Came by Java Man this morning for some coffee and a Bfast burrito. The Bfast burritos are already made and thrown into the microwave. I wanted a Bfast burrito with no cheese and that was not an option=( The place was jam packed with people, but that was to be expected, this is Hermosa and it is nice out. Outside there were plenty of folks enjoying the morning sun with their dogs. We found an empty table outside next to a retired NHL hockey player who I expected to be bigger in person. As I checked in an offer came up of a free Jumbo sized cookie with a drink purchase it was still early so no cookies were made but Yelp allowed me to save it for later. It's more like a small house, with chairs, tables, and a service area all crammed in. Tried the iced latte. They actually pulled out a little pitcher with coffee already iced. Not sure if it is chilled espresso shots or just your iced coffee. Had some other espresso drinks, and it's not bad. $5 minimum for card, parking is mostly meter, which can be a pain. read more

I feel this way I always feel about coffee anywhere other than Spain: I don't like it, but I do. I come here... All the time. So this review is based on about 20ish visits (most pretty recently, but a few were 3+ years ago) I think I have a pretty good take on the earlier-morning, midweek vibe here. -1 Star -- Parking. Yup, parking is a beeyatch. Make sure you plug in those nickels, or park about 2 blocks away in the freebie 2 hour street parking and then put your timer on as HB ticket-writers are vicious! +1 Star -- Baked Goods. Why in the name of corporate greed would you buy that sawdust muffin at Starbutts when you can get the Morning Glory or Razzleberry or a bundle other good muffins (and more) here? And they have low-fat too, if you care (I don't. Well, I do. Hypocrite! I know!) +1 Star -- Refills for 25cents for regular joe. So you can stay and surf the free wifi for less than $2 a day! +1 Star -- Peace and Quiet. I don't want to hear your damn cell phone conversation and I won't bore you with mine here, as they have a policy (on little cards around the place) asking you to take your loud mouth (and mine) outside. +1 Star -- Bathroom. It's for customers only. So it's relatively clean, compared to chain stores just down the block. Viruses can live 17 days on a $1 bill, so just imagine about the loo. +1 Star -- Spanish. I get to eavesdrop on the Spanish-speaking counter guys cos they think we white beach cities ladies don't speak it. These guys are hilarious. Love em. +1 Star -- Locals. Lots of locals. But have yet to see the scores of hunky single guys here I was hoping to see (research purposes, of course). There was a time when Java Man was the only coffee game in town. Guess it went to their heads, because they've done absolutely nothing to improve their service, quality or interior. This should be a really great independent, but they've dropped the ball. Luckily, they scored huge when Pier Ave. we renovated: now the front of the place has a much improved sitting area. It's a great place to sit and watch Hermosa go by. But rather than coffee, you'd be better off having some of their decent baked goods and call it a day. read more

I love this place! The people working here are really nice, and they have a huge variety that caters to almost everybody! They have coconut, almond, and soy milk as options, as well as heavy cream for me! They also make both traditional and Mexican hot chocolate. Yum! Went in and while it looked alright, there were flies near the milk, cream (which was placed near the window) and the place felt very hot and humid. 2/5 Service: n/a - order at counter and I got it to go. This little house-turned- coffee shop is a great place to hang out or study - mins away from the beach, up the hill on Pier Ave. They have tables along the wide sidewalk if you want to soak in some rays and lots of people bring their dogs here (Free treats for them inside!) The minute you walk in you are greeted by the most jolly and cheerful baristas (owners?) - they know the regulars by name and even let you pay when you leave if you are going to be staying for a while. (some times they got carried away and can be a bit loud when they are talking). The "living room" is divided up by tables or all sizes so if you are a solo-studier or you came with your posse - there's a space for you. There's a smaller room that has comfy- worn couches and armchairs- perfect for curling up in with a book and some tea or coffee. You do feel like you are in a home- if only my apt was this comfy and cozy i wouldn't need to escape to cafes like Java Man. Inside and the furniture may be a bit shabby for some people's liking but I appreciated the "real-ness" of it. I have to admit though most of the stars go to the place, the drinks were disappointing. I got one of their "special" coffees drinks that sounded more like dessert than coffee (White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle??!?) -$5 and it was overly sweet and had a weird aftertaste, I didn't bother finishing it. This place provided a great study environment and wasn't too crowded - I'd come here again but I'd think carefully of what to order. I adore this local coffee shop. It is so much better supporting local mom & pop shops than huge corporations, like Starbucks, that push local shops out of business. Java Man gives back to the community. Starbucks, not so much. This place is great. I do have to admit. I'm not a coffee drinker. I do drink tea and Java Man has delicious iced teas. When friends and family coffee drinkers come to visit me, they'll walk down to Java Man in the morning for their cup of joe. My sister loved it so much more than Starbucks, she bought some coffee grinds home with her. Java Man is owned by Ocean Diner, a mile up the road. The pastries are always really good. I'm a sucker for the cinnamon crunch coffee cake. Their pecan bars are also delicious. They often have a sample of one of the pastries out on the counter for you to try. Share the goodness. I always hit up Java Man for lunch to answer work emails, and catch up on life. I'll order one of their panini's or sandwiches. Tuna has been fresh, bread is fresh. One time the tuna wasn't fresh and the guy behind the counter told me. I liked his honesty. The chicken pesto panini is really good too. Sandwiches come with a bag of Lay's potato chips and an apple. Decent for $10. It is so rare you get a full school lunch for under $10 anywhere anymore, and a great tasting one nonetheless. Oh, yes, for breakfast, they have the infamous breakfast burrito. Those sell out fast, so you gotta get there fairly early to get your hands on one. One of the things I love about Java man is the energy. It is such a great place to get work done, to study, people watch, or to just read a book and chill out. It is located on Pier Ave, in the middle of all the local businesses, so there are a lot to look at. There is not a parking lot, however, there are a few 15 minute parking spots in front of the building, as the rest of the parking spots are all metered. It is Hermosa, so make sure the meter is paid for, or you will come out to a ticket under your windshield wiper. Java Man sits on the corner of Pier Ave & Manhattan Ave in an old, yet refinished beach cottage. There are chairs and umbrellas on the patio/sidewalk outside if you want to soak in the sun. I love that they didn't knock any walls down in the cottage. There are plenty of seats and room for you to sit w/your computer. There are large tables, sofas, chairs and coffee tables inside all 3 main sitting areas. There are also quite a few electrical outlets to plug in/charge up. Free wi-fi when you make a purchase. I've sat there for an entire afternoon working on my computer. Most often, I am sitting among many local business men & women sitting on their computers, answering work emails, and students with their study groups. It's pretty quiet too. The staff is generally nice and friendly. Same guys have been working there for years. Pretty honest too when it comes to the food. I also love that they cut out the daily horoscope each day and post it to the counter. It's a little fun read while they are ringing you up. Keep up the great work Java Man. It's a coffee shop that serves decent coffee and provides a quiet space to study... except why would you study at the beach when you can just go to the beach and do beachy things. Just kidding, education is important; they have couches and tables and a whole lot of decorations that make the place quite homey and comfortable. They take the quiet space very seriously, so if you have phone calls to make, do take it outside (as indicated by the sign) and there is a restroom in the far back if you ask. Everyone who works here is very nice and offers great suggestions, so whatever you end up getting here, it'll be great! Along with a wide variety of coffee selections, they also serve food to compliment your coffee; why not eat lunch while you study right? One of the best places to study. It is VERY quiet and they even have signs saying something along the lines of, "if you have a phone call take it outside." Most people are in here getting work done so you feel the need to get your work done also. There are a lot of tables and a few couches. We stopped into Java Man as we needed a pick me up this afternoon while walking down to the Hermosa pier. When we walked in, we were greeted immediately by two gentlemen. The coffee tasted almost like a South American blend. Two iced coffees were around $6 dollars, which was reasonable. There was a bar area next to the door with maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, half and half, etc. you could add to your drink. Nice, cozy coffee shop on Pier Ave close to most local attractions including the beach and pier. It gets quite busy at Java Man, no doubt due in part to the sheer dearth of available options in the area. That will inevitably change. The coffee at Java Man is decent but short of good. An apt description would be that it is diner coffee, strong and full-bodied, on the darker side, and almost certainly a blend. It's likely a South/Central American blend, not a source of delicate flavors but more utilitarian. The food at JM is popular it seems. Their muffins and pastries are baked locally and brought in early. The "morning glory" is a popular favorite and it is tasty. The breakfast burritos appear to be a good option and are affordable but don't expect the same ingredients one would get almost anywhere else. Your burrito will be a hot tortilla filled with fresh scrambled eggs and bacon only. All in all, I find JM appropriate to this area. More style than substance, utilitarian, reliable. read more

We ride our bikes here sometimes on Sundays. Good coffee. Good pastries (but sometimes too big and too sweet for me, yet I eat them. Hmmm....) Good outdoor seating, although we sit inside. We've never had the 'screaming barristas' problem that others mention. I like the comfortable and cozy setting of this indie coffee house. The building used to be a small house before it was converted. They've got sofas and tables and chairs which is good to hang out for a couple of hours surfing the internet on the free wifi they provide. I happen to be there the weekend before Halloween so I enjoyed watching all the peeps passing by in their getups! The coffee is pretty much status quo but they do seem to have a lot of tasty looking baked goods in the display case. I did buy a chocolate chip cookie to justify using the free wifie but it was really dry and not moist like I like them. Somebody, give them a moist cookie recipe, please! The barista informed me that they were cutting their hours and closing at 6:00 pm starting next week instead of the usual 11:00 pm due to a slump in business. In fact, the owner called to shut the place down and it was 10:30 pm so they shooed everybody out. If we locals want to keep this coffee house open and not be at the mercy of the mega chains, I'd suggest we all try to frequent the place every once in a while. My buddy said we were going for breakfast burritos and coffee and I was on board! Java Man is pretty tight spot and has a Locals Only feel to it but do not be intimidated! There is a "grab and go" feel but slow down and you can do it. My buddy had the chorizo burrito and I had the Turkey. He LOVES his as he goes semi-regularly and I Loved mine too, fantastic salsa. They are modest sized, but sometimes you don't need a huge breakfast and the price is spot on at under $5. Word to the wise, I was in need of a large iced coffee and was not made aware that large is really JUMBO, so look at the size chart before ordering. They have all the coffee fixing so no worries.
