This is for the sandwiches. The market itself pretty cool as it has a limited amt of grocery items but a butcher area with meat. We ordered pastrami on rye and the Spicy Tri Tip. You can change your bread if you don't like the option listed. The pastrami meat was thinly stacked and not overly salty. The rye bread was OK not too heavily rye tasting. I didn't care for the sauce they put on the bread, it was tangy. Next time, I will just ask for plain mustard. Hubby liked his Tri Tip. I had a bite, it was OK. There's also a section of potato salads where the deli is located in the rear. Most Sandwiches are $12-$13 each. read more

San Francisco has been gaining new businesses recently. There is a place which has a butcher and a deli in the back and a fish market along with bottles of sauce and bottles of wine. This space was formerly known as the Four Seasons Market. It's located in West Portal on West Portal Avenue in San Francisco and it's called Spanglers Market. On a Winter Stroll at West Portal on a Winters Day in January I finally walked inside Spanglers Market. Inside you will find ice cream by the pint and frozen pies. I had to try their sandwiches. I ordered the roast beef sandwich at the deli in the back and it was a bargain for San Francisco standards at $12. The roast beef was fresh and the dutch crunch was soft and overall it was delicious. This place is a must visit if you are looking for the fresh meats for that BBQ or for that Super Bowl party. There is a market in West Portal in San Francisco you should take a "stab " and go to the butcher and request a meat "slab" and this also the place where you can "grab" wild shrimp and Dungeness "crab" The representation in SF has been "murky "so come to the good side of San Francisco to a market which sells $12 sandwiches at the deli like roast beef , Bahn mi ( Banh Mi) and "turkey", and they also have moonbeam cheese for sale which seems kind of "quirky", and also they sell different sauces and "beef jerky" read more

There aren't many places in this area to get a decent sandwich and this place is great for sandwiches. First you pick up a 'Build your own Sando' form and circle the choices you want. You choose from a selection of bread, spread, greens, veggies, meat, cheese and add ons for an extra charge. I like seeing all the choices available. I handed in the form and the sandwich was made fresh and double wrapped. Sandwiches can be heated up but I just got mine cold. The staff even gave me a reward card where you buy 10 and get one free. The sandwich was substantial and definitely sharable, if you're a light eater, plus it's cut in half. The sandwich was filled with turkey meat and avocado. it was delicious. The total was $12 + $1 extra for avocado. This market is very bright, clean and spacious. Although items are limited, you can pretty much get all the necessities, free fruit and veg, and quality meat and dairy. Will be returning when in the neighborhood. IMHO Spangler's is a beautiful new market in West Portal, all shiny and brand-spanking new to the neighborhood. We walked by after having dinner just up the street and were intrigued enough to walk in an hour before they closed. I love neighborhood markets like this. I couldn't be happier with the arrival of Spangler's Market in our local shopping village of West Portal. My husband and I frequent West Portal for coffee, dry cleaning, an occasional dinner, and the post office. I was thrilled to read of their background in fresh fish, which my husband enjoys several times a week. But it doesn't stop there. My meat-loving son-in-law clued me into their marinated meats ( and chicken breasts, butterflied). These items are top of the line. The butcher, John, will guide you if you are unsure. This is a new and welcome addition to the West Portal neighborhood. Once the location of a great toy store, this latest iteration of a grocery store at this storefront is the most ambitious yet. Unlike preceding efforts, Spangler's features a full-service meat and seafood counter that spans the entire east wall of their property. At the back, you will also find a full service deli with prepared salads, and made to order sandwiches on your command. Lots of great freshly baked bread/baguette options too from famous local bakers such as ACME of Berkeley start off the inner aisle ways in this market, followed by a curated selection of sauces, marinades and condiments facing the meat counter. About the only thing lacking here is the limited fresh veggie selection - I think this is on purpose as a nod of respect to the existing produce market just a couple of doors down the street. Kudos! PRO TIP: Try the Homemade Corn Bread they bake here! It's moist and delightful! Friendly staff and a warm welcoming vibe you'll find in this big little grocery! Verdict: Yup.. I'm really digging this little community market/deli. I pop in once a week on my lunch break, it's a new personal ritual, and the sandwiches from the back deli never miss. Honestly, for West Portal, these sandwiches are a straight-up deal. And don't even get me started on their SF-style potato salad. It tastes exactly like those childhood summer BBQs where someone's aunt showed up with the good homemade potato salad--thin potato slices, grated carrots, the whole nostalgic vibe. I swear one bite and I'm 10 years old again. The folks at the deli counter are so nice, even when it's busy, they still manage to acknowledge everyone like. Plus, the shelves are filled with all kinds of snackies and nummies (dangerous for someone like me who can't be trusted unsupervised around snacks, nom nom). Had the pastrami Reuben at Spangler's Market and damn, it did not disappoint. Pastrami was tender, smoky, sauerkraut had the right tang, and the rye? Perfectly toasted. Yay! New holiday menu is out for Thanksgiving. (See attached photos) Service is always friendly, professional, and consistent; family members have been here half a dozen times within the past month (teens-elderly). Sandwiches are consistently fresh, generous, and delicious with interesting sandwiches to try on future visits. This visit, the tri-tip was from the deli case and was warmed up upon ordering. Plus, they have a loyalty sandwich card! (Photo below ) Store is always clean, well lit, and organized. There's a parking lot right next door. This review is for the Cuban sandwich I had. I get it, every place has their version, but as a first generation Cuban American, I'm here to help Spangler's improve. First, dijon mustard isn't meant for Cuban sandwiches. Yellow mustard is used. Second, Ciabatta shouldn't be used. It's WAY too delicate and absorbed all of the mustard and became soggy and gymmy. I had to basically toss the bread and eat the contents. Use French bread and don't put the mustard and swiss together on the bread - it adds to the gumminess. Put the cheese in the middle so it melts properly. Finally, may want to get more sandwich makers and improve your ordering system - make it more systematic so that the people who get there first, get their sandwich first. It took 25 minutes to make this sandwich. I was going to add a 5 star review for the market itself. They have a mix of high-end goodies and basics. This is a lovely addition to the neighborhood and I'm happy to have it within walking distance of my house. read more

Had to post a review to bring some attention to Spangler's on West Portal. We live in the neighborhood and while we love Submarine Center, it's hard to find a lighter, healthy sandwich in the area. This place hits the spot, been twice in two weeks now. The Produce Boy is loaded with fresh veggies and avocado and at $10 is a great price!!
