I just dined at Jar for the first time a few days ago and really, really liked it. I started out with a special. It was a cold salad with parsley, cherry tomatoes, and calamari in a light lemon dressing. It was on the simple side of things, but still was a nice starter. The table also got an order of French fries. They were delicious. They were almost as good as BLD's fries, and that's saying a lot. I loved my salmon that I ordered. The salmon was lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. I asked them to prepare it with no butter and just olive oil. I got some sort of relish for my side sauce, though the salmon did not need it at all it was so delicious. The salmon was also wild Alaskan salmon which is a huge plus. I was intrigued that they served applesauce on the menu and when the waiter told me it was good, I just had to get it. It was actually really good! It was freshly made, warm applesauce with a hint of cinnamon and other spices. Super comforting. My friend got the pot roast. I didn't try any of it but he raved about it. My other friends got lemon chicken and a steak special which they also said were very good. Jar's ambiance was cool for a steakhouse. It was slightly dark, very simple, and very classy. Some people I saw complained about how dark it was, but it did not bother me. I can see how it would be a little too dark for brunch, though. I was so impressed by the waiter. We had six people at our table and did not know that the 20% gratuity charge would be included so we still tipped him. When we were standing outside, waiting for our car he came out and informed us that we made a mistake and had accidentally double tipped him. Very, very cool of him. I really like Jar. I would recommend it to anybody looking for a good steakhouse with a Los Angeles sort of twist. read more

I finally had the chance to have a fine dinning experience at Jar Restaurant. I heard so much about the Chefs Suzanne Tracht and Preech Narktong in the press that I could hardly wait to go with my friends and family to try. The place. itself is quite nice with a few large round tables that seat 10. There is a "L" Shaped Bar with comfortable stools that makes a pleasant place for drinks while you wait for your tables. We started out with the Lobster Cocktail served with oro blanco and avocados in a tangy jalapeno vinaigrette. The flavor was divine. Not spicy at all and so pleasant that all of the flavors melted in my mouth. We also had the obligatory Crab Devilled Eggs which I was not too impressed with. It was just OK and definitely needed added salt. For our main course I'd recommend the Lamb Shank. It is gigantic in size, seasoned with star anise, coriander and garlic. It was SO tender and tasty with a hint of sweetness that was perfect with sauteed pea tendrils. The price was $25, medium price. Also tried my friends Char Sui Pork Chop ($20). The meat was flavorful too. We had Duck Friend Rice which was Delicious and fried to perfection . For dessert I loved the rich and creamy Banana Cream Pie. We bought our own wine and did not mind the $25 corkage fee. So all in all how does this rate? I gave Jars 4 stars as this was up there with some of the best places I have eaten. But not the best so 5 stars was not a possibility. We used our Open Table Discount which made Jars more affordable to me as money does not come easy these days....but what a nice place to splurge and have a fabulous gastronomical experience. read more

Went for Valentine's and was disappointed in many ways. Firstly they pulled out the regular tables and filled the floor with tiny round rental tables and cheap chairs. I was inches from the people next to us, and with the packed house it was so loud you couldn't have a real conversation. The food was disappointing. A very unimaginative fixed 3 course meal, with an ordinary salad, a NY steak that was half fat and gristle, and a cheese cake that was nothing special. To make matters worse they rushed our meal and the moment I took my last bite of dessert, the bill showed up on our table. Based on the huge line at the door, they were ready to refill our seats and keep the cash coming in. A rushed meal is not the way to experience a Valentine's dinner. And did I mention they automatically added a mandatory 20% tip? While i usually tip 20%, I prefer to base it on merit and quality, and in this case I would have dropped it to 15%. But since when do you set a mandatory tip amount for a party of two? I've been to Orsa & Winston, Providence, Baltaire and Firefly in the last month which have all been excellent. Heard some good things about Jar and thought we'd try it. My guess they were taking advantage of Valentine's to cash in. If that was the case, it was the one thing they succeeded at Sunday ... over $300 for a disappointing evening. read more

I came here Saturday night and had a feast. I had cousins in from out of town and this was our nice meal while they were here. I made the reservation plenty in advance to make sure we got in because I've been wanting to try Jar for some time now. After reading reviews and looking at pictures I knew I was going to get a steak, I just didn't know which one. When ordering I chose 3 finalist and asked the server for his recommendation. Of the 3 I named he said hands down prime filet of beef. $42 for a 10 ounce steak is steep but when you're fine dining you gotta splurge! When this work of art was dropped off at my table I knew it was about to be amazing. A perfectly cooked (medium rare of course) cut of meat sliced with ease and was phenomenal! Juicy, flavorful and bold. One of the better steaks I've had in a long time and certainly in LA. We had the crab deviled eggs to start and creamed corn and mashed potatoes as sides with our entrees. Making a bite with steak, creamed corn and mashed potatoes was out of this world good! A wonderful meal and I'm glad my small town cousins got to see what real eating is like in a big city. They had a fantastic time that was highlighted by our meal at Jar. Great steaks and amazing food all around. read more

No..just no. Severely disappointing experience here. I have been in the service industry for many years and I really wish I had better things to say. Our server was frazzled from the start.. his name was Thomas or Tommy or Tommek or something like that. Everybody seemed stressed out. He was sarcastic and condescending and tried to argue with me about something that I ordered. He clearly seemed like he hates his job and I'm not sure what a place with this caliber would have a server like that. I don't think I'll ever be coming back because of my experience. The food was cold and seemed like it had been sitting awhile and that comes back to the waiter.. who I actually saw on his phone while I was on my way to the bathroom. We mentioned our dissatisfaction with a manager and they didn't seem to care as it appeared like this server could do whatever they wanted without repercussion. I can tell you this... NEVER AGAIN! Jar was a pretty great experience. It's been around for over two decades, so it definitely has some history. The vibe in there is fancy and a bit more geared towards an older crowd, but it's a cool spot. Our waiter was decent, but he had a tough time pronouncing some of the menu items, which was pretty funny. The food came out on time, and everything was spaced out well. The food was tasty, although not anything too out of this world. We ordered the rib eye, pot roast, and the evening's special wagyu. Surprisingly, the wagyu was the worst dish, and it definitely wasn't worth the price. The rib eye and pot roast were fantastic, but I was hoping for a bit more pot roast on my plate. Overall, Jar has a cool history, and the food was pretty good. It wasn't my favorite spot, but it was definitely worth checking out. We had a good time and enjoyed most of what we ordered. read more

i've gone 3 or 4 times. 1 time was for a cooking class (demonstration only). It's a great restaurant. Food is great, chef is great, a great place for dinner or the cooking classes. The cooking classes are once a month, and the chef / owner will cook a full 4 course meal in front of you with somalia. And pastry chef will make desert. It's an AMAZING experience. It's like Iron Chef, but you finally get to eat the food! The dinners there aside from the class are great as well. Their menu changes every season based on seasonality of food. Chef does a great job with the meats. Steaks aren't bad, but it's not a steak house, so I wouldn't go for specifically that. Try something more complex, their ribs are great, they have some very intersting other red meats they use. you won't be dissapointed when with a little courage at a place like this. read more

Had a great meal at Jars tonight. Went with a big groups of friends to celebrate a birthday. Meet the chef Suzanne Tracht who was mingling with the crowd early in the night. What impressed us the most was how large and Delicious the portions were. We started with Crab Devil led Eggs which was just fair and not too flavorful. What was really special was the Lamb Shank...oh so large and tender. We had the Sauteed pea tendrils for a side and it was quite tasty. All in all an excellent experience with friendly but a little slow service. The reason I did not give 5 stars was due to the noise.....There was also a party in the bar area that night and between all of the people in the bar and all of the people inside it was a little too loud. We definitely go back for more for our next special occasion. read more

Last night was my husband big birthday celebration with 16 of his closest friends and it was an amazing night. Rosie Sanchez, Jar's Restaurant manager, was a delight to work with, helping us secure the semi private dining area and was extremely helpful with suggested special menu choices for the evening. Rosie answered questions or concerns promptly The night of the event the staff were amazing. Also I really want to give Rachel our server for the evening a special 5 STARS for handling our party of 16. One of our guest is extremely allergic to almonds. She made sure to check with kitchen that the appetizer he ordered was not made anywhere near the other appetizers that contained almonds were made. For a party of 18 i highly recommend Jar. Ho hum. The service from front to back was great. The food unoriginal, and the decor... designed by a 55 year old man digesting steaks at a heart-attack pace. I don't want to say it's bad cause it's not. It's just, don't take a date here. Don't take your mom here. Take some guys here. 10 guys to drink scotch and eat steak. I felt that I was invading a Flinstone Poo-Bah festivity. My date had a steak. It was a steak. I had an unmemorable chicken dish. I won't say the other tables didn't like the place. The guys to our right (all 6 of them and loving their steaks) gave it two thumbs up. I think as a woman I just missed the whole point. So it's not for me but maybe for you guys. I am not into steaks, but because a friend of mine celebrated her birthday and she really loves steaks. So we went to this place last Sunday. My friend has all phrases for this place. So I'm really expecting a very nice experience with this place. But I was very disappointed. I could tell my friend felt ashamed. The waiter did not even apologize with the long wait. We waited for several minutes to be entertained and another several minutes for our food to be served. I don't like the ambiance here too. I feel like I'm wandering in the dark trying to eat my food. Classy place with good service. It feels like it can go date or business meeting either way but more leaning towards big business meeting with politicians stuffing their oversized heads. I digress. I really like the steak a lot. The meat is top notch and their preparation is so tasty. The fries here in my own personal opinion are the bet especially when you dip them in their lobster bearnaise or any of their bearnaise. I love the creamed corn and my husband loves the brussels sprouts. We've done brunch here a few times but dinner definitely steals the show. What stood out was the ribeye. It was flavorful and cooked to perfection.The oysters were fresh and the ponzu sauce that it came with was yummy! The rest of the food was average. The food was "meh." Two redeeming factors: our waiter and the butterscotch pudding with salted caramel. One diner ordered pot roast hash. His gravy, while tasty, was COLD! Two diners had the turkey sandwich which was dull and boring. There was no cranberry relish or mayo or any condiment to spruce it up. Three diners had the lobster and eggs benedict. Two of those dishes had overcooked eggs (they looked like they were hardboiled). Barely any lobster on the plate. If you're going to advertise something as "lobster eggs benedict" - DELIVER. Jar is an upscale restaurant with food that's very, very good but service that is less then amuzing service. The food is for sure the focal point here. It was really beautifully presented and tasted great. I highly recommend getting the Pot Roast (the absolute best thing there), Mashed potatoes, Creamed corn, or the Lemongrass Chicken. The service however was such a disappointment. I've been here before and had a fine experience with service, but one particular time it wasn't great. Watch out for that. The food here is really great, the decor is nice and mod, but the service is a crap shoot. read more

So, Yelp took down a negative review i left, maybe they'll leave up a positive one? I REALLY dug this place. Had some drinks at the bar while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. The sugared nuts and chips were incredible. Drinks were solid, bartender was cool. Service at dinner was very good. The server explained a lot about the menu. I LOVED the pot roast! I debated whether or not I should order something so "boring," but it was delicious. Great appetizers too. We shared the crab eggs, burrata and a salad. Will definitely come back. The place is a bit small, but they have very comfortable chairs. The fries were delicious. The skirt steak was very good and cooked just the way I ordered it. However, the seabass was a bit of a disappointment. It was sliced in half, and I like my seabass thick and whole. Also, the desert (butterscotch pudding) was too sweet. Also, my boyfriend had the banana cream pie, and it had too much whip cream and not enough bananas also it would have tasted better with custard. Overall, this place was just okay. read more

Aside from the wide open space that is the Dining room, this place is awesome. The food was amazing! We started at the bar with cocktails that were tasty and abundant. Very friendly bartender too! I may as well just skip to the best part, the lobster bernaise sauce that I ordered with my bone in New York steak...it is awesome. My wife's pot roast was incredible as well, so tender. I definitely recommend Jar, just don't expect an intimate table, but plan on loving the food! read more
