies. It's a shame to hear that Ham Ji Park has closed; I'm kicking myself for not trying their pork neck stew earlier.
