On my morning walk today I thought I'll cross 19th Av and steer myself to get some donuts. Typically I'll get the chocolate twist and an old fashioned. However if the owner happens to come out of the kitchen, he'll ask you if you want to buy some of his hot pork buns. He's a great sales person. Sure. They're called chaud which has Vietnamese origins. I bought the pork ones and the curry beef one. It's layered puff pastries. Flakier than an empanada or a pastie. The pork one contains a nice savory minced pork. The curry beef bun reminded me of à la king mixture. Carrots, peas, onions with bits of beef. I went home with a bag full of donuts and chaud buns. I always come here at lunchtime and order their combo banh mi. It's my go to. I always ask for extra pate, and it's sooo delicious! The flavors are spot on, and the sandwich is always satisfying. Ambiance is same as old donut shop that was located there previously. When i arrived, the staff was welcoming and told me not to worry and can always call ahead to let them know and they will wait and make order while i drive. I really rate this myself as a 3.5. Nothing wrong with it. Fresh, friendly. What nudged it to a 4 was all the police fitting into their stereotype, eating doughnuts. I found it on the Toogoodtogo app. It located about a block of the 28 bus stop and boy, Taravel is alot further south than I thought it was. It is across from the Safeway, and when I was there, there was major street construction going on. The L line now stops at West Portal and you have to take the L bus. That is a hassle. If I was in the area and wanted traditional doughnuts, I'd come here. I guess I was hoping, since someone said it was a Vietnamese bakery, they might have something a little different. I've been looking for a new spot for some bomb Vietnamese sandwiches because my go-to just hasn't been the same. This spot is a bit pricier but I feel that's expected with the recent inflation of everything. The sandwich was still pretty hefty for the price that you pay. I love the amount of pâté they put in the sandwich, the other meats were thinner cuts but still a decent portion. The Viet coffee was strong and definitely gets you going. I didn't get to try any of their donuts or pastries since the sandwiches were my main goal. I'm happy to have found a new Viet sandwich go to spot in the city.
