I've been trying to get to Jersey Subs when in town, but one thing prevented it until now: They are not open on the weekends and only until open until 5PM on weekdays. Interior is nice and the place feels a little retro. It was a quiet morning when I visited and I received prompt service. Menu consists of breakfast items, subs/sandwiches, and soups. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich which was only $5. It was tasty and reasonably sized. Friend had me pick her up a Jersey Super, and her comment was simply "It was ok." When I get back here again, the breakfast platter and soup menu both caught my attention as something worth trying. read more

Forget the food for a second - when you get to the spot to order, and you see George Carlin leaving a signed photo on the wall thanking the crew for a sub, you have to think it's a winning spot. George doesn't strike me as having been a particularly complimentary type of guy; but at some point years ago he was chowing down in the same spot. The subs are huge and piled high with meat, cheese and toppings. I got the Jersey Best and my wife went with the Turkey sub - both winning combos, both meant to be eaten in multiple sittings. A half sub is more than enough for lunch. So don't let your friend talk you out of checking this spot out. My favorite deli in the downtown. Jersey Subs is right across from my office on Church Street and so I'm here just about every other week grabbing breakfast or lunch from their menu. They always make great subs and soups and now that they have breakfast, I can catch them earlier in the day for a hot bagel & egg sandwich as well. Prices are always good and if you're going to be working in the downtown area of New Brunswick, spots like this are crucial. Not to be confused with the Jersey Mike's chain, this family owned standalone sub shop is a real treat. Located near the heart of downtown New Brunswick, this is easily the best spot for subs in the area. Having been to a number of quality sub shops around Jersey: Tastee's, Big Wally's, Riddle & Martin, I can say this easily ranks in the top 5 on my list. The meats are piled high, the bread is soft and not stale, the veggies are fresh and crisp and they got all the toppings right. I just happened to begin working in town and my co-workers had this place on their rotation before I even started. It's very good and consistent. I have been here about 4-5 times since I started over the past few months. There is a very nice selection of subs that range from Italian to American to Veggie. They offer wraps, white and whole wheat bread, which is nice. The bread is fresh and the meat and cheese is sliced in front of you fresh. I have stuck with turkey clubs and turkey ham subs. The shop is located in downtown New Brunswick and at lunch time it gets busy. Prices are very reasonable and service is always good and friendly. I only come here for the tuna. Weird, I know when I can make tuna right from a can at home. I don't know but there's just something about it and I'm pretty sure in my many years of existence I have never tasted tuna as delicious as the one that they serve here at Jersey Subs. This place has been open since 1969 for a reason - Deli meats are as fresh as it gets, service is lightning fast, and the average half sub costs about 5-6 bucks. I really do mean lightning fast, go any weekday at lunch and you'll find a line that doubles all the way back around. Fear not, Jersey Subs has a super efficient assembly line to get you in and out. Think of the sub version of Seinfeld's Soup Nazi; be prepared to place your order when you're called. Subs are available in wheat and white and you get all extras you could want. My personal favorites are the "Jersey Super" or the Club w/ Bacon. If there has to be a downside it's that they close early (3-4pm). My salad was solid, ingredients very fresh, plenty of Boars Head turkey, would've appreciated a bit more avocado though. Wifey found her tuna salad sub fresh and acceptable, nothing outstanding, she has had better. Their interpretation of Black Bean and Sausage soup was bland, flavorless, with little to no sausage present, Campbell's has a better version. I like subs a lot. I did not like these subs. They use red onions, so prepare for some heartburn. I got half a tuna and half a Jersey Best. I got here on a Monday at about 10:30. Tuna is pretty subjective, but to me this tasted like cafeteria food. Honestly, I think this was made way before I got there and picked up some fridge flavor. Really not good. They open at 9:30, so if this was made fresh daily it would not have tasted like that. The Jersey best is supposed to be Cappicola, Prociuttini, Salami & Provolone. It all tasted like boiled ham. Just really muted flavors, and no color differentiation in the cross section at all. Bread is soft. I believe the place is family owned and operated, and the employees are some of the friendliest people around (you'll meet all of them, since they run it like an assembly line). This restaurant is definitely one of "those places I know", where you get to know the staff, and regular customers. There are many daily specials, a variety of fresh, delicious breads, plenty of Boar's Head meats (as well as tuna, hummus, and fish patties) and cheeses. You can also buy freshly made potato salads, cole slaw, and soups. The servings are quite big, and given that the prices are competitive with Subway, that means a good value for money too! Jersey Subs is only open till around 4PM, since most of their customers working in New Brunswick will be heading home at that point. Everything is made fresh to order and it's a treat to watch the process - pick your bread, pick your meat & cheese, watch them get sliced and piled HIGH on your sandwich. Been coming to Jersey Subs for years now. I don't get to go much because its only open during the week and closes at 4:30pm. So the only way to go is if you're home for a day or working in New Brunswick. This is the only negative about this place. The sandwiches are all delicious and can be put up against best subs in the northeast. I always get the Italian hoagie with everything on it. It seems to get better each time if that's even possible. The greatest part about this place is that no matter how long the line is, you'll be in and out within 5 minutes. They have one of the most efficient processes you'll ever see and the guy who actually cuts the meat and slices the bread is a true pro. You only have to tell him once what you want and he nails it. The rest of the people throw on the toppings, wrap it and its at the register only seconds after you order it. The meat is all fresh and sliced right in front of you. Just awesome. There is no where else in New Brunswick to go for a sandwich. If you do go anywhere else you're wasting your time. One time, I took the train from NYC down to NB just to eat Jersey Subs in-person and have one for take out. The lady who was serving me and packing my take-out was nice; she have the vinegar and oil separate on the side so it wouldn't get soggy when I return to the city. I work within walking distance to Jersey Subs, and on warm Spring and Summer days its a nice walk down to grab a quick sub. I've only seen them at lunch, where there is usually an insane rush and a line that wraps all the way to the back of the restaurant. It moves very quickly, soups are OK....subs are made to order and the quality is good. Definitely worth the visit if you are in the area, the Subway a few blocks down from this place doesn't see anywhere near the volume during the lunch push...guess that speaks volumes. read more

Been here a bunch of times for a quick lunch. The subs are made how they should be. Large, meat sliced to order, not too much lettuce and a bunch of fixings available to choose from. Pretty much the opposite of what Subway offers. The only thing I can say that they should change about their subs is the bread. Always seems a tad bit stale. Could be me though. The line during lunch hour can be a little nauseating, but it's something to expect. They have eat in or take out. This place is awesome! I went there the second day it opened and they were so friendly and excited to get the place going. I have been there several times and I have never been disappointed. I never go to Subway anymore, since their subs are soggy and gross. This place puts effort into making the subs just the way you want it. If you don't want any of their pre-made subs or want changes on a sub, they will do it. Also, they will let you know of any deals they have (usually a drink comes with your meal, or it was for a small amount more - maybe $1). Great Lunch Spot! They have limited seating downstairs, but they also have quite a bit of space upstairs to relax and eat. Both upstairs and downstairs have TVs. Although, downstairs is rather uncomfortable to sit at if there is a crowd of people around. Excellent staff, excellent food! read more
