I was craving coffee during my shift and decided to try this coffee shop right in the middle of Sac State's campus, Java City. The location is a little inconvenient for parking/ handicap, as there aren't garages or spots directly at the location. However, it's a beautiful campus so it's a great excuse to take a stroll if you can. The baristas were super friendly and made conversation with my coworkers and I. Since it's the summer off season, foot traffic is slow on campus. There wasn't a line when we arrived. They have a variety of coffees, teas, and smoothies. They also have several syrups, sweeteners, and milk substitutes. I ordered an iced vanilla latte with oat milk. It was really good! One of the tastier lattes that I have found on campus. Great little spot to enjoy a cup o' joe amongst the tall trees and rolling lawns on the beautlful CSUS campus. Their little patio area is charming and the outdoor seating is fantastic on a brisk sunny day. They could use more seating here, however. The coffee isn't bad for a campus stop. Personally, Peet's will always get top billing in my book, but for what it is -- it does the job. There are food options as well. Last I saw, you could even get granola or oatmeal or something along those lines. I like their frequent drinkers card -- drink so many (I think it is ten?) and the next one is on the house. Peet's doesn't have it (unless you buy it at Raley's)! Neither does Starbucks! La Bou doesn't have one either! Being on campus and all, I know the card will "pay" for itself in no time. Call me cheap, but for my freebie drink, I always splash out and get something outrageous that I would normally never get if I had to actually PAY for it. ACK! Java City in general was the only coffee shop on campus till a Starbucks opened inside the little 'building' that Saigon Bay express was it. But it didn't last very long, because before I could even get a chance to order something from it, they had already switched it to a Java City -- ugh! When this location in particular was being built, it looked like it had so much promise. Such a nice area on campus, lots of outdoor seating, and a nicer decor. But, of course, quality was just the same as any other Java City on campus. Everything and anything was overpriced, and they've gotten my order wrong or have forgotten it more than once. In the end, I end up staying away from here and just getting a coffee/snack somewhere else, before getting onto campus. But I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of one since it it nicer then the other ones on campus, and because of convenience. read more

This cute little coffee spot is the perfect decompressor for the dedicated student. Nestled next to Lassen Hall and the big lawn on the CSU Sacramento campus, Java City offers delicious treats, sweets, coffees and teas to keep the college student or campus visitor happy and energized. They love holiday themes, so right now it is decked out with homely Thanksgiving and autumn decor. There are several tables and benches with umbrellas outside for seating, besides the lawn to throw out a blanket on and take a nap. Inside the shop is just enough room for the lines for coffee, so no indoor tables. Free campus WiFi is accessible, but the coffee shop has no traceable public WiFi of its own. I've ordered a regular black coffee with cream and sugar and a hot chai latte. Both were delicious and I would readily order either again in a heartbeat. This December I can guarantee you that I'll be ordering. Some more holiday-themed lattes and hot chocolate. Go check it out if you are in the area! Overall, a big 4/5! Great coffee spot! read more

Don't go here for coffee. I have never had such bad coffee in my life. I ordered a white mocha. It came out to be around 5 bucks. It tasted like sugar water. I came right back and asked them to do it again. They did. But it still tastes like sugar water. There's no coffee in it. How do I know there's no coffee? The cup is white as hell, no color in it. I then had to buy an extra shot of coffee to add on. Let me tell you it didn't fix it. The problem now is with the recipe. I've never been to any coffee joint where white mocha tastes this badly. I RARELY go to Java City on campus after an incident happened a couple years back. Since I don't want to get into it, all I want to suggest is TO KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS AFTER EVERY PURCHASE YOU MAKE HERE!! If they mess up on your order, which they most likely will, it's your only line of defense for setting them straight and not having them rip you off. Anyway, the coffee here is decent, it's nothing special. The white chocolate mocha here is pretty delicious and is probably the only drink I'd order from here. If you purchase a yogurt parfait, make sure you buy it in the morning (if/when they're freshly made) and eat it right away before the granola gets soggy and yucky. This is the only coffee shop on campus so if you forgot your coffee at home I guess its an OK place to get your coffee fix. I always try to bring my own coffee from home though. read more

I only resort to Java City b/c it is the only coffee shop on campus. I always order the White Mocha. The White Mocha from Starbucks is way better than the one at Java City. Their coffees aren't comparable to Starbucks. Sometimes, the line could be ridicously long. It could take some time until you get your drink. Also, they have stamp cards and after 10 drinks, you get one for free. The Southwestern Chicken sandwich is good, but the bread is very hard to bite through. I usually toast it so it's easier to take a bite. It has chicken, tomato, lettuce, cheddar cheese, and chipotle mayo. The chipotle mayo brings out the flavor of the sandwich. read more

Java City is the brainchild of Tom Weborg. Weborg graduated in 1964 from California State University, Sacramento, with bachelor's degree in marketing. The first cafe opened in 1985 at 18 Street and Capitol Avenue in midtown Sacramento. Expansion was limited and there are now only two locations in Northern California outside of the cafes on the university campus. Most of Java City's success is now tied to distribution at grocery stores and non-chain cafes. The company merged with Campbell Bewley Group, an Ireland-based catering company, in 2000. I was sad to see the Loehmann's Plaza location closed. It was a great place to study and offered free wireless Internet. Sunday nights were even busy. First Covenant Church churchgoers would pack the cafe after celebration festivities in the mid-'90s. I found memories of being a pre-teen afraid of trying a coffee drink and getting an Italian soda instead. It wasn't too long ago that teenagers thought coffee was the domain of adults. Java City offers coffee, espresso drinks, Javalanches, sandwiches, salads, pastries and cookies. Mocha syrup is made with Ghirardelli chocolate. I like Java City espresso drinks more than Starbucks espresso drinks. However, Javalanches are definitely second to Frappuccinos. The large cups for iced drinks and Javalanches are too big. They're too much of a big jump from the medium size. The Roundhouse location is very busy in the morning. The patio seating is nice. The staff is super snobby, but what can you expect from students as staff. Today was just the icing on the cake. It is 3:30pm. I am outside by Lassen Hall, drinking my tea and doing an online quiz. I am sitting at a spot with an umbrella because it has been raining, but lightened up a little when this tall, skinny rude, but pretty, long-haired blonde comes out saying, "you guys need to go, we are closing and I need to put the chair away." I told her, "the lady just came out and told us you closed at 4," when she proceeded to argue, "yeah, but we put up the chairs now." So, I take my sweet time putting all my items away and finish my drink. She starts putting the other chairs away and closes one of the umbrellas. Good spot for coffee on campus. Too busy during "peak times" like 9AM, 1045, ect.... in between classes. They honestly have a pretty good selection of snacks that are relatively healthy. It was a warm afternoon this past Monday and I got out of class early. I was kind of thirsty and was in the mood to drinking something other than water or something from a soda machine to I decided to treat myself to iced soy chai latte at Java City. The girl at the counter was nice but rushed me even though there really wasn't a line. I mean, I can understand from her perspective, I would hate a job like that... but at least act like you like it so you don't make the customers feel uncomfortable for being there. I usually don't mind being rushed, but I felt like she was a little short with me which kind of irritated me. They definitely didn't take long with making it because literally 1 minute later, my name was called and I was delighted to see the already made beverage in my hand, I got the drink, took a sip, and whoever made the drink, made it way too sweet. It was like drinking sugar water concentrate and it literally hurt my throat just taking a sip. I've had other iced soy chai latte's from other java city locations and it never turned out that sweet.. I just couldn't stand it. Some of my fondest memories of CSUS were long hours spent studying on the patio area of Java City. The staff is pretty nice, the selection of drinks and food ranges from decent to large (depending what time of day you get there). Most items on the menu are a little overpriced, but what else do you expect? You can still get a cup of soup, piece of bread and a drink for about $5-6, which is enough for lunch. The inside dining area is medium sized, with at least a dozen tables, but good luck finding an open one. There is, of course, wi-fi but the reception inside is baaaaadddd. It was in fact pretty good, not compared to Starbucks but it was very convenient since I needed my caffeine fix on campus. They were friendly, quick, and efficient. Since there is no Eco Grounds to review under, I recently had some conflicts with this place. Often I walk after class for my typical drink. Java is my new go to place, very friendly people at the location across Lassen Hall. Anyways, I ask for a Large Caramel Macchiato with light ice and no whip cream at Eco. They end up putting more ice than my friend's regular dose of ice. And noticed the same girl who ask for whip, put whip. ..... um... helloo? I reminded her no whip politely, but it was too late and she applied whip already. She didnt even apologize, and I gave up on fixing the whole drink all together and just took it. Another situation is, I simply order the same drink and paid. I waited in line until I realized all those before me have gotten their drink. I ask if they even taken my order. They dont even acknowledge or apologize that I patiently waited for a nonexistent drink I paid for... they never did until I told them they forgot my drink. I'm just thinking I wont be back for a long while. Maybe staff there are unable to function as early as 9 in the morning. read more

I'm so dissapointed with java city right now. Previous time I went to buy a vanilla latte it was very bland, I could barely taste the espresso. This time I tried their iced coffee. Apparently they ran out of iced coffee and they were rebrewing. Instead of telling me and asking if I wanted the hot coffee over ice she did it herself which sctually gave me less coffee and water down my coffee because all my ice melted as well as melting and warping the bottom on my cup. They didn't add the sweetner like the menu stated, creamy iced coffee being lightly sweetened. Its my fourth time at java city and everytime I try something new. I thought maybe I had to ask for it to be sweetened. My iced coffee was just ruined, and I didn't enjoy it. another cashier helped me when I told her my situation and I asked for an iced mocha instead and that ill pay the difference. She insisted that it was okay and she will just remake my drink without paying the difference. That made me happier that she actually cared. I bought a blueberry scone, tasted very stale and old. NOT sure how fresh their pastries are, I'm sure I won't buy pastries anymore from java unless I'm starving. Coffee, unless I'm extremely tired. I really only come here when I'm on campus and I'm too lazy to drive anywhere else. They do have a wide selection of food and drinks here, but the drinks aren't all that great. I've had the Chai, and I've had much better Chai tea from every other coffee place. The chai here reallly sucks. The 'Javalanche' is their version of a frappaucino, and although somewhat tasty; really not worth the money you spend on it. Especially when you get chunks of ice in it :( Regular brewed coffee is okay too. Not the best tasting, but it will do the job. Food selection is decent. My preferred Java City location just because it's relatively easy to gtfo after you get your order (unlike the one at the library). The coffee alone leaves a lot to be desired. I usually get javalanches just because it has things in it that mask the coffee enough to drink and still get my caffeine fix. And I'm not entirely thrilled at the prices of these drinks... The biggest turnoff at Java city is the staff. Every Time I go in there I feel like they don't even pay attention to me. They are too busy talking or whatever. JavaCity is the predominant coffee place to go for a buz on Cal State Sacramento's campus. Similar to starbucks, but instead of the infamous Frappuccinos they have javalanches which is essentially the same thing with an array of flavors. They also have an 'ecogrounds' javacity which is cool to get organic coffee. I always get unsweeten soy chai tea lattes and add my own amount of sweetern which are good. I recently tried a different flavor called Red Mango whole leaf tea latte without the extra sweetener and it was odd tasting. I suggest going full fat/flavor if buying the whole leaf tea lattes. The organic 'ecogrounds' black coffee is always pretty good and full of flavor. Beware of the long lines between 9:30ish - 10:30ish. Moderate/expensive $$$; considering a college student's budget. The markups are not huge. Probably the #1 place to get coffee on campus! :) read more

Located next to the campus library, this Java City is a good spot to grab a bite of studying while you await your next class but other than that it's all but impressive. The coffee tastes less than mediocre and tge food is not good at all. It's nice to have a full service coffee shop right outside my office with a nice patio surrounding it when I get a chance to escape the monotony of my four walls. The kids who work at the Java City "Roundhouse" next to Lassen Hall seem like they're mostly students on a break from their classes, maybe even working split shifts. They play good music inside (usually loudly) although I wish they'd pipe it outside onto the patio for the rest of us. I like their coffee and I love their iced tea but I am completely disappointed by their chai (Bewley's chai is just terrible, I'd much rather have the stuff in the box I can buy at Trader Joe's and make my own rather than order a chai at JC). They sell plain and chocolate dipped rice crispy treats as well as a variety of cellophane wrapped cookies (sometimes they have huge snickerdoodles and they're pretty good). They also sell salads, sandwiches and some snacky-type items like string cheese, granola+yogurt, carrot sticks, etc. Their customers at this location vary between busy students and CSUS employees. I wish they had more tables on the patio since it's hard to get one during great weather like this. I'm not a big fan of the prices although the "Buy 10 get 1 free" cards are valid at this JC as well as all other JC campus locations.
