Having recently moved down to LA from San Francisco, I'm having fun getting to know the coffeehouses. Service. This is my third visit here. I'll admit, I'm sometimes caught offguard and startled a bit when someone speaks in a loud voice. It's tight quarters at the front counter, and you'll likely be greeted as soon as you step in. That said, with every visit they've been warm, lively and upbeat. Coffee. It's been refreshing every time. I will say, I prefer less ice in my cup, to avoid watering down my coffee. I'm a slow sipper :) Not a big deal, I'll probably ask for less ice next time. That said, the coffee seems quite decent. I haven't yet asked about their source of beans. It definitely hits the spot on hot, summer days like today. Ambiance and Environment. There's a little patio outside, but it's always been a bit too bright for me. Inside, the light levels are just right. If you have an appreciation for quaint, older buildings ("older" as in maybe early-mid 20th Century), I have a feeling you'll appreciate Java Man. With weathered wooden floors, walls painted in cool, and muted beachy tones - it feels very home-y. There are 3 rooms, seating can be a bit cozy, but the warmth and comfort of the lived-in feel make up for all of that. There's a good selection of cutely mismatched tables, couches and chairs. As far as room temperature is concerned - it can get a bit warm. Fortunately, they seem to keep a steady breeze circulating throughout, so things aren't stagnant. This place seems to pull in a nice, mellow group of people here. I think this will be one of my regular cafes. Overall, I'm giving this place 4 stars. read more

Why is Java Man such a lovely place to hang out?? I'm not sure if I can put my finger on it but I will try. The baristas are generally in a good mood and quite friendly. The location is quite perfect, right in the heart of Hermosa Beach, and just about a block from the beach. They have a large selection of hot and cold drinks, baked items, and even breakfast burritos, bagels, sandwiches, etc. One of the things I like best is how cozy it feels to me inside the cafe, with lots of little mismatched wood tables and chairs and a very chill, down to earth vibe. They've also got outdoor seating and umbrellas, as well. It's just a perfect place to gather with friends, have a coffee, read a book, and settle in and work on your laptop. I actually travel from the next city over since I have tried over 15 cafes in the South Bay area and this is the ONLY one I truly enjoy and feel relaxed in. =) read more

We were waiting to meet up with friends, so we decided to wait out at Java Man. I liked my chai tea latte, and my friend had a really good iced coffee. I wish I'd gotten that. There's some seating indoors, and a few tables outside too. It's cute, but nothing special. I'll probably go back if I'm in the area and in need of coffee. Tip: They do have a little bathroom in the back. Ask them where it is because it's a little hard to find. read more

Delicious! I've only been twice, but I ordered the most refreshing drink, the blended caramel latte and later the blended mocha. It reminded me of a Starbucks Frappuccino, but even better. I have a company volleyball tournament on the beach bright and early this morning at 10 am. I haven't been to Hermosa before, and was grousing I would have to give all my coffee money to Starbucks. My consternation grew with every mile closer to the beach. When the Uber took an unexpected turn, I noticed a cheerful coffeeshop that commensurated with my hopes of a half decent breakfast. I asked the driver to end the trip. And seethed as I got out and crossed the road. I hold alot of credulity in my fellow yelper recommendations and in my usual fashion, there was the impetuous desire to check the Yelp Highlightz. 'Breakfast Burrito...get it while supplies last' wrote one comrade. The staffer informed me there was no paucity in the menu and so I opted for the burrito as opposed to the more salubrious items on display. The salsa is fresh and sublime. Java Man is a laudable spot in the South Bay. When in Hermosa, one must strut sagaciously. I goad you to try this place. read more

The surly man behind the counter needs a new attitude. I realized after not having enough cash that it was a $5 minimum for cards so since I wasn't familiar with the place, the menu, or the prices and was hoping for an in-n-out experience, I asked him to just pick something out to make $5. This resulted in him moving to the next customer, then me having to repeat myself, then me just throwing a rice krispie treat down. It was a total of $4.95, which he rounded up to $5 and finally sent me on my way. I sat outside and played some jams loudly while taking in the Hermosa scene and I must say that that was this place's saving grace. read more

A true coffee place for java lovers.

I dig this place! I like the comfortable setting of this indie coffee house, it feels like someone opened their surf bungalow, which they did, the building was once a small house before it was converted. Inside they have different little sitting areas, which were obviously rooms. They've got sofas and tables and chairs which makes for a good setting while surfing the internet on the free wifi, or chatting up friends. Service is solid, coffee is tasty, and they have plenty of Danish type offerings. They also make a killer breakfast burrito, but they only make a set amount each day. read more

I really regret not setting the bathroom of this place on fire. These idiots have no clue what they are doing and their attitude is more fitting for selling used cars than coffee. I stop in with a friend, she orders a small coffee and I order a four shot latte. We get drinks, take our seats and she points out that my drink was poured out of a container under the counter. I wasn't paying attention as we were talking as we waited on the drinks. So I take a drink of the four shot latte that I paid for only to taste a poor tasting iced coffee. I take the drink up to the counter and tell the man I ordered a four shot latte. He says that's what I have. The drink clearly has no espresso in it. I own an espresso maker and drink it every day, so when I drink iced coffee it's more than obvious. Yet the man insists I have a four shot latte. I mention that my friend told me she saw him pour the drink out of a container. The man pulls out a plastic container that's about quart-sized and says, "look, see, iced coffee." I clarify again, I ordered an iced latte, not an iced coffee. The man says, "yes, iced latte" while holding up the same container again. I mention that he just called it an iced coffee, then an iced latte and ask if he knows the difference. He then pulls out another container of ready made chilled would-be espresso. One of us is an idiot here. So you mean to tell me that you made nearly a gallon of espresso shots one by one pouring them into plastic containers to then pour them over ice for the hundreds of iced lattes you will no doubt be selling? That is absurd and it would take so long to do that that it wouldn't be a time saver later. Either way, espresso is meant to be made FRESH and served right away. That's all irrelevant because what I got was just twice brewed coffee, probably days old sitting in containers. Espresso is not subjective. If I order a steak and you give me fish, own up to the fact that it's not right and fix it. These two idiots behind the counter kept yelling that I did have iced coffee, no espresso, iced coffee, no espresso. So I paid $5 for a small iced coffee and get to see dimwits too dumb to know the product they sell. Avoid this place, it's a rip off and the staff is rude, clueless and less than honest or helpful. read more

In our travels down the CA coast, we've sampled a lot of coffee houses with a lot of breakfast snacks. This one is the best of all! The coffee drinks are great and they followed my fussy requests; so good that we went back the next morning and tried their breakfast burritos - and more coffee - and it was excellent. The salsa is super fresh and tasty. And we do want to acknowledge the friendly fellas who waited on us and made us feel so welcome! read more

One of the things I like to do once in awhile is park nearby and then visit the beach. After the sun sets, I haul my laptop over to Java Man, and have a drink, dessert, or sandwich. The drinks are fairly priced as are the desserts. Everything I have tried so far tastes good. The sandwiches are really good, but tug a bit on the wallet. The seating is comfortable. There are two sets of couches. I haven't had the pleasure of using the infamous bathrooms, yet. Free Wi-Fi is a big plus. All commonly used ports are open. Although Java Man itself is inexpensive and relaxing, feeding the parking meter becomes costly. $1 in quarters for every hour. And, that's if you can even find a parking spot to begin with. read more

It's a pretty cool little coffeehouse. I saw my sister and then future brother-in-law perform in their band here a few times. (They're married now, but the first time I saw them play, I don't know whether they were dating yet.) There are some nice nooks and crannies, and everything about the place is funky in a non-smelly, coffeehouse-approved way. I've never read a book here, but I would love to do so. I also want to know this place's history; but when I'm in the area, I tend to be hanging out with my sister, brother-in-law, niece, and nephew and not doing Yelp research. read more

It's true what they say about service "making or breaking" a business. I love Java Man not only because it's a local business I want to support, but because the guys that work here are so great. They're always happy and friendly even if it's super early in the morning or when they're right about to close up shop and someone stops in for that "right before close last minute coffee". Honestly, Java Man's coffee isn't my favorite but the guys that work here are great and their homemade pastries and desserts are pretty good. Continuing my Hermosa Beach experience. Java Man is a very relaxed coffee house. The owner and all the staff are very welcoming, jovial, and friendly. I ordered a small latte. It was made very quickly and the foam is thick and creamy! The seating and tables are plentiful, they also have some outdoor seating. They play music not to loud, a real plus for those who aren't crazy about LOUD music! Overall a good place to meet and have a good cup of coffee with your conversation! read more

This place is very cute and homey...the hubby and I went there for a cup of coffee and a muffin one sunny morning and were happy with the breakfast choices. I got a delicious oat bran muffin and he went for the more exotic chocolate chocolate chip muffin. I have been sitting in this coffee shop plugging away with computer work for the past 3 hours. In that time frame I have been fortunate enough to jam out to the likes of Boys 2 Men, Mariah Carey, Usher "You Make Me Wanna", Monica "For You I Will", Three Degrees "When Will I See You Again" and other such classics of the early 90s. Javaman in Hermosa is the local/independent/family owned coffee for the local artists, including script writers, book authors, fine artists, poets etc. It's not the Sbucks (Mc Donalds) or Coffee Bean (Burgerking) of coffee, but the "feel" is outstanding! Couple of friendly writers work there. Look for Doc, who's written the new Devilboy and M&M who's a soon to be famous screen writer. Talk, share, get inspired. For my first visit, this place is good. Granted I've only had their chorizo breakfast burrito (which was really good by the way), I do want to go back to try their other stuff - ie. sandwiches, pastries, desserts and the like. I did like their iced chai tea latte. I'd go back here again for that drink! :) It was a pain to find parking. The parking spots near by were metered parking, and it was a bit of a way to find a spot without a meter. Even then, we had a limited amount of time because we didn't have a permit. Their coffee is amazing!! I didn't really know what to expect going in, but knew I was in need of some caffeine. I ordered the house special for that day which was a Coconut Cream Coffee. I thought I was going to get some cream, but then realized later that the coffee was just black...BUT to my oh so pleasant surprise, the coffee was delicious and perfectly well balanced! Alright....so I only bought a drink from this place because I needed to use their bathroom, but I'm glad I did because I got to try Mexican hot chocolate, which was dope! It totally hit the spot and the chocolate was delicious. It was more rich than regular hot chocolate. I will order this from now on. I just got here from Hawaii, and while locals are walking around in slippers and shorts, I'm rocking socks, boots and a jacket, so a hot chocolate was right up my alley. The shop was closing soon, so there wasn't much of a crowd in there, but they have lots of comfy seating. I could totally see myself coming in for hot chocolate and to shoot out some emails. Maybe I should come back here after this review & do an update... but for now, this review is based on my 1st experience @ this place. First off, I honestly do NOT like parking @ Hermosa Beach. What is up w/ the meters all along the streets??? I think I'd come here more often if parking wasn't so sucky (yes, that is a word in my vocab... lol). Do get their breakfast burritos. I got the chorizo breakfast burrito & it was good. Was it to die for? Probably not. However, I do like their chai tea iced latte. As for the rest of the food on the menu, I didn't try those cuz I thought the price for what they called a "sandwich" in a place like that is OVERPRICED!!! A friend of mine did get one of those chicken sandwiches w/ pesto & she seemed to like it. So maybe their sandwiches do taste good but I'd think twice cuz of the prices. Nevertheless, I'd stick to their breakfast burritos cuz they tasted good w/ a reasonable price. Maybe the best thing about this place is their FREE WIFI, but the place is a lot smaller than one would imagine. I have to disagree w/ those who said this place is @ a great location. Even though it is @ the corner of the street, it is still easily to be missed. The outdoor seating is somewhat of a joke to me... They put few tables & chairs together on the small sidewalk & called it's "outdoor seating"... So in way, it seemed like you were in the way of the passerby... AND there was NO WATER/OCEAN-FRONT VIEW seating like someone has described. You see nothing but shops & other eateries. FALSE ADVERTISEMENT, PEOPLE!!! Anyway, I'd probably come back to try out their baked goods & try the rest of the other breakfast burritos. Other than that, I would tell my fellow yelpers not to believe all the hypes but to just come here & check it out for yourself. Got the iced coffee and a pear/cinnamon coffee cake. Both delicious and the slice of coffee cake was humongous. Price is average with a while lot of choices and the menu looked overwhelming. Also serves food -seems pretty popular. Customer service was good but not above and beyond. Great place to study and do some computer work but many hover over the powerstrip to keep their laptops and electronics charged. Park a block or two away in the residential area for 1-2 hours free :) read more

The guys that work here are super rad, always super friendly and welcoming. There are plenty of tables inside and outside, and it's a great place to bring your furry friends. I'm a web developer for a living so I'm constantly on my laptop. When I need to get out of the apartment, Java Man is my go-to spot. I love the flavor of the day coffees, something new to try each day. Its $2.13 including tax for a cup of coffee then 25¢ refills. I can sit in there all day. The pastries are amazing too. Java man is located on the corner of Pier Ave and Manhattan Ave and it feels and looks like it's just someone's house. The employees are friendly and the minute you walk in you are FACE TO FACE with what I consider to be the BEST DESSERT IN THE SOUTH BAY! I always have a hard time deciding what I want so I make other people decide for me. You can spend hours here futzing around on your laptop, reading a book, staring at a wall, playing backgammon, people watching.. whatever, no one bugs you. I was back in Hermosa and had to kill a few hours, so instead of hitting the bars, I hit the coffee shop. Ya, definitely a sign of getting old. It's a relatively big spot, although you'd never know it from the outside. Pros: big tables to spread out, good coffee, free wi-fi, and it's not a chain. Cons: The staff is LOUD, which makes trying to get work done or read nearly impossible without having ear plugs. The food isn't that hot either and is a bit overpriced. "I'm sorry... is this Hermosa Beach?" If it weren't for all the sun outside I would have sworn I was in San Francisco. This place is like an extension of your livingroom. It's like someone set up a little coffee stand in someone's house. I spent like 3 hours here plugged into my laptop nestled away on a sofa with all my crap spread out on a coffee table. And my breakfast burrito... small and neat (odd for a burrito) but satisfactory in a, "Hello mate, ever had a burrito before? Give it a shot, it's what the brown people eat" kind of way. My first time to the Java Man. A nice quaint place near the beach. It's old, rustic and for sure not a Starbucks, which I love. lol It has older, well used furniture, ample space to sit and relax or work. Just don't expect it to be too quiet for work. The workers tend get excited when new customers walk in. They like to greet them and let every one know they're here. (Not really a bad thing, just something to be aware of if you're looking for some quiet read/work time) I had the Chai Latte, which was nice. Could use a little more spice to my liking, but that's my opinion. I hear they have fantastic breakfast burritos. I'll be back for one of those mammoths!! P.S. After dinner last night, me and my friend stopped by Java Man to get some hot cocoa and just chat. The guy behind the counter recommended the cupcakes so we had a chocolate cupcake with a little candy chick on top. It was really good - moist and light. The atmosphere was really chill and laid back. They have a water dispenser so you can help yourself to water. The bathroom is tiny. And I mean tiny. I was scared I was going to kiss the door as I squatted to pee. That would be my only complaint. read more
