An excellent brunch spot. I recommend the corn pancakes, which have whole corn kernels in them, not just cornmeal. They are perfectly sweet and tasty. The prices believe it or not for brunch are comparable to BLD's when you come down to it, just with fewer options. I have also come for Mozzarella Monday. The meatball sub is insane, but so are most of the items on the Mozzarella menu! I think their drinks are overpriced, but drinks are overpriced everywhere in this city. Still, I order them. Awesome room - it's what I envision the main cabin on my yacht will look like when I hit the mega millions. We were underwhelmed by the fare on offer. We went looking for an awesome steak experience, but were sorely disappointed. The meat didn't have that melt in your mouth texture, nor did it have that mixture of fat and seasoning to send your taste buds a tingling. I ordered the special sea bass which was $38 for a 4 x 4 inch square of fish and a tiny cup of capers and caper berries and nothing else. The fish had a nice flavor, but was seriously overcooked and dry. I found that most of the food was under-seasoned, plain and lacked sex-appeal or a least a really great sauce to help it along. It just seemed like overpriced healthy old-people food. We won't be back. read more

My partner and I just came in from a nice meal at Jar. We used an Open Table Certificate. I'll make this a quick one: The room was well-appointed and very, very noisy. Filled to bursting - it was well-lighted and nicely decorated and as loud as a junior high pep rally. We had some nice food - I began with their Manhattan - it was dark, rich and perfect - but at $18.00 - more than a little overpriced - I feel. I started with squash blossoms that were heavenly - HEAVENLY! - and JP began with a fine golden beet salad - both were perfectly prepared and quite on target - I would order both again. I ordered the lamb shank - and I have rarely had better (California Canteen could take a lesson from this place - actually SEVERAL lessons) the sauce was wonderfully nappe and the meat was luscious. My partner ordered the pot roast - and while good - we have made much better here at home - granted we make sauerbraten - a slightly different dish - but my partner remarked that the meat was too fat - and it was - but still a cut well above the average. We also ordered the cream corn - I give it a 4.0 and the brussels sprouts - high marks there too - let's say 3.8. I ordered a glass of Rhone (red) to accompany - a fine choice - and we had their chocolate pudding (3.6) and banana cream pie (3.0) for dessert. (I also had a perfectly made espresso.) The desserts were a bit of a let down - I could easily have made better banana cream pie - while my partner thought the pudding was great - I was less impressed. We both agreed that while VERY ENJOYABLE - we probably would not revisit Jar in the near future. Rosie - our waitress - was attentive at first but less than personable - perfunctory at best - and certainly only going through the motions - but the back waiters and other service personnel were nimble, efficient and extremely professional. Jar is decidedly the noisiest restaurant that I have been to since the '70's. My lady and I had to yell at each other to be heard. The food was expensive and often meager in portions but the service was good. I was excited about seeing fried clams on the menu, remembering the paper cones of clams that I used to get at Howard Johnson's back East. We received a small bowl with a veneer of clams supported by a bunch of very good shoe string potatoes. The clams were very few, over battered and over cooked at $17.00. I also tried the warm oysters with bacon which were quite tasty but very small and only three in number for $16.00. The Brussels sprouts were over cooked like my mother's. That's why I didn't like them! My pork chop was succulent but not remarkable. Actually the kale was the best thing that we had and it was reasonably priced. Beautiful decor. Went during Dine LA, but chose to order off the menu. I had the lamb shank which was very flavorful, but definitely had a good amount of fat on it. My friend ordered the short ribs which were also tasty. My husband and his friend decided to share the "special" which was the Tomahawk steak for 2. Said to be 40 oz, they assumed plenty to go around. The only thing plentiful was the price and the bone! They had the nerve to charge $120 for this entree, which was no more than about 6 or 7 small thin slices of meat, laid on top of a 16" bone with a whole sauteed onion on the side. It tasted alright, but no better than any other cut of beef. Being that the most expensive entree on the menu was $42, we anticipated the special to cost ~$85-$95 since it was intended for 2, but $120 was ridiculous. There were no leftovers either except for the bone, so I think it is safe to say that my dog enjoyed that meal more than the guys did. Dessert was good, not great. We had the banana cream pie, and the butterscotch pudding. Both just slightly better than you would have at a diner. Service was ok, but we definitely felt like we were being hurried so that they could have our table. This restaurant had been on our list for years to try, and now that we have, I don't think I need to go back. read more

I've been trying to get a reservation here for a while now and I finally got in. It was well worth the wait. I have never had oxtail before, but figured if I would try it anywhere this would be the place. IT WAS AMAZING! For dessert I had the butterscotch pudding and it was unbelievably delicious. I'm using the lowest rating not due to the mediocre food but due to the unacceptable dining experience. Between a loud soundtrack of "classic rock" songs that is antithetical to fine dining and the shout-to-be-heard noise level, I should have got up and left. The wait staff was no help whatsoever. A lobster prix fix was disappointing, with a bad "pancake" first course, tough lobster marring an otherwise good preparation for the main course, and a heavy dessert. But there are lots of people who like all this, judging from the crowd. read more

My wife & I had dinner here on a friday night. The rib eye steak was delicious which I highly recommend. I would stay away from the halibut which was mediocre at best. It's sad but Jar has really gone downhill since we were last there about a year ago. The wedge salad is four tiny pieces of limp, room temperature lettuce, the grilled salmon cooked "medium" came like sashimi. The side orders are miniscule - good for one appetite, or two very small appetites, at most. Even their "signature" chocolate pudding isn't that great; I've had better instant Jello. The butterscotch pudding is good, however -- so do yourself a favor and go there for dessert but not dinner. The chef was on "Top Chef Masters"? Shocking - was he eliminated in the first round? Lastly, the prices might have been reasonable had the food been stellar -- but even then, not so much. The small upside: our waitress was terrific. read more

Then, there is the $5 split charge for it, which wassn't mentioned, bringing it to $18. The Coq Au Vin was chicken only, not one roasted vegetable like potato, mushroom, or carrots. We ate here for the first time last weekend and had an amazing experience. The service was excellent. Attentive but not overbearing. Our server knew the menu well and her recommendations were spot on. The décor was simple and clean. We liked it. The mussels appetizer was amazing, the Kansas City steak and rib-eye steaks were probably some of the best beef we've ever had. Up to this point, Mastro's was my go-to steakhouse but not anymore. The brussel sprouts were incredible, the onion rings so delicious, the yams equally good. We really aren't desert people all that much but their chocolate mint parfait and ice creams were too good for only a bite or two. However today on Mothers Day, the service was horrible, my food was luke warm, and they kept saying they didn't know what was taking so long (even though the manager and waitress were in the kitchen.) I've been wanting to try out JAR for some time now and with Valentine's Day coming up, it was a perfect time to try it out. I've gotta say I wasn't very impressed with the food. If it were just my dish then it would have been easily forgiven but every single dish that we ordered needed some improvements. My boyfriend ordered the beef bourguignon on a bed of egg noodles (the dish that made Julia Child's famous) Julia would be sad to know that they butchered the dish! I ordered a beef flank steak with a side of some sort of lobster dipping sauce (I think sizzlers would have been much more enjoyable). We also ordered a side of duck fried rice (there were definitely small duck pieces in the rice but it looked like it was a day old rice and duck that was just thrown together really quick). The only dish that I really liked was the side of garlic fries. The service was good and the ambiance was very 1970 esque. Wouldn't say that I'd return for a second try. read more

Good service, great atmosphere. I came here for the pot roast, but no more. My good friend was in town and we thought it would be great to get some serious comfort food. It's a little "dark" in the restaurant, so I was taken back that my first bite from the pot roast was very fatty. Oh well, I tried it again, it melted in my mouth, only it was mostly fat, ugh. Ok, let me take a cut from a different part of the roast, same thing. Cutting into it with my knife I discovered it was a fatty piece of inferior beef that any serious chef would have thrown out. I barley ate a third of it and gave up. I've been in the cattle business most of my life and this was not prime or choice beef. My friend said that her's wasn't that fatty but utterly tasteless compared to her previous experience there. The waitress said nothing when she took my plate of barely touched pot roast. We both, wrote the restaurant (never asking for a refund) nice letters but no response. When hard working people spend over $100 for dinner and are fed an old Chino cow, how can you expect us to ever return. read more

How can a restaurant be out of a featured cocktail at 6:30 in the evening? Not an auspicious start!!! The food is fine -- nothing special. We were a party of 5 and had the gamut from the very limited menu. The beef was good, the chicken good, the endive salad really good. I had the special John Dory -- what a mistake!! Dry and bland. And a tiny little portion -- whereas the other portions were more generous. The only reason I didn't send it back was that I poured my husband's coq au vin sauce over it and it was fine -- so no need to upset the party. Someone had fried clams -- usually I love, love, love them -- these were bready and bland. The sides --- bland. The mashed potatoes were fine -- but all of the vegetables were tasteless and overcooked. Nothing special at all. I'm not crazy about the decor -- but I will say that the chairs are exceptionally comfortable. But the noise level makes conversation painful, especially around a round table. I have now been here twice and I have to say I am not impressed. The first time I ordered the famous pot roast and, while good, it wasn't anything to write home about. We also ordered a few sides and one was so horrible (turnips) we actually had to send it back, which I've never done before. It was just completely inedible, you couldn't even cut through it. The second time we came for Sunday brunch and, again, it was nothing spectacular. I ordered the chilaquiles and my BF got the lobster benedict. Besides the pork on the chilaquiles, the rest of the dish was completely bland. I ate all the pork and nothing else - and there wasn't even that much pork. The lobster benedict was actually just regular eggs benedict with lobster sauce and a couple of small pieces of lobster - more like a garnish. It really should have been more like crabcake benedict with tons of lobster instead of pork. The pork just didn't work with the dish. The ambience at this place (especially at night) is really nice and the drinks are great, but for the price the food just is NOT worth it. There are so many great restaurants in LA I would skip this place. read more

Really terrible dining experience. The night started off very well. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice and the bar staff were awesome. Once we sat for dinner is when things took a turn for the worst. Our entrees came out after about a 40 minute wait. Then about halfway thru eating dinner one of the waitresses spilled drinks all over two of my friends at the table completely ruining their coats. The manager Rosie Sanchez came over and only offered to comp the drinks that were spilled and never remade and brought to our table and pay for dry cleaning. When asked how could she comp drinks that were never consumed and only spilled, never remade and brought over, she replied that's all I can offer you and there's nothing more I can do for you. She really made us feel like it was on us that the drinks were spilled. At a restaurant of this caliber you would think a situation like this would've have been handled better. Really looked forward to eating at Jar but after this experience I could never eat there again. Customer service didn't stand up to the look and feel of the place. read more
