I am staying at the resort and had Dinner at Japengo this week. Food was great as always. My complaint is the fact that our server placed a screaming hot plate directly in front of my ten month old son, who was in a high chair and he burnt his hand so bad it started to blister. I notified the server right away and all I got was a "my bad", I then asked to speak to the manager whom wasn't aware of the situation(I expected the server to at least let the manager know about the situation) and all I got was well what do you want me to do call the fire department? Not is he okay? Can I get you some ice? After dinner I went to the front desk as I still felt like I was brushed off and left my info for the food and beverage manager to call me and they never did. I really look forward to eating at Sonz and Japengo when I stay at the resort but I will take my business elsewhere. read more

Hm.. well it was nice because it was conveniently located in our hotel. But the food did not wow me. The hamachi was probably the best thing we ate here. Nice a huge piece. The sushi didn't wow me. My wife and I have dined at Japengo for over 12 years. Always something we look forward to. However, the visit last year set us back. Japengo was now part of Hyatt. All the usual staff were gone, but we rolled with it. Now this year, and we went twice on our vacation, so disappointing. So let's start with the sushi. We ordered spicy tuna rolls with LESS rice. Many of the common rolls are made well in advance, so we have learned a hack by ordering less rice. Typicall = freshly made. At both dinners the tuna smelled fishy. The toro was on, but not served well. The uni was ok, but portion was very small. In summary not impressed Staff. No follow up after we received our food. Zero. The second night we were at the bar. The staff were all loud and joking around the north end of the bar. I mean loud. I gave a couple the look and they sheepishly moved away. So unprofessional. My wife had to ask for, not just one, but two cleanings of our counter top. Sticky and tons of small bugs flying/crawling on the counter and on our food. Never have we had this experience before. The guy even admitted they are having a problem controlling the small crawling bugs. So gross. My advice, steer clear of Japengo. So sad as this once yummy regular place is now not sterile or yummy. I think the health dept needs to do a deep dive here. We will no longer be frequently dining there. read more

This place is amazing! Be sure to reserve ahead as they fill up fast (like weeks if possible). They social distance well and much of the restaurant is outside. Staff are friendly! To start we had the ribs and pork belly baos. Extremely tasty and cooked to perfection. Meat on the ribs slid off perfectly. Pork belly buns were seasoned so well. We shared blackened ahi and Kaanapali roll. Both had super tender fish and fresh ingredients. As a local from another island, this food was definitely up to par. A perfect place for families and friends. A lot of great drink options. The sake flight was really good and smooth as expected. They have kid meal options too. I would give Japengo more than 5 stars if I could. It is pricey but the food is tasty, unique and exquisite. In a 7-day vacation, we ate here twice. Our first night we both had scallops and we each had a salad. I can't eat dairy so the chef made me a special non-dairy dipping sauce which was incredible. Our server was attentive without hovering. The view was beautiful. We ordered a takeout dinner our last night; two salads and two sushi rolls. Locally grown produce and freshly caught fish. We called in our order and they called within 30 minutes telling us it was ready. Another delicious dinner. Well done Japengo. read more

Japengo is one of a few restaurants in the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort, and room credit can be applied. We came here for an easy dinner and were satisfied. Most of the seating can be counted as patio, but the southern area (towards the left as you enter) will have the better ocean view and maybe also be shaded (depending on the time you eat). Unfortunately those tables only seat 4, so larger parties will be at the northern patio or inside. When close to sunset the northern patio will have sunlight directly and/or reflected off of the ocean. Best item was the pork belly Bao, which comes with 3 per order. Very flavorful pork belly and toppings, would get again. The Chicken Breast with Garlic Noodles was also very good, more so the garlic noodles (amazing and robust flavor) with the chicken taking a backseat in the dish. Thai Lettuce Cups were delicious, generous portion of the ground chicken, lime to spritz, and a sauce that is for...dipping or pouring or paddling with a spoon. Great dish and would get again. The prawn mango salad was solid, good dressing, cold and flavorful prawns, small diced mangoes underneath, a healthy item at a lower price point in the menu. Cajun Hamachi Sashimi was great (so I was told, none was saved for me). Lahaina Sunset Roll looks appealing but was rather bland for all the ingredients that should add flavor. Blackened Ahi Roll also looked great with underwhelming flavor. Maybe the pork belly and lettuce cups just made these seem mediocre flavor by comparison. Calamansi Paloma sounds amazing on paper, even though it's a Paloma without grapefruit, and was described as a margarita and I do think that is apt. It's downfall is the amount of ice, where the first sip or two were flavorful, but each sip after that was watered down. If the first sip flavor could be maintained then I would recommend the drink, but with all that ice (needed to keep it cold?) it doesn't stay great long. Lastly we asked for ponzu sauce twice, and we're surprised to find that as a small surcharge on the bill. Notification would have been appreciated. A 20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more was displayed in the menu. read more

Great atmosphere, views, and delicious food! We had an amazing experience dining at Japengo. The atmosphere was romantic and the views at sunset were stunning since this restaurant overlooks the ocean. Service: Service was so friendly and attentive. For dinner we started off with some cocktails (well I ended up getting a mocktail because I'm allergic to alcohol). The waiter recommended something with ginger beer and I was a huge fan. For the food, we started off with the steamed clams which were absolutely perfect and we also ordered a roll to share. My husband and I each had the chirashi for dinner and were very happy with our meal. Fish was all fresh and nicely prepared and overall food was great. Ugh. I hate hate hate over paying for crappy food. The only this place is even getting two stars was: 1. their super sweet hostess that worked PM shift Jan 16th that was so kind to make sure I had everything I needed for my meal. 2. their matcha cheesecake because they added a bunch of Oreo crumbs. I'm not sure if it's because it was a Sunday and the fish was bad or what, but it was so so bad. I only had 3 bites and had to toss it out. It took about 45 mins for my order to be prepared (which was fine, bc I know things are understaffed with covid) I had ordered Salmon Nigiri, the Laihaina Sunset roll, and I think it was the Kaanapali roll? I'm not one to complain directly to the hotel because hey, I get it. You're understaffed, overworked and I don't want to add on to the pressure. But damn, this was just out right horrible and robbery for hotel food. $91 for 2 rolls, salmon nigiri, and dessert since they had a 15% auto gratuity for take out orders. Maybe it was because it was a Sunday and it was just the end of their prep food? but the fish was warm (yuck for RAW), and flavorless. It seems like people's mileage may vary, but I would MAYBE only come back for drinks and the view. That's a big MAYBE and if somebody else paid for me to go LOL. read more

We had been looking forward to dining at Japengo since we booked our Maui trip 8 months ago, and it did not disappoint. Everything about Japengo was fabulous. The sleek ambiance, the refreshing outdoor patio seating, and the excellent staff combined helped create the perfect dining experience. We ordered the sushi, and it was by far the best sushi I've ever had. While Japengo is known for their sushi they also offer fish and steak dishes. We had the pleasure of staying at the Hyatt Regency during our stay in Maui and ended up eating here two nights because the sushi and service was outstanding! They had many delicious items on the menu but we couldn't bring ourselves to order anything other than sushi! (and dessert). The sushi was AMAZING. Generous-sized rolls with delicious, fresh fish. Mmmm. The location and view are lovely. The service both nights, including the hostesses, was outstanding. There is a parking lot for the hotel or valet as well. Better yet, if you are staying nearby/Whalers Village, hop on the free trolley! I do suggest making reservations. The only room for improvement is to offer a larger selection of sushi and although the Ka'anapali Pie was delicious, it was so frozen that it was too difficult to eat and therefore, enjoy. Suggest maybe letting it rest before serving. Oh! and I wish they had been open for lunch or at least offered sushi midday :) but that is just a *wish*. Overall, I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend dining here if you are staying anywhere in the area. The only other place I liked was Monkeypod in Whalers Village for lunch. And, since Japengo is only open for dinner.... well, no conflict there!! Honestly I would have eaten here a 3rd time if it had been up to me :) Enjoy!! read more

Went here based off a locals recommendation and couldn't be happier we did. We ended up going twice because the first time was that good. Sushi was AMAZING, chicken dish great, fried rice awesome though a little greasy. Pricing was not bad considering island prices and what you got for it. I would 10/10 recommend anyone to come here! Just thought it was important to get this out there....i know some people are experiencing challenging times at Japengo. We have been going here for nearly 10 years and NEVER had a meal that did not meet or exceed our expectations. We were here August 21st and had 8pm reservations and requested earlier, like 7pm and they were so accommodating. We had to wait at the bar for 20 min or so and got to know Lance who was SO appreciative that we were here and supporting west maui. He was awesome. As promised we were seated early and had an awesome meal with Otoro, Kampachi and Sake...SO fresh and good. Also service (Chantrelle???) was so attentive. The Udon noodle dish with shrimp and lobster was amazing. Will come back here again and again. Looking forward to seeing the new patio but good job making the current one work. Kinda disappointing dinner. Brought my boyfriend here for his birthday (I mentioned it was his bday in the reservation) and was only greeted at the host stand. Sat us at a not so clean table that was not even set and the server didn't greet my boyfriend even after checking his license when he ordered some wine. Thought maybe she was just going to surprise him at the end but she just brought the check for us after we boxed up our food. Cynthia was nice but I just felt they would've at least done that considering Japengo is a somewhat "fancier" restaurant. Sit at the bar (no reservations required) and order the two best things on the menu: Trader Vic's Original Mai Tai and the awesomely flavored chicken lettuce wraps and you'll be a happy camper. Beautiful view. Now go home. The normal dining experience was very disappointing on several levels. Service was dreadful due to understaffing, undertraining, and a poorly managed back of house. I felt bad for them. The food (other than the lettuce wraps) ranged from boring and flavorless (stir fried vegetables and tofu - supposedly one of their specialties) to literally inedible (the braised beef short ribs). The shrimp was overcooked. The side of bok choy was dull. I had to ask for soy sauce for the veg stir fry so it tasted like something. It also had about five 1" cubes of tofu. Really? $26 with a 10x+ markup and you cheap out on the friggin tofu? Not recommended. read more

Disappointed in our experience tonight. My surf and turf came out with a steak that was nearly well done despite being ordered medium rare. The recook took so long my partner was done eating by the time the steak came back out. I would have expected at least a manager to pop by with an apology given the high price point of this restaurant and extended wait, but nobody seemed to care. We had a few rolls of amazing sushi for our appetizer and followed it up with the Fried Rice and The Shaking Beef Noodles. The food was really flavorful and the portions were large. The area surrounding the restaurant are under construction and the views are obscured by walls. It was uncomfortably hot, even in the air conditioned space. Located within the Hyatt in Kaanapali we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and service. First time we ordered sushi and rolls and it rivaled some of the best sushi we've had. Japengo isn't temporarily closed, it opened on 26th November 23, but it should be closed as they are doing major renovations and the restaurant isn't up to it's usual fantastic standard. We booked for Hubb's birthday and when we arrived the view was boarded up, the bar closed, and we had to wait to be seated even though we made a reservation. Then they took us to a dark corner where it was surrounded by dark brown boards so we asked to wait for another seat. Back to the entrance and waiting around looking at brown boards, very depressing. Then they had a table open and we walked in and it was almost next to the one we refused to be seated at. So back to the entrance to wait. We were just on the verge of walking out when they said they had a table for us. It was at the end of the only view right beside a huge hole and more boards but I saw a nice table in the middle that was free and promptly sat at it to stop this charade and actually get a table that had a slight view, one of 4 in the restaurant. The waiting staff weren't too pleased but I was over the seating fiasco and needed a drink after all this toing and froing. At long last we had a table and Michael our server promptly arrived and saved the night for us! He was excellent, quick, nice to talk to, and saved our birthday celebration. Yay, Mahalo Michael :) Cocktails were ordered, a lychee martini and a mocktail, and they were excellent. I normally don't like lychee but the pineapple gives it an edge and it went down well. Hubbs, the nominated driver liked his juicy mocktail and it was nice to get something other than coke. We ordered our usual, Unagi sashimi, the seafood pancakes each, along with the mashed potato with kimchee. YUM! Although the seafood pancakes consistency has changed and it is more like a pizza on the interior than a pancake. Preferred the original texture so a star off. But the dipping sauce...oh my, I could add a tequila shot n drink it like a cocktail, salty, umami goodness. Our birthday celebration was dismal. It is a pity the Hyatt isn't being open and letting customers know that there is major construction going on and that the restaurant is boarded up and the bar closed. We won't be back for a while because of this. Pity, it used to be our favourite restaurant! read more

My daughter asked for the special "We don't have that" I asked for glass of Prosecco "We don't have that" Listen I got the message you did not want us there delaying your departure. Read good reviews about Japengo, and decided to make reservations for the day we checked in at the Hyatt. We arrived at 5:30pm and were seated right away. Our server greeted us and water was brought to the table. Food: We ordered Edamame as an appetizer. I decided on the California Roll and my husband got the Filet Mignon, (ordered medium rare). The California Roll was decently sized with a generous portion of crab and avocado. My husband's filet was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The filet was accompanied by mashed potatoes. Overall, service was really good. Our drinks were brought out in a timely matter, and our waters were consistently filled. View was great! Covid protocols are followed with social distancing of tables and everyone wearing mask and gloves. I highly recommend Japengo, and look forward to our next visit. read more
