I remember this being one of our last stops on a trip that I took with some friends up north. The food was so good that each one of my friends tipped the cute lil lady $20. She was a hustler running a tight ship delivering generational excellence.

Solid banh mi place with donuts, pastry puffs. Combination banh mi: lots of pate included with the meats, wish they gave more vegetables. Curry beef chaud: needed more beef, flaky and hot, lots of vegetables of carrots and peas. Friendly couple who runs the no frills establishment. The pastries come out fresh throughout the day. Interior includes some stool seating by the window.

On my morning walk today I thought I'll cross 19th Av and steer myself to get some donuts. Typically I'll get the chocolate twist and an old fashioned. However if the owner happens to come out of the kitchen, he'll ask you if you want to buy some of his hot pork buns. He's a great sales person. Sure. They're called chaud which has Vietnamese origins. I bought the pork ones and the curry beef one. It's layered puff pastries. Flakier than an empanada or a pastie. The pork one contains a nice savory minced pork. The curry beef bun reminded me of à la king mixture. Carrots, peas, onions with bits of beef. I went home with a bag full of donuts and chaud buns. I looked up at the menu board. I noticed their bahn mi sandwiches are now $11.50. #9 on my eat in the 'hood 2026 list.

I love coming here for their meat pies, they have pork & onion, beef curry, and chicken. My favorite is definitely the pork and onion because that's a classic for me. I don't need to go all the way to Oakland Cam Huong since I found out about this place having Vietnamese meat pies! The meat pies are about $4 each. They also sell banh mi and deli sandwiches here. Definitely come check out this mom and pop store for their meat pies!

Stopped by California Bakery today for lunch and loved it. It's a small, family-owned bakery with a cozy, no-frills vibe. We ordered a Vietnamese coffee, two banh mi sandwiches (one combo and one grilled pork), and two donuts (one glazed and one chocolate custard). The banh mi were SOOOO good - flavorful, perfectly balanced, and especially impressive & affordable. The pate on the sandwiches is delicious. The Vietnamese coffee was strong and delicious, and both donuts were tasty. The sandwiches were made fresh upon order, they were able to make it without the jalapeño per our request. Service was quick and friendly. Overall, amazing food, great value, and definitely a spot I'll be coming back to. Highly recommend checking this place out!

I always have a great time here. I have tried their fresh empanadas. I got recommended when they just finished making their fresh empanadas. I enjoyed the egg, red bell peppers, and loved that one. I also enjoyed the tuna sandwich but what I come here for is their bahn mi. I enjoyed the chocolate milk to go with it or like today I'm feeling the coconut water. I usually get the pulp. The owners that work here are so kind! They serve up so well! And I love the neighborhood vibe as it's near the L train and across the Safeways It's a great time! For my day

We stopped by to get my favs: beef curry chaud, BBQ pork buns. The owner asked if I wanted to try the cinnamon twist and I'm glad I did. It was buttery, wasn't too sweet and had the right amount of cinnamon. The BBQ buns had just arrived out of the oven and they were hot, fluffy and delish with ample pork filling. The only thing I didn't buy was the combo pork bahn mi. The price has gone up to $11.50. I'll have to go back another day for the sandwiches.

California Bakery is a small little shop that has a lot to offer. I have been here multiple times now and I have tried their doughnuts, the banh mi sandwiches, and their curry meat pie. All of which were delicious and a must try. I tried the grilled pork and the combo banh mi, both of which were very good; my personal favorite being the combo banh mi. The cashiers each time were nice and the service was quick. If you have the chance to stop by, I would highly recommend.

I've been coming to this neighbourhood favourite for 1.5 years now, and it always hits the spot. I always get a banh mi, which is stacked high with a choice of protein and veggies encased in a fresh, warm, thick baguette. One thing that stood out to me on my last visit and prompted me to update my review is the volume of veggies. Trust me when I say I've tried a LOT of banh mi, but no other place has given as generous a portion of veggies, especially the daikon, as California Bakery, yet doesn't skimp on the protein. The banh mi is the best item here and excellent value.

The combo banh mi-- SO good! Fav in the neighborhood thus far. The bread has always been fresh and the meats plentiful. It's hard to find combo banh mi nowadays done the old school ways like Little Paris (IYKYK!) back in the day with the head cheese with peppercorns (I've learned it's called). Love pate and love that they don't skimp on either. (At some places this would be considered "extra" pate.) $10.95, cash is best. Cute husband and wifey team-- very friendly, they don't laugh at my weird "less Mayo" request. I had some change and wanted to try donut holes. They generously threw in a few extra and wow! Very fluffy and good quality! (Note: a friend mentioned the carrots/add ons weren't pickled enough, I see what they're saying but a good banh mi is hard to come by and I'd rather have lots of meat/pate as a happy trade off in this neighborhood.

Hubs has been craving banh mi and is trying to hit up as many different spots as he can. This time, we tried California Bakery. Although I want to try their other bakery items, we just ordered the banh mi during our visit. We went with the combination, which was filled with veggies, meat and pate. The bread was also light and crispy. Must say, it was a good sandwich and quite filling. The owner was friendly. Can't wait to return to try their other items.

I had passed by it countless times on my bike ride to work without giving it a second thought -- until a co-worker suggested we stop in for lunch. That single visit changed everything. I went with the Hot Pastrami Sandwich, and I still think about that first bite. Made with Boar's Head Top Round Pastrami -- hand-trimmed, rich, and smoky -- it was layered generously and coated with spices that hit all the right notes. The meat had that perfect deli texture, tender yet hearty.. They clearly take pride in what they serve, and it shows in every bite. What makes New College Hill Market even more special is the atmosphere. It's that kind of neighborhood shop where the cashier greets regulars by name, and even if you're new, you feel like you belong. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into this sandwich! But when I took a bite, all I could taste was salt?! I'm not sure if the steak was over seasoned or the Swiss cheese made it salty from being cooked, but I've never had that happen when making a sandwich at home. Since there's no place to eat it at the store, we took it home and tried adding more lettuce and avocado to offset the saltiness, but even that didn't help. By the end of the day, I couldn't get my ring off my finger! It was swollen from the amount of salt in the sandwich because that's the only thing I ate. I drank lots of water, but I became bloated. Next time, I'll nix the cheese and order another kind of sandwich and hopefully have a better experience. 3/5 ROAST BEEF & PASTRAMI W/PROVOLONE CHEESE ON DUTCH CRUNCH ~ this was better than the steak sandwich. My guy had this one. It was salty, but it didn't overpower my tastebuds or the sandwich. I only took a bite to try. 4/5 While jalapeño peppers and pepperoncini are sour, spicy and salty, the meat shouldn't be overwhelmingly salty too then the whole sandwich wouldn't be pleasant to eat. There needs to be something bland to balance it. Now in this steak sandwich, I didn't even add jalapeños or pepperoncini. I only had pickles, onions, lettuce, tomatoes. Yet the salt cut through it all and hit me. I believe someone got overzealous with the salt shaker not realizing it was too much. Of course, the customer finds out after taking a bite! Though I think there should be some quality control in making sure it's done right. Maybe taste testing should be a thing. We may come around again and give them another shot. We really enjoyed it the first time and we were hoping for a repeat, but disappointingly, it didn't go as planned.
