The ambiance of the restaurant was great with dim lighting and beautiful views, and the portions quite large--the nigiri included. I had the 5 nigiri omakase and uni nigiri for my main, and the uni was fantastic. And the spicy edamame was probably my favorite of the dishes we ordered. It was very well prepared compared to prior nigiri I've had. Now, the reason for the 2 star review? The service. For a ~$300 meal, the service was near rock bottom. 1. The miso soup that was ordered was never provided. Then to make matters worse, after it was cancelled (as everything else had already arrived), it still ended up on the check. 2. The pacing. The starters arrived at the same time as the main dishes. There was no pause between. And our table ended up quite full, and having to rush between cold sushi and hot dishes. 3. We didn't get soy sauce. My husband asked the waitress for soy sauce and she said she'll get it. She left and returned and proceeded to give soy sauce to the guy across from us. Much to both his and our confusion. Then she left and got us soy sauce. 4. Being rushed. There was an overall sense of being rushed. I left to go to the bathroom half way into my food and came back to a table with the food all boxed up. We were there less than an hour. 5. "The boxes are behind me." -- My husband explained what occurred while I was gone. The waitress came by and asked if I was coming back to finish my food or if I was done. He replied I'll be back. Her response was "Would you like the rest of the food boxed up?" He replied sure. And she replied by pointing behind her "The boxes are behind me." That completely confused my husband. Did she expect him to go get the boxes himself and box his food? Luckily the second male older server came by and boxed up the food for him. 6. It wasn't just us. I noticed her bring something to the couple beside us and them being confused and telling her they didn't order it. That couple appeared rushed as well. We left a 15% tip which is low for us. Would have been 10% but didn't want to stiff the older waiter that was doing his job well and we weren't sure how the tips were being split. 7. Side note: when she arrived she asked if we wanted any hot tea. We already had tea on the table that the older waiter brought. If she just looked at our table she would have seen it. Ultimately the food was good, but the service was so abysmal we're not going back. I couldn't even enjoy my food. And thus we wouldn't recommend it. read more

Japengo was solid on my second visit - definitely a pricier spot, but that's Maui. We ordered the chef's special roll (hamachi, rice, crab, cucumber) - really good. Also got the garlic noodles, which four of us shared, though one hungry person could easily finish it solo. We ordered three rolls but probably needed four or five to really fill us all up. The highlight, though, was dessert: the Kaanapali Pie - crazy good. Chocolate layered cake with some kind of mocha or ice cream center and fudge on top - loaded with flavor. We also had the crème brûlée, which was good but didn't beat the pie. Sat on their newly opened outdoor patio with a panoramic ocean view - awesome photo spot. Service was friendly and attentive, drinks were solid (I had the mule, our friends had old fashioned - at least two rounds). Great for a date night or special occasion - my wife and I first came here for our anniversary, and if you mention that, they may comp the dessert. Indoor seating also has ocean views. The food is good. The service is horrible. The waiter never checked on us, was very rude, and mansplained to us. They offered to make a reservation for our birthday and they forgot to bring out the birthday dessert. After we left, the hostess apologized and said a manger would come out and after 20 minutes, the hostess said the manager was in a meeting and couldn't come out. They put the dessert in a bag to go and no one ever spoke to us. For the price of this place, not worth the horrible service. We tend to crave the California rolls and will even order to-go to enjoy in our room or out on the beach. There is a variety of options to choose from which makes it wonderful. It is not just sushi, you can choose other meals that are definitely worth it. This trip I tried the Shaking Beef Noodles and oh my gosh the beef was to die for! It was way better than I expected! I love this place and my family and I have been going for years which is why it's such a bummer to write this. I dined there with my friend 3 nights ago and the service was pretty good for being so busy but I fear someone misinformed our server about the soy sauce. I'm gluten free, celiac specifically so I take it tremendously serious. Our waiter brought by a little thing of soy sauce unprompted and made sure to tell us it was "gluten free soy sauce". I remember thinking to myself "this is the best tamari I've ever had wow" and like a dummy, I ate it without suspicion. Almost immediately I became sick and days later am still sick. I can't be 100% sure it was the soy sauce but as someone who's been diagnosed for years, I know the "this tastes too good to be true" feeling and I should not have ignored it and asked to see the bottle. If it was the soy sauce however, I'd really hope this doesn't happen to anyone else :/ read more

So a little base is for my critique... I have previously been the food business for 20 years and I'm over 63 years old, so I've been to do a few restaurants in my day, think hundreds plus....... I have been to 0 Star and 3 Michelin Stars, and it's all about the experience... Japengo has the following pluses n minuses: -- atmosphere is 7.5, Asian/Japanese chic with a View -- the food is good, but with regret, 2X overpriced due to the reliance on atmosphere... sad -- NO Happy Hour -- I ordered clams in Thai coconut sauce- about 6 scale 1-10. -$22, there is nothing special about this dish -- my GF ordered garlic noodles $20- 5.5 on scale -- my ire goes to "Jasmine rice" to the tune of $8 for one cup... Really? WTF? -- it's not like the portions are large - it's more about presentation than substance. Again think sad... I have surmised that this restaurant is way overpriced and relies on View, presentation, chic atmosphere, rather than substance, and while the sushi was good either you have enough money that you don't care and you can burn it... Or your trying to impress your date., And hope that she won't be impressed by the atmosphere and not necessarily the food.. We all walk away from a restaurant with a gut feeling,-- was it worth it? I can only tell you that I've paid twice a price for the same food and come off with a better experience. Waite staff was "cordial" but not warming/inviting. I would definitely not recommend this restaurant as there are too many good choices, and unless you want to just blow your money for $135, for two appetizers and three beers, then save your money. Located inside the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, this place boasts breathtaking ocean views and a cool, upscale vibe. Oh, and OMG! hands down, the best sushi I've ever had in my life (and likely ever will TBH). I tried the Chef's Special roll which changes nightly, and it was out of this world. The freshness and flavor are unmatched. The Baos were equally stellar -- Perfectly balanced and packed with the most succulent pork belly and pickled veggies. And we absolutely had to end on the Malasadas!!! They're light, fluffy, and come with a trio of dipping sauces: passion fruit, mango, and chocolate. Ugh, I die! Staff are very professional and sensitive, appearing at always the right moment. We started with the Trader Vic's original Mai Tai. This ain't your resort-style blend. Honest-to-goodness old school kinda boozy like when folk's livers were leathery. Giddyup. Wine list covers many mid to upper-tier new and old world selections including a brief list of sake. Tonite we ordered the chef's special roll of spicy tuna,cucumber and avocado under sliced blue-fin, tobiko and microgreens, (chef's special a must every time) and nigiri of o toro, and Santa Barbara uni. In the past they've served mostly Hokkaido so was nice for the change. No matter, their produce is always superbly selected. There is a variety of sides dishes that allow some creativity in composing your feast. Tonite we put together kimchee edamame mash potatoes, shiitakes braised in garlic-oyster sauce and side scallops (2 per order). Flavors are deep and satisfying without too much weight. Sides are quite generous. There are desserts that look great but we typically pass, so no comment. Come n see for yourself. Overall, excellent as always. Aren't You Glad to Sashimi? Located at the world-class Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, Japengo ("Land of Mystery") offers up a fusion of Asian cuisine meets island flavors into harmonious dishes. Altho, they definitely do lean into the Japanese side of Asia. This was probably our second favorite meal during our time on Maui, and it was the second and final family dinner to celebrate my parents' 50th anniversary. The Good: *Service was outstanding. I wish I could recall our server's name (Yukakoe?) to give her a shout-out, but I don't recall. *Drinks were fantastic and strong. *Location is really terrific as the whole restaurant is open-air, and the views of Ka'anapali Beach are amazing. Pro Tip: Try and schedule your meal about an hour or so before sunset to really get the best time. *Spicy Edamame was delicious and a good app for sharing. *Karaage Chicken was also crispy and delicious. *Omakase (chef's choice) sashimi was outstanding, as all the fish was super fresh, delicately prepared, and practically melted in my mouth. *Sushi rolls were pricy but huge and delicious. *Great place to celebrate a special date, as they went all out and had a special off-the-menu dessert for my parents. *Speaking of desserts, both desserts we sampled were fantastic. The Ka'anapali Pie was rich and chocolatey, while the Malasadas were served warm, yeasty and had three great concomitant dipping sauces (Chocolate, Liliko'i, and Vanilla Mac) to keep the flavors interesting. The Meh: *I wasn't a fan of their poke, as the fish itself was good, but I didn't care for the crunchy hanbun rice underneath it. Kinda like eating poke with a rice cracker. Very strange... *I wish they had more local brews on-tap. *Reservations are highly recommended, especially for large parties. Don't expect to walk in and be seated. *Prices are definitely not cheap but you're paying for outstanding service and quality ingredients. The Ugly: *Parking at the Hyatt is a real shit-show, especially if you have a large SUV. The parking lot is extremely narrow, and the parking spots are even narrower. We waited 1 hour to be served and the waiter did not ask everyone what they wanted to drink. We waited 2 hours to have our food served. The food was very good when it finally arrived. The staff was good although we asked for a table with some shade and we were placed in the middle of the very large patio...note, really no shade. Consistency embodies the service and food from Japengo. I have been coming here for many years through pandemic and the Lahaina fire. The hosts, wait staff and management (Alejandro) at Japengo has always been professional and offering excellent hospitality. Tonight our server Jeff made our dining experience wonderful with his recommendations and timing of dishes delivered. We prefer to eat family style and in a relaxed pace.
