I wanted to support a local coffee shop this morning so I stopped into Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters before work. Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters in located on Folsom Blvd next to Hilltop Tavern, so street parking is only available. We went early this morning so there was no problem finding parking. I like to check and see if coffee shops have specials and they had a Fall menu with a Pumpkin Chai, a Fall Flat White and a few other choices - I went with an Iced Praline Latte. It was pretty good - not too sweet and strong enough to get my morning going. The inside is nice and minimal - I loved watching the employees make their coffee roasts next door and there were some people sitting at tables and enjoying their coffee. It was a very relaxed vibe. Staff were friendly, but they definitely take their time when making drinks. Luckily, I had some extra time to kill this morning so it wasn't too big of a deal. Chocolate Fish is such an odd, but catchy name, so it makes all the more memorable lol! I did a quick stop here and ordered a Matcha Latte. Personally I don't like my lattes too sweet so I thought they did a good job in making my drink! The Matcha quality is good! My husband had a cappuccino and his was WOW. I had never been here before, but my wife discovered this coffee house while she was on a business trip and asked if I wanted her to bring back some whole beans. I'm glad she did! This location is in little Italy of Sacramento. The place itself is pretty small but very welcoming. I ordered one of their seasonal drinks (cannot remember the name) but it was a mocha with yummy chocolate shavings. I was not overly the top wowed by their drinks. Everyone in our group agreed the drinks all seemed more watery than flavorful. Their food options were great! I love the ambiance of the space. There's so many fun places to sit including outside. Parking was not fun to figure out. This is not really a coffee shop where you want to stay and get a lot to work done. I looked for coffee roasters near my hotel and chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters had what I was looking for. The guidelines I use is someplace that serves white mocha because that's my husband's favorite drink. So looking YELP they listed white mocha and walked over this March morning. They had a selection of muffins, pastries and cookies. Just the ticket! I ordered a monthly special drink, their tiramisu latte iced and a croissant. My drink was exactly what I wanted. There is lots of inside seating and a patio that faces Folsom Blvd. I decided to get coffee beans to take home, and while waiting in line I spotted the menu of foods they can prepare. The inside was what one would expect, with tall seats, cafe seats inside and a large table with benches and a stack of books for kids. Thank you Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters for providing a pleasant breakfast and coffee. I look forward to brewing the coffee beans when I get back to Tucson, Arizona. read more

This is my first visit to Chocolate Fish and I have to say, I loved it! Coming from Seattle where there are boutique cafes on every corner, I have a high bar for great coffee. I typically order an Americano or traditional cappuccino but the seasonal offer of a flat white with chai and nutmeg sounded perfect on this autumn day! Im a sucker for latte art and this cute little pumpkin greeting me did not disappoint! The flat white had the perfect hint of chai without overwhelming the coffee and the sprinkle of nutmeg on top added just the right amount of "extra." I've been to this location a handful of times over the last few years and I was never impressed with this spot, but my experience yesterday was worthy of a review. I visited this cafe with my mom. When we arrived, there was no line, no one waiting for drinks, and only a few patrons sitting inside. We ordered 1 iced latte ($7), 2 cherry on top Matcha's (each $9). While we waited for our drinks, I was watching them being made. The barista making the matcha seemed very into the drink, he was taking his time measuring and getting everything right, which I appreciated. But, it took 10 minutes for him to make, a little long in my opinion. The drink itself was alright, I could not taste the cherry in the cold foam, and the matcha itself had too much milk and not enough ice in it. For $18 for 2 of these, I was expecting to be blown away, and I was not. I get handed the matchas and now a different barista proceeds to make the iced latte. He filled the cup about 85% to the top with only milk, topped it with espresso, and added maybe 7 ice cubes. Anyone who knows how to make a proper iced latte knows that that ratio is completely wrong. I knew the drink would be bad just looking at it, but I took it anyway and handed it to my mom. We walked out, she tried it, and said it literally tasted like nothing, no espresso flavor at all. We spent $27, so I turned around and went back to the counter. I told the women behind the counter that the drink was awful, it had way too much milk, and needed to be made again, with more ice and less milk this time. She handed the order off to the original barista who made the drink initially. He asked what was wrong with it, she said "the customer wants less milk and more ice", and this definetly made him mad. He remade it, slammed the shot glass he was using on the counter, added milk and ice, said "here you go" to me very rudely, no eye contact. Seriously? First, learn how to make a proper latte. Second, don't be rude to customers who are spending their money on an establishment expecting something worthy of drinking. My mom said the latte was still not good, the espresso itself was sour and bitter. We won't be returning. read more

Found this place on Yelp and decided to check it out. Had high expectations because of the good reviews and apparently it's a top rated coffee place in the area. My sister and I decided to get the tiramisu latte and were disappointed. First of all, we got it with oat milk and the total came out to be $10 for each latte. We're from LA, and this is the most expensive latte we've paid for. When we got it, it looked watery and light in color and tasted like watery milk to be honest. Given their name, you could understand my confusion after seeing Chocolate Fish show up in my Yelp results for local coffee shops. It's not to say it's weird for a chocolate shop to serve coffee, but for a hot second there, I thought I had typed in my search incorrectly in my drowsy state of mind. Of course, that's before I realized that this place isn't actually a chocolate shop at all. Which then led to me looking up how they got such a seemingly random name (a chocolate fish is a chocolate confection in New Zealand that is rewarded for a job well done). Which, naturally, piqued my curiosity as to how good this place just might be. I've got to say - I didn't figure that falling down a rabbit hole would end up dictating where I'd end up getting coffee to start my day! Now, almost immediately after stepping inside, I felt pretty optimistic about my chances here. While there isn't a ton of seating relative to its size, the look of this place is great - the decor is modern, the vibe is cozy, and there is coffee roasting set-up sits in the open for everyone to see. As for the menu, it's pretty straight forward, with its half dozen or so varieties of espresso, handful of coffees and cold brews, "down under' options, and teas. They also have a smattering of sourdough toast offerings and some baked goodies in their display case, but be aware it's all generally lighter coffee shop fare, in case you're looking for something more substantial to eat. -- SMASHED AVO TOAST - Avocado, EVOO, Lemon, Salt & Pepper on Sourdough Bread with an Egg (+$2) As decent as it looked, this was pretty underwhelming. The eggs were nicely cooked and there was a decent amount of avocado, but there was a smidge too much salt and it was barely toasted, if at all - super pale in color and lacking that toasted texture. -- NITRO COFFEE - Nitrogenated Japanese-style Flashed Brewed Iced Coffee Not amazing, but not bad either. The coffee had a smooth consistency and it didn't taste all that bitter. Most importantly, it had a nice caffeine kick to it, as it definitely perked me up a bit. -- LAVENDER FIELDS LATTE - Ghiradelli White Mocha with Lavender I didn't try much of this one, but what I did have was just okay. To me, it felt more like a regular white mocha/latte, as the lavender felt very subtle. Still, it was pretty refreshing on such a hot day. -- MINT MATCHA - Matcha Latte Sweetened with Mint The description of this sounded both interesting and odd while the taste of it landed somewhere in the middle. The blend of the mint and matcha was a little funky in the beginning, but it was fine a few sips in. Still, I'd prefer a plain matcha instead. While the coffees and toast were a bit of a mixed bag, service here is pretty solid. All of the workers who helped us were quite nice and fairly efficient in preparing our orders. Despite how great it was, though, I can't say it's enough for me to round up from THREE AND A HALF STARS. None of it is to say that Chocolate Fish is bad, especially since the most "traditional" drink I've tried is by far the best. It's just that while others have clearly had great experiences here, and despite how this place is definitely worth trying, I personally might be more inclined to head to the likes of Temple instead. read more

Quite smooth and toasty coffee brew taste buuut with no distinct funky/fruity flavor notes. Straightforward quality. There is hot chocolate available for youngins. :p Can't really recommend the things that I tried from the bakery case (oatmeal raisin cookie, peanut butter cookie, banana chocolate chip bread) as they were cold and a bit stale-crumbly. Huge props to the baristas maintaining a zen state focusing on making drinks with the extremely echoey interior. I was starting to get antsy in the ordering line because of the amplified sharp voices from all of the other patrons. Parking is not the greatest but not too difficult. Was craving coffee after a Trader Joe's run and happened to stumble upon this place. The staff were definitely helpful upon entering and helping with drink options. They also offer 10% percent off is you are a student which is a great perk. Prices are what you'd expect for a typical local coffee shop however; it's definitely worth it. I got a mocha and matcha latte which were both delicious! Almost a perfect balance between coffee and sweeteners. Came early for a skills class at the Med Center and had an hour of downtime. Walked 15 minutes from UCD to get to this roastery. The coffeeshop had two community tables and a couple of tables for two or three. Bags of raw beans were stacked where the coffee roaster was on the side, which probably took half of the real estate. Ordered a 12 oz Latte and Smashed Avo on Toast with the Works, which meant sourdough, avocado, EVOO, lemon w/ radish, sprouts, and nut dukkha. Coffee and open faced sandwich were both good. Can't really complain about the prices as that's just how they are. I was curious at the coffee beans on deck and wondered why they weren't classified as to roast type (blonde, medium and dark) but were packaged according to sweetness and acidity. The barista asked me if I had any questions as I was exiting the premises. She informed me that the beans were mostly roasted medium and confirmed that they were bagged according to characteristic.
