I have been coming here since they opened. I love their breads but the whole cakes are a very good deal compared to other Asian bakeries and so good! I know everyone rants and raves about Kings Hawaiian's cakes for birthdays and I agree they make very good cakes, but here's my issue and why I like JJ's cakes so much more and this is just my preference in cakes. I wanted to get a quarter sheet rectangular cake, with fresh fruit. I asked King's Hawaiian if they could make something like a strawberry shortcake with fresh fruit and they said no... it was for a birthday girl who didn't like canned peaches, they have a Peach Bavarian cake that's basically like a strawberry shortcake but with canned peaches. No cakes with fresh fruit?! Darn! So I went to JJ's and ordered exactly what I wanted just a simple strawberry shortcake and it was much cheaper, I got a quarter sheet cake. It was for my daughter's 11th birthday, but I used to order cakes from JJ's for company Team birthday parties, for teams under 15, and for department parties, larger groups we ordered from King's Hawaiian most of the time, we even had a company account with them. Not everyone knew about JJ's cakes and everyone loved them! They of course have cake by the slice and different singular cakes for 1 person/sitting - the Mochi cakes are unique and very good, with fruit like mango, strawberry... I love getting an assortment for when we have a small gathering and we just share 5-6 different kinds of cake! Sharing is caring! Now for the breads/pastries... I know the'll be compared to that larger franchise chain bakery 85 C but this is your mom n pop local little bakery, not a big place and not as many choices, but what they have to me is sufficient and very good. The standard custard egg tart is my favorite. My kids like the steamed pork bao. They sell out if you go too late. They have some interesting homemade Taiwanese sides (?) in the case with the cakes... Looks very homemade, like mom's cooking type thing, but I'm not Taiwanese so I'm sorry I can't explain what they are... but I think if you were Taiwanese and homesick maybe that would make you happy. They have some drinks, I can't lie the boba is mediocre I would just go to a real boba place... don't get it there. I appreciate everything there... I assume you must be super hard working to make all these pasties and breads mainly by hand... I'm sure they have some machines too but overall It looks very labor intensive. I hope more people understand and appreciate this is not at all a huge company like King's Hawaiian that mass produces their food and just has everything come in a huge truck. JJ's prices therefore are reasonable to me, and I would like to support them more. This review is looong overdue, but they have been consistent with the food quality and freshness and the people there are really nice. If you call them they will save you some bao so if going late like after work know that you can reserve them! They are very yummy next day even if you put a wet paper towel on it and microwave a little so you re-steam it. Do not over do or the white bao /bread can harden. I picked up a variety of pastries including a pineapple bun, custard bun, curry beef pie, chicken pie, Parmesan cheese bread, scallion bun, cream cheese danish, sponge cake, Portuguese egg tart, and Taiwanese egg tart. The bakery and products remind me of 85 Degrees Bakery. Prices are reasonable and the variety of offerings are good. read more

I tend to come here pretty late so I oftentimes don't get what I'm looking for, but the pastries here are solid. I much prefer it over 85. They have a larger selection of things. My favorite is usually the hot dog scallion bun. They also have some Taiwanese foods as well which I've yet to try. Overall, great Asian bakery. read more

My first experience was when a coworker brought the mochi cakes to the office and then she continued to tell me that the bakery was in our 'hood! Since then I've been able to try their pastries and cakes. My fave right now is Tiramisu (so much so that I bought it for two different holiday parties. It's hard to tell when a "good time" to come is... if you arrive too early, not all the items are done baking yet; but if you come too late, they might be out of the delicious goodness! Best bet is probably to call ahead and definitely pre-order any cakes. read more

I spend a lot of time trying different Asian bakeries, and this one is great. Croissant (with ham and cheese) was flakey, crispy on top and soft inside, filled with lots and lots of butter. I preferred this type over Paris Baguette's, which I find a little too crispy and overly glazed. Portuguese egg tart was delicate, clearly fresh, and had lovely light egg aftertaste. One thing I noticed is the average age of customers was probably like 50+, almost 100% female. If the older Asian mommies are predominantly shopping here, you can trust it's going to be very very good. Prices very fair. Worth visiting! So you might've heard by now that JJ bakery takes the number one position, #1 . congratulations from Best of the bay. JJ bakery has long been an icon in the 626 area code and overseas. JJ Bakery on Crenshaw in Torrance has been there for at least 15, 20 years. JJ bakery has a loyal customer base and how do you know by noon time they are sold out on the freshly made Chinese Taiwanese loaf bread and many other daily side dishes or so I say bread type snacks. I would often hear the words 85° bakery from coast to coast and overseas I would also hear about other Chinese bakeries and Taiwanese bakeries specifically and not to ever put down any establishment that makes an effort to rise, kudos to everyone. However JJ Bakery is consistently making the best and most authentic typed traditional flower snacks, bread, & pastries that I've known about since traveling some 20+ years ago to Taiwan, Tai- Chung, etc simultaneously to Fujian, Shenzhen Guangzhou and the major cosmopolitans such as ;Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Cheng Du. these are just reference points for the sake of the authenticity I taste and the ingredients that I see and taste as well at JJ bakery. If you take a look at my photos you will see various bread snacks and some pastries that I chose however I passed on some of the mung bean and some of the bean cakes and so many other types of red mixtures. Tonight I just wanted to go for the good stuff that I know I can each way as I sketch down some new designs and and enjoy my little snacks how cool is that. One different you will find between let's say 85° bakery and JJ bakery is that 85° bakery is the Starbucks now of the Chinese Taiwanese type bakery / social hangouts. How are you will find another difference that Jay Zhou Bakery does not operate in the fashion like a tea and or a coffee house along with pastries and bread order , number call outs. JJ bakery is definitely more focused on the bread and pastry aspects, I think this goes to say that JJ was probably the first or at least kept it focused on the authentic and original recipes in the bread and bread like pastry items for sale. Been going to JJ BAKERY forever. It was an almost weekly treat/tradition for my kids since they were young. 12 yrs later, it is still a treat to walk in and see the beautiful owner and her lovely smile from time to time. She was always kind to me and my babies. Haven't been in a while and last week when I walked in, she was there with her welcoming smile. Service is a 10! Their pastries is a 10! The place is consistently good. Seriously folks, if you haven't been to this gem on Crenshaw & Sepulveda, you are missing out! Can't wait till next week! I recommend getting their mocha roll. For those of you who enjoy 85ºC, JJ Bakery is like the more old school, traditional original that's been around for years. I still come here for the pork song in puff pastry which is my family's favorite. We even call ahead for them to set some aside in case they sell out. The breads here are good, and decently priced. They've seemed to have added more and more (non-bakery) food offerings which I haven't tried since they seem to only advertise in the window ads. Their breads and cakes are less "trendy" than what you find at 85ºC, but there's a reason why they've been around so long. read more

Good selection of baked goods and frozen, pre-cooked dishes. The baked goods are great, but the frozen dishes are hit and miss. The dishes remind me of my mom's cooking, and I've tried several different ones. Most of them taste great and are good quality, but some soups are watered down and lack flavor. I am so disappointed with the strawberry mochi this time. I loved their strawberry mochis prior to the pandemic shutdown. This time, I don't know who is making them now but the mochi is now in slices that are kinda slapped onto the mound of whipped cream and cake and the strawberry. I bought 6 just a few days ago. No effort was made to smooth out the mochi and smooth it around the mound like they use to. The mochi itself is a bit tough and harder than pre-pandemic. Sad to see that prices have gone up and quality has gone down. Purchased a savory bread in the afternoon and had it the next morning for breakfast - even though it was sealed in the plastic packaging up until eating, the bread was still stale. Pretty disappointed since I grew up eating JJ Bakery, before 85 degrees was ever around. Taste of bread was still how I remembered though. Parking in lot can be tricky during busy times, but otherwise plenty of spots available. What I like about JJ over 85 is that the breads are packaged already - no unsanitary handling by customers before purchasing, and also no questionable trays/tonga. read more

My only complaint is that there is not a more sizable selection. That's going to sound crazy because as far as the diversity or range, what is offered is quite nice. You can get fruit tarts, moon cakes, cake rolls, creme brulee, cheese cake sticks, mochi, pudding, coffee cake, cupcakes, mousse, green onion bread, green tea treats, beef curry pastry, cranberry loafs and cakes -- so much, much, much more. Don't like sugary sweet things? JJ has a wonderful selection of treats subdued in their sweetness, along with savory treats. My favorites are the beef curry pastry and the baked cheese toast. Mango Angel Cake! Yay! I bought mango angel cake for my mom for Mother's Day and it was wonderful. My mom and I were very impressed with the cake. There is a nice layer of mangos and three giant strawberries right on top. The fruits aren't just on the top though, there is a nice layer of fruits right in the middle too of both strawberry and mango too! It not only looks yummy, it is yummy! Ahh it is great! The cake was very delicious. I loved all the fruits and the soft mango cake. My mom and I also had recently bought a strawberry vanilla cake for a birthday and that was also yummy but this mango angel cake is my favorite. My friends are superly Asian and really wanted to go to an Asian bakery. So here we are. The prices are great - I got the below for 5.75 because they wouldn't take card below $5. I tried: Red bean mochi bread Taro bread Pineapple pudding bread. Green tea flavored roll About the green tea roll: Why do I try so hard to be healthy? It tastes super strongly of green tea but I probably should have suspected it would. Not a fan at all. The pineapple pudding bread was straight up mediocre pudding in a bread case and I thought I'd never complain about pudding. I did not eat the red bean mochi bread happily because I spent half my time wondering how many hours at the gym I needed to work off the mochi I couldn't even taste and the other half of my time deciding if I liked the pastry. I didn't. Now the Taro bread is a must get! My single good purchase on this trip! If I'm back in the plaza I'll be getting a taro bread with cash! read more

I keep hearing about JJ Bakery and I love Asian bakeries, especially Chinese bakeries. Since the car crashed through the bakery, I did notice a large planter right in front. Maybe to somewhat thwart another incident? My son pointed out what he wanted: Loaf of white bread, chocolate espresso cake and hotdog in a fancy bun. I got the coffee roll and another savory bun for DH. Over the next few days, we sampled it all. All was fresh and delicious, most notably the chocolate espresso cake. I dont know the official name but it's $3.50 a slice and so worth it! The many moist layers and whipped cream in between made this a winner. The coffee roll was also very good. What's nice about these rolls is that they are not too sweet and the texture is soft, not dry at all which is sometimes the case when you buy them frozen. Finally, my only question was that the pastries were all lined up against the window which I thought could get warm. Wouldnt that affect the pastries? JJ Bakery and 85°C Bakery Cafe - these two are probably the most well-known Asian bakery franchises in Southern California. Personally, I still prefer 85°C 75% of the time and JJ Bakery for the other 25%. Differences between JJ and 85°C: Generally, I think the look and taste of 85°C's breads are definitely more appealing to general public (e.g. mochi egg tart, brioche, marble taro bread, etc). As for JJ's breads, they don't look as nice and not everyone can accept "green onion bun", "BBQ pork bread", suncake, walnut/almond cookies, and wife cake (you probably won't find them in 85°C). Drinks: 85°C's boba drinks are far more superior than JJ Bakery's. However, there are two drinks that I would get at JJ Bakery - soy milk and Taiwanese rice milk (two items that 85°C doesn't offer). Both are pretty good drinks. Conclusion - expect high quality & delicious walnut/almond cookies, unique breads & Taiwanese pastries selections (pineapple cake, Taiwanese nougat, etc), and friendly staff. If you would like to try slightly different Taiwanese pastries, then I think JJ Bakery is worth a visit. read more

No pressure at all, unlike some bakery behind the fancy display with hangry people in line breathing on you neck to hurry up with your order. I liked most of my pastries and great quality over all. I was very excited to try JJ Bakery because I've heard great things about this place. Lots of goodies to choose from. I bought cream puffs, green tea cookies, green tea mousse slice and a Sahara mousse slice. I was pretty disappointed with what I got. Everything was great aside from the two slices. They both were very dry. The sahara mousse has a small macaron on top but hardly any filling inside.. Wtf? Another spot that I had been meaning to check out for some time. I went early in the morning and was pleased with the wide assortment of baked goods. I didn't recall JJ Bakeries being this diverse in breads. After spending entirely too much time looking at their baked goods. I decided to get a small pudding desert with soy milk. The dessert was deliciousness! The taste was not over powering, especially with its sugar. It was a nice and light dessert just to satisfy ones sweet tooth. I also ordered soy milk and that was pretty fresh as well. It has been some time since I've had this type of soy milk. I have been coming to JJ Bakery in Torrance for years and everything I have bought from them have been good and satisfying. While I was there yesterday I saw that they have the prosperity cakes which usually are sold during Chinese New Year. I immediately bought a couple thinking they should be good as they are made by JJ Bakery. It was a disappointment. Very dry and tasted like they were days old. I know I will not be eating them and instead of throwing them away I brought them back to exchange for something else. I was told by the employee that they are supposed to be dry and that I should steam them. I have had other prosperity cakes from other bakeries and the ones by JJ Bakery are by far the worst prosperity cakes, not by taste, but because of the dryness. I ended up just leaving the prosperity cakes as they do not want to exchange them for something else. Why do I need to steam them? I did not refrigerate or freeze them? I bought them to eat right away, while "fresh". read more

Some of my favs are: the Hokkaido Chiffon (the fluffy chiffon is stuffed with a light & delicious cream), Marble Cloud Taro (especially if you love taro), Raisin Danish (reminiscent of the same breakfast treat from my childhood bakery, closed because the baker retired), Angel Lemon Chiffon (a fluffy cloud of yumminess with a hint of lemon), Vanilla Filo & Orange Chiffon Cake Rolls (I still love them but I wish JJ's makes the chiffon cake rolls larger & stuffed with the classic vanilla cream filling; I'll have to make a run to Chinatown's Queen's Bakery for this classic). H loves their Watermelon Shape Cake (fun & cute cake, my l'il one's fav). Other notable goodies to try are: Green Onion Bread, Mochi Fruit Cakes (try green tea, strawberry, & mango), Mango Mousse, Chessboard Cake, Pineapple Bun (don't be fooled by the name, you won't find any pineapples in the bun but the top crust has a very mild pineapple flavor), Hot Dog Bun (kids love this thing). Pricing is comparable to most Asian bakeries as well as their customer service: you may or may not be greeted, service may or may not come with a smile, etc. If you're here in the afternoon or on a hot day, remember to check the items on the shelves by the window in case the sun gives them a little added roasting session. As much as I love their bread, over the years they're getting more and more stingy on using their ingredients. My favorite pork song with green onions has barely any green onions and the pork itself. Also the pineapple bread with buttermilk has less filling and the top of the bread has less of the yummy layer to it. It's so disappointing, I just walked out of the store without purchasing any (I usually buy a lot). I mean, I understand that the prices of the ingredients go up. On our way back home, my parents stopped by JJ Bakery to get some baked goods as well as a tiramisu cake. Baked goods: We got the Hokkaido toast, some mystery loaf of bread that looks like it could be angel food or chiffon (center), and a French Walnut toast (round, right). I remember having Hokkaido toast from JJ Bakery when I was younger (which I (and my family) devoured within a couple of days) so I was actually really excited to see it again. The other two I never had (hence why I don't know the specific names), but I am look forward to trying them out - especially the French walnut toast, as I have been in a bit of a French toast phase. Now for the tiramisu (which is the main focus of this review): As we were taking the tiramisu out of the bag to put in the fridge, somehow the box was stuck altogether because next thing I knew, my mom (who was taking the cake out of the bag) made a noise and lo and behold, the tiramisu was broken. We checked the box and found that it was poorly constructed, as one of the flaps have come off (see second picture). Fortunately the cake didn't fall to the ground, but the damage has already been done. My mom was devastated because she bought it for someone's birthday and it was frustrating for me to see this all happen - all because of a poorly constructed box. When I also tried to open the box later (to take these pictures), I found the box quite tight and difficult to take out - almost to the point that I was worried that I might actually drop it and incur more damage (which thankfully did not happen). Taste-wise, the tiramisu was delicious; however, I suggest that in the future that the boxes be more sturdily constructed. I have to admit that I was disappointed that the box that held our tiramisu essentially failed us. Please make sure to properly construct and double check the boxes you put your cakes in as well as inform customers to be careful when handling their cake (or tiramisu or any delicately structured desserts that are packaged in boxes like these). I'm sure it was not ill intent and understand that we all make mistakes, but I just want to make sure that nobody has to go through a similar incident in the future! read more

This bakery has been around for a while, for all the time being, it never disappoints me. I come here once in a while for the RICE DRINK, it's like an Asian rice smoothie, super rich rice flavor. Wide selection of bread, dessert, and cakes. The staff was super nice when I asked for the rice drink, which they already sold out for that day.
