A small little Korean restaurant on El Camino. The food is okay-- they have a lot more items on the menu more than their blood sausage soup. I usually get the blood sausage combination when I come here, which is decent, but it's pretty pricey for the portion that you get. My partner got the gop chang tofu soup and he stated that the intestines were incredibly gritty. Maybe the soup is meant to be like that? Meanwhile I got the tteokbokki which was watery but still spicy and sweet. We got a few side dishes which were nice but I wish had more variety. Three out of four were spicy. Overall, if you have a party of three or more and like traditional Korean food, come here. About three minutes later, a young man with a mop and a bucket comes out and proceeds to apply pine smelling cleaning liquid to the floor, the fumes of which wafted over to my table. It was unpleasant. I changed tables away from the fumes. I ordered soft tofu with beef. Spicy. The waitress noticed I had changed tables, and I told her exactly why. A second worker at the restaurant arrived, and they chatted in Korean. Things went south from there. When the side dishes came, they were only three and they were listless and flavorless. I found this little mom and pop shop in a shopping center. It's a small place with a dozen tables. Everything was in Korean and I heard only Korean from a lot of the people there. I didn't know what to order, so the lady recommended the beef soup that came with the usual kimchi and other sides with rice. Everything was very good and tasty! The korean places we usually go to were closed on Labor Day so my friend wanted to try Obok. I regretted it. First, no purple rice. Second, the seafood tofu soup was expensive but they used the little shrimp that you'd see in cup of noodles. There's also squid but I didn't see any clam. It definitely does not qualify to be called seafood. Third, the menu did not have the usual entrees like galbi and spicy pork. There were only pictures on the wall but there was no price. Finally, when we got the bill, we saw that the galbi was very expensive but not very flavorful. However, the beef and cabbage soup really did hit the spot. They put those ridiculously tiny little shrimp into the stock and while I usually don't care for seafood stocks with land animals in my soup the flavors were definitely balanced and the soup was hearty without being heavy, flavorful without being salty, and had plenty of fun goodies floating around like bulgogi chunks, mushrooms, bean sprouts, and radish. I want to come back to try the soondae sets of course but the goat stew and spicy soondae guk seem to be very popular as well. Tried the intestine tofu soup, which was also flavorful and delicious. For those who enjoy chicken feet, they're chicken feet is delectable - it's coated in a spicy sauce and they give you gloves to eat with it. We walked by accidentally as we were looking for another place. As this is obviously a family run restaurant, I instantly fell in love and we decided to look no further. It is a hidden gem! We got a bunch of bonchons which were replenished and when one was out, a different one was served. The kimchi was so good. My favorite was the radish kimchi - so crunchy, savoury and sppicy. The staff was extremely friendly, helpful, and welcoming. We ordered the kimchi stew and the lamb stew and both were very tasty, savoury and of course spicy! I loved everything! The ambiance is also very nice, modest, quiet, and no k-pop, k-soap TV-style. I really loved it here. We will for sure be back to try the other items on their menu. Places like this need our support! I went to Obok Restaurant on a Sunday night at around 7 pm with a party of 7. There weren't many other customers in the restaurant (but more came at around 30 minutes into our dinner). The owner was friendly and brought us all tea and water. I had the seafood tofu soup in hot stone bowl with purple rice. The texture of the purple rice complemented the soup nicely. The dish also comes with an egg which can be cracked on top of the soup to cook (and it cooks pretty fast since the bowl was very hot). Overall I thought it was great - only thing was that there seemed to be a lot more tofu compared to the amount or seafood and seemed disproportionate. I think this place is better than the other soondae place down in El Camino. Also, this place is a lot friendlier and nicer than Jangtu - I would come here anyway over that other place. I'm glad I came here when the other place was closed bc it made me look for a competitor which tastes better! The sausage noodles don't dry out as much the next day.
