I'd give Jay Bee's a 3.5... went for a late lunch today and had a very short wait for some tasty BBQ. Ordered the 2-meat combination with pork ribs and chopped beef, both medium sauce. It was some yummy BBQ and worth the reputation (Neely name and DDD episode). Don't know what the complaints about service and ghetto comments are all about... Service was fine and the place is located on an island in an industrial neighborhood just north of the Home Depot Center off Alondra and Avalon. I would be a fool to say that this is the best 'cue in So Cal... I'll reserve that comment for my favorite - Bludsoe's. I have been patronizing this BBQ establishment for over 20-years. Today 3/21/21 I stopped by and purchased several chopped beef sandwiches (over $60.00). They were all full of fat and the meat taste old with no flavor, chewy and tough. The food was so terrible; I wouldn't feed it to my dog. Very disappointed! What made matters worse the cashier was rude unprofessional and lacked customer service and I realized it would not be worth my time disputing. read more

This place is the real deal! Having worked for a local utility here in L A for 30-plus yrs, I got to sample Q from all around the city. This is a take-away. Couple of picnic tables outside. Diners Drive Ins and Dives. This sure is a dive! A small bbq place in Gompton (Gardena/Compton) Mostly pork on the menu. The sliced beef, which is what I got was sliced a little too thick for my taste and was not tender at all. The potato salad's potatoes werent fully cooked and kinda hard. The bbq sauce was ok and the baked beans were actually delicious which is why they get a 2nd star. Other than that I dont have to go back. I'll stick to Phillips BBQ and Lucille's. read more

I miss me my Jay Bee's!!! I used to work down the street at Nissan and I would hit this place as often as I could. The bbq is so delicious there! My favorite is the pulled pork sandwich. The pork is super tender, the cole slaw is just enough to add that perfect crunch in the sandwich. And the sauce .... so super yummy! And they don't skimp on the sauce, you just can't when it comes to BBQ. I just saw it on Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and it reminded me of how much I loved Jay Bee's. Looks like we actually have true Tennessee BBQ in LA. The lady that owns Jay Bees is the sister of Jim Neely, owner of Interstate BBQ in Memphis, with the exact same recipes and 4.5 star rating as well. Ty D. invited myself and another friend, who KNOWS her bbq, to Jay Bee's for lunch during the week. I ordered the rib tips and I don't recall what anyone else ordered. The reason I don't remember is that I wasn't talking to or noticing anyone once my food arrived. I dove in, head first, and was sucking on the meat! The sauce was really good, a bit on the spicy side which was perfect! The macaroni salad was just alright, nothing special. But the rib tips were super tender and very meaty. The sauce was perfect. I'm glad we got there a bit early to avoid the rush. There was a long line by the time we started eating our food. The atmosphere is fun! You order your food and then eat outside on picnic tables. Don't even bother taking off the bbq sauce that is stuck on them. Just grab some paper towels from the dispenser outside, put them over the table, put your food on the paper towels and proceed to eat like there is no tomorrow. I admit, I don't know much about bbq. I only know what I like and don't like. I really REALLY liked Jay Bee's. I love the rib tips. In fact, I love them so much I'm going to marry them! P.S. This is one of the 4 best barbeque places in the L.A. area (in my opinion, of course!); the other 3 are: Philip's in South L.A., Dr. Hogly Wogly's in the Valley, and Smoke House Barbeque in Chinatown (no, it's not Chinese barbeque; it's good, old-fashioned southern barbeque). But definitely try Jay-Bee's. One little hint, though: When you phone your order in, or if you come into this little place, KNOW WHAT YOU WANT WHEN SHE ASKS "May I help you?". Do not---I emphatically repeat: Do NOT---start deciding or discussing what you want when she's ready to take your order. Trust me: If you do, you'll get your feelings hurt! I found out about this place on the Food Network. It was touted by Guy Fieri as being a very good bar-b-que joint. I beg to differ. I ordered the large order of ribs (5 for those who are counting) medium, a side of baked beans and tater salad. 2 pieces of white bread accompanied my meal and was appropriate when sopping up the sauce. The ribs were just OK and not piping hot. It was as if they seemed to be sitting around for a small amount of time before being served. I have had better ribs cooked by my relatives in the FLA. I was expecting much more and I didn't get it. The sides were about the same in quality. The medium sauce was to die for. Was driving thru Gardena and saw this place which I remembered from Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. So naturally, I have to stop and try this place out. First of all, the area is not what you consider the best. Slightly scary if you don't grow up in the area, but nothing to worry about. Go thru the white gated doors into a small ordering/waiting area with protected glass for the people that work there. Since this is not a bank, it does make you wonder a bit..... Anyhow (just try to block that out of your mind), I orders the pull pork sandwich with a side of mac n' cheese. The sandwich was not disappointing, as good as any reputable BBQ I ever had. The Mac n chesse was very OK. I think it's a little better than the ones you get at the frozen food aisle of your supermarket. This is the best bbq I have come across in LA. It's not ridiculously expensive like other places, either. I hate to beat a dead horse here but bbq prices in LA ruin it for me. BBQ IS SUPPOSED TO BE CHEAP. Last Thursday I had the small pork rib dinner plate and it was plenty of food, even for me. It came with about 4 meaty spare ribs, 2 sides (I got baked beans & potato salad) and 2 slices of white bread. The ribs were smoky and the sauce was a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The beans were out of this world, with little chunks of meat and a nice smoky-sweet flavor. The potato salad was pretty standard but c'mon, who in their right mind is coming here for the potato salad? The place ain't fancy, come here for the meat, smile if the staff is curt and just take your food to go if you don't like the run down picnic tables or the neighborhood. Me? If it wasnt for "Diners Drive ins & Dives" I dont think I would have ever found this place. Now that I HAVE found it, I dont think I would return. THE SERVICE: Rushed and a little intimidating. While the lady took my order she was telling the lady behind us not to talk because she wasnt talking to her...(the lady tried answering any questions the lady on the register asked us...they got into it) weird. BEVERAGES: They only sell caned sodas and water bottles. When I asked if she can leave my water in her fridge she made sure everyone heard her say "NO, YOUR FOOD WILL BE OUT SOON." FOOD: My sister and I had the pork ribs with a side of baked beans and coleslaw. My pork ribs were unfortunately very dry, whereas my sisters were just right. Jay Bee's Bar B Q does not have the same quality of meat that was previously sold there. Ribs are cut rather strange, sausages are supermarket smoke type. Spent $45.00 for food txt we put in trash. Chef was very helpful trying to please and gave us another order with Chicken sausages instead of Beef after I complained about the difference in quality of sausage. The Chicken was worse than the beef. Everything went into the trash. They said this is what their vendor gave them and many people liked them. They were very gracious, but I would never return or recommend it if you want the original taste Jay Bee's was known for. read more

On the way home from USC, my son and I tried Jay Bee's. I had heard quite a bit about it from Yelp and the internet. We shared a rack of baby back ribs and a pulled pork sandwich. I like to think that we can discern good BBQ and we were disappointed. The pulled pork itself was good but we both thought the bread overpowered it. There was no cole slaw in it, just pulled pork. In our opinion it was plain, nothing special. The ribs were done well and came off the bone. But my big deal is I think BBQ sauce is important but the ribs shouldn't be swimming in them. Sauce is meant to enhance the taste, not drown the ribs. The sauce itself is good, a bit spicy and vinegary, not super sweet. I've had better though. In the end, it was an ok experience. In our quest for great BBQ our conclusion was that Jay Bee's was good but not great. read more

I had heard the hype for Jay Bee's for years (long before DD&D), and I finally found myself in the right neighborhood at the right time. Driving up, it looks great...my kind of place. What an abject disappointment. I had the highly recommended pulled pork sandwich. Just about everything was wrong with it. The pork was absolutely swimming in sauce. The sauce, described as "hot", didn't even qualify as "medium". And, the sauce just tasted strange. The pork was full of icky fatty bits. The meat that was there was overmatched by the sauce, so there is no way to evaluate the flavor of the meat. Awful, really. read more

One of the best restaurant BBQ joints that i've been to. Took my dear cousin here for his bday and we both enjoyed the gift of tasty foodie exploration. The flavors were memorable, I can still taste it now as i write this. The sauce was not overly sour, since i got the medium spiciness, the tangy kick built on itself with every bite without over powering the meaty flavor and sweet smoky flavor. Although they are renown for their pulled pork, i seemed to have enjoyed their bbq rib tips and Lrg. BBQ Beef sandwiches a lot better since they both hold up the smokiness a lot better. I also loved their baked beans that have been done right, since it was seasoned with the drippings and chunks of left over bbq tidbits. It was quite the drive for me, but worth the trip. I have yet to try what the rest of the neighborhood has to offer, but compared to I.E. bbq, it tops them all in flavor and moistness. I look forward to trying their greens and mac n' cheese, since they were out today. So far in South Cali, I would put this on the top. So on to my BBQ quest !!! read more

Best BBQ ever. I've seriously driven around trying different bbq joints, and this is by far the best. No, I'm not rating it on their coleslaw... their mash potatoes is decent. Their baked beans is their best side. You can't go wrong with their meat combos. They don't hold back on their BBQ sauce either. I tend to stick with mild since I like to enjoy the taste rather than burn my mouth, but they have a range... and their hot sauce is pretty hot. The company I work for, moved buildings further away, but my coworker and I still manage to make our way down on a slow work day. So worth it. I recommend their two meat combination plates. Definitely worth the price, and they seem to be better than the sandwiches. read more

This place is horrible. Pulled pork sandwich is disgusting, which is kinda sad cuz Ive never had a bad one before. The lady at the register who I believe to be the owner is not nice at all. She was 1/2 on the phone talking and laughing to her friend and 1/2 helping us (scowled at us like WE were BOTHERING HER!!). The food (pulled pork sandwich and ribs) came out cold, which is strange because we had to wait for it. Needless to say it was not that good either. The sides were average at best. Maybe I'm jaded because I have family with the BBQ Skillz, but this place didn't fully satisfy that deep down need for amazing BBQ. We had: Pork ribs dinner- medium sauce, Potato salad, and Cole slaw. The meat was tender but it was drowning in the sauce. Cole slaw was OK and potato salad was the Stater Bros brand... spare me please- plus I wanted Greens or Mac & Cheese but that isn't a side option for dinner plates. Chicken Links dinner - hot sauce, Baked Beans. Links were good, again drowning. Sauce was hot and oddly grainy. Baked beans were OK, I make better. Extras (like I paid extra for these things and they were whack :( ) Mac & Cheese- Um NO! Devoid of seasoning I put bbq sauce on it... Greens- I've been eating greens since I had teeth and I've never tasted greens like this- weird, sweet, and bitter taste - so strange, even my husband couldn't figure it out. Sweet Potato Pie- haven't tasted it yet, but it's from an outside bakery - so it doesn't count. Might give this place one more try for a pulled pork sammy- I'll let you know how it goes. read more

This was the best BBQ Ive ever had. I was in Houston, TX for work for a month and tried so many different BBQ places but none of them was as good as Jay Bee's. Came back from Houston and found Bludso's which was real good but then came here and tried their BBQ and was blown away. Their meat was so tender, the BBQ sauce was the perfect sweet and their BBQ beans!!! OMG theyre the best!!! First time coming here and I was disappointed. We wasted $30. I order a rib tip sandwich and two meat combo plate with brisket, rib tip,baked beans and macaroni salad. I get home and I didn't get bread for my sandwich. The bbq sauce was super greasy, the brisket was nothing but fat( couldn't eat it). The potato and macaroni salad didn't have flavor. The BBQ is on hit here and can't say enough about it. I myself love the BBQ sauce, but unfortunately there service, attitude and rudeness ruins it all. My favorite is the sliced brisket with white bread dipped in there hot sauce. The beans are killer and have shredded pieces of meat. I've been going to this place for about 13 years and haven't been back for about 6 months or so, and don't really think I'm going to return. The service isn't always terrible, but more times then not I would have say. There BBQ for the most part is always juicy and tender with lots of the BBQ pit flavor. The service and attitude SUCKS! The prices are cheap, correctly priced for the food that you get. Location isn't really in a desirable part of town. Parking area is small, but so is the building. Eating is outside and very limited to three benches...it's basically take out for the most part. read more
