I felt like I was back in Berkeley, CA. So eccentric! Made me a little home sick even. The barista didn't blink an eye when I ordered an ice soy dirty hippie. *high five* For those of you who don't know, that is the same as an ice chai latte made with soy milk and they add a shot of espresso. Yah, you know you want one now too. It was also really conveniently located near the Snorkel Bobs where I rented equipment so I could meet my new turtle friend. While cruising around Ka'anapali, we came across this quirky little gem of a brekkie spot and decided to check it out. It turns out that this was one of the more memorable meals I had while in Maui. And it wasn't really the food that made the meal memorable, even though my Hawaiian omelette and my table mate's Hawaiian sweet bread french toast were both equally tasty. It was the character of this little "brekkie all day, club at night" hole-in-the-wall that left a lasting impression. The moment you walk in, you're surrounded by their eclectic mix of danceable world music and eccentric knick knacks hanging out all over the place. And then you realize that each polaroid photo plastering the walls throughout the restaurant are photos of former patrons that also fell in love with the restaurant. This is the kind of place that is just a little off kilter and makes me feel right at home. I visited back in July (3rd time & well before I became a yelper) as we were CRAVING freshly brewed Hawaiian coffee. Along our venture, we stumbled upon a little local favorite: Java Jazz. Upon walking into this fabulously quaint restaurant/bistro/coffee shop, I was hooked. I've never seen such a more lively, cozy and welcoming place. I love the locals and me, being the personable creature I am, am really confused as to why people think the staff had attitudes. Clearly, I beg to differ. I ordered a medium latte TWICE during my stay accompanied with a chocolate chip muffin and both were heavenly. Honestly. I talked with the owner about simple getting-to -know-you topics as well as meeting my new best friend (for protecting identity I will abbreviate her name) "C". Who know one would make a new and long life friend while vacationing? All in all, this place is unbeatable.The decor - flawless and unique. They have what's similar to a journal (diary if you will) where anyone and everyone is more then welcome to write about their trip, feelings, draw, write poetry, scribble lyrics to music, letters to lovers, break up advice, etc. I mean this book is filled with any and every topic under the sun. I feel they should laminate it one day. Also there are drawings around the entire coffee bistro created by young little soon-to-be Van Gough. If you are visiting this majestic island, please do yourself a favor and visit this wonderful and amazing establishment. This seems like a very cool place, and we ended up having a decent breakfast here, along with superb mochas, however.... the service was the worst I have encountered in my entire life. In addition to totally ignoring (and I mean not acknowledging us, and our questions about where to place an order, and later where the restroom was). I assumed he was just feeling overwhelmed and stressed, so tried to just manage on our own, with suggestions from neighboring customers. The most shocking was when my husband witnessed him actually cursing out customers that were seated outside, at their table, without their masks on. Came for breakfast. French toast had a very thin coating of egg batter, more like griddled bread only. Kinda dry inside, meaning the bread wasn't soaked long enough. The cream cheese is not stuffed into the bread or melted inside, but just 2 slabs laid on top. Certainly not visually appealing. The loco moco came with raw onions, not sautéed as described in menu. Very bland flavor. Eggs were over cooked, but hamburger patty was nice and thick. Overall, a very disappointing breakfast, especially for their expensive prices. Plate had about 5 small pieces of lettuce on it like they'd started a salad and changed their mind. Grilled Chicken on Spinach salad was delicious and cooked the right way. Never had Earl Grey Iced Tea before. That was interesting. Service excruciating. Three employees scurrying around caring for locals, chatting and being helpful. Java Jazz I have fallen out of love with you. Our breakfast dining experience was a fiasco! When you order breakfast at a coffee house what do you want first? COFFEE. We received our coffee after our breakfast was served. Other customers were waving their coffee cups to get refills. In addition to the fiasco our server was very unsanitary! She carried the toast to our table with her bare hands! Then we happen to notice she was buttering other toast and picking it up with her bare hands, after cleaning dirty tables and handling money. All of our egg dishes had undercooked snotty egg whites. We just wanted to get out of there. Java Jazz, you lost a lot business on our last trip to Maui. There were main landers working there and the ambiance was more like what I am used to in NYC. So not saying I need kitschy Hawaiian ambiance because I loved Tasty Crust and it had no ambiance at all but Java Jazz though good was nothing I can't get on the main land. They did have a Portuguese breakfast. But other than that if on vacation from NYC it is not a place I would go out of my way to eat at only because I can get what they serve here in NYC for the most part. But if you are staying in the area it's not bad. But with limited time I want to hit up all of the best spots. This was just mediocre. Service wasn't bad at all. Food wasn't bad at all just not unique. I had apple pancakes which I can pretty much get anywhere. They were good but not what I wanted while on Maui. I did not have coffee my husband had Kona but he said it was a little weak. Maybe it was an off day? The pancakes were good but like I said nothing I can't get on the mainland. The Kona coffee we can't get here but you can get it any where on the island. My husband said it was weak when we went. I had something else to drink I don't remember what, But I tasted his and decided against it. Now they do something really unique and that I admire. This is from their web site. Java Jazz brings Purple Heart soldiers from the Iraq and Afhganistan war to Maui for an all paid 7 day vacation. We cannot delete the memory of the unwanted war from their memory bank but we sure can install new happy memories and that's the least we can do for our veterans. Come for the atmosphere, skip the food. Breakfast left lots to be desired- One server in the whole place and he never checked in, never refilled drinks, had to go to bar to try to pay bill. Bonnie's omelet was super lame- cold potatoes, soggy toast, flavorless omelette. Steak and eggs- unbelievably dry, flavorless, and largely inedible Black ended fish sandwich- really fishy and did not taste fresh. This bizarre place actually becomes one of my favorite on Maui!? We came here consecutively (dinner, then next day breakfast), and very satisfied both times. My favorite loco moco on Maui...! One of us even ordered it again next morning, that's how good it was. The food was delicious, beautifully plated--pretty formal as well, definitely not rustic diner style if you order seafood or steak,etc--and reasonably priced. There are nightly(?) live Jazz performance! It wasn't too crowded when we were there, very relaxing with friendly service and nice ambience. As for breakfast, they have their own coffee beans! There was a breakfast special that the earlier you are the cheaper it is, a reward for waking up early :P The pancake was bigger than my face, very fluffy. We were really hungry and there was no way to finish it all). 2 big meals, 1 coffee, 1 OJ, and 1 pancake were only $1 more than the cost for 1 person to eat at the hotel buffet. We had: Huevos rancheros (no meat, scrambled eggs). Lots of good flavor. Grilled veggies, black beans. if you cant decide, get this! Flavor all the way through each potato bite, didn't even need salt. I wish I'd tried them before eating everything else : ) 1 pancake: when we think if pancake we imagine one the size of a coffee saucer. Not this! It was fully the size of a dinner plate, thick and fluffy!! Biggest pancake I've ever seen! The decor is very odd - busy and quirky - and it's in a strip mall and kind of hard to find with apple maps, but I don't think those should discourage eating here. I just adore this place, it just has this great warm , welcoming feeling the minute you sit down. It is across from the condos wedd stayed in, the outside doesn't look like a place you'd wanna go into, but once inside, it's a whole different feeling, my boyfriend had a hamburger and fries he was quite pleased, I had the Asian chicken salad, it was great, the dressing had a little "kick" to it but very good, the staff was friendly. Love this place. Love the vibe. Love the food. Love the coffee. My fiance and I found Java Jazz several years ago and we continue to come back when we are on the island. We have never had to wait for a table, and the food is always consistent. The best part of this place is the awesome coffee. I give this place credit for turning me into a coffee snob. The decor is quite unique. You just have to experience it to understand what I'm talking about. The music and acoustics may be an issue for those hard of hearing, but there are tables available outside (it's just a strip mall folks, so it's nothing special) if you'd like. My advice: the first full day when you arrive in Maui, make a morning reservation at the Zen Massage spa next door, then walk over and have breakfast & coffee here. It'll be a great relaxing start to your Maui vacay. Enjoy! read more

We had breakfast there on our last morning in paradise before heading back to reality. My friend had french toast on that yummy Hawaiian sweet bread with some fruit on top. I tried a bite, it was good, but crazy sweet. She loved it. I had some kind of veggie omelet. So good. Loaded with fresh veggies and super fresh. The portions were really big, we couldn't finish it. The people that worked there were all so nice, and made me sad that we didn't try it sooner! If I'm ever back in Maui (which I hope I am!) I will definitely be back! read more

Despite being walking distance from where we were staying, this was our last meal in Maui. We are huge fans of breakfast, but most mornings we had plans so we didn't eat out. This time, breakfast was the goal so we turned to Yelp for a little help. It got decent reviews and was close by so we decided to check it out. The place was pretty mellow. They have a handful of tables and coffee bar. There were a number of people that seemed to be locals that came in for coffee while we ate. Like some of the other reviews have said, the music was a little on the loud side, which was surprising for 8 in the morning, but it wasn't loud enough to bother us. The food itself was good. We had the french toast based on another review and we weren't disappointed. I expected it to be "stuffed" with cream cheese instead of just having some on top, but it was still good and the sweet Hawaiian bread just added to it. D had a burger which was one of the better burgers we've had on the island and E had some noodles. They also advertise to have "the best smoothies in the world" and E agreed it was the best we had on our whole vacation. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. As others have said, the decor was pretty interesting and they were pretty kid friendly. I think if we were in the area, we'd definitely stop by again. read more

I just had breakfast there and got the Hawaiian omelet with no cheese...so it's basically pineapple, ham, and onions. The eggs were very over cooked It was okay at first but it at a weird sour taste. I open it up and taste each of the ingredients. Yep, the HAM WAS OLD. It had a disgusting fermented taste. I told the waitress very nicely who took my plate and walked off while I was in mid sentence saying it tastes like old ham. She came back with a bad attitude as if she's heard this before. When I said, "ya it just tastes old, like a fermented taste. You know?" And she rudely replied, "ugh no in dont eat meat" and then she had a snotty laugh. The manager came by to give us the bill and never said a word, not even an I'm sorry! The only good thing was the food came or fast and the potatoes were good...greasy..but good. Breakfast dishes in the $9-13 range. There was a gal on the other side of the counter who could see us, was only 2 feet away from us, and yet never made eye contact or talked to us. We stood there for 15 minutes with no acknowledgment. We were debating going anywhere else when a server walked by and asked if we had been helped. (No) She walked away. 5 minutes later, the girl behind the counter asked if she could help us. She informed us that we should sit at any table and a server would be with us. Hmmm, you think she could have checked in and told us that 20 minutes ago? Or maybe the gal that walked by? When we sat down, we were promptly given menus and our order taken. Latte was good. I had the frittata omelet with hash browns and toast. Real potato wedges, but sadly no flavor. Boyfriend had the French toast with cream cheese and raspberry sauce. I guess we didn't expect it to be regular French toast with rectangular slices of cream cheese cut right from the block with run of the mill fruit syrup. He carefully took the first bite to make sure it wasn't giant dabs of butter. Palatable, but nothing special. Overall food rating is two stars. Very bland. Coffee and lattes were good. The server brought is our chck and we quickly put our card in. She then forgot about us for a good 10-15 minutes. We joked about acting like we were going to walk out without paying just to get someone's attention to check us out. Overall, horrible service, mediocre at best food, too much time for a crummy $40 breakfast for 2. We went here to avoid the long wait that folks talked about at the other high rating breakfast spot that was close. We would have been better off just going there. read more

Went here on a Thursday night for dessert and coffee. Ordered the tiramisu and two mochas. I'm not sure it would be appropriate to call what we received a tiramisu or mochas. For the tiramisu, it seemed they didn't soak lady fingers and maybe there wasn't enough marscapone. Not sure what was going on. The flavor was fine, but this was more a cake that had tiramisu flavors. As for the mochas, they affirmatively were terrible. I took two sips and left the rest. I'm pretty sure we paid $4.25 each and what we got was coffee with some milk and hot cocoa powder because when we walked out, it was clear that the espresso machines had already been cleaned and turned off for the night. I suspect our experience was not typical, but given our experience with the mochas (which they should have just said wasn't available), I can't imagine coming back. read more

Really nice place with plenty of interesting decor to admire. I ordered a veggie omelet and substituted feta cheese for the green pepper. Also an iced chai latte. It was all excellent! The vegetables were fresh and flavorful. The potatoes were crispy and nicely seasoned, but not overpowering. Best thing about this place is there are plenty of lovely vegetarian options, which I struggle to find in Hawaii. Breakfast is served all day-another hard to find option. Music was nice and they have live music 7-10pm. Definitely check this place out if you're a breakfast fanatic like me, but there's something to please everyone on the menu! read more

Yes, this is a very funky joint, very eclectic and it IS an odd find on Maui! But the coffee is to die for and the owner and staff are very friendly and personable. The place has two entrances/exits and is shaped like a horseshoe of sorts. You can walk in through the door on the right and you're at the coffee bar. You continue walking toward the back and there are the restrooms and a small area for jazz performers to do their thing. Keep walking 'round the U and you're in the bar area, and out the other door. Tables and seating throughout. Polaroid pics of the guests and staff adorn the walls; a cage with a menagerie of strangely entwined Barbie dolls in it hangs from the ceiling; eclectic artwork here there and everywhere; an indoor waterfall in the corner upon entry; fake plants; just "stuff" that adds a ton of character to the place. It definitely has a flavor all on its own - very funky, but so laid back...that's what Hawaii is all about. Went there for breakfast a couple of times, and yes, it was a bit overpriced, but it's Maui. Went there for coffee every morning, it was just a short stroll from where I was staying. It was a very comfortable atmosphere. If you're looking to have a "Denny's" meal in a diner-type place - fuggeddabowdit! This is not the place! At night they have jazz performers, which is something to take in if you're in a laid back mood and into having some mellow entertainment. The cocktails are great. Just a nice place to call 'home' in the mornings. A nice stroll, good coffee, friendly cops to chat with as you're sitting outside enjoying your latte...then mosey on back to the hotel.
