for the 30 min wait on a long weekend monday, and the amount of korean i heard while waiting, i expected more from this place. the seafood pancake was great, the thickest one i've had probably with crispy exterior and soft interior, but they could use more seafood and less scallion in the batter. dak galbi flavors felt rather sweet but very tenderly cooked, i would recommend asking them at the end to make it into kimchi fried rice. i think the sour taste from the kimchi made the fried rice yummier than the actual chicken itself. do not get the bossam, it just felt weird that napa cabbage is not complimentary with the dish and the pork didn't really smell good? also partially our bad that we said yes when they asked whether we're okay getting it with oysters which basically came out half frozen and didn't taste fresh. read more

I think I've been sleeping on some traditional Korean food. I thought i had a good grasp of what was good and what was a pass for me. Today was a new experience. This marks my first day having real Soondae. I had it twice before around the El Camino Koreatown area but it was always too light, cold, no flavor.. But here at JangTu, i found the one i love. It was warm, soft and delectable. Normally i love Jokbal over everything but the Soondae was better than the Jokbal to me. Even then, the Jokbal had good flavor. FYI, we mixed it with the Raboki sauce.... heaven! Great service! Super nice and attentive! Made the experience great! 3.5 stars for a solid hole in the wall Korean spot. You know it is authentic with there is a line on the door on a weekday, and all the clientele are Korean. I would get the yuk gae jangagain - yummy and chock full of veggies, but the Ramen dish we got was a little too sweet. The waitresses were all Korean ajummas. One of them was very cute and insisted my friend wear an apron even though she initially declined because she was wearing a white sweater and we were eating very red spicy soup. Found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to try it since I was in the area. I went there around 11:15 and there were already several tables filled. By the time I left around 12:30, there was a line outside. Almost all the patrons eating there speaker Korean so you know the place is authentic. It's a small restaurant with one side of the wall stacked with supplies. People chatted happily while eating. I ordered the goat soup. My wife commented that dining here brought her back to her childhood in Korea. We always come here for our soondae and soondae guk stew. They don't have a notification system so just be mindful of the time and be back before they call your party. We originally were going to order another entree which our server dissuaded against (and thankfully she did). Ambiance (3/5) It's clean but it's more of a casual establishment. There's a wall with takeout containers on one side of the restaurant. Parking/Access (5/5) Located in a strip mall, there's plentiful parking even with the busy market next door. This was a super unique Korean food experience! We tried the modum soondae dish which had pork liver, tongue, stomach, and blood noodle sausage. I believe this was to be paired with a gochugaru salt and what tasted like kimchi juice (wasn't sure if these went together, everything was just given to us haha). This was great, definitely to be shared with at least 3 people, I couldn't finish even half on my own. We also got a soondae guk stew that came as a combo with three yellow croakers. This was super homey and had a seollongtang vibe. Lastly we got the goat stew which I'd never had before. It was spicy with chrysanthemum leaves. The taste was different than the usual Korean BBQ beef bulgogi taste; this one tasted less 'sensational' or less 'intense' in a way that appeared to me to be more 'natural', 'authentic', or something of the like. This is the spot we always go to when we miss the foods we ate when we visited korea. Its a whole in the wall where the menu is very simple and the workers are Ajumas. When they closed the door; the whole vibe will make you feel like you are in korea. And the food? ALWAYS good every single time!!! We came at 1pm on a Saturday. Despite it being somewhat later in the afternoon, there was a line outside. We put our names down and waited around 15 minutes. Some parties placed their orders earlier so that they could be served right when they were seated. The restaurant was quite busy inside (the restaurant itself isn't that huge), and all tables were full. All the workers in JangTu are incredibly friendly and kind! We took a while to order, but the waitress was patient and brought us drinks in the meantime. We ended up ordering the JangTu Baegban (soondae guk with pan fried yellow croaker) and the Haemul Pajeon (seafood and veggie pancake). The JangTu Baegban had a distinct white pepper taste to it, stronger than I'm used to eating, but it enhanced the flavor of the soup quite well. I enjoyed the different types of meat within the soup, and I think it's a great option for people who want to try different types of meat. The pan fried yellow croaker was also fried well! The Haemul Pajeon had great texture due to the seafood. Although I would've preferred it a bit crispier, the flavor was great! JangTu is definitely one of the top Korean restaurants I've had in San Jose, serving authentic options. I would definitely like to come back and try some other dishes! read more

I sometimes add more pepper powder, the chili sauce, and lots of toasted perilla seeds. It depends on my mood. However you season it, It's comforting and satisfying. The banchans are delicious too. BEST GUL BOSSAM EVER! This place is one of my fave Korean restaurants in the Bay Area, has a mom and pop shop feel to it, and the prices here are reasonable especially with this dang inflation. In this economy?! Yes in this economy I recommend coming here. We ordered several dishes: 1. Gul bossam. The star of the show! It's kimchi wrapped with oysters and steamed pork. The different flavors and textures when you take a bite is outta this world! The pork comes out in a heated pot, with the kimchi veggies and oysters. Let me tell you for about 30 dollars this is amazing. The oysters really make it all the more flavorful with the taste of the sea and these oysters taste pretty fresh. The pork is soft, the oysters melt in your mouth, and the kimchi adds such a nice crunch. 10/10 2. Soondae gopchang guk: This is a pork soup with sliced Korean sausage and intestines. The soup base itself is light but still flavorful and hearty. You can ask for some chili paste to elevate it and give it a bit of a spicy kick. The intestines were chewy and cut small enough for a whole bite. However, I thought the Korean sausages were alright. 3. Haemul pajeon: This is their seafood and veggie pancake. I thought this was one was alright because it felt like the batter for the pancake was too thick and was not as crispy. However, my boyfriend enjoyed that part so it's up to preference. This comes with a savory sauce that you dip it in. I liked how you can see the little baby octopus in there. The side dishes here are all amazing and tasty and go great with all the dishes we ordered. The service here is great, everyone is so nice and sweet. They also give you tea to wash everything down. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner one good evening when it was super busy and all you could here was the roar of laughter coming from older Koreans, men and women alike just drinking and having a good time at multiple tables. This was a huge green flag for us, especially since the vibes were great! Even then, there were tables in this cute little hole in the wall that had families with their young children enjoying the meals - another green flag! Waitlist is written in person on a paper It is pretty crowded for dinner and wait times may take up to 1 hour due to the nature of the way the dishes are served and eaten. I highly recommend the 2 person shareable as they give you the choice of white rice or "kimchi fried rice" which they add the rice to your pan of food at the end. It has a nice milky beefy broth so you know you're getting all the good collagen! It comes with so much beef. For a place we've supported with consistent, large orders for years, this was very disappointing. Food safety and customer service are non-negotiable.
