Japengo is located within the property of the Hyatt Regency (Maui) You really are coming here for the ambiance. I highly recommend that you make a reservation at least a month or two in advance. A lot of restaurants within the mega resorts book up pretty fast. I had a reservation for four at 6pm. If I could do it again, I'd recommend a 6:30 or 7pm reservation during the summertime. In either case, we were able to enjoy dinner until the sunset. You can't beat the view and all that you're surrounded by. Our waiter was nice enough to snap a few awesome photos for our group. We had a few different kinds of their special sushi rolls. They weren't terrible. But weren't all that either. It's Maui. They were expensive, as expected. I'd say try it for the ambiance. If you're coming here and expecting amazing sushi, well this ain't it. Sushi 5/10. Ambiance 10/10. Service 7/10. This place used to be great so on our recent trip we ate here again couple of times the food was okay, the fried rice barely any chicken and 2 shrimps dropped in quality. Though really bad experience with the Hostess and Hoala, the Manager on June 17 evening when they made their point and forced their will on us. We had ordered take out at the host station a few nights before, but on this date we were told to go to the bar, we said they helped us here before so she took our order and said it will be about 1 hr which was fine. It got worse after my wife and I left 30 minutes later the manager called left a message and canceled our order. We were in the lobby area rushed back and he told us we can't take your order he blamed the Chef said he is too busy needs to fulfill the in dining orders first and too busy. Then we pretty much begged him as our kids were waiting for food. He told us go to the bar and place the order then it will still be about an hour wait. We went to the bar placed the same order while other folks that arrived after us were getting their food. Let me start off with that amazing ambience. It was a short trip to Maui was at the resort for a week. This is located and part of the Hyatt and it was just amazing. Secondly, the service started off rough. However, the manager Lisa was nice enough to make everything white and my waitress was amazing. Her name was kato The food was OK. I ordered spicy edamame could've had more flavor but definitely the beans were way too hard. Secondly, the pork valley was amazing. Beautiful ginger teriyaki sesame flavor. Same with the bok choy. Amazing garlic noodles was amazing. The lobster could've been better the butter was cold, which makes it hard and it needed to be accompanied with lemon. I ordered this steak unfortunately it was super salty. May I've just been an off night however I came two nights prior had great service. Dined at Japengo this evening and we're looking forward to having a nice dinner and to enjoy the Maui sunset. The hostess sat us an a table with an obstructed view. There was a pillar right in the center of our sightline. It ruined our dinner date. The waitress gave us a lame explanation about the table placement would affect surrounding tables and did not offer to move us. As with each trip twice a year to Maui we visit Japengo. This year we were very disappointed We were a party of six. Atmosphere was as gorgeous as ever! Menu changed and the best dish, the scallops, were taken off the menu and replaced by a very bland shrimp dish. Our sushi rolls were dried out as though they were made in the morning and sat in a fridge all day, (rice was hard and no sauce) fried rice dish was still good, but overall this once fabulous restaurant may be off the list for any future visits! read more

Japengo was a really nice restaurant and provided for a really nice evening for us. We were hesitant to go there because of the prices, but we love Japanese food and we were staying at the Hyatt Regency so we figured it was okay to splurge one night and eat at the restaurant at our resort! We weren't disappointed. It's located in a really cool spot on the resort so you're overlooking the beach and pool area. We initially were being put in the back where we didn't have a view at all, and we asked to be in the front and they did put us over there, but seemed somewhat reluctant. We did have two young kids with us, not sure if that's why. Anyway they ended up putting us up there, we didn't have to wait long. John was our waiter and he was great. We ordered the lettuce cups and they were so devious. John got us extra lettuce for that at no cost. It was a ton of meat, so the initial lettuce they gave wasn't nearly enough. We also got the miso soup, which was $10 each. They were super small, but tasty. Not sure I'd pay for that again. I ordered avocado and cucumber sushi and my husband got the Rainbow Sushi. It was basically California Roll topped with different types of fish/shellfish. I don't remember what exactly they were, but one of them was shrimp. He said he'd order it again, it was really good! This was definitely a much better restaurant experience than Umalu, the other restaurant on the resort site. If we stayed here again, we'd definitely come back to Japengo! I would recommend making a reservation if you can, we got lucky and got seated quickly, but I can imagine it not being that way normally! read more

We came here for dinner because we wanted Asian food. We ordered the blacked ahi tuna roll, curry dusted calamari, pork belly bao, mahi mahi, and fried rice. The fried rice was a huge portion! We visited Japengo every time we are in Maui and pleasantly surprised by its quality. Each roll is filled & fresh. Each roll is worth every penny. However, we tried the scallops, which yes were tasty, not really worth the $40+ unless you LOVE scallops. We will be back to try something new again! It's been since pre - Covid that we have enjoyed the views, lounge and Japengo! Naturally, we were a little disappointed when we arrived to barricades and construction, which marred one of the restaurant's top feature, its panoramic view of the ocean and Lahaina. Another disappointment is that construction impacted the live entertainment which was usually in the afternoons through early evenings. Not to worry, we were told that it would be a few more weeks to completion. We were greeted by the always friendly and efficient service from the hostesses, bartenders, and servers. We enjoyed a well paced dinner, which started with edamame and calamari. Our dinners were served family style in great portions for four people. I especially enjoyed that our server Katyana, offered have our 16 oz ribeye cut by the chefs. Our ribeye was cooked to order perfectly - I would have preferred the ginger demi-glaze was served on the side, garlic noodles with just the right amount of garlic, and our sushi rolls made with seafood so fresh that I could seemingly taste the ocean! We topped it off with fresh malasadas served with chocolate, vanilla mac nut and Lilikoi dipping sauces. We cannot wait to return to enjoy Sunset happy hours and music in the lounge ! read more

We made reservations two months before flying to Maui for the holidays. Japengo does not participate on OpenTable, you'd book directly through the restaurant's website. The day before our reservation,  we received an email to confirm our reservation. This was our first visit to Japengo so we got there early to find parking. There is self parking on the left, prior to the Hyatt lobby. You enter the lot by taking a ticket. Check-in was quick and we were seated once everyone in our party arrived(give yourself extra time to walk from self-parking to the restaurant). Once you get into the lobby, turn right towards the ocean and you'll see a bar and the check-in counter. The menu offered a good mix of appetizers,  entrees, and sushi. We got the Crispy Pork Belly Bao Buns, Karaage Chicken,  Chirashi Don, Kauai shrimp, Grilled Scallops,  Grilled Local Fish, and Japengo Fried Rice. The Karaage chicken were crispy and the Bao Buns were tasty. Liked the wasabi crema on the chicken,  would have liked a side of crema for dipping. Happy with both dishes. Our entrees arrived and we didn't realize we needed to order a side dish to accompany the Grilled Local Fish, Scallops,  and Kauai shrimp. Ahh! Our server didn't prompt us to order side dishes when we gave our order.  When our server dropped off the other half of our entrees, we ordered a side of jasmine rice and side of sweet potato hash. The rice and hash arrived pretty quickly so we could enjoy it with our entrees. The Chirashi Don had a good amount of fish and a large serving of rice. I wish the sushi rice served in the Chirashi Don was more seasoned. A few pieces of fish were slightly grilled- I really enjoyed that textural difference. This was a beautiful bowl of fish and I ate ALL the fish. The scallops were HUGE! The butter-yaki sauce was flavorful. If we make it back, I'd order that dish. The grilled fish was Mahi Mahi and it was a good size filet. The Kauai shrimp with white wine sauce were big prawns. Filling and tasty dish. The fried rice was good. We completed our meal with a Pineapple Upside Down cake and a Kaanapali pie. The Upside Down cake was served at room temperature. I prefer warm desserts. The slice was a smaller serving than one we had at another resort a couple weeks ago. We really liked the Kaanapali pie- made with banana. 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill for our large group.  Self-parking at Hyatt's restaurant lot cost $14 for the couple hours we were at dinner. Overall, positive experience. The view is amazing. read more

Beautiful modern styled Asian restaurant. Food was a question mark. Everyone says fresh tasting fish/food? I didn't see it. We ordered the California roll it tasted like store bought crab mix with sesame seeds on/around it. Also we ordered the Jidor chicken tasty but overcooked. Also ordered the spicy tuna rolls and hamachi sashimi. They plated all on 1 plate, unbeknownst to me I ended up being allergic to the hamachi. I have never been to a sushi restaurant where they combine different orders. Unsafe. We also ordered the Fried rice it was good but on the oily side. Lastly we ordered the shaking beef rice noodles?? Not sure they were rice noodles? No flavor and dry beef, I don't remember shaking beef to taste like that? Not sure if we'll ever come back. Great views but seriously mediocre food. Located within the glamorous Hyatt resort in Kaanapali, Japengo provides excellent Japanese cuisine and sushi with a gorgeous setting and one of the best sunset views we have seen on our Maui trip so far. If you want to set the stage for romance, this is the place. For dinner we had the pork belly bao buns and two sushi rolls, which were very flavorful and each had their own unique twist. Bert was our server and he was great! The only downside is with the remodel there are a lot of tables out in the open. They're not joking, BEST Mai Tai on this this stretch of Maui! Booked it for the sunset, couldn't make it and they were extremely accommodating. Our server was exceptional. She was very well informed and knowledgeable about many things around the island and the resort itself. She even told us about the animals we could see. The scallops and the toro sushi were the top 2 dishes for us. They were a few that did not hit the mark for us. But in all honesty we were there for the Mai Tais. We will definitely return when we are back in the island. Willing to try more things on their menu. read more

Went to Japengo for dinner and let me start off by saying that we had an amazing hostess Chantrell. Kindest soul you'll ever meet!!! We were unsure of what to have and her recommendations were on point. Started off with Clams and poke, I had the scallops and hubby had the rib eye, followed by the insane dessert. I can not rave enough about the food!!! The view was also amazing!! I have friends going In September and I've already told them they MUST go and they also have to be in Chantrells area! The food at Japengo was very good and beautifully presented, and the ocean view was excellent -- definitely one of the highlights of the experience. However, I was disappointed that parking was not validated, even after spending over $1,000 for a party of seven. For a restaurant at this price point, that felt like a missed opportunity to provide better customer service.
