I was at the Jang Dok Dae Restaurant last week. I ate soonda and potato soup. It was very delicious. Many people said it was very good. They have great food at this restaurant. It is one of the best Korean places that I've been to. Also, it is the only one I found that makes good food and has good service. The dishes are delicious. Big portions for a very good price. One of my favorite local Korean spots, known for noodle soups but really featuring many of the basic korean dishes - KalGookSoo [=knife cut noodles] in chicken, myulchee [=anchovy], seafood, or red bean broth. $7-8 - SooJaeBee, flat slivers of dough in the same broths listed above. $7-8 - random list of BoonSheek [=poor people's food] ranging from DdukPokki [spicy rice cakes], JjeeGae [strong-flavored stews], Ssam [=wraps], mandoos [dumplings], and variety of beef or chicken soups - Korean special pancakes, I remember a HaeMool [=seafood], PooChoo [=leek] and potato version - special family portion dishes of steamed pork cabbage wrap OR spicy chicken stewed dish, I think small $20 and large $30 - k-BBQ dishes of bulgogi, spicy pork, and LA ribs Most dishes are less than $10 [price on wall includes tax], but they do have some BBQ meats & 2-ppl dishes for a bit more. There are a handful of lunch portioned dishes for $6-7,, as well. Love the variety, yet all the dishes are well done. Once you order your food, they serve this barley rice with YulMoo kimchee [=spicy pickled stem] and YangNyum Dwenjjang [=seasoned bean paste]. At home, bigger portion of this would make a happy dinner. The utensils and napkins are all on the table. The service done with with a Korean AhJoomama [=lady] smile. The side dishes are modest and unpretentious. Oh, and they serve barley tea! I would say there are 12 tables that sit 4 each. Lunch gets busy right at 12pm, and dinner is a hit or miss. Lots of people order take-out. There's a tv constantly broadcasting a korean channel. Give anything that interests you a try! But my favorites are the MyulChee KalGookSoo [=anchovy broth knife cut noodles], which is topped with julienne green onions, white onions, zucchini, & chunky potato. Must pair with an order of PooChooJun [=leek pancake]. My grandmother prefers the SooJaeBee version, which are flat slivers of the same noodle dough. Upon entering this joint for lunch I felt completely out of place & intimidated. There was a line out the door for starters and I am very tanned & clearly not Korean. I felt very intimidated by the tons of ajummas & ajusis (sorry for the butchered spelling) that patronized this place. But the friendly, energetic waitress that worked here in the yellow apron took away my apprehension! She was very kind and friendly and QUIIICK. They don't play games here at Jang Dok Dae. The food here is pretty damn tasty. I ordered the lunch special kimchi jigae because I'm basic and wanted to play it safe. I was pleasantly surprised with the freshness and tastiness of the soup. It is very spicy and very hot but this combo gave me a free facial. The friendly waitress kept giving me napkins because she peeped the beads of sweat pouring from my face. It was $7.99 which is such a great price for the quantity and quality of the food. One of my new favorite restaurants ever. read more

Okay, I NEVER give Korean restaurants 5 stars. I've been eating Korean food all my life so nothing really surprises me. It all starts tasting the same, nothing special. Maybe 'cause it's been a long time since I had some good Korean food (Korean food isn't that good around my area) or maybe it is just really that good, but I loved everything here. My parents and some extended family came here to eat have lunch with my grandma. The restaurant is pretty small but luckily we only had 6 people so seating wasn't a problem. The decor is simple and has tantalizing pictures of their food. Waitress was really nice to us and gave lots of suggestions. First off, they give you barley rice, or rather barley cooked to be like rice? Anyways it's barley with some light spicy pickled vegetable that I don't know the name of. But it's good stuff. Then, the Ban Chan (small side dishes) was really good! The radish kimchi and cabbage kimchi were both flavorful and fresh, not fermented. They gave duk bok ki (spicy rice cakes) as a side dish too! O_O That's a first for me! It was delicious and really nice. Even the simple spinach and bean sprouts had good flavor. They have really cheap lunch specials. $5.99 or $6.99 which is pretty freaking cheap. I got the Dak KalGukSu (Chicken Noodle soup) which was in the $6.99. For those of you who aren't into very authentic Korean food or it's your first time trying Korean food, give this a try. It's a freaking huge bowl! The noodles are house made (huge plus for me) with a nice bite. The broth tastes like chicken and is simple and clean. And yay no bones to fish around. I don't know, it was SO SIMPLE, but so good, love dishes like that! DolSot Bibimbap (Rice with veggies in a stone pot) is also on the $6.99 Lunch Special so for all you bibimpab lovers, go during lunch! Korean food revolves heavily around soups. We got a (FREE) bowl of CheongGukJang (this extra fermented soy bean soup) because my mom was thinking about trying it but the waitress just gave it to us! It has a VERY VERY strong flavor and smell but it was very good. It's got a nice kick to it. Heh I don't particularly suggest it right away if you're new to Korean food...but if you're adventurous go for it, but I warned you. The DwenJangChigae, also a fermented soy bean soup but much less potent, was a touch salty but if eaten with rice it's all good! It also has great strong flavor which I never get at Korean restaurants, definitely a higher concentration of the soybean paste which is nice 'cause it means they don't water it down. They even gave us lettuce to eat with our DaeJiGoGi (Spicy pork) which they said is from their garden. It definitely seemed like it, it was very small lettuce leaves, not like the crazy huge ones you get at Korean BBQ places. It was really nice of them. Then we looked down again at the ban chan and thought maybe the radishes were home grown too since they were so tiny. PHEWW, I have NEVER given a Korean restaurant quite a review. But overall the food was great, just everything was good. I took ALL the BanChan home because it was all so good and am now enjoying it as I'm typing this review! I was beyond thrilled to finally be able to try this place after hearing so many good things. First of all, the food was amazing. We ordered the Bossam and Bibimguksu. They were so generous with the portions and pretty much everything comes with a side of stew, so order a couple things and you end up with a whole table of delectable dishes. Secondly, the service was great. They make you feel like you're family / as if you're a regular. They have a friendly/warm environment that you don't experience at many places. My family does seem to like Korean food - A LOT! Our usual Hot Tofu place was so packed we followed the daughter's bookmark right to this spot. A little hole-in-the wall-ish as far as location, but oh boy! Korean PUNCH YOUR FACE and love it goodness. The lady who served our table was very good at recommending dishes. And after ordering the Beef (Yukgaejang) hot pot and Bossam (braised pork), she told us that was plenty for three! She was so spot on - we got to take home nearly half of it home as leftovers. (These were both family style, and are available on a scaled down, good for one lunch version) Unlimited and delicious banchan - the usual acorn jelly, bean sprouts, delicious kimchee.That shrimp paste is a sure contender for stinkiest good food ever - salty and fishy goodness. Served with your choice of white or brown rice with barley. The beef hot pot (Yukgaejang) is seriously the most hearty, comforting, reminds you of your mom or grandma's best -for-a-rainy-day kind of soup. Bony goodness which you have to gnaw on, best reason for napkins at the table. Bossam (braised and sliced pork boneless belly) is served on a platter with more braised or blanched napa cabbage two ways (spicy or plain) and slivers of jalapeno and garlic. So being a Korean who grew up from small country town in Korea where there's waves of ricefields, I remember some good Korean with a lot of fresh ingredients cooked by the friendly neighbors. This might sound too crazy, but I thought this place reminded me of my childhood. (Don't judge me. I ain't copying the Ratatouille movie story) It's a small and popular place among fairly older Korean folks. Groups bigger than 4 might have to wait a while during lunch or dinner time. (BTW they close from 3-5PM) Get the fish dish (braised cutlass fish in gochujang aka Galchi Jorim) or chung gook jang (bean paste stew) The fish dish is full of flavor and I believe it's one of their best. I'm not a big of fish person especially in spicy sauce but this one is LEGIT. Sauce isn't too spicy. However, it could take up to 30 min so if you can speak Korean or have a good Korean friend, call them ahead. Also if you order this, Kimchi stew or bean paste stew will be provided (with less veggies unfortunately) Chunggookjang is a stinky dish... even not many Koreans don't like it. Me however loves it. Out of all the tofu places and other koreans restaurants I've been to, this place has the best taste I think. They could put some more ingredients... But the taste is good. I thought their Korean pancake was pretty good and a lot of veggies seem fresh. Service isn't bad but if you are not used to the Asian restaurant service, you might have some hard time here too. :P Overall, I love this place and I love coming here. The question is, "Why do the ajumma's (middle-aged Korean ladies) seem to ignore you and provide sub-par service just because you don't speak Korean or are not Korean?" Since i'm Asian, I could maybe pass for Korean, but I clearly do not speak the language nor do I even know simple phrases. So, when it comes to ordering, I'm clueless. I'm always asking questions about what ingredients the dishes contain, what level of spicy-ness a certain food items is, and what dish is most popular or recommended. But I feel like I don't get the same quality of service nor the attentiveness that Korean speakers or Koreans receive at these restaurants. Food: Samgyetang: Whole young chicken stuffed with ginseng, sticky rice, jujubes and garlic ... Ladies!! It was that time of the month for me, so I wanted something that was warm, not too heavy, and easy on my stomach since I was still suffering through cramps. The chicken was really nice. The flavor was like a rice porridge with meat. Not as flavorful like a chicken soup. Beware! There are about 8 whole cloves of garlic in the soup. Dolsat Bibimbap: Stone pot bibimbap. Typical flavor and ingredients with an egg on top. Nothing unusual. No surprises. Banchan: Interesting about this place is that as soon as you order, they bring out green mustard/collard like greens with a small side of brown rice. This is brought out before the usual array of banchans about 6 dishes: potatoes, kimchee cabbage, kimchee cucumber, bean sprouts, tofu slices marinated in soy suce, and greens. The food is always good here. Everything I've tried so far has tasted delicious. The main woman who works there is outgoing and makes you feel at home. They give you some barley rice, bean paste, and some spicy greens to start you off. The have a good variety of prices - some specials for 5.99, 7.99, 8.99 and more. Even if you get a 5.99 lunch special the portions are big and the food is tasty (Chungukjang, kongbiji were good). For the summer, the konguksu is bomb. Can get crowded during busy hours! read more

The banchan is fresh and the waitress seems to enjoy her job and remembers customers faces. They serve different noodle dishes and even a red bean soup with noodles. They have korean dumplings and soojebe They also have spicy cod called eundaegu jorim which is good too. I always try to eat here when I visit the area in my opinion it's one of the best in Cerritos. I got the seafood soup and some (extremely spicy) stew. The soup was really good. I went with my friend and we're both Cantonese, so we like light dishes and the stew was just too spicy and pungent for us, even though we were told it wasn't spicy. However, the portions were HUGE. We basically took like five scoops out of the stew, and we were pretty done with it (since we couldn't handle it), and we finished the seafood soup. It was so good! I think the stew also came with rice and a bunch of sides and they give you starters too (vegetable, peanuts...) like in those all you can eat KBBQ places.
